Last night was a tightly contested pitching duel that saw the Yankees build an early lead and then survive a late White Sox rally. New York scored all three of its runs in the second inning against White Sox starter Anthony Kay. The rally began when Jasson Domínguez singled and Trent Grisham followed with a hit. Anthony Volpe then drilled an RBI double to deep center field, scoring Domínguez. Two batters later, Max Schuemann delivered the biggest hit of the game, a two-run double that plated both Grisham and Volpe for a 3-0 Yankees lead. The story for most of the evening, though, was Gerrit Cole, who looked dominant in his sixth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Cole worked six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and walking two. Chicago struggled to generate offense until the ninth inning. Yankees closer David Bednar entered looking for his 22nd save, but Braden Montgomery singled and Chase Meidroth followed with a dramatic two-run homer to left field, trimming the deficit to 3-2. Bednar regrouped, however, striking out former Yankee Everson Pereira to end the game and secure the save.
The Yankees have now won five of their last six games and are within 1½ games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East, while the White Sox remain atop the AL Central despite dropping four of their last five.
It seemed like the Sox were facing the ace of the Yankees' staff last night but tonight Chicago must face New York's current ace, Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2-07 ERA). His most recent start came on July 24 against the Phillies. He threw 7.1 shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out 12. The White Sox will send Davis Martin (9-5, 3.49 ERA) to the **** p. The right-hander has had a breakthrough season but has been inconsistent of late allowing 12 earned runs over his last 18 innings.

The New York Yankees' offense is missing some key bats right now, but their starting rotation is still one of the best in baseball.
Cam Schlittler, Max Fried and Gerrit Cole are an elite trio to have in a rotation. Carlos Rodón will return soon as well, but the Yankees may be interested in making the group even better. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Detroit Tigers are "super close" to making Tarik Skubal available, and MLB insider Jim Bowden has been told the Yankees would pursue him.
"If the Tigers were to trade Tarik Skubal, (the Yankees) will play there," Bowden said on the Foul Territory Network.
A rotation featuring Skubal, Schlittler, Fried and Cole would be a nightmare for any team in a postseason series. Pair that with a healthy offense that has Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, and the Yankees are favorites in the American League.

It's been a bit of a janky week for Yankee baseball, with a pair of rain-induced doubleheaders and a scheduled offday in the past six. We return to what is hopefully normal programming today, with the Bombers coming into Philadelphia for a three-game set against the second-place Phillies.
It's Cam ****** p Day, as the ace Cam Schlittler looks to pull himself over the 4.0 fWAR mark if he can really strut on the Phils tonight. I've remarked a number of times this year how Cam will variate between "real good" and "meh" starts this year, with a handful of dominant performances and only one real stinker in the mix. His last outing was certainly in the "meh" column, as the Dodgers were able to chase him before the end of the fifth last Sunday.
I need to do the math on this, but it feels like because Cam throws so many pitches in the zone, he's most vulnerable against teams that make contact and offer at pitches in-zone. The Phillies boast the sixth-highest strikeout rate in baseball and the 10th-highest Z-Swing percentage, along with the 16th-best Z-Contact rate. To me that sounds like this should be a good matchup for Schlittler's game plan, but Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper are still who they are.
Jesús Luzardo, who is still just 28 despite me feeling like I've heard his name for 15 years, goes for Philly. After a five-win season of his own last year, he's returned that pace and then some in 2026, making the All-Star team with a 3.43 ERA and 2.90 FIP, led by a sparkling ability to keep the ball in the park. The Yankees have managed to induce some immediate regression in other homer-suppressing pitchers this year, if they can manage that tonight they'll set themselves up well for a win.

