After winning his way through WWE's No. 1 contender luchador tournament, Penta finally gets his shot at the World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns in a true spectacle match for the promotion's weekly programming.
Reigns has been embroiled in matters between Solo Sikoa and LA Knight as of late, but his next challenger is former the Intercontinental Champion. South American wrestling fans have already been treated to plenty of excitement over the past week, as WWE delivered a surprise ******* le change when Stephanie Vaquer dethroned Women's World Champion Liv Morgan in her home of Chile. Penta will look to do the same tonight.
Speaking of Intercontinental Champions, the man who dethroned Penta, Chad Gable, will defend his crown tonight against Dragon Lee. Gable has consistently shown respect for luchadors since returning from his run as El Grande Americano. Considering the chemistry he's had with all involved, this match is sure to deliver.
More Money In the Bank qualifier matches are also set to take place on "Raw." On the men's side, Je'Von Evans and Big Cass go at it once again, this time with World Tag Team Champion Austin Theory in the mix. Austria's national team head coach Ralf Rangnick announced his squad for the upcoming international matches this Monday afternoon - and our young goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky can celebrate his very first call-up to the senior national team! According to the coach, the plan is for our keeper to join the senior squad next week for at least the first two matches of the extended international break, before potentially switching to the U21 team for the European Championship qualifiers afterward.
It's certainly something you dream about as a small child. I used to attend open Austria training sessions just to watch, since it was in my neighborhood, and I even took photos with players like David Alaba. I never imagined things would move this fast and that I'd suddenly be there as a player myself, but I'm very grateful to have this opportunity. The call-up actually comes as a surprise to me. I thought that if I were to be included anywhere, it would likely be the U21s - which I would have thought was great, too. I didn't expect to be part of the senior national team right away. I'm just really looking forward to it - though I also know we have two matches coming up before the international break, and those are the priority right now.
Christian Zawieschitzky
Nikolas Veratschnig is also on board! Our wide player was previously named in an Austria squad last year but is still awaiting his international debut for Austria - his strong performances in recent weeks have now earned him another call-up
I'm absolutely delighted - honestly, even more so than before. I was with the national team once before but didn't get any playing time back then. My clear goal in moving to Salzburg was to prove myself again here and earn another call-up to the national team. I am absolutely delighted that this has worked out. I want to show the head coach what I'm capable of, give it my all in training, and make a lasting impression - and perhaps that will be enough to earn some playing time.

There are two Money in the Bank qualifiers so far, Sol Ruca and Bron Breakker. They punched their tickets with wins on Raw.
Friday's episode of WWE Smackdown in Mexico City was eventful, but it didn't have any MITB qualifying matches. We did see Sami Zayn regain the WWE Championship and Damian Priest turn on R-Truth, but no official new qualifiers. Trick Williams announced he has intentions on entering the MITB match, but shortly after, he and Lil Yachty were attacked by Baron Corbin, so it remains to be seen if he will get one of the slots. Here's everything we know about the card. Let's talk wrestling.

How Sabah coach Valdas Dambrauskas went from Lithuanian game show to Champions League history originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
One of the most fascinating stories to come out of the early phases of this year's UEFA Champions League competition involves newly-formed Azerbaijani club Sabah FK and their mercurial coach.
Valdas Dambrauskas has led the young club to not only its first-ever top flight ***** le, but now their first-ever trip to the league phase of any European competition, let alone the Champions League.
Sabah became one of the final league phase qualifiers in the 2026/27 competition as they reversed a 2-1 aggregate deficit to Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the final qualifying round, winning the second leg 5-2 in a stunning comeback. Trailing 4-3 on aggregate heading into stoppage time of the second leg, Tellur Mutallimov scored in the 94th minute to send the match to extra-time, where they would win the game with a pair of goals in the added period.
That sent Sabah to the lucrative league phase, which has changed the trajectory of the club forever.

