NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman's support for Elon Musk's idea to put AI data centers in **** e and power them with solar panels did not occur in a vacuum. It comes not just against a background of rising, bipartisan opposition to ground-based data centers but also the recent announcement of an immense, **** eX Starbase to be built in Louisiana.
Many people oppose data centers out of the same kind of "NIMBY" emotion that fueled opposition to nuclear power plants and hydraulic fracking. They view them as big, noisy eyesores that will consume a lot of electricity and water to the detriment of local communities.
Opposition to ground-based AI data centers is not universal. Trade unions, which foresee lots of jobs being created in their construction and operation, are warmly supporting them. On the other hand, if Meta's experiments with using robots at data centers pans out, those jobs may be fewer than many expect.
The reason that many people are opposed to AI data centers in their communities may have less to do with objective facts than a Chinese disinformation campaign to turn them against such facilities. Engadget reports that X uncovered a Chinese bot farm with 200,000 accounts, 200 of which were used to manipulate the debate about data centers.
It should be noted that the Chinese are going pedal to the metal to create their own data centers. As a totalitarian country, China is not concerned with public opinion one way or the other. Beijing is determined to dominate AI according to its ideology and interests.

Donald Trump posted the apparently AI-created picture on Truth Social Sunday, showing Robert De Niro holding a red shirt emblazoned with "TRUMP IS MY PRESIDENT." The president added his own jab, writing, "Even this jerk is beginning to get it," while offering no indication that the actor had actually changed his political position (via The Independent).
De Niro has spent decades building one of Hollywood's most respected acting careers. His résumé includes Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, while his performances have earned him two Academy Awards. Away from the screen, however, he has become equally recognizable for his outspoken opposition to Trump.
That stance stretches back years. Before the 2016 election, De Niro branded Trump a "pig," "punk," and "bulls*** artist." Chelsea's interest in Lamine Camara has not gone away, and his latest display for Monaco has only intensified the feeling that this is a story with plenty left to run. According to TeamTalk, scouts from Chelsea and Liverpool were among a number of Premier League clubs in Paris on Friday night as Monaco claimed an eye-catching win over Paris Saint-Germain, with Camara playing a central part.
The backdrop made the performance even more significant. When the Bundesliga schedule was first confirmed and it became clear Schalke 04 would host Bayern Munich on jut the second Bundesliga matchday, the expectation was that Die Königsblauen would be swept aside rather convincingly. After all, the team's last meeting, three years ago, ended 6-0 to Bayern. That was under Thomas Tuchel's inconsistent Bayern. What could Kompany & Co do?
Stutter to a 0-0 draw, that is what. A dour Bayern team struggled to get out of second gear and really punish a defensively solid Schalke, who celebrate their first point since their return to the Bundesliga. Here are some observations on the match:
It is easy to forget after the match, but the first 15 minutes completely belonged to Bayern. The Bavarians' counterpress utterly suffocated the hosts, who simply could not exit their own half in those minutes. The team pinged the ball around, kept it well and utterly annihilated any counter attacks.
But, in what would become an unfortunate running theme throughout the match, the passing was far too slow and the players seemed unsure of their positions. One of Bayern's most important strengths is their ability to move the ball quickly from side to side. Players know their positions, know how to move the ball on and ping it back and forth. This forces the opposition defense to move side to side, which opens up **** e in the middle and opportunities to score.
This was missing today. It was clear that the chemistry among forwards Nathaniel Brown, Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl was missing, but regulars such as Konrad Laimer, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano also struggled to really get into the flow of things. It was possible to overcome these issues (Nathaniel Brown, after all, would still have given Bayern the lead if it had not been for a phenomenal save by Loris Karius in the Schalke goal) and perhaps the players would have grown into the match more.

Actress and liberal activist Jane Fonda had some surprisingly positive things to say about Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison despite her complete opposition to a merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
Fonda took questions this week at the DVF Awards charity gala held during the Venice Film Festival, and she said she likes Ellison "very much," which makes her vocal opposition to his $111 billion merger a bit awkward.
"It's sad for me because I like David Ellison very much," Fonda said, according to Variety.
The 88-year-old actress noted Ellison's Skydance financed her Netflix series Grace and Frankie which ended in 2022.
"David's Skydance financed Grace and Frankie, my seven-year-long run for Netflix, and I got to know him, and I like him. But that doesn't change things. This is not a personal thing. This is what it will do to the entertainment industry, which is already suffering terribly," Fonda said.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has been speaking to the media before his side's Scottish Premiership match at home to Motherwell on Saturday. Here are his main points:

A football player has been banned for 10 matches after an independent panel found he had made a discriminatory comment towards an opposition player.
Alex Francis, of Salford's Irlam FC, had denied making the comments against a Hallam FC player during an FA Cup match in Sheffield on 9 August, which an FA spokesperson said included a reference to nationality.
The FA said an independent National Serious Case Panel found the allegation to be proven following a hearing and said Francis had until 4 September to appeal against the decision.
Hallam FC secretary Ashley Carson said the punishment was "rightly deserved", adding: "We don't support this sort of thing going on." Irlam FC declined to comment.
The player's suspension is due to start on Monday.