This week’s All-Star Week festivities got off to a bombastic start on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, with outstanding performances from established sluggers and burgeoning stars alike in the Home Run Derby. The spectacle of Jordan Walker silencing a partisan Philadelphia crowd with six consecutive bombs to ****** the ****** le from Kyle Schwarber will be hard to top in terms of pure theatre, but let’s see what the Midsummer Classic itself has to offer!
Tonight, the Yankees will have both Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger representing them in the American League’s starting lineup; they’ll take on Philadelphia ace Cristopher Sánchez on his home mound as the Senior Circuit seeks to claim their second straight victory in the main event. The AL had mounted a late-inning comeback to erase a 6-0 lead, but Schwarber ultimately led the NL to victory by winning a Derby-esque swing-off challenge which replaced extra innings.
Of course, two other Yankees were named All-Stars this season: Aaron Judge and Cam Schlittler. Judge is still working his way back from the rib fracture he sustained in the first week of June. Schlittler was about as deserving as any pitcher to get the starting nod for the AL, but owing to his start this past Saturday, opted not to participate. Strangely, Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who will be leading the American League on the field tonight, said he was always planning to tap the Blue Jays’ Dylan Cease as the starter—even if Schlittler was available to pitch. Weird move, but all right.
Bellinger and Rice will hit consecutively in Schneider’s lineup, at the sixth and seventh spot respectively. (Everybody get those jokes out of the way now.) They were not voted into starting spots, but they will each get the nod regardless due to injuries to Judge and Byron Buxton in Bellinger’s case and the combination of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s withdrawal from the event and replacement Nick Kurtz’s recent addition to the IL.
Rice participated in last night’s Home Run Derby, but failed to advance to the next round. He’ll still get a chance to show off the impressive game power which has brought him to the precipice of 30 home runs at the season’s intermission. Bellinger was slumping mightily ahead of the season’s final week, but finished strong with five hits in the last four games ahead of the break. He gets a chance to keep that momentum going against…well, somebody in the NL’s pitching staff. Since it tends to be a new face pitching every inning, and all. Just one big hit from either of them however, and they could join Derek Jeter (2000), Mariano Rivera (2013), and Giancarlo Stanton (2022) as the only All-Star Game MVPs in Yankees history.

For years, we've come to expect the MLB All-Star Game to feature players who have perennially been among the best in the sport. We become accustomed to seeing the same names fill out the rosters. Guys like Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, Chris Sale, Jose Altuve, Mike Trout, and more. While some of those names are still here in Philadelphia, it feels like we're witnessing a little bit of a changing of the guard, particularly amongst the starting pitchers.
This year's All-Star rosters had 26 first-time players selected, and 14 of the starting pitchers will be making their first or second appearance in the Midsummer Classic. Six of those starting pitchers (plus Paul Skenes, who is making his third appearance) are 26 years old or younger, and all of them, apart from Skenes, have made fewer than 35 career MLB starts. For comparison's sake, Chris Sale, who is also participating in the All-Star Game, has made 329 career starts (even with his litany of injuries).
"I think the game's changing, the game's getting younger," acknowledged Reds' starting pitcher Chase Burns, who is making his first career All-Star appearance. "I know it probably sucks to say that for older guys, but, you know, it's because of them that the game's gotten better."
That deference to the veterans was common amongst the young hurlers who were present at the All-Star game: "It's a good mix of older, veteran guys that we can learn from, and then a lot of hungry guys that are trying to make it back here every year and stay healthy," said Yankees' starter Cam Schlittler, who is also making his first All-Star appearance.
The "hungry" young guys that Schlittler talked about have been making their presence known this season. Among qualified starting pitchers, five of the top 10 starters in WAR are current All-Stars who are 26 years old or younger. Seven of the top 12 qualified starting pitchers in terms of strikeout rate are 26 years old or younger, including the Guardians' Gavin Williams and the Mets' Nolan McLean, who were not selected as All-Stars.

Already facing the massive absence of megastars Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, the league’s midseason showcase set for Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park is grappling with an accelerating run of top pitchers also not competing.
Among the latest developments:
Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler, the current odds leader to win the American League Cy Young Award, will not play in the game after a 99-pitch outing on Saturday against the Nationals. Tuesday would have normally been a side throw day before his next start, allowing a short stint in the All-Star Game. Yankees manager Aaron Boone, however, said Schlittler’s current health will not permit that to happen. “Just feels like, on his recovery day, to go back out there throwing 100 miles an hour is something that he felt a little apprehensive about,” Boone said.
Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, the current odds leader to win the National League Cy Young Award and an all-star last year after just five appearances, was scratched Sunday from his final Brewers start before the break. “It [stinks] to miss a start and the All-Star Game, but I know it’s the right thing to do in this situation,” Misiorowski said. “My arm is a little tired.”

WASHINGTON — Give the Yankees credit for one of the most helter-skelter 3 1/2 months in recent memory. I can’t decide if this team is really a powerhouse or if they’re imposters who’ll break your heart in October (again).

That’s a lot of agita for a meaningless game. I’m starting to like the Home Run Derby a lot more.

