Amal Clooney once again turned to Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann for her appearance at the "Ink" premiere and the opening red carpet at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on Wednesday.

Accompanied by her husband of nearly 12 years, George Clooney, the British-Lebanese human rights attorney wore a sleek black gown from the luxury label that eschewed elements of Old Hollywood style in favor of a modern sculpted silhouette.

George chose a classic Giorgio Armani tuxedo for his big night, while Amal delivered something I certainly wasn't expecting.
One thing I did not have on my bingo card for this festival was Amal in a black dress. She is the queen of summery colour in Venice, so I was surprised to see her take to the red carpet in this custom Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann gown. Perhaps we should have taken the hint when she arrived in olive green earlier today.
Of course, this black gown is far from plain. The fitted silhouette features razor-sharp pleating, transparent georgette side panels and a geometric leather neckline, giving us plenty to take in despite the monochrome palette.

The 2026 Venice Film Festival starts on Wednesday, and the first wave of celebrities has already begun arriving at the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido. With 11 days of premieres, photocalls and parties ahead of us, consider this the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a very busy fashion week.

Amal Clooney was among the first to arrive alongside George Clooney, who will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during Wednesday's opening ceremony.
Considering Amal and Venice have given us some memorable fashion moments over the years, I'm excited to see what she has in store for us this time around.
Amal usually gives us summer hues during a festival that sits right at the tail end of the season, but on this rare occasion she opted for a darker palette in Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann Spring 2027.

Sometimes the most memorable part of an outfit is hidden underneath. Designers have increasingly used contrasting linings to introduce unexpected flashes of color, transforming capes, coats, gowns and dramatic trains whenever they move. From Cate Blanchett to Anne Hathaway, several stars have demonstrated how a carefully chosen interior shade can turn an elegant red carpet look into something far more surprising.
Cate Blanchett delivered a memorable example at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Apprentice. Her custom Haider Ackermann for Jean Paul Gaultier strapless creation appeared predominantly black from the front, but revealed contrasting shades from other angles. A blush pink back and emerald green lining emerged as Blanchett lifted the train, giving the sophisticated design an unexpected injection of color.
Brie Larson used the same idea for superhero glamour at the London premiere of Captain Marvel. Her vivid blue Valentino gown featured an off the shoulder neckline, sculpted bodice and flowing cape. Hidden inside that cape was a shimmering gold lining, creating a dramatic metallic flash whenever the fabric moved. Nicole Kidman took a bolder approach at the New York premiere of Expats, where her sleek black Versace gown revealed a vivid lime green interior through its dramatic thigh high slit.
Helen Mirren offered a softer interpretation at the 2024 Golden Globes. Wearing Dolce & Gabbana, she paired an elegant lavender gown with a matching coat featuring voluminous sleeves. The coat's pink interior became visible as it opened, introducing another pastel shade while maintaining the sophistication of the overall look. Instead of competing with the lavender exterior, the contrasting lining gave the ensemble additional depth.
Anne Hathaway also embraced the technique with a playful maternity look at the Los Angeles premiere of The Last Thing He Wanted. Her custom Prabal Gurung ensemble centered on a blue satin high low top with a striking red interior. Paired with relaxed jeans and pointed red shoes, the contrasting colors framed her silhouette while bringing an unconventional energy to maternity dressing.

England stars Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have been pulled out of their ongoing County Championship matches after a request from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), a move that has fuelled speculation that both players could return for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge next week.

Neither Stokes nor Atkinson played in the second Test after they breached the team curfew while celebrating England's victory in the series opener at Lord's.

With stand-in captain Joe Root leading an inexperienced side, England struggled against New Zealand at The Oval and faced a difficult final day.

Before being withdrawn, both players had impressed for their counties.

Stokes turned out for Durham against Northamptonshire and bowled 25 overs on Friday before smashing 95 runs in an entertaining knock on Saturday. National selector Marcus North was among those watching his performance.

Atkinson also made his presence felt for Surrey against Glamorgan, claiming four wickets for 61 runs.

Following the ECB's request, Stokes was replaced by Colin Ackermann in Durham's playing XI, while Tom Lawes came in for Atkinson at Surrey.
Although England head coach Brendon McCullum had earlier voiced concerns over Stokes's mindset, Durham coach Ryan Campbell offered a different view.

"All I have seen is the same old Ben Stokes who loves being the Durham dressing room, who loves being around a cricket ground and who hasn’t missed a beat," he added.

According to reports in the English media, the ECB is still investigating the pair's breach of curfew, and no decision has been announced yet.

Likewise, England's squad for the third Test has not been confirmed. Any update on the matter is expected only after the conclusion of the second Test at The Oval.

Meanwhile, England suffered a crushing 253-run defeat to New Zealand at The Oval, squandering the momentum from their Lord's victory as the series was levelled 1-1 ahead of the decisive third Test in Nottingham.
