Another chapter has opened in the 'Julian Alvarez case'.
Following the public exchange between Atleti CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Barcelona vice president Rafa Yuste after the Champions League draw, Los Colchoneros manager Diego Simeone faced the media today ahead of their match against Sevilla.
The coach once again gave his view on the summer's biggest transfer saga, involving Alvarez, Barcelona, and Atletico.
Speaking to the media, Simeone confirmed that Alvarez will miss the match after sitting out the last three training sessions, but he remained optimistic when asked whether the striker's situation could eventually be turned around at the Metropolitano.
"I understand that all the questions are going to be about what is happening with Julian. The club was very firm and clear in what it explained," Simeone explained, as quoted by SPORT.

Sale (13-9) did not walk a batter. The left-hander posted his fourth double-digit strikeout game this season and the 95th of his career, which ranks seventh all-time.
Fans in the sellout crowd of 39,650 cheered when Sale strolled out to the mound for the ninth inning even though relievers were ready in the Atlanta bullpen. Braves manager Walt Weiss stuck with his ace after Freddie Freeman singled leading off the ninth.
Teoscar Hernández popped out, pinch-runner Alek Thomas was out at second on Miguel Rojas' fielder's-choice grounder and Sale struck out Alex Call for his 17th complete game and first since 2019 with Boston.
Baldwin lined the first pitch from Yamamoto (12-8) into the right-field Chop House restaurant. It was Baldwin's fourth leadoff shot this season and 22nd homer overall. Yamamoto allowed only four hits with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Arsenal target Julian Alvarez will "never, ever" be sold to Barcelona, according to Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who did not rule out the possibility of the Argentina international joining another club instead before the transfer deadline.
Alvarez made it clear earlier this summer that he wanted to join Barcelona but relations between the Spanish clubs have completely broken down over the transfer saga, with Gil Marin accusing Barcelona of "dishonesty" and a lack of "professionalism".
Barcelona's president Joan Laporta said on Wednesday that they were still interested in Alvarez despite Atletico's stance, with Atletico then releasing a statement to confirm there was "zero per cent chance" of Alvarez moving to Camp Nou.

The White Sox got steamrolled, 11-2, by a team that entered the game worse than .500. The pitching was terrible, the bats were ice-cold, and the Rangers took advantage of the long ball on several occasions.
José Urquidy did not have a great start, tossing 39 pitches in his first frame. He walked the leadoff batter and the third batter, then hit Brandon Nimmo with a pitch to load the bases with only one out. Ezequiel Duran grounded into a force out at second, but sent Joc Pederson home. Evan Carter doubled, putting the second run on the board. With two outs, Jake Burger picked up a walk, but a pop-up from Elias Díaz would finally stop the damage. Miguel Vargas singled with two outs, and Andrew Benintendi nearly tied the game and would have with just a bit more wind, but Nimmo jumped up to rob the good guys of any runs.
With two outs in the top of the second, Corey Seager singled and was safe at second after Colson Montgomery scooped up a single from Wyatt Langford. Drew Romo blew through the first challenge as Nimmo picked up a walk to load the bases, with Urquidy already passing the 50-pitch mark. Chase Meidroth slipped, unable to grab what should've been an easy out, and another run came in on an infield single from Duran. Pederson, after not getting his challenge call in on time on a strikeout, continued to throw a tantrum, leading to his ejection. Romo ended additional on-field drama by tagging home for the inning-ending force-out. Braden Montgomery singled for the Good Guys, and with two outs, Tristan Peters took a slider and made the Rangers pay, cutting the deficit to 3-2. With one out in the top of the third, Elias Díaz was hit by a pitch, and Cody Freeman singled. Seager caused more damage with a two-run double, giving the Rangers a 5-2 lead with two outs. The frame ended with a pop fly, but also on 93 pitches for Urquidy. The the bottom half Munetaka Murakami singled and Miguel Vargas walked to put two on base early. Benintendi grounded into a fielder's choice, and Braden Montgomery picked up a walk to load the bases. Of course, the next two batters struck out to strand all three runners.

