Pennsylvania state Rep. David Maloney, a Republican, is asking President Donald Trump to rename Lake Erie to "Lake Pennsylvania" following similar renaming efforts by the president.
Maloney is preparing a resolution calling on Trump, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and lawmakers on Capitol Hill to take steps to rename Lake Erie to "Lake Pennsylvania," arguing that the change is needed to reflect the lake's modern identity.
"This is Pennsylvania's only Great Lake. Its modern economy and identity are increasingly tied to the boaters, anglers, families and tourists who come to enjoy it," Maloney said in a statement. "Ohio has plenty of shoreline. New York already has two Great Lakes. Canada has four others."

Roberto Mancini was in the stands at the Stade Jean-Bouin to monitor the progress of two potential Italy internationals as Paris FC hosted Lyon.
According to L'Équipe, the Italy boss travelled to the French capital specifically to watch defender Diego Coppola and forward Luca Koleosho, both of whom started for the hosts. The pair have been capped twice each at senior level for the Azzurri.

Paris FC now carry a distinctly Italian flavour after Coppola arrived permanently from Brighton this summer, while Koleosho completed his own switch from Burnley, having spent the second half of last season on loan at the club. Ciro Immobile was also on the books up until his retirement in the summer.
Koleosho, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, to a Nigerian father and an Italian-Canadian mother, is eligible for the United States, Canada and Nigeria but has committed to Italy, whom he first represented at senior level in June.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Canada might seem an unlikely target for a U.S. trade war.
No country on Earth buys as much from the United States as its northern neighbor. For American farmers, Canada is second only to Mexico as an export market.
A North American trade pact — negotiated by President Donald Trump during his first term — means that most American products enter Canada duty-free. Rankings of the world's most open economies usually put Canada near the top.
But when Trump looks at Canada, he says, he sees a predator out to cheat the United States and strangle its industries.
America has been "ripped off for 50 years by Canada," the president declared Saturday when asked if he was considering pulling out of the three-way agreement he signed with the leaders of Canada and Mexico in late 2018.

Colo Colo's young forward, Leandro Hernández, became one of the biggest surprises in the Chile National Team squad for the North American tour, where they will face Canada, the United States, and Mexico. After establishing himself with the 'Cacique,' the attacker will receive his first call-up to the senior team.
Speaking with Arturo Vidal, the young Alba talent said he is ready for the challenge. "I feel prepared because I think I've improved a lot, especially physically; I used to struggle in physical battles, and today I'm better," said the Colo Colo standout.
Looking ahead to the upcoming matches, Hernández sent a message to coach Nicolás Córdova about his ideal position: he made it clear that he prefers to play centrally as an attacking midfielder rather than out wide, seeking more contact with the ball.

GANDER, Newfoundland (AP) — Standing in the town that sheltered thousands of stranded Americans after the Sept. 11 attacks, former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien marked the 25th anniversary Friday with a pointed message for the United States: "Never mistake our generosity for weakness."
The 92-year-old former leader, who was prime minister at the time of the attacks, drew a standing ovation after telling his "American friends" that Canadians may be tolerant and kind but "we bow to no one." U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra rose afterward and hugged him.
"I say that not in anger, but as one friend to another," Chrétien said. "Friends need to be honest with each other."
The unusually blunt remarks came during a solemn ceremony honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in New York, at the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93, and remembering Gander's extraordinary response to the attacks.
Gander, Newfoundland opened its arms to nearly 6,600 airline passengers diverted there when the U.S. government shut down airspace during 9/11.

TEL AVIV/PSAGOT, West Bank, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Israel has given Britain 30 days to close its East Jerusalem consulate in response to sanctions on goods from settlements, a measure Britain's leader said on Wednesday was needed to "stand against injustice" in the occupied West Bank.
In the West Bank, where Israeli settlements have eaten into territory Palestinians seek for a state, settler business owners said the sanctions — announced on Tuesday by Britain, France and Canada — would dent their revenues and at least one said they could force him to close his date farm.
The sanctions are among the strongest collective actions taken by Western countries that Israel once counted as close allies, highlighting its growing isolation over the war in Gaza and expansion of settlements in occupied territory.

