Four teenage athletes from the Apple Valley Gun Club took home a second-place trophy from this year's Scholastic Action Shooting national championship in the Rimfire Optic division.
In this competition, participants use a semi-automatic .22 pistol with a red dot optic to shoot steel targets at set distances. They are scored on both accuracy and speed.
The High Desert shooters was the only team to represent California at the Ohio competition. Coach Ryan Gunn says he wasn't expecting the team to do so well, given there were 2,800 registered competitors, and some rimfire optic teams had more than 10 shooters to the Apple Valley team's four.
He told the Daily Press that he and ***** istant coach Jake Morrison are proud of how each High Desert shooter did.
"They competed against shooters with world record ***** les," Gunn said. "Our team did an impressive job keeping up. We had a great time out there."

Last season was a rough one for the Indiana State football team's defense allowing an FCS worst 497.8 yards a game, but a new defensive coordinator and charged up players are ready to change that.
ISU coach Curt Mallory said he thinks the defense is really flying around out there. He noted how the defense does everything together from working to celebrating.
"I'm really pleased with coach Morrison and the job he's doing," Mallory said. "I've known Steve for a long time as a player, always wanted to work with him, he's done a tremendous job for us."
With the rough stat last season, Mallory said the game is the most important. That first game will see the Sycamores host Southeast Missouri State on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received a few minor injury updates on the opening day of training camp, though head coach Todd Bowles doesn't expect any of the issues to become long-term concerns.
According to Greg Auman, Bowles revealed that left tackle Tristan Wirfs tweaked his hamstring during Tuesday's conditioning test and will miss some time while he recovers.
The All-Pro tackle is considered day-to-day.

COLORADO CITY, Colo. (AP) — The families of two men who discovered through DNA tests that they were switched at birth 38 years ago are accusing a North Dakota hospital of robbing them of the lives they were supposed to lead.
Kyle Bylin discovered his birth family after taking an at-home test he chose randomly during a Christmas gift-exchange. That led to his biological aunt on a genealogy platform. Her nephew, Jeremy Morrison, then had his DNA tested. The results were irrefutable.
"That's when my mind was just completely blown," Bylin said. "We could have never imagined that it was an actual birth switch that occurred."
Morrison said he was convinced as soon as he saw a photo of Bylin's brother and realized they looked very much alike.
Bylin and Morrison were the only babies born on Jan. 26, 1988, at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, according to their lawsuit filed in state court last week. Somehow, they went home with the wrong parents.

Texas A&M is becoming a true destination for top volleyball athletes. The program is not yet considered a traditional blue blood, but head coach Jamie Morrison, now working under a new contract, is pushing the Aggies toward that level. Winning championships is one way to climb into that tier, and the Aggies have already done that. Glenavon say they have agreed to "move forward amicably" with the Northern Ireland Football League [NIFL] after meeting with CEO Gerard Lawlor.
In June, NIFL said it was "working closely" with Crusaders after the Seaview club were placed under a transfer embargo by the Irish FA over a breach of regulations.
Michael O'Connor's side were relegated to the Championship after finishing bottom of the Irish Premiership, eight points and one place below Crusaders.
In response to Crusaders' embargo, Glenavon said they had appealed to NIFL and the Irish FA "to seek further clarification from them regarding the circumstances surrounding the transfer embargo imposed on Crusaders".
On Friday, the Lurgan Blues said that co-chairperson Lawrence Looney and vice-chair Cathal Morrison met with NIFL chief executive Lawlor for "open, honest and confidential discussions" over the matter.

An 11-hit offensive attack — led by Briar Goda's homer, three hits and two RBIs — helped Terre Haute's Wayne Newton Post 346 beat the host Post 218 team 11-5 in Sunday's championship game of the Washington, Missouri American Legion baseball tournament.
Goda also scored twice, as did teammates Ian Samm, Linden Jenkins and Parker Higham.
Terre Haute wasted no time in building a decisive lead. Post 346 scored six runs in the top of the first inning, more than enough to secure the win.
Post 346 now carries an 18-0 record into the Danville, Illinois tournament, which runs Friday through Sunday.
In Sunday's Missouri finale, Terre Haute also got a home run and a single from Noah Fields. Jenkins drove in two runs with a double and a single. Derek Morrison tripled.

What happened: Bitcoin (BTC-USD) dropped more than 3% on Tuesday to hover above $62,400 per token.
What's behind the move: The world's largest cryptocurrency sank alongside the overall market as tech stocks fell. Bitcoin's trajectory this week has mostly followed the major averages, particularly the tech sector.
"We think Bitcoin's renewed sell-off reflects a combination of: (i) a hawkish shift in the Fed outlook; (ii) record institutional ETF outflows and thinning liquidity," Deutsche Bank strategist Marion Laboure wrote in a note on Tuesday.
The token turned lower "as investors seem keen to cut their risk exposure all round," noted David Morrison, senior market ******* yst at Trade Nation.
"As things stand, it looks vulnerable to further weakness should investors continue to reduce their equity holdings," he added.

DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Court of Appeals on Tuesday threw out the conviction of a man who was found guilty of a secondary role in a plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.
Joe Morrison was convicted of providing material support for an act of terrorism and other charges. In a 3-0 ruling, the appeals court reversed the results on technical grounds, saying kidnapping is not an underlying violent felony that can support a conviction under Michigan's terrorism law.
Morrison, 32, has been in prison since 2022. He was given a minimum sentence of 10 years for three crimes, but the length was subsequently reduced to six years.
State Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, was livid about the appeals court decision, calling it "completely and irredeemably nonsensical, outrageous and irresponsible," and promised to take the case to the Michigan Supreme Court.
Morrison, Pete Musico and Paul Bellar were not charged with having a direct role in the plot to kidnap Whitmer. But they were members of a paramilitary group that trained with Adam Fox, a key figure who is serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of conspiracy in federal court.

Clemson football added another big piece to its 2027 recruiting class this weekend with four-star offensive lineman Luke Starcevic announcing his commitment to the Tigers.
The Kindred, North Dakota standout picked Clemson over a strong group of programs that included Notre Dame, Kansas State, and Oklahoma, giving Matt Luke and the Tigers another win on the recruiting trail. Starcevic was on campus for the big official visit weekend, and Clemson made the most of the opportunity.
Things moved quickly between Starcevic and the Tigers over the past few weeks. Clemson extended an offer during his unofficial visit in early May, and the relationship continued to build from there. By the end of the weekend, the Tigers had done enough to lock in another major addition to the class.
At 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, Starcevic brings size, athleticism, and plenty of upside to Clemson’s offensive line group. While some schools recruited him as a tight end during the process, Clemson saw him as an offensive lineman from the start. He projects as a tackle at the next level and gives the Tigers another promising piece up front.