Chivas goal scoring finally appeared in the Apertura 2026 when they defeated Tijuana by a 5-2 score. Chivas finally scored more than one goal in a Liga MX game during the season after they were able to convert their chances days after the news came that their top goal scorer, Armando Gonzalez, was transferred to Olympiakos in Greece. Tijuana came into the match tied in first place but they had a poor defensive display that Chivas took advantage of. Chivas will now travel south to face off against Pachuca while Tijuana returns home where they will host Pumas.
The 1st half started with a two hour and thirteen minutes rain delay. While the stadium crew did a huge effort to get the field in playable conditions, the field was drenched in a lot of areas. A good combination play ended with Efrain Alvarez getting the ball in the area but his left footed shot went wide. A left footed shot from outside the area by Santiago Sandoval was easily saved by Tijuana's goalkeeper, Jose Rodriguez. A back pass was badly fumbled by Rodriguez and left there for Ricardo Marin, who incredibly kicked the ball straight to Rodriguez in a terrible miss. Off a corner kick, the cross into the area was headed back by Luis Romo into the path of Santiago Sandoval, who headed the ball from close range past Rodriguez to score and give Chivas the early 1-0 lead. It was a deserved goal as Chivas had been the better team. Tijuana would try to answer back with a counter in which Ramiro Arciga got off a header that would be cleared off the line by Romo. Off another corner kick, the cross into the area was headed back by Diego Campillo into the path of Ricardo Marin, who headed the ball from close range past Rodriguez to score and increased the lead to 2-0. It was the same play that Tijuana failed to defend and from set pieces, Chivas had a two goal lead. A cross into the area was headed by Diego Abreu but his teammate, Ignacio Rivera would get in between the path of his shot and deflected it wide. After a thru pass would allow Hugo Camberos to get into the area, he would be brought down by Arciga and the referee would give a Penalty Kick to Chivas. Ricardo Marin took the PK and calmly placed his left footed shot past Rodriguez to score and increased Chivas' lead to 3-0. The halftime whistle blew and Chivas had a solid lead after having their best half played so far in the Apertura 2026.
The 2nd half started with Tijuana subbing out Pablo Ortiz, Diego Abreu and Ignacio Rivero for Alan Vega, Elias Manoel and Yael Padilla. Seconds after the start of the half, Chivas lost the ball and allowed Ivan Tona to get to the area but his left footed shot was blocked by Chivas' goalkeeper, Raul Rangel. Rafael Fernandez got off a right footed shot from outside the area that went wide. Chivas subbed out Efrain Alvarez and Miguel Gomez for Brian Gutierrez and Luis Rey. One of those former taxi squad members, Santiago Espinal, has found a new home within the NL West. Espinal signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, as per an announcement from the Triple-A Reno Aces via X.
It's been a chaotic 2026 season for Espinal, who initially latched onto a minor league deal with the Dodgers and eventually made the opening day roster. He played in 36 games with the big league squad, slashing .268/.276/.375 with a home run and seven RBI across 60 plate appearances. He was released by the Dodgers on June 18 before signing a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers on July 2, only to once again be released 26 days later. Espinal slashed .262/.333/.310 with six RBI with the Triple-A Round Rock Express.
Right now the biggest talking point for the Dodgers outside of Shohei Ohtani's battle for MVP is the turbulent, lackluster first year of the Kyle Tucker experience. Canadian cannabis firm Aurora fired back at Curaleaf on Wednesday, a day after Curaleaf went public with its $4 per share hostile bid.
In what should come as no surprise to anyone who's watched these hostile bids play out before, Aurora urged its shareholders to take no action. But things got snippier from there.
"We believe Curaleaf made a strategic decision to make its offer public to pressure our shareholders into making a short-term decision for the benefit of Curaleaf shareholders," Aurora CEO Miguel Martin said. "We will not do that."

The White Sox are looking to rebound on the North Side after a heartbreaking, walk-off loss to the Cubs in extra innings Monday. With a chance to even the series tonight, they are turning to a (fairly) exhausted bullpen to handle Tuesday's game, with lefthander Bryan Hudson getting the ball first for the seventh time this season.
Hudson has been excellent as an opener when called upon, holding a 1.29 ERA across seven frames while allowing just one run on three hits and five strikeouts — with a solo homer serving as the only major blemish in those outings. Hudson has amassed a 3.14 ERA in 51 2/3 innings, alongside a 1.277 WHIP, and has given up just two home runs all season in 54 games. He tends to thrive more in low- to medium-leverage situations and has the lowest ERA (0.34) with the bases empty (26 2/3 innings), making the lefty the perfect candidate for an opener.
Without any corresponding roster moves from the Good Guys, it seems that the White Sox will roll with either Erick Fedde or José Urquidy as the long reliever options, likely hoping to get deep enough in the game — with a lead, ideally — to turn to Sean Newcomb, Huascar Brazobán, and Grant Taylor, maybe even in that order.
Since the Cubs will have a righty on the mound with Kevin Gausman making the start, the lineup looks much more solid from the South Siders tonight, especially with Colson Montgomery returning to the batting order, hitting sixth and playing shortstop. With the right-handed matchup, Sam Antonacci will slot back into leadoff, followed by Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas, and our clutch king, Andrew Benintendi. Tonight would be the perfect night for the Mune and Miguel combo to blast off with a pair of homers, but I'll take anyone stepping up to be the hero if it means we don't have to witness the Sox lose the way they did yesterday.