On September 3, VersaBank (NASDAQ:VBNK) reported its results for the third quarter ended July 31, 2026.
The quarter marked another period of record credit **** ets, revenue, and net interest income. Strong growth was supported by continued momentum in the company's Structured Receivable Program (SRP) in the United States and steady growth in Canada.
Fiscal 2026 is proving to be a breakout year for the company in terms of top-line growth and the company expects the momentum to accelerate further in fiscal 2027 based on continued expansion of its US SRP business and the launch of its Real-Time SRP, which the company describes as a breakthrough in point-of-sale industry funding.
After the quarter ended, VersaBank (NASDAQ:VBNK) also achieved a very noteworthy milestone as it surpassed $7 billion in total **** ets for the first time. The company's business continues to expand and it said it is increasingly realizing the operating leverage of its cloud-based, branchless, business-to-business model. Net income rose 53% year-over-year, while adjusted (core) net income increased 27%.
A key part of the bullish case for VersaBank (NASDAQ:VBNK) is the continued expansion of its SRP portfolio in the US. The company set a fiscal 2027 target of at least $3 billion in new SRP fundings on its own balance sheet and also pointed to significant additional upside potential.

President Donald Trump is making his mark on the U.S. economy. The Trump administration's tariff policies (including a trade war with Canada) and the war with Iran have driven up energy prices and contributed to accelerating inflation. This "Trumpflation" is driving up costs across the economy.
Research from the non-profit ****** ytics group Tax Foundation indicates that Trump-backed tariffs increased costs by about $1,000 per U.S. household in 2025 and $840 per household so far in 2026. Tariffs are import taxes levied on goods imported from other countries. Those costs are ultimately borne by U.S. businesses or are often passed on to American consumers.

Trump's war with Iran has caused major disruptions to global shipments of oil and natural gas from the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. That has caused energy prices to go up in 2026. U.S. gasoline prices are back on the rise (but remain down somewhat from their March 2026 high), and diesel prices reached an all-time high national average of $5.897 per gallon as of Sept. 6, according to AAA research. Higher diesel costs are likely to lead to higher inflation for groceries and many consumer products on store shelves that rely on diesel-fueled trucks for distribution to retailers.
Trump seems unlikely to give up on his tariff policies anytime soon, and the Iran conflict might not truly "end" in 2026 or 2027. With an uncertain future of possibly higher inflation and higher energy prices, how should you invest?

GFL Environmental Inc. (NYSE:GFL) completed its acquisition of SECURE Waste Infrastructure, adding a specialized waste and energy-infrastructure platform across Western Canada and North Dakota. At the announcement, the transaction had a C$6.4 billion enterprise value, with shareholder consideration comprising 80% GFL shares and 20% cash.
Closing required the issuance of 75,126,306 subordinate voting shares, capacity under the revolving credit facility, and a new US$1 billion senior secured term loan. The loan matures in August 2033 and carries interest at the Secured Overnight Financing Rate plus 200 basis points. GFL Environmental Inc. (NYSE:GFL) estimates an interest rate of approximately 5% after its cross-currency interest-rate swaps.
SECURE brings a difficult-to-replicate network spanning more than 80 locations, including landfills, waste-treatment and recycling facilities, injection wells and transfer stations. It also operates crude oil terminals, storage facilities and pipeline-connected infrastructure. The ****** ets broaden services and operating density in Western Canada.
More than 2,000 SECURE employees are joining the combined company. SECURE President and Chief Executive Officer Allen Gransch and other managers will continue leading the acquired operations as employees and shareholders. Retaining the operating team should help preserve customer relationships and institutional knowledge during integration.
The acquisition cost is spread across debt and equity. The 2033 maturity provides time for cash generation, while management said the term-loan transaction did not affect the company's credit rating.

Futures on the Comex exchange in New York traded near $6.85 a pound, while copper on the London Metal Exchange touched $14,617 a metric ton to hit a second intraday record in a row.

US buyers have been snapping up more of the commodity in expectation of higher tariffs. The energy transition and AI build-out are also sucking up supply.
On Tuesday, Canada increased levies on certain US imports to 50%, including certain US-made copper products, in response to American tariffs on Canadian products.

Jessica Pegula has advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals after winning back-to-back matches over the holiday weekend.
The Buffalo native rallied past Canada's Leylah Fernandez in the third round on Friday, overcoming a slow start to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.
Pegula acknowledged she is never comfortable facing Fernandez but credited her ability to dig deep after dropping the opening set.
"I knew today, especially the way that I started, I was going to have to dig deep," Pegula told U.S. Open reporters. "I had to find something in the second set to turn it around, but she's a great player, so that was very hard."
Pegula then secured her spot in the quarterfinals on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Romania's Sorana Cirstea. The match featured some early struggles, but Pegula closed it out on her third match point when Cirstea sent a forehand long.

