The Federal Reserve is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point at its meeting Wednesday, which would mark the first increase since July 2023, according to CNBC. CME Group's FedWatch tool showed traders placing odds above 90% on a hike, an outcome that would set the federal funds rate target range at 3.75%–4%.
That would follow a period in which the FOMC reduced rates on six separate occasions totaling 175 basis points from July 2023 through early 2026, according to CNBC. Since then, a string of discouraging inflation readings, a firm labor market, and crude oil prices rising back above $100 a barrel — driven by the conflict involving Iran — have shifted the calculus toward tightening.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks at the Fed's annual Jackson Hole symposium helped accelerate that shift, according to CNBC. As recently as a month ago, futures markets put the probability of a hike at only 36%.
The path to Wednesday's expected decision reflects a committee that had been moving in a hawkish direction for months. At the June meeting — Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first — the committee voted 12–0 to hold rates steady, but the Fed released projections showing nine of 18 officials favored at least one rate hike before year-end. Consumer prices had risen 4.2% year-over-year in May, a three-year high. Warsh said at the time that the Fed's commitment to bringing down inflation was "strong, unanimous, and unambiguous."
Minutes from the July meeting, when the committee held rates steady on a fractured 9–3 vote, showed hawkish sentiment extended beyond the three dissenting regional bank presidents who had pushed for an immediate increase. The minutes indicated that "some policy firming would likely be warranted" if inflation remained persistent, driven by factors including AI-fueled demand, Middle East energy disruptions, or tariff pass-through.

Carolla said it "evidently works" when it comes to winning over voters, so Republicans should give it a shot.
"It definitely works on all the poor people," Carolla continued. "We'll just get you free cheese, and free school, and free Medicare, and we'll get you free sh*t. Why don't rich people start bribing people? Why not?"

The 2026 Biltmore Championship, a new PGA Tour event in Asheville, North Carolina, kicks off Thursday. The Presidents Cup is set for next week outside of Chicago, but the first Tour event since the season-ending Tour Championship is up. The Cliffs at Walnut Grove will host the tournament. The layout is a par-71 measuring 7,249 yards.
Being a fall event, the purse is significantly smaller than most events from the regular season. The biggest name initially in the field, Justin Thomas, withdrew Sunday, too, but there are other notables set to take on the Biltmore.

Closer has learned that the famed Hollywood filmmaker, 79, has listed his seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom property for just under $30 million after purchasing the ranch back in 1999 for $5.35 million.
The 6,219-square-foot property was at the center of controversy shortly after he and wife Kate Capshaw made the purchase because the director wanted to build a five-story horse-riding ring despite pushback from their Brentwood neighbors.
"It's just astounding and obnoxious," land-use attorney John Murdock, who represented several residents at the time, told the ***** ociated Press in 2000. "They're cutting out half the hillside to put in this riding ring … the structure is completely alien to the area."
The riding ring was intended to be a 27,000-square-foot building that would've been about six times the size of a typical home in the area and cost more than $7 million to build, according to the AP.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — The fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record in eastern Congo is rapidly spreading beyond its epicenter, Africa's top health body said Thursday.
In recent weeks, new cases and deaths have declined in Ituri province, the outbreak's epicenter, but risen sharply in neighboring North Kivu and Haut-Uele, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said at a weekly briefing.
According to the latest government figures released on Thursday, 6,843 cases have been reported, including 3,310 deaths. Ituri province remains the hardest-hit province, with more than 5,400 cases while North Kivu has reported over 1,000 cases since the outbreak was declared in May.
The outbreak in eastern Congo is spreading under extremely difficult conditions, fueled by insecurity, displacement, a health workers' strike and intense population movements. The situation is particularly concerning at displacement sites, where residents already live in extremely precarious conditions.
The World Health Organization has said the outbreak remains out of control and is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, the deadliest on record, which killed more than 11,000 people, primarily in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The SEC says that it's looking for an "appropriate resolution" after its presidents and chancellors met on Thursday following the drama surrounding LSU's pursuit of players who had signed NFL contracts.
The meeting was held a day after a hearing in the conference's suit against LSU and coach Lane Kiffin was continued. That continuance came after LSU filled its final two roster spots on Tuesday evening and left no ****** e to add former Ole Miss DT Zxavian Harris and ex-Rebels TE Dae'Quan Wright to the roster in 2026.
The two players had signed contracts with NFL teams but were cut during the preseason. They were eligible to return for a fifth season of college football after a Louisiana judge ruled that they should be granted an extra year following the NCAA's decision to give all college athletes in the class of 2023 and younger five years to play five seasons.
"The presidents and chancellors of the Southeastern Conference met Thursday by videoconference to discuss recent matters involving conference expectations and responsibilities," the SEC's brief statement said. "Those discussions will continue as the conference and its member universities work toward an appropriate resolution."
At one point, the Thursday meeting was slated to discuss the possibility of expelling LSU from the conference. As LSU had looked to sign both Harris and Wright, the conference made a rule that no player who had signed an NFL, NBA or WNBA contract could play for a member school.