The Atletico Madrid forward is set to miss Wednesday's La Liga opener against Malaga after agitating for a move away in recent months.
Barcelona registered their interest in the Argentina international while he was at the FIFA World Cup and ****** nal are also said to be interested in him as they are in the market for a top-class left-sided attacker.
Earlier this summer, Atleti CEO Miguel Angel Gil insisted the club did not want to sell Alvarez and would not even consider a £170 million offer.

The Crosstown Classic started with a soul-crushing extra-inning heartbreak for the White Sox with a Cubs walk-off. Despite the game staying close and competitive, poor challenges and sloppy defense doomed the South Siders. The Sox fell 7-5 in the opener.
The game got off to an ugly start after the White Sox went down in order and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki answered with back-to-back homers. With two outs, the Cubs threatened again with back-to-back singles, but Pedro Ramírez sent a ball right to Brenton Doyle, ending the first.
After wasting an ABS challenge to start the third, Sam Antonacci reached anyway when he was plunked. But that wouldn't yield any good results, as Shōta Imanaga shut down the next three White Sox batters. Luis Castillo seemed to have settled in by the bottom of the third, and the guys behind him helped strand the only baserunner in the frame.
The first hit for the White Sox came in the fourth via Miguel Vargas, right after a walk to Munetaka Murakami. Then, with one swing of the bat, Randal Grichuk gave the Good Guys the lead with a three-run homer.

While there are plenty of superstars and big-money players on this team, the World Series hero last year wasn't one of those players. Instead, Miguel Rojas was the hero in Game 7. After the 2026 season, though, Rojas planned to retire.
However, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Rojas is reconsidering his retirement plans and is possibly coming back for one more season.
"Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas says he's thinking about changing his mind about retiring, and that it's possible he'll stick around for another year before he goes into a hybrid coaching/front office role," Nightengale reports.

"It's been a wild ride," Rojas said to Dodgers Nation's Doug McKain after the Dodgers clinched the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies last October. "I've given it everything that I have every single night for the four years that I've been here. And hopefully I can finish my career here next year. Because I'm going to retire after next year."
The Dodgers did bring him back for another year, signing him to a one-year deal early in the offseason and offering him a player development role with the team after he retires.

Rojas, 37, played hero for the Dodgers in Game 7 of the 2025 World Series with a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, forcing the game to extras. Los Angeles won it in the 10th inning, the team's second consecutive championship.
"No one expected Miguel Rojas to hit that home run," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says. "No one."
Said third baseman Max Muncy: "(Rojas) is one of the best teammates I ever had, and just one of the best people in baseball."

Celtic have been handed a significant opening in the pursuit of a Hibernian midfielder, Miguel Chaiwa, with the player's representative claiming that a £3m fee could be enough to complete the transfer.
According to CeltsAreHere, agent Boudjemai Youcef believes his client can leave Hibs for £3m, despite reports that the Edinburgh club value him above that figure. The midfielder remains keen on a switch to Celtic, while the Glasgow club's next move depends on how its midfield recruitment develops.
That distinction matters. The £3m figure comes from the player's camp, rather than confirmation that Hibs have accepted it. The Scottish Sun reported today that Hibs continue to seek more than £4m for the 22-year-old, who remains under contract until 2028. So, for now, supporters should treat the £3m claim as a negotiating position rather than a settled transfer price.

A £3m deal would make sense for Celtic, provided the club view the midfielder as more than a squad body. He played 28 Scottish Premiership matches for Hibs in 2025/26, started 22 and scored once, according to Opta. Those numbers don't scream attacking midfielder, but they do show a young player who became a regular presence in a demanding league.

In an interview, he defended his hostile $4 per share bid for Aurora Cannabis, said the rejection wasn't based on "legit reasons," and explained why he wants the only EU-GMP certified indoor cultivation in Canada.

