Yes, the influencers were posing at every aisle on every changeover, and more than a few fans appeared unclear on the basic concept of "sit your ******* down while the point is going on." But when Shelton and Zverev locked in, unleashing serves that nearly hit 150 mph or lashing shots that skipped a fingernail's width in bounds, the crowd was right there with them, rising and falling, a living thing that pulsed with energy unlike any other stadium in tennis.
Less than 24 hours earlier on the same court, Elena Rybakina finished off Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set triumph of resolve and willpower over emotion and firepower. The women's side of the US Open nearly had an all-American final, with the semifinals featuring Aryna Sabalenka vs. American Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina vs. American Coco Gauff. Unfortunately for the Stars and Stripes, when Thursday night ended, neither Pegula nor Gauff had advanced, with Pegula losing in straight sets and Gauff falling in three.
One of the attendees in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night was former First Lady Michelle Obama. As dissapointing as Thursday's results may have been for the former White House resident, Obama still sent a message of support at the conclusion of the matches.
"Big hugs to CocoGauff!!! She's a joy to watch. Always proud. Go USA Tennis!!" Obama posted on X.
As positive as Obama's message was, many fans on social media took exception to Obama not also addressing Pegula's performance, and questioned if there were racial motivations behind Obama's decision.

Zheng Qinwen pulled off another US Open stunner Monday, beating Iga Swiatek to book a quarter final with Elena Rybakina as men's top seed Alexander Zverev advanced safely to the last eight.
It was one more gritty comeback for Zheng, the Paris Olympics gold medallist and a former world number four now ranked 121st after struggling in the wake of elbow surgery last year.
Zheng had won the last seven games, saving a match point, as she shocked Madison Keys in her previous match.

Elena Rybakina's latest attempt to replace Aryna Sabalenka as world number one came to an abrupt end as she retired injured from her Cincinnati Open quarter-final against Iga Swiatek.
The Kazakh second seed needed to reach the final to knock Sabalenka off the top of the rankings after the Belarusian suffered a surprise defeat by Sara Bejlek in the fourth round on Wednesday.
However, Rybakina managed just five games in her last-eight match against Poland's Swiatek before retiring with a left ankle injury.
Trailing 4-1, the Australian Open champion called for a medical timeout after pulling up at 40-40.
Following a consultation with the trainer, Rybakina played only one more point before quitting.