Nikola Jokić does not do empty optimism. So when the three-time MVP was asked about the Denver Nuggets' decision to trade Peyton Watson and offered a calm ****** sment of the team's future, it carried more weight than the usual offseason platitudes.
After leading Serbia past Victor Wembanyama and France in a FIBA World Cup qualifier, Jokić addressed the multi-team sign-and-trade that sent Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
"I'm happy for Peyton," he said. "He deserved it. We will miss his energy and skill. I don't think about the season yet; we have to play this, but it's gonna be okay."

Team USA picked up its second Group D victory of the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup on Sunday with a narrow 55-52 win over Italy in a game that turned into an upset scare.
The Americans came into the matchup with plenty of confidence. When the U.S. faced Italy in the World Cup qualifiers in March, it won 93-59. Sunday's rematch was a different story.
The United States got out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter using quick possessions and stifling defense. Italy slowly clawed back into the game in the second and third quarters as it played better defense as a team, swapping between zone and man-to-man schemes.
Team USA also went ice cold shooting from the field. The Americans continued to attempt 3s, but didn't make one until Paige Bueckers connected from deep with 1:50 left in the third quarter. Before that first make, the U.S. was 0-10 from beyond the arc.
The Americans went into the fourth quarter up 42-39. This started plenty of back-and-forth action in the final frame.

A win at Darlington counts the same in the standings as any other NASCAR Cup Series victory. But the Southern 500 has never been just another race.
First run in 1950, the Southern 500 has grown into one of NASCAR's crown-jewel races, combining more than 75 years of history with a Labor Day tradition and a winner's list filled with some of the sport's biggest names.
Why the Southern 500 Is One of NASCAR's Crown-Jewel Races
Darlington Raceway opened in 1950 as NASCAR's first paved superspeedway and hosted the inaugural Southern 500. Seventy-five cars entered and roughly 25,000 fans showed up to watch, but it was Johnny Mantz, the slowest qualifier in the entire field, who ultimately won. While other drivers spent the race battling tire failures, Mantz used hard-compound truck tires to outlast the field and drive his way into NASCAR history. Darlington Raceway
Over the decades, the Southern 500 became closely tied to Labor Day weekend and established itself among NASCAR's biggest events. Its status was reinforced in 1985 when the race became one of four included in the Winston Million, a $1 million bonus available to a driver who could win three of NASCAR's major races. Bill Elliott secured the bonus by winning the Southern 500 that year, and Jeff Gordon repeated the accomplishment in 1997. NASCAR

Edin Dzeko will play a 152nd and final match for Bosnia-Herzegovina next month before ending his 19-year international career.
In an emotional post on Instagram, the 40-year-old striker wrote he would be retiring from national team duty after a Nations League qualifier against Sweden in the Bosnian city of Zenica on Oct. 2.
"Now I feel the time has come to step aside," wrote Dzeko, who played for Bosnia at this year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. "If I have made it to the age of 40 with the national team it is because I truly gave everything I had. Every time. Everything."
Dzeko has 73 goals for Bosnia and has often carried the team on his shoulders. He also played, and scored, at the World Cup in 2014 — Bosnia's first as an independent soccer nation since the former Yugoslavia broke up in regional wars during his childhood.
"I just hope you will be there that night against Sweden, so we can share one more emotion," Dzeko wrote. "Because every one of these incredible moments has been something we have lived together.

CBF president Samir Xaud visited Pedro Pedrossian Stadium, known as Morenão, in Campo Grande on the morning of this Wednesday (2), on the eve of the inauguration of the Football Development Center of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Opened in 1971 and with a capacity of more than 40,000 fans, the main stage of football in Mato Grosso do Sul is receiving an investment of around R$ 1 million from the CBF to revitalize the pitch.
Xaud was accompanied by the president of the Mato Grosso do Sul Football Federation (FFMS), Estevâo Petrallás, who presented the stadium's history and detailed the progress of the work, as well as the president of the Mato Grosso Football Federation (FMF), Diogo Pécora, and the State Secretary of Tourism, Sports and Culture (Setesc), Alessandro Menezes.