Penn State football finally kicks off for the 2026 season this weekend and there is a lot to be excited about. The program is gaining momentum as a College Football Playoff contender in the first year under new head coach Matt Campbell thanks to a relatively light schedule.
That favorable 12-game slate opens with a matchup against Marshall, a team that the Nittany Lions haven't faced in nearly a century. Fans of the team likely don't keep track of what's going on with Thundering Herd football, so we did the work of scoring the opposition for them.
After doing the research, the most dangerous player on the offensive side of the ball appears to be quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. None of his passing stats jump off the screen with 2,047 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. But it's his dual-threat ability that makes him frightening.
He also ran for 660 yards and added six touchdowns on the ground, so he can hurt Penn State's defense in a variety of ways. It might be a good idea to keep a spy around the line of scrimmage just in case Del Rio-Wilson has plans of running around Saturday afternoon.
Another thing to note about the Marshall quarterback is that he previously played at Syracuse. While he didn't see the field much there, it's significant that he has experience against Power 4 competition. Del Rio-Wilson will do his best to ensure that the Nittany Lions don't cruise to an easy victory, so they need to be prepared to scratch and claw for a while this weekend.

Barclays now expects the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its September and December meetings, reversing a prior forecast of no changes through the remainder of the year, after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish address at the annual Jackson Hole symposium last Friday, according to Reuters.
The Wall Street brokerage described Warsh's speech as "notably hawkish" and said it offered an implicit case for further tightening, according to Reuters. Each of the two projected increases would amount to 25 basis points. The Fed's benchmark federal funds rate currently stands at a target range of 3.5% to 3.75%.
Barclays did note that near-term monthly inflation prints are likely to look considerably cooler than the longer-horizon gauges Warsh cited, but warned that base effects would undercut any apparent improvement in those annual measures before December. Traders are **** igning a 60.4% probability to a September hike, CME Group's FedWatch tool showed.
Warsh's Jackson Hole address, his first keynote at the event as Fed chair, drew significant market attention as his clearest opportunity to fill what had been a deliberate communications void since he took office in May. Warsh told the symposium that policymakers would "have work to do" if they lacked confidence that inflation was returning to the Fed's 2% target. In his remarks, Warsh cast inflation as unacceptably elevated, judged prevailing financial conditions to be doing too little to restrain demand, and described the labor market as operating at or near full employment.
Warsh reinforced his opposition to providing explicit forward guidance, declining to spell out the conditions that would trigger a policy response. "I stand here today committed to a discipline, not to a decision," he said. He acknowledged that this summer's inflation readings came in better than expected but said they did not show meaningful improvement in underlying price trends. The 2-year Treasury yield climbed following the remarks, and traders raised the odds of a September rate increase.

Before purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers with Bob Iger, Josh Kushner and his company — Thrive — were at the center of another major purchase. Kushner was expected to be one of the main characters at the center of Gianni Infantino's plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

Conservative podcaster Tucker Carlson said Friday that President Trump should be removed from office if he is considering using nuclear weapons first, saying even entertaining the possibility should disqualify a president from serving.
"The second any president actively considers the first use of nuclear weapons, that person should be removed from office immediately, because that's got to be the red line, destroying all of humanity with a nuclear strike," Carlson said.
Carlson made the comments during a conversation with Joe Kent, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center who resigned earlier this year in opposition to the war with Iran.
Carlson, who noted that he strongly opposed both efforts to impeach Trump during his first term, questioned why the same standard would not apply if a president were weighing a nuclear first strike.
"Why isn't there an attempt to remove him from office, like, immediately?" Carlson said. "Anyone who would even tolerate that kind of talk from any of his subordinates or employees is by definition unfit."

PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov hasn't entered the UFC yet, but he's already talking trash about the quality of opposition he may face when he gets there.
Nurmagomedov fought the last fight on his PFL contract last month, and recently revealed he turned down a $2 million per fight offer from the organization in order to wait out the 90 day exclusive negotiation period and see what other promotions might offer him. NEW DELHI: India captain Shubman Gill said "Test cricket won today" after Sri Lanka fought hard to force a draw in the second Test in Colombo on Thursday. India had controlled much of the match and were in a strong position to push for victory.

However, Sonal Dinusha produced another outstanding innings, scoring his second century of the match and staying unbeaten as Sri Lanka survived 154 overs.

The result saw India finish the two-Test series with a 1-0 victory.
Gill said India made every possible effort during Sri Lanka's long second innings but could not break through their resistance.

"We fielded for about 150 overs, we did everything that we can. I don't think we could have done anything differently. Keeping the weather in mind, we could talk about these things (enforcing follow-on) only in hindsight.

"You take the best decision you can in the moment and something didn't go our way. But it was a brilliant game and I think Test cricket won today," Gill said after the match here on Thursday.

Gill also gave credit to Sri Lanka for their fightback and said India could learn from the way the hosts responded under pressure.

