Once again the Giants offense made things interesting against the San Diego Padres, and once again they came up short.
A late outburst of power from the unlikely sources of Drew Cavanaugh (his first career HR) and Drew Gilbert forced the Padres bullpen to rally their arms with Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller stopping the buck to serve the Giants their second loss in the series, and seventh of their last nine games against San Diego.

The afternoon didn't start with the Giants playing catch-up. Two batters into the bottom half of the 1st, Rafael Devers put San Francisco up by two with his 37th home run of the season.
The 2-run jog earned Devers his 61st and 62nd runs batted-in at the intimidating cavern that was/is Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T/Oracle Park, the second highest RBI total after Barry Bonds' 71 in 2001. Devers' 19 home runs at Oracle are the most by a player not named Barry Bonds and is tied with the '02 Bonds model for fifth most HR in a season at 3rd and King. (Fun fact: Devers never hit more than 16 in a single season at Fenway.)

The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2026 NFL season as one of the league's most interesting teams. They failed to even make the playoffs last season, but after a great offseason, many have the belief that the team can end their 30-year drought to win the Super Bowl this season.
Last season, the Cowboys' offence was exciting and forced many to believe it was among the best in the league.

Ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, HoopsHype is releasing rankings at every position. While Fred VanVleet was rated rather low as a point guard, Rockets star Kevin Durant was recently ranked as one of the best in his position. In a list of the top 27 small forwards in the NBA, Durant placed fifth after averaging 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 ***** ists, 0.8 steals and 0.9 blocks in 78 appearances last season.

This could be interesting. Rookie running back CJ Donaldson is expected to come up from the New Orleans Saints practice squad for Week 1's road game with the Detroit Lions, reports Nick Underhill for NewOrleans.Football. While the Saints will have Travis Etienne Jr. and Kendre Miller in the lineup, veteran rusher Alvin Kamara is questionable to play and Audric Estime has been preemptively ruled out with a thigh injury. This would be one of three times the Saints can elevate Donaldson from the practice squad before they're required to promote him to the 53-man roster.
Donaldson is a bigger back, listed at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, and the Saints took time to figure out what he could do during the preseason and training camp by moving him around the formation as a fullback and halfback. That's a role he's familiar with dating back to his time in college with Ohio State and West Virginia. We know that rookie tight end Oscar Delp isn't playing in Week 1 due to a hamstring injury so maybe Donaldson does more than take some handoffs in short-yardage situations. He could get some opportunities to pave the way as a lead blocker and stand up blitzing defenders in the backfield.
But that doesn't mean he won't get some carries. Even if Etienne is going to take the lion's share of rushing attempts, Kamara isn't likely to see many touches if he does get the green light, being so soon removed from a preseason knee injury. Miller has missed 30 of his 51 possible games with New Orleans because of injuries. It makes sense to have Donaldson available in case of an emergency, if for no other reason than to keep Kamara from being rushed into some unfavorable situations.

The 2024-25 Boston Celtics set the NBA single-season three-point record with 1,457 makes across 82 games. Three different Celtics players made at least 250 threes that season, something no team had ever seen before. The question heading into 2026-27 is whether the Hornets can break the NBA three-point record.
Analyst Tom Haberstroh specifically named Charlotte as a genuine contender. Looking at the roster, it is not hard to see why.
" I think this Charlotte Hornets team, even though they lost LaMelo Ball, who was at times the most high-volume scorer, shooter in the NBA from downtown, still, I think this team, dude, I think they have a chance to break the three-point record next year," Haberstroh said on The Kevin O'Connor Show. Last Saturday, Arizona State defeated Morgan State 70-7 behind former Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley, who threw for a career-high and program-record 387 yards and 6 touchdowns, which, no matter the opponent, is extremely impressive. During his final season with the Wildcats, Boley wasn't highly regarded as a passer, but he always had the potential to improve.
While three Arizona State wide receivers recorded over 100 yards, transfer WR Omarion Miller looks like the biggest threat to the Aggie secondary after reeling in 8 receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown, looking like the Sun Devils' No. 1 receiver. Texas A&M never faced Boley during his time at Kentucky, but you can be sure Mike Elko and DC Lyle Hemphill are well aware of his breakout performance.
While Boley's improved accuracy and touch were impressive, several of his touchdown passes were off short passes or screens, while Morgan State's secondary was, well, very, very bad. Facing Texas A&M's deep cornerback and safety rotation will be his biggest challenge yet while playing inside what should be a near-sold-out Kyle Field.

The Braves bought themselves some margin for error in avoiding certain catastrophic outcomes by winning Friday's opener of this four-game Philly series and the first of seven games against the division rivals in the next 10 for Atlanta. That said, they could still easily get themselves into trouble in the standings through these games against the Phillies. They still have a 4 game buffer with only 5 games left against Philly, and with a two game swing for each game effectively, even just winning another two of the five would be a perfectly fine outcome, maintaining a 3 game lead into mid-September. Anything less than that gets fairly dangerous, however, as going 1-4 in these next 5 games against Philly would leave them clinging to a 1 game lead in the division (assuming the teams perform equivalently in the interluding series. Sunday's pitching matchup would be a good one for Atlanta to take advantage of, with Tyler Mahle having a bunch of success in an Atlanta uniform so far and Aaron Nola having a fairly middling season.

