The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), New York City's largest teachers union, is fighting back against Mayor Zohran Mamdani's efforts to block a city-backed pay raise for education paraprofessionals, after the group previously endorsed him last year.
Last month, the New York City Council unanimously passed the "RESPECT Check Act," which would offer up to a $10,000-bonus for education paraprofessionals.
Though Mamdani supported a version of the bill in the past, he has since spoken out against it, arguing that it violates New York state's Taylor Law, which protects public employees' rights to negotiate issues like compensation. His administration later filed a lawsuit to stop the law from being enacted Aug. 19.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., an outspoken critic of Israel, was set to headline a rally in South Florida boosting three progressive Democratic candidates before the Jewish-owned venue hosting the event backed out a day before.
The Chomp the Oligarchy rally to support two U.S. House candidates and one Senate candidate was scheduled for Friday night at The Venue in Fort Lauderdale, just four days before Florida's primary election.
State Rep. Michael Gottlieb, a Democrat, posted Thursday morning calling the event "anti-Jew," while also accusing House candidates Elijah Manley and Oliver Larkin, along with state Rep. Angie Nixon, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, of being part of an "Anti-Israel and Anti-Zionism coalition."
Gottlieb then said Tlaib "has by far the deepest record of antisemitic allegations and is being brought here to help these candidates raise funds for their campaigns."

A lifeguard in Maine said he "started swimming like ****** " when a shark grabbed onto his buoy and pulled him underwater off the coast of Scarborough Beach on Saturday.
Greg Wilfert said he initially thought he was caught in the propeller of a boat.
"'Cause that's the only thing I could think of until I realized there was no boat," he said.
Wilfert said he was pulled about 5 feet underwater before he was able to get free and emerge on shore unharmed.
"It was frightening," he said. "I'm not going to deny that."

As fighting in the Middle East grinds on, the United States has had a steadfast ally in Israel, but support from the American public is plunging. The Iran war, along with Israel's bombardment of Gaza has exposed strains between the U.S. and Israel with President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu occasionally at odds. NBC's Keir Simmons reports in this week's Sunday Focus.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The deadline passed Tuesday for the Trump administration to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its rejection of the president's birthright citizenship restrictions, with no new filing on the docket.
President Donald Trump vowed to seek a rehearing shortly after the opinion handed him a loss on a signature issue, but by Tuesday the 25-day window had elapsed with no new activity.
A petition would face long odds: The court has not agreed to rehear an argued case in more than 50 years.
The high court's 6-3 decision in June struck down Trump's executive order that would have denied automatic citizenship to children born in the United States whose parents are in the U.S. illegally or temporarily.
The Republican president's restrictions on birthright citizenship had been blocked by several lower courts before reaching the justices, and they did not take effect anywhere in the U.S.

The couple who climbed to the top of the Empire State Building spoke out after they appeared in court Thursday. The 32-year-old man said he wanted to do "something special" for their engagement. Both face multiple charges and court records show they likely broke a lock on a security door to access the restricted 104th floor which leads to the antenna they climbed.
