PALOS DE LA FRONTERA, Spain (AP) — Matthew Brennan enhanced his status as the standout sprinter at the Spanish Vuelta by winning his fourth stage Tuesday in the 21-year-old British rider's Grand Tour debut.
Brennan was delivered to the front of the bunch with 100 meters left by an ideal leadout from Wout van Aert, his star teammate at Visma-Lease a Bike who already won two stages at this Vuelta.
Crossing the line, Brennan raised his right hand with four fingers out in a victory salute. Bryan Coquard was second and Vito Braet third. Van Aert was sixth at the end of a 181-kilometer (112.5 miles) ride in more blazing heat from Cortegana to Palos de la Frontera.
After 16 stages, overall leader Enric Mas retained his advantage in the red jersey of 2 minutes, 6 seconds ahead of Felix Gall. Primož Roglič is a further 4 second back in third.
Wednesday's stage is another flat ride into Seville before a 32.5-km (20.2-mile) time trial Thursday that could be key for Roglič.

In the coming weeks, Jose Mourinho will take charge of his first pre-season since returning as Real Madrid head coach. The Portuguese made his triumphant return to the Bernabeu 13 years after his first spell in charge came to an end, and he hopes to be the one that turns things around after a dismal couple of years.
The last major trophy won by Real Madrid was the 2023-24 Champions League over two years ago. Since then, they have been comfortably second-best to Barcelona in La Liga, while they were bested by ***** nal and Bayern Munich in Europe, both times at the quarter-final stage. They cannot afford to go another season without success, which is why Florentino Perez has turned to Mourinho.
Many current Real Madrid players have welcomed Mourinho’s return, and now former star Joselu Mato has had his say on Iker Casillas’ Bajo los palos podcast. As per MD, the veteran striker also believes the Portuguese can be the right man at the right time, given that he will command a lot of authority in the dressing room.
“Mourinho is a coach with a lot of character, with ideas that Madrid need because they need a change and he is a coach who has what it takes to put people in their place. Can he be the best option? We won’t know that until the months go by. But Real Madrid need discipline, especially within the dressing room. A club like Real Madrid cannot afford to go two years without winning any ***** le.”
The last 12 months under Xabi Alonso and the Alvaro Arbeloa showed that Real Madrid need a manager that can manage a dressing room – especially one with big egos. Mourinho is very capable of this, but it remains to be seen whether that is enough to get things back on track at the Bernabeu.

In terms of one-season wonders, perhaps no one was better for Real Madrid than Joselu Mato. The veteran striker joined on loan from Espanyol in the summer of 2023 without much expectations, but in the end, he would become a cult hero during his short spell at the Bernabeu.
Joselu played 49 times across all competitions for Real Madrid during the 2023-24 season, scoring 18 goals – numbers made more impressive given that he was primarily utilised as an impact sub. His two biggest strikes came when he played that role to perfection in the Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Bayern Munich, as he scored a late brace to send Carlo Ancelotti’s side into the final, which they won 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund to seal a 15th **** le.
As per Diario AS, Joselu has been speaking on his time at Real Madrid during an interview with Iker Casillas on Bajo Los Palos. In particular, he spoke on his decision leave for Qatari side Al-Gharafa, whose contract offer was simply too good to refuse for both him and his family.
“Ancelotti calls me… And I can tell you that the first month I had a hard time, because they put a lot of energy on me. But the decision to leave Real Madrid is going to weigh on me all my life because what I have experienced there I will never live again. But the decision to think about my children, my wife and their future, I think that right now is ahead of any sporting issue.”
There is no doubt that Joselu will always remain a cult hero at the Bernabeu. His exploits during that 2023-24 season were remarkable, and he more than earned the chance to set his family up for life after only 12 months in the Spanish capital.