In an interview with CBF TV, the CBF president commented on the importance of the institutional agenda in Mato Grosso do Sul and praised the history and renovation work at Morenão. The stadium has also hosted Brazil national team matches: a 1-1 draw with Paraguay on February 27, 1991, in a friendly; and a goalless draw with Venezuela on October 14, 2009, in the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.
"Today we began our institutional visit to Mato Grosso do Sul, continuing our work toward more participatory management and closer ties with the federations. We are here at Morenão, a stadium with a history shared by the entire state population, and where the CBF has provided funds to help revitalize the stadium, including replacing the pitch, irrigation and drainage. For us, it is another joy to work to help Brazilian football as a whole and the smaller federations," he said.

Less than 48 hours after six players automatically qualified for the International Team's 2026 Presidents Cup roster, Captain Geoff Ogilvy identified the other half dozen members on Tuesday.
Si Woo Kim, the only player in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking on the 12-man team, headlines the International side at Medinah Country Club later this month.
Of the automatic qualifiers, three are major champions — Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyma and Ryan Fox, with Fox' triumph at Royal Birkdale vaulting him to No. 25 in the OWGR. The other two automatic qualifying bids went to Min Woo Lee and Tom Kim, who round out the world's top 30 players as of Sept. 1.
While Ogilvy's captain's picks bring a combined zero major championships to the table, Sungjae Im, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Corey Conners do carry experience having played at Quail Hollow in 2022 and Royal Montreal in 2024 — both tournaments won by the Americans.
The other three captain's picks are far more green in terms of history on this stage (see: none). Those players are Colombia's Nico Echavarria, ***** an's Ryo Hisatsune and Canada's Nick Taylor.

Paige Bueckers sees her first major tournament for the U.S. women's national team alongside fellow newcomers Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese as the natural course of one generation replacing another.
The Dallas Wings star wants to be clear, though. This FIBA World Cup — not to mention any Olympic or other international event that might follow — isn't some sort of entitlement.
"We don't take it for granted and think we're entitled to it just because we feel like it's our time now," Bueckers said. "We had to earn it, we had work for it and we're all extremely grateful for that. We've been competing with and against each other our whole lives, and something that I admire is their work ethic and what it took to get here."
Team USA begins pursuit of a fifth consecutive World Cup ***** le against China on Friday in Berlin in the first of three games in group play. The WNBA is taking a nearly three-week break to accommodate the tournament.
For Bueckers, Indiana's Clark and Atlanta's Reese, it means putting aside thoughts of the looming WNBA playoffs to start what each would hope is a long international career. They were together when the U.S. won a World Cup qualifier in Puerto Rico in March.

Deni Avdija has become a standout in the NBA, and is by far Israel's best player. But the Portland Trail Blazers didn't let him play with his team this summer.

After a disappointing first-round exit against eventual finalists San Antonio Spurs, Avdija geared up to join the Israeli national team ahead of their first round of FIBA World Cup qualifying games.

NASCAR's championship format changed for 2026, so before the final 10 races begin, let's make The Chase make sense.
Following the 26-race regular season, the top 16 drivers in the Cup Series standings advance to The Chase. Unlike the previous playoff format, winning a race does not automatically secure a spot. Drivers must earn their way into the championship battle through points.
Once the field is set, the standings reset based on each driver's regular-season position. The regular-season champion begins The Chase with 2,100 points, followed by the second seed at 2,075 and the third at 2,065. From there, the total decreases by five points per position until the 16th seed starts at 2,000.
That creates a 100-point gap between first and 16th before the postseason even begins, rewarding drivers for an entire season of consistency rather than treating every qualifier equally.
Then, it becomes a 10-race sprint to the championship.

However, he had no such issues against former world number 20 Machac, wrapping up a 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory in just over 90 minutes to register his first win at a Grand Slam.

DAYTONA BEACH — As an observer, Austin Cindric enjoyed watching Ryan Preece punch his own ticket into NASCAR's Cup Series playoffs. That doesn't mean it came without a little bit of stress, and a lot of communication, before the two-lap overtime period began.
Cindric had all the information he needed as it pertained to fuel and, more importantly, how it pertained to points. He held on for a sixth-place **** e Zero Sugar 400 finish at Daytona International Speedway, good enough to secure one of the final spots into the 16-driver postseason field.
"I know it might sound weird, but it was kind of fun to watch," Cindric said of Preece's victory. "The guy drove a **** of a race, and wins because of it. That doesn't happen at these (events) super often."
Buy our Dale Earnhardt book here
Cindric is one of six playoff qualifiers without a win from the season's 26 races, along with Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson, Chris Buescher, William Byron and Bubba Wallace. The 27-year-old entered the night with a 44-point gap above the cut line, thanks to five previous top-10s and 113 stage points.