"A lot of positives for us, learning from the opposition. The way they came back, it was tremendous to see. I don't think we could have done things differently. They bowled brilliantly in this game."

UConn football made waves on Wednesday by revealing a new red alternate jersey. It'll be the first time any team at the school has ever worn a uniform with red as the primary color.
Reviews have been mixed online. Some people love them — the players certainly reacted positively in a video posted by the team — but those who don't have been vocal in their displeasure. That same split occurred among The UConn Blog's hierarchy with Dan Madigan supporting the new look and Daniel Connolly among the opposition.
Let's embrace debate.
Connolly: I'd rather have a team go bold and fail when designing a jersey or uniform than do something that's safe but boring. UConn absolutely went bold with red jerseys, which I can respect. I'm just not sure I like them. As someone who's been clamoring for an alternate jersey for years, I was thrilled when the team teased such on social media earlier in the week. But when I saw the reveal, I was immediately disappointed. It just doesn't look like a UConn jersey. I'm willing to reserve judgement until I see them on the field in game action, but I'm giving them a thumbs-down for now.
Madigan: When UConn teased this reveal earlier in the week, I told our blog chat with Dan and Aman Kidwai that I would love to see a red jersey, but I was convinced that this would be the light/powder blue uniform they teased last April Fool's Day. I was pretty surprised to actually see the red jersey on socials on Wednesday, but I like the look. This uniform template of the past few years is quite literally as boring as it gets — there's no piping, striping or accents anywhere — so it's a lot of red and it's certainly bold. It's definitely not a subtle way to introduce the color, but I think it will look much better in real life on the Rentschler Field grass. I still wish there was more going on with these UConn uniforms overall, but I am all for this red look, and I think it will look great if they ever pair it with navy helmets and navy pants.

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has apologised to Blues fans on the back of Tuesday's 6-1 Carabao Cup exit at home to Brentford.
It was Blues' heaviest defeat since losing by the same 6-1 scoreline at Hull City under then caretaker boss Lee Carsley following Harry Redknapp's departure in September 2017.
And it was the worst at St Andrew's since the club record 8-0 home defeat by Bournemouth in October 2014, another performance under a caretaker boss, Malcolm Crosby, who had taken over in the wake of Lee Clark's departure.
"I can only apologise to the fans that came and spent their money coming to the club to watch their team tonight," Davies told BBC Radio WM. "That's not what any of us want."

An entertainment industry group that includes Hollywood producers Haim Saban, Lawrence Bender and Teddy Schwarzman has released a statement condemning the alleged "antisemitic tropes" underpinning Mark Ruffalo's opposition to Paramount's leadership amid its proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
The statement comes from a group calling itself The Brigade, which describes itself as "a group of nearly 1,000 members, friends, and allies of the Jewish community who are proud to be working in film, television, music, Broadway, social and digital, and other platforms in and around the entertainment industry."

The SEC has joined the Big Ten in preventing former NFL players and other professional athletes from returning to play college sports. The conference announced the new policy Tuesday evening following a meeting of the conference's presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in Birmingham, Alabama.
The new policy was passed unanimously after a 16-0 vote by SEC presidents. The rule's three provisions prohibit former pros from returning to campus. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has been given the authority to penalize any program that breaks the new rules.
Tuesday's policy announcement from the SEC also comes less than 24 hours after the conference's presidents and chancellors released a statement voicing their opposition to former student-athletes returning to the college ranks after competing professionally.

Hannah Einbinder has come out strongly in defense of Mark Ruffalo as the actor faces an accusation of "antisemitism" from Paramount Skydance over his opposition to the studio's deal for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
Paramount accused Ruffalo of antisemitism after the actor drew links between Larry Ellison's tech giant Oracle and the Israeli military. Larry Ellison is the father of Paramount CEO David Ellison and provided much of the funding that allowed David Ellison's Skydance to merge with Paramount Global in 2025 and is also heavily involved in the financing of Paramount's merger with WBD.

John Cusack has publicly backed Mark Ruffalo in the actor's increasingly heated fight with Paramount Skydance over its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Cusack quote-posted Ruffalo's response to the company over the weekend and added just three words: "Solidarity - well said." Paramount had said the actor invoked "antisemitic tropes" while arguing against the deal.
Ruffalo called that accusation "appalling and fundamentally dishonest." He said his criticism concerned Israeli government policy, a military technology contract and the corporate executives involved, and that his views "should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people."
The confrontation began after Ruffalo shared footage of Oracle executive vice chair and Paramount board member Safra Catz discussing technology Oracle made available to Israel after the Hamas-led attacks of Oct. 7, 2023. He connected the clip to Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, whose son David Ellison is Paramount's chairman and CEO, and to his wider opposition to the Warner Bros. transaction.
Cusack offered no further explanation with his post. The message accompanied Ruffalo's full statement, which defended scrutiny of Oracle's government contracts and data and surveillance businesses while raising concerns about possible job losses and editorial independence if the acquisition proceeds.

It was a treble of sorts, though not one that brought the match ball or any cause for celebration.