Jordan said he first spoke with Aurora CEO Miguel Martin at the end of June. Martin wasn't opposed to talking, Jordan said, but told him he would weigh any deal against his fiduciary responsibility. On June 23, Curaleaf sent a formal indication of interest, offering a mutual non-disclosure agreement and 30 days of exclusive reciprocal due diligence. That letter, which Curaleaf later published on its website, confirms this part of Jordan's account. A follow-up call went nowhere, Jordan says.
"This isn't actionable enough," he recalled Martin saying. "I need to go to the board."

The wins are rare and not so easily attained for the Dodgers at this specific moment in the season. And hosting the Royals, it took all that this team had to outlast the opposition in a 6-5 victory in a back-and-forth matchup with multiple lead changes, ultimately decided on a Freddie Freeman RBI single.
Allowing a run in the first, Tarik Skubal didn't deliver a lights-out performance, but how a pitcher handles outings with some form of adversity can often be the true measure of him. The Royals were relatively lucky to get on the board early on with a softly hit single from Nick Loftin that found the right spot—followed by an RBI knock from Jac Caglianone on a groundball that should've found a Dodger glove but didn't, as Miguel Rojas and Mookie Betts didn't react well enough to make a play. Those two singles were enough for the run because once Bobby Witt Jr. replaced Loftin on the basepaths after a forceout, he showed off his speed by swiftly stealing second, his AL-leading 32nd SB.
It would not be the only time Caglianone would hurt Skubal, as a couple of innings later, he would hit a two-run shot on a hanging slider to hand the Royals a 3-0 lead. What was particular about that at-bat was the unpredictable attack plan of Skubal versus Caglianone, with the slider being the fifth different pitch he threw to Caglianone. The problem is that unpredictability can only do so much if hangers are coming to the plate.
Laboring a bit more than he is used to per inning, Skubal established a very high pitch count in the first few frames, allowing him to just complete five, not before getting the final laugh on Caglianone, though. Caglianone came up to the plate with two on and two out in the fifth with the chance to do the most damage in this one. Skubal gave him a recipe of nothing but heaters that laid the groundwork for a strike three swinging on a changeup down and in, a dangerous pitch to throw to the tall lefty, but one that worked out.
Chasing the game from the start, the Dodgers didn't spend a lot of time trailing by those three runs, answering the Royals' two-run third with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. The lefties provided the big hits against Noah Cameron as a Shohei Ohtani RBI double was followed by a Freddie Freeman single to make it 3-2.

The Milwaukee Brewers — fresh off a solid 5-2 homestand to push them to 74-44 on the season — are headed back to the West Coast after visiting the Giants and Angels last week. This time, they'll face two slightly more formidable opponents in the Padres and Dodgers. First up is San Diego, currently in a fight for an NL Wild Card spot alongside the Phillies and D-backs (among several others). At 62-57, the Padres have turned things on in recent weeks to put themselves firmly into the playoff race.
The Brewers have lost several position players in recent days, as shortstop Cooper Pratt hit the IL on Sunday with a hamstring strain and Joey Ortiz is considered day-to-day with neck tightness. The team also lost prospect Jett Williams, who, in his first at-bat back from injury, re-injured his hand while swinging. Outfielder Sal Frelick is also out, though he's on his way back as he began a rehab ***** ignment over the weekend. Pitchers Joel Kuhnel (on rehab), JoJo Romero (mid- to late August), Rob Zastryzny (TBD), Brandon Woodruff (out for season), Brian Fitzpatrick (out for season), Quinn Priester (out for season), and Angel Zerpa (out for season) are all on the IL.
San Diego's injured list currently includes pitchers Joe Musgrove (on rehab), Nick Pivetta (exited rehab outing last week), David Morgan (on rehab), Jason Adam (late August or early September), Lucas Giolito (late August), Bryan Hoeing (out for season), and Yu Darvish (considering retirement). Outfielders Ramón Laureano (likely out for season) and Samad Taylor (close to a rehab ***** ignment) are also out, as well as utility man Miguel Andujar (late August).
Jake Bauers leads Milwaukee with 21 homers, though Jackson Chourio's four-homer week has him closing in with 21 on the season. Brice Turang, William Contreras, Garrett Mitchell, Andrew Vaughn, Christian Yelich, Ortiz, Luis Lara, and David Hamilton round out the regulars, with Brandon Lockridge, Gary Sánchez, and new addition Jihwan Bae serving as depth. Despite an ice-cold start offensively, the Padres have turned it around a bit offensively in recent weeks. Manny Machado, who's hitting just .212 for the year, leads the team with 23 homers, good for a .420 slugging percentage. He's followed by Jackson Merrill (18 homers), Ty France (16 homers), Gavin Sheets (15 homers), and Fernando Tatis Jr. (11 homers). Xander Bogaerts, Luis Campusano, Freddy Fermin, Jake Cronenworth, recent former Brewer Luis Rengifo round out the regulars, with Austin Hays, Jase Bowen, and Sung-Mun Song, providing depth. As a team, the Padres are hitting .236/.313/.382 (.695 OPS ranks 25th), with 124 homers (20th), 497 runs (22nd), and 119 steals (third).