In a conference long known for its stout defenses, being recognized as the top player on that side of the ball is no easy feat. The last five winners reflect that. Since 2021, the last four winners of the award — Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan), Jack Campbell (Iowa), Jer'Zhan Newton (Illinois), and Abdul Carter (Penn State) — have made their presence felt on Sundays in the NFL. Caleb Downs, who is the most recent winner, was selected No. 11 overall by the Dallas Cowboys and could be in for a highly impactful rookie campaign.
Typically, I like to present a list of options and riddle the breakdown with several pumpfakes that'll make you believe I'm picking that player to take home the award later this year. Not this time.
2026 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year: EDGE Anthony Smith, Minnesota
Last season, Smith was a disruptor. He finished the year with 21 solo tackles and 12.5 sacks. Those numbers are sometimes inflated in blowout wins against non-Power Five opponents, but that wasn't the case for Smith. The Golden Gophers opened the season against Buffalo and Northwestern State (FCS). Smith had just two sacks during that stretch, despite the victory over NWSU coming in the form of a 66-0 shellacking. He did add two sacks against a Non-Power Five foe, but that was in the Rate Bowl against New Mexico, so you can't dock him there.
Smith isn't my pick because he's the best defender. Nor is he my pick because Cleveland.com has the same projection. The team with the most candidates is Oregon. If the Ducks live up to expectations, they'll boast one of the most balanced defenses. With their mixture of talent and depth, we probably won't see any extraordinary stat lines from a Duck defender. This is where Smith benefits. If the award is not given to the best defender on the best defensive team, the second qualifier will boil down to numbers. Smith has already proven that he's capable of posting big ones.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama played his first game as captain, leading France to a dominant 92-67 win over Slovenia in the ongoing FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers. He finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, and five three-pointers on 6-for-10 shooting from the field in under 22 minutes of action.
During his postgame interview with L'Equipe, Wembanyama didn't want all the credit. So, the San Antonio Spurs center paid homage to his frontcourt partner, Rudy Gobert, who had nine points, seven rebounds, and two blocks on 9-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line.

"Everything depends on the circumstances. At halftime, we had almost the same score as we did against Serbia in the friendly game. We made mistakes in the previous game that we didn't repeat today. It wasn't perfect. You have to know how to find the right words depending on the context," Wembanyama said.
"That's normal," he added about his improving chemistry with Gobert. "That's the only direction it's supposed to go. I hope to share the court with him for a long time, for years. It's good. It's a step forward. We're working."

On Saturday, our ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga away tour takes us to face another set of last season's championship group opponents. Following matches against SK Sturm Graz and FK Austria Vienna, we now take on the perennial Austrian champions. Our team faces SKN St. Pölten at 14:00 CEST, with the match broadcast live on ORF Sport+.
As is well known, our previous encounters with the other top teams did not go as hoped. After a perfect start to the season taking maximum points from two games - our Salzburg side was unable to secure further results against these tough opponents. Now, a new opportunity arises - albeit against a team that boasts a flawless league record under their coach Laurent Fassotte and was in action on the European stage just yesterday. It remains to be seen how much energy was drained by a Women's Champions League qualifier against Italian heavyweights Juventus - a match the Old Lady won decisively, 3–0. Last season, we had to yield to the eventual runners-up, with the She-Wolves winning all four of our head-to-head clashes. Oliver Fix will officiate this showdown at the NV Arena.
In St. Pölten, we face our next top opponents and, consequently, a major challenge. For us, the key is to work for one another and stick to our principles, even under pressure.