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) reached a tentative three-year labor deal with Unifor that Canadian workers ratified on August 29 and 30, securing more than C$1 billion ($791 million) in new and previously announced investment across Ontario, covering over 4,600 workers.
GM will spend C$144 million to bring next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra production to Oshawa, adding to a previously committed C$343 million there. At St. Catharines, GM will invest C$215 million in a new transmission program starting late 2029, on top of a previously announced C$691 million for V8 engine production. GM also pledged not to immediately sell or close its CAMI plant in Ingersoll while it studies alternatives, including possible defense work if it lands a Canadian Armed Forces contract. The deal lands as Canada's auto sector faces 25% U.S. tariffs, with Trump threatening to double that to 50% on January 1, 2027, and U.S. and Canada trade talks still stalled.
General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) enters this deal from a position of financial strength. GM beat second-quarter expectations with adjusted earnings per share of $3.57 versus the $3.18 estimate and revenue of $48 billion versus the $46.99 billion forecast. The company also raised its full-year guidance for the second time this year, while adjusted automotive free cash flow reached $5 billion, up $2.2 billion year over year. That cash generation gives GM room to fund its Canadian commitments without putting significant pressure on its balance sheet.
The tariff environment has also become more favorable for GM. After the Supreme Court invalidated tariffs imposed under emergency powers, GM lowered its full-year gross tariff-cost estimate to $2.5 billion-$3.5 billion from $3 billion-$4 billion. Protecting Canadian production now could reduce the risk of costly disruptions as GM adjusts its North American manufacturing footprint and responds to changing trade policies.
The agreement also protects GM's pickup and SUV business, which generates some of the company's highest margins. CEO Mary Barra said North American demand remains strong for these vehicles, while the return of Heavy-Duty Sierra production to Oshawa will give GM additional North American capacity for a key product line. Producing more trucks within the region could also help GM reduce its exposure to cross-border tariff costs.

Bank of Nova Scotia (NYSE: BNS) is offering investors a nearly 3.5% yield. The average bank's yield is around 2.2%, and the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has a tiny 1% yield. If you are looking for a high-yield bank stock, Scotiabank, as it is more commonly known, is probably worth a close look. But the real dividend story is about consistency. Here's what you need to know.
Recently, Scotiabank made a major change in its business. For a long time, the Canadian bank had skipped the U.S. market, focusing instead on Central and South America. That differentiated it from its large Canadian peers, which had focused on growth in the U.S. Scotiabank's plans didn't work out as well as hoped, so it shifted gears. Now, like its peers, it is increasing its focus on the U.S., with a goal of offering its services from Mexico to Canada. Those three countries are contiguous and important trading partners.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
What's notable is that Scotiabank has made this shift without resorting to a dividend cut. In fact, the biggest impact that dividend investors felt was a one-year pause in dividend increases. When you look at the company's history, however, that makes total sense. Scotiabank has paid dividends every year since 1833, over 190 years ago. And, unlike many of the largest U.S. banks, it also didn't cut its dividend during the Great Recession.
Scotiabank's efforts to grow in the U.S. market will likely be a net positive, but the real story here isn't about growth. This is a slow-and-steady business that will help you build wealth over time. Dividend reinvestment would allow for powerful compounding, given the above-average yield and incredible dividend history. The real story, then, is consistency, which is powered by the bank's Canadian operations.

Every player on the Detroit Red Wings roster for the club's upcoming NHL Rookie Tournament has carved their own path to get to this destination. They've all written a unique hockey story along the way.
Here's a look at just a few of these tales.
Defenseman Justice Christensen signed an AHL contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He also played in last year's rookie series against the Dallas Stars, back then as a free agent.
Christensen is a hockey world champion, which in itself isn't necessarily unique among the NHL prospects that will be on display at this tourney. That is, until you learn how he won his world ******* le.
In the summer of 2025, Christensen, then a defenseman with the WHL Prince Albert Raiders, captained Canada to the World U20 ball hockey gold medal. He talked about his other hockey passion in an interview on the Raiders' Facebook page.