The New York Yankees head into the MLB All-Star break with one of the better pitching staffs in Major League Baseball, and it could soon get even stronger. Despite opening the season without Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, and later losing last year’s ace, Max Fried, to the injured list, the Yankees have remained one of baseball’s top teams on the mound. Rodón also returned to the injured list a couple of weeks ago, creating even more uncertainty. Now, however, there is finally some encouraging news.

According to reporter Gary Phillips, manager Aaron Boone said Max Fried’s live batting practice session on Saturday went extremely well. The next step in Fried’s recovery is expected to be a minor league rehab ***** ignment, which Boone indicated could begin as soon as Friday.
That’s a significant development for the Yankees, who have eagerly awaited the return of one of their top starters. If Fried gets through his rehab outing without any setbacks, he could be back in the major league rotation before long.
The update on Carlos Rodón wasn’t quite as advanced, but it was still positive. Boone said Rodón has strung together several productive throwing sessions and is expected to throw almost every day during the All-Star break.

After a big, ninth-inning comeback to beat the Nationals last night, we got a sequel on Saturday afternoon. Starter Cam Schlittler didn’t pitch well while managing an extraordinary start, and seven-plus innings of maddening offense gave way to a trio of eighth-inning home runs. The Yankees have a win streak going, taking today’s game 4-2 over the Nationals.
Cam Schlittler is making me think about Roy Halladay a lot. I’ve told this story before here, but Halladay was the standard of baseball excellence in my home growing up, my dad would hand ten year old me a pocket Blue Jay schedule and have me mark off the home games that Doc was most likely to be starting, and those games became the priority options for family trips to Toronto. The day Roy was traded was a small celebration in our house, because he sure as ******* wasn’t getting anything out of the late-2000s Blue Jays. At least the Phillies gave him a real shot.
But the thing that always stuck out to me about Halladay, specifically his time in Toronto where he was the best or second best pitcher in the AL depending on what Johan Santana had done lately, was he didn’t often dominate lineups the way his counterpart in Minnesota would. Halladay ground you down, taking advantage of his formidable conditioning and his manager’s reluctance to go to anyone in the bullpen to throw 130 cutters and sinkers and shatter your bat and watch you jog 75 feet to your right on a basic groundout to second, and he would do that for eight innings every five days.
Indeed even on days where Halladay wasn’t the best pitcher available, he seemed better than anyone at finding some way to make it work. When he was losing, and boy he was losing a lot with those teams, it seemed there was ******* ody on the planet more dead-set at not being the reason why we lose today.

The Yankees are looking to end their first half on a high note this weekend in Washington, DC, when they face the upstart Nationals. Said Nats have been better than expected in their first full year with a new front office and skipper, which hadn't been changed since their 2019 World Series-winning team fell apart. Ryan Weathers, Cam Schlittler, and Will Warren have a tough lineup facing them this weekend, and Weathers is slated to be the first to get a shot at them tonight. The Nats are sending out lefty Carson Palmquist as an opener with familiar starter Zack Littell likely to follow as the "bulk guy."
However, we'll have to wait a bit. The Nationals announced that there is "inclement weather" in the area and that first pitch—which had been scheduled for 6:45pm ET—was delayed. They put the news out there at 6:07pm ET and as of just a few minutes ago, the tarp was still on the field. ******* mer.

Wednesday's win over the Rays was huge -- not only did it prevent Tampa from clinching the tiebreaker for the AL East crown, the Yankees offense finally woke up from its slumber, scoring 12 runs.
They'll need to keep that momentum going this weekend so they can end the unofficial first half of the season on a good note. Winning the series against an up-and-coming Nationals team will go a long way to alleviating the pain the Yankees were in when they went 5-15 the last few weeks.
It won't be easy, but going into the All-Star break with a few wins over the weekend would go a long way.