Carl Icahn sharply cut his JetBlue position, selling roughly 8.13 million shares for about $40.4 million between Aug. 17 and Aug. 20, regulatory filings show. The transactions reduced the Icahn Group's interest to around 3.32%, or about 12.5 million shares, from over 10% when the activist investor initially revealed his position in 2024.
That's more than some spring cleaning.
Icahn's smaller stake fell below the amount needed to retain board presence at JetBlue. Jesse Lynn and Steven Miller, directors supported by Icahn, resigned both effective Aug. 24 after the group's ownership fell below the appropriate level, the airline said in an Aug. 27 filing with the SEC.
It is interesting timing for investors. JetBlue is aiming to show that its JetForward turnaround will restore sustainable profitability after years of strategic missteps, excessive expenses, and a failed attempt to combine with Spirit Airlines.

One company rents computing capacity through AWS; the other supplies accelerators and server processors. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) offers more direct operating leverage. Its data-center revenue more than doubled, and customers want an alternative to Nvidia for accelerators and CPUs. If AMD's software improves and hyperscalers deploy Instinct at scale, revenue can grow faster than the broader infrastructure market. Yet it must compete against an entrenched platform while also funding an aggressive roadmap. A second-source narrative is valuable, but only sustained deployments turn it into durable margins.
The common exposure works because Amazon can profit from rising AI consumption regardless of which merchant chip gains share, while AMD can benefit if that consumption creates room for multiple suppliers. The risks also interact. Amazon's own chips could limit AMD's opportunity, and slower cloud utilization would pressure both the buyer of infrastructure and the seller of processors. Both positions could benefit if the market grows faster than those internal conflicts.
Hedge funds moved in the same direction. Amazon ownership rose to 369 funds in the second quarter from 353, while AMD ownership jumped to 164 from 134. Arrowstreet Capital increased its Amazon position 24% to 40.3 million shares, and Marshall Wace raised its AMD common-share stake 3% to 3.9 million shares. As of August 14, 40.1 million AMD shares were sold short, equal to 2.47% of the float and 1.5 days of trading volume. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) offers more direct operating leverage. Its data-center revenue more than doubled, and customers want an alternative to Nvidia for accelerators and CPUs. If AMD's software improves and hyperscalers deploy Instinct at scale, revenue can grow faster than the broader infrastructure market. Yet it must compete against an entrenched platform while also funding an aggressive roadmap. A second-source narrative is valuable, but only sustained deployments turn it into durable margins.
The common exposure works because Amazon can profit from rising AI consumption regardless of which merchant chip gains share, while AMD can benefit if that consumption creates room for multiple suppliers. The risks also interact. Amazon's own chips could limit AMD's opportunity, and slower cloud utilization would pressure both the buyer of infrastructure and the seller of processors. Both positions could benefit if the market grows faster than those internal conflicts.
Hedge funds moved in the same direction. Amazon ownership rose to 369 funds in the second quarter from 353, while AMD ownership jumped to 164 from 134. Arrowstreet Capital increased its Amazon position 24% to 40.3 million shares, and Marshall Wace raised its AMD common-share stake 3% to 3.9 million shares. As of August 14, 40.1 million AMD shares were sold short, equal to 2.47% of the float and 1.5 days of trading volume. The modest short-interest snapshot shows limited reported short positioning in AMD; it does not resolve whether AMD can capture enough of the spending Amazon is helping unleash.

The Chicago Cubs have been waiting for Ben Brown to return from his neck injury, but his season is over, according to Cubs insider Taylor McGregor.
Brown was trying to come back and provide some much-needed help for the Cubs pitching staff. He originally went on the injured list in June. However, after a bridge camp game in late August, he once again started experiencing symptoms of his neck injury.
That setback ultimately sealed his fate. Without Brown coming back, the Cubs will have to rely on the arms they have and potentially some other returning arms. Shelby Miller, Edward Cabrera, Javier ******* ad and Justin Steele could still come and save the Cubs' pitching staff.
The biggest issue for the Cubs has been the bullpen. The Cubs bullpen has a 4.02 ERA on the season, and in the second half, the bullpen has allowed 1.22 home runs per nine innings, ranked eighth-worst in baseball.

Oklahoma City and USA Softball have broken ground on the Choctaw Nation Fieldhouse, a new indoor softball practice facility at Devon Park.
The 30,000-square-foot, split-level brick building is expected to help secure Devon Park as the home of the NCAA Women's College World Series beyond 2035, according to a news release
The facility will include two indoor practice infields, team locker rooms, and areas for sports medicine, player development and administration. An enclosed, climate-controlled connection will link the fieldhouse to the stadium, allowing staff, coaches and players to move between the buildings without exposure to weather.
The $21 million project is funded through the OKC 2025 Bond. The Oklahoma Department of Commerce contributed $8 million for stadium improvements, including new chairback seating, improved practice fields, upgraded sound system and protective features.
"This will be a premier softball performance training facility that continues to grow the softball community nationally," Public Works Director Debbie Miller said in a news release. "Our goal is for this to be designated as a United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee training site and to help secure Oklahoma City as the home of the NCAA Women's College World Series beyond 2035."

Mainland offensive lineman Chevin Davis' suspension appeal was denied by the Florida High School Athletic ***** ociation on Sept. 2, head coach Jerrime Bell confirmed in a text message to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
Davis was ejected from the Buccaneers' opener against Carol City on Aug. 21 when Chiefs defensive tackle Michael Williams Jr. suplexed Mainland quarterback PJ Miller well after the ball had left his hands for a third-quarter incompletion. Davis came to Miller's aid and ***** ped Williams to the ground. He did so a second time when he saw Miller still down a few seconds later.
According to Bell, he was told on the field Davis was ejected for shoving Williams to the ground and standing over him. That was changed to "an open-hand slap or blow" in the official report, per Bell.
Section 30.2.1.1 of the FHSAA handbook states an ejected athlete is ineligible to compete for the remainder of that contest and a minimum of the next game. It can be appealed, as the Bucs did in Davis' case, and the FHSAA can reverse, modify or uphold the suspension.