Baseball feels more organic when Nancy Faust is in a booth with an organ. Her presence in the ballpark this afternoon, which precluded the usual barrage of pop songs, crowd-stimulating noises, and things that my dad would refer to as "canned bullshit," set the tone for what turned out to be an improbably fun day at the ballpark as the White Sox staked themselves a season-high four-game lead in the AL Central with a 5-2 win over the Guardians.
This is a Sox team that has made its hay with youthful energy. But even without the thumping bass that typically blasts from Rate Field's PA system, the action on the field and the feeling in the stands was as vibrant as ever. When it appeared that Cleveland would put a damper on the 30,000 strong crowd's supportive push with three straight hits and two runs against Davis Martin to open the game, the Sox responded with three consecutive hits of their own to start their part of the action.
The Sox only managed to get one run out of their hit parade, though. For a moment, when Guardians starter Joey Cantillo punched out three consecutive hitters to escape the early jam, it seemed as if the building momentum had been stifled.
Then the tarps came out.
One two-hour rain delay later, it felt like it didn't matter. When Tim Herrin took the ball for Cleveland in relief of Cantillo, it was a whole new ballgame. Herrin did his job, but his successor Craig Yoho couldn't. For the second straight day, the Guardians had grabbed themselves a 2-0 lead before falling victim to a big crooked number from the South Siders. After taking an inning to warm up, Miguel Vargas, Randal Grichuk and Braden Montgomery all reached base in succession with two outs before the other Montgomery broke things open with one swing of the bat.

Nats first round pick Chris Hacopian will be making his minor league debut tomorrow. Interestingly, it will not be in Fredericksburg. Instead, the local kid will be skipping over Low-A and will join the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The old regime would always send draft picks to Low-A first, even if it were only for a few games, but that has changed.
After being drafted 11th overall last month, it will be exciting to see Hacopian get started. That Wilmington team was already loaded, and now they are getting another top prospect. The likes of Eli Willits, Ronny Cruz and Miguel Sime Jr. are some of the players currently in Wilmington. Now, Paul Toboni's first draft pick will join them.
This ***** ignment is interesting for a couple reasons. First is that it is another change from the new regime. Even when Dylan Crews was drafted second overall, he played 14 games in Fredericksburg. After that, he skipped High-A and went to Harrisburg. Playing for the Fred Nats was like a rite of passage for Nationals prospects.
Wilmington is known as a bad place to hit, and the old regime was hyper-aware of that. The new regime has been more willing to send guys to Wilmington and let them stay there. It is a pitchers park, but if you can hit, you can thrive there. We saw that with the likes of Ethan Petry, Devin Fitz-Gerald and now Eli Willits.
Hacopian will be the next big bat in Wilmington. Toboni and the front office must have felt that the infielders bat was just too advanced for Low-A. There is certainly evidence for that, as Hacopian was seen as one of the best college hitters in the class. He has walked more than he has struck out wherever he has played. Now, he will take on Wilmington.

Jose Mourinho has been backed well by the board in the ongoing summer transfer window with the administration doing everything in their power to bring the players he demands home.
In that sense, the manager now has a revamped defence and a far more potent attack compared to last season, and virtually has no excuses to underperform in the upcoming season.
Two positions that he requested signings in, however, could not be completed by the board – the defensive midfield and that of a second starting-quality centre-back. While word has it that Real Madrid will not make any more signings, the manager is still pushing for the recruitments.
According to a recent update by reporter Miguel Serrano, Mourinho is insisting on Real Madrid signing a new left-footed centre-back this summer. He has already signed Ibrahima Konate for the defence but wants a second addition in the department.