The leaders in the American League and specifically the AL East open a four-game series tonight in St. Petersburg when the New York Yankees (49-40) take the field against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays (52-35). Tampa Bay enters the night holding a four-game lead over New York in the East and boasting one of the best home records in baseball at 31-12, while the Yankees arrive looking to halt a difficult stretch that has seen them lose 12 of their last 15 games.
Both clubs are coming off disappointing losses on Sunday. The Yankees were handled 6-1 by the Twins in the Bronx, continuing a rough weekend in which Minnesota scored 17 runs over the final two games of the series. New York has now dropped two straight and has struggled offensively of late, scoring just 41 runs during its recent 15-game slide. Tampa Bay was shut out 2-0 by Houston. Even with Sunday's defeat, the Rays have won nine of their last eleven games.
The marquee attraction tonight is the favorite to win the Cy Young, New York’s Cam Schlittler (8-5, 2.08 ERA). He’ll take the mound opposite converted Rays’ starter Griffin Jax (4-5, 3.45 ERA). Schlittler enters the series leading American League starters in ERA while ranking among the league leaders in strikeouts. Through 104 innings, he owns a sparkling 0.96 WHIP and 123 strikeouts. Schlittler’s last start, however, was less than Cy Young-worthy. It was easily his worst of the season. Against Detroit last week, he was tagged for six runs including four home runs over just four innings in a 9-3 loss. For Tampa Bay, Jax has quietly been a dependable arm despite a 4-5 record. His 3.45 ERA and 1.27 WHIP reflect solid mid-rotation production, although the biggest concern has been the long ball; he has surrendered 11 homers in 60 innings. Oh by the way, the Yankees lead all of baseball with 128 home runs.
The Yankees’ primary issues during this recent but extended run of poor play have been hitting and defense. As noted earlier, they are averaging less than three runs per game over the past three weeks. Couple that with atrocious defense - 20 errors and 29 unearned runs over the last 15 games (most by a Yankees’ team in any 15-game span since 1935) and the result is obvious; they have fallen out of first in the East and are far enough behind Tampa to make this series crucial.
The Difference of late for the Rays has been Junior Caminero who has homered ten times in his last ten games.

Max Fried, on the IL since the middle of May with a bone bruise, is ready to start facing live batters. He threw a bullpen session on Friday, and after getting the go-ahead that everything felt good will throw live batting practice today with a pitch limit of about 35 pitches. He’s still a while away from returning to the big league team, with roughly a month to go in his rehab, but the team is excited with the form he’s displayed and Fried has even taken the time off to work on his mechanics as he was never able to settle in this year despite good overall stats.

-Schlittler had a rocky start. After getting the first two outs quickly, Kerry Carpenter hit a ball deep into right-center field. Spencer Jones timed it perfectly and had the ball in his glove, but the ball dislodged over the wall when he hit the wall to give the Tigers the lead. Riley Greene followed up with a no-doubt 424-foot bomb into the second deck in right field.
Two batters later, Spencer Torkelson took Schlittler deep (405 feet) over the left field wall to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. It took Schlittler 36 pitches to get out of the first inning.
Greene would get Schlittler again in the third, with a two-run shot. Schlittler would pitch into the fifth and, after allowing a leadoff double to Dillon Dingler, manager Aaron Boone pulled his young star.

Drew Rasmussen and Chris Sale gained some ground in the Cy Young market, but can anyone catch Cam Schlittler and Jacob Misiorowski in the second half of the year?
Jacob Misiorowski threw a 105.5 mph heater on the third pitch of the game against the Cubs in his previous start, which is the third-hardest throw since tracking started in 2008. With the All-Star break around the corner, Misiorowski is the overwhelming favorite as he continues to set records in what seems like every start.
In June, Misiorowski has a 0.96 ERA (3rd), 0.64 WHIP (4th), 38 strikeouts (T-4th) and an MLB-leading .128 OBA. He was even better in May with a 0.28 ERA (2nd), .109 OBA (1st), 0.52 WHIP (1st), and 57 strikeouts (1st). **** ody has pitched better since May.
Cristopher Sanchez put a little distance between himself and Misiorowski in his previous start and not in a good way. Against Washington, Sanchez allowed seven hits and five earned runs over 5.0 innings. That was the second-most hits and earned runs allowed this season by Sanchez.

CLEVELAND — After a rough opening to his 2026 season, Guardians starting pitcher Slade Cecconi went back to the lab, and he brought co-scientist and catcher Patrick Bailey with him.
Together, the two might have found the right formula, along with the help of the rest of the Guardians' pitching staff.
Cecconi was knocked around in his first eight starts of the season to the tune of a 6.15 ERA. But since May 9, when the Guardians acquired Bailey via trade? Cecconi has completely turned it around and posted a 2.55 ERA in nine outings. Over that time period, it's the third best ERA among American League starting pitchers. Only New York's Cam Schlittler and Tampa's Drew Rasmussen have been better.
Of course, it isn't quite that simple as to why Cecconi has found his groove, but it's certainly part of the equation. The two have instantly meshed.
"He's really receptive to having conversations between starts and after outings where we both can get on the same page as to how we want to define my identity as a pitcher," Cecconi said after a six-inning gem in the Guardians' win over the Seattle Mariners June 27. "Because that's something I'm still discovering, if that makes sense."