Luka Doncic's unofficial Los Angeles Lakers minicamp, which he held in his native Slovenia, is now over. All of his teammates took part in that minicamp, except for rookie Cameron Carr, who was required to attend an NBA rookie orientation.
Sandro Mamukelashvili, a big man the Lakers signed earlier this summer, attended the minicamp, but he left early in order to play for his native Georgia in the qualifier games for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. He didn't disappoint, as he dropped 20 points, six rebounds, six ****** ists and three steals. Thanks in large part to him, Georgia shoved past Israel for a 101-90 victory.
Georgia's first official qualifier contest of the second round will take place on Friday against Montenegro. Three days later, it will take on Greece, sans Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Slovenia is also vying for a spot in the FIBA World Cup, but Doncic already said that he won't play in any qualifying games this summer.

ATLANTA – The Tour Championship is officially changing in 2028.
In the first year that the Tour will move to a Championship and Challenger Series format, the Tour will shift to a 90-man field for a stroke-play event to determine the season-long points winner. Only 32 will move on to a two-week match-play competition at rotating venues for the newly christened Tour Championship.
The first week will include World Cup-style group play, with the 32 qualifiers broken into eight groups of fours. The top two will advance to the final week, with ties decided in a sudden-death playoff.
The finale will be at a separate venue. Week two is four rounds of match play. All 16 players competing all four rounds. Every match impacts the final standings. The player who goes undefeated will be crowned the winner of the Tour Championship.
"This new format creates an exciting opportunity to showcase some of the most renowned venues in our sport, including places like the modern Tour has never been before," Rolapp said in a release. "Since our announcement in June, we have received a tremendous level of interest from prospective host venues. As a result, multiple discussions are underway, site visits have begun and we are encouraged by the enthusiasm we are seeing for the future of the Tour Championship."

Portugal have found a rather unexpected way to avenge their FIFA World Cup heartbreak against Spain.

Just over a month after Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by their neighbours, Portugal got one back — not on a football pitch, but on a cricket field.

Portugal defeated Spain by 57 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub Regional Qualifier C in 2026, ending Spain's campaign and keeping their own dream of reaching the 2028 T20 World Cup alive.

The football defeat had come in July, when Spain edged Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, USA. Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal in stoppage time of regulation time, sending Ronaldo's Portugal out of the tournament.

This time, though, it was Portugal celebrating at Spain's expense.
Led by former Australia international Moises Henriques, Portugal produced a composed performance to claim the crucial qualifying victory.

Spain captain Christian Munoz-Mills won the toss and chose to field, but Portugal built a competitive total of 160/6.

Dhavalkumar Norotam made 23 and Christopher De Freitas scored 39 as Portugal made a steady start without quite managing to dominate the Spanish attack. Henriques, meanwhile, contributed 18 but could not convert his start into a substantial innings.

Portugal accelerated late in the innings through Craig Cachopa, who struck 25 off 21 ****** , while Carlos Nunes added 15 off nine. Jeremy Martins provided an important final push with an unbeaten 18 off just eight deliveries.

Yasir Ali and Lorne Burns were Spain's best bowlers, taking two wickets apiece.

Spain's chase initially threatened to become interesting, but Portugal's bowlers quickly put the brakes on the pursuit.

Sebastian de Oliveira made the breakthrough early, while Martins also chipped in as Portugal reduced Spain to 32/3. Yasir Ali and Daniel Doyle Calle then began rebuilding the innings and gave Spain hope of mounting a serious chase.
Siraj Ullah Khadem changed the complexion of the contest in the 11th over when he bowled Yasir for 29.

With the pitch making life difficult for incoming batters, Portugal steadily tightened their grip. Khadem finished with impressive figures of 2/19, while Edward Fleming delivered the decisive blow with a three-wicket haul for just 13 runs.

Spain's promising chase soon turned into a procession, and Martins completed the job by bowling Lorne Burns as Portugal wrapped up a 57-run victory.

The triumph sends Portugal into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in 2027, putting them one step closer to a place in the global qualifying tournament for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

Portugal join Jersey and Denmark in the Europe Qualifier, while Scotland enter directly because of the exceptional circumstances surrounding their participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Italy and the Netherlands, meanwhile, advance directly to the Global Qualifier.