The Yankees are lucky this series is in Boston, because after three pretty gross outings in a row against the Red Sox, they’d almost certainly booed by the Bronx like the hunter who shot Bambi’s mom. They can get a little bit of good vibes back today by managing a single win in this four-game set, though they’ll need to beat arguably the BoSox’s best in order to do it.
Sonny Gray, who I’m sure many of us remember, has been quite effective from a pure run prevention standpoint. He’s top 20 in baseball by ERA albeit with a 70-inning threshold, but what should be noteworthy is how his strikeouts have disappeared. He sat down 26.7 percent of batters faced last year and over 30 percent two years ago, but manages just a 21.1 percent this year. Far more **** in play are available against Gray, and while he’s juiced his ground-ball rate to something we haven’t seen from him this side of COVID-19. If the Yankees can elevate against him, there are runs on the table here.
Meanwhile, Carlos Rodón will once again take the stage for the Yankees. I don’t want to harp on Carlos too much, he’s a fair pitcher who probably isn’t what you’re paying him to be but his wife is an excellent social media follow. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs a start all year. I hate watching him pitch. He is a laborious viewing prospect, seemingly spotting every hitter an extra pitch and being one of the slowest pitchers in baseball in terms of how long he holds the ball for. Cam Schlittler is the second-slowest, but at least he seems to dock a pitch per hitter rather than donate one. I hope Rodón pitches well, but I doubt I’ll enjoy the journey.
We have a bit of a funky lineup today, with Aaron Boone seemingly try to shake the tree and see if a few runs drop out. Against the righty Gray, Jazz Chisholm Jr. will lead us off for the first time all season–first time as a Yankee actually–and traditional lefty platoon hitter Amed Rosario will DH and bat sixth. This means Paul Goldschmidt is the odd man out, with the league’s oldest position player given the day off. Oswaldo Cabrera also gets his first start since the ugly ankle injury that ended his season early in May 2025.
How to watch

The Yankees came into Boston on the heels of a solid series win in Detroit, looking primed to bury their rivals, who entered in last place in the AL East. Instead, things are feeling a little June Swoony, with the Yankees’ offense looking like they miss Aaron Judge over the last week or so. The team’s starting rotation should be able to pick up the offense and keep them in it every night, but Will Warren and Cam Schlittler have faltered the last two nights. Now, it’s up to Gerrit Cole to try to keep this from turning into a three-game losing streak.

BOSTON (AP) — Caleb Durbin broke a tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, Connelly Early allowed two runs over six innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 6-3 on Thursday night.
Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman bounced back after two losses for his 15th save of the season. Nate Eaton and Ceddanne Rafaela each drove in a run for Boston, which beat the Yankees at Fenway Park for the first time this season. New York swept a three-game series at Fenway back in April.
Durbin's homer came off Yankees starter Cam Schlittler (8-4) and came one day after his left pinkie was dislocated against Colorado. The third baseman was in starting lineup and sent a shot into the first row of the Green Monster seats for his fifth homer this month.
Early (7-5) struck out a season-high nine. He allowed five hits and walked two.
Jose Caballero homered for New York.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Schlittler struck out 13 in six overpowering innings for his first double-digit strikeout game in the regular season, and the New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Friday night.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a solo homer and Ben Rice launched a three-run shot in the second against Rhett Lowder (3-4) as the Yankees won for the 10th time in 15 games since losing Aaron Judge to a fractured right rib. Anthony Volpe added a late RBI single.
Schlittler (8-3) notched five strikeouts on his four-seam fastball that averaged 97.9 mph. He had four strikeouts apiece on cutters and sinkers.
The right-hander threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of 23 hitters and eclipsed the 12 strikeouts he had over eight innings in the deciding Game 3 of last year's AL Wild Card Series against rival Boston. At 25 years, 134 days, Schlittler became the youngest Yankees pitcher with 13 strikeouts since Al Downing (22 years, 359 days) also fanned 13 against the Chicago White Sox on June 21, 1964.
Schlittler also became the youngest Yankees pitcher to strike out 13 without issuing a walk. He threw 66 of 96 pitches for strikes and got his 10th strikeout when Eugenio Suárez swung at a 99.1 mph sinker to end the fourth.