Sept 9 (Reuters) - The Trump administration proposed on Wednesday changing the national census to include only U.S. citizens and permanent residents, a move that could significantly change how much ‌political representation and federal funding each state receives.
The U.S. Census Bureau submitted the proposal just over ‌a year after President Donald Trump ordered its parent agency to craft a new census that would block immigrants in the U.S. illegally from being counted. The bureau will conduct the next full census in 2030.
The proposed rule changes would exclude even more immigrants from the census, such as those in the U.S. on a temporary lawful basis. The proposed changes would also eliminate parts of the questionnaire that seek information on race or ethnicity, which have been included ‌since the first census in 1790.
The proposal ⁠is open to public comment for 30 days.

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko does not expect the SEC's escalating dispute with LSU to end with the Tigers being removed from the conference. During Wednesday's Aggie Football Hour, Elko compared the public standoff to a child testing a parent's limits before quickly backing down.
The SEC is no longer expected to vote Thursday on LSU's membership after the school finalized its 105-player football roster without former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Both players signed NFL contracts and participated in training camps before attempting to return to college football.
The controversy escalated after a Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction that opened the door for Wright, Harris and other athletes to regain their college eligibility. The SEC opposed LSU's plans, filed a federal lawsuit and scheduled a meeting of conference presidents and chancellors to consider the school's membership.
"This is a little bit like the son figuring out where the limits are until dad comes home and raises his voice, and then the son goes, 'I was just kidding, I didn't mean any of that,'" Elko said.
College athletics has resembled a never-ending soap opera in recent years, and the situation has only become more chaotic over the past few months. It is fair to say the sport has officially "jumped the shark."

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline hit $4.14 heading into Labor Day weekend, according to AAA, the highest ever recorded for the holiday and the first time the average has been above $4 on Labor Day. The price broke a record set 14 years ago, when the average was $3.82 on Sept. 3, 2012. A year ago, Americans were paying just $3.19.
On CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, host Dana Bash pointed out to Energy Secretary Chris Wright that he had said on the same show in April that gas prices had peaked and might not fall below $3 per gallon until 2027. She asked whether — with the war in Iran, the Russia-Ukraine war and dwindling U.S. reserves — prices could go higher.
"I don't want to have an opinion on that," Wright said.
He then pointed to the gasoline futures market, which he said was pricing the fuel about 30 cents a gallon lower two months out. He said the Trump administration had changed blending requirements to allow American refiners to produce more gasoline, and named several Democratic-led states that have declined to adopt the new standards.
"New York, Connecticut, California and several other Democrat-governed states have decided not to adopt those standards," Wright said. "They apparently want to keep driving up prices on their residents."

The Flying Biscuit Café has signed a franchise agreement with franchisee Keisha Carter to bring the Atlanta-born all-day breakfast and brunch brand to McDonough, Ga., and the surrounding Henry County market. The site and opening date will be announced separately.
Henry County is one of the fastest-growing counties in Georgia. Its population rose from 203,922 residents in 2010 to 240,712 in the 2020 census, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimated it at 264,922 in 2025. McDonough, the county seat and its largest city, sits along Interstate 75 about 30 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. Carter, who lives in the market, said growth there has outpaced the area's sit-down breakfast and brunch options — the gap that drew her to it.
Carter brings nearly 10 years of experience in sales, business development, operations, client relations and team leadership, including roles at several Fortune 500 companies before moving into entrepreneurship. She holds an MBA in finance management and is a Six Sigma Black Belt, and currently leads a metro Atlanta real estate group where she oversees business operations, marketing, sales strategy, team development and client experience. Being captain of the US Presidents Cup team is probably quite a thankless task given that the International side have managed to win on just one occasion since the tournament began in 1994.
While it feels important for the event that there is a close match this year, Snedeker will know what a win for the International Team would mean for his reputation.

A massive search for a missing 5-year-old autistic girl ended after authorities found her body in waters near Pawleys Island, South Carolina, and arrested her parents in Tennessee.
The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were arrested Tuesday evening in Tennessee and booked into the Carter County Jail on fugitive-from-justice charges.
The couple is accused of putting their daughter in danger or abandoning her under South Carolina law.

The body of their daughter, Saylor Hayes, was found near Hagley Landing after an intensive search involving hundreds of people and multiple agencies. The sheriff's office said the effort included deputies, investigators, first responders, partner agencies and local residents.

Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy on Tuesday said President Trump tapped her husband, Sean Duffy, to be Transportation secretary "because that was all that's left."
The two were interviewed on "The Katie Miller Podcast," hosted by the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. The host asked about their conversation after Trump nominated Duffy.
"He said he wanted to serve the president in any way," Campos-Duffy said. "He ended up in Transportation because that was all that's left."
Duffy, himself a former Fox News host, interjected and said he believed Trump when he told him, "If I wasn't the president, I would pick the Department of Transportation over any department. It's the best department, and I'm going to give it to you."
The secretary then emphasized Trump's focus on construction, having been a developer for much of his life, and said the U.S. has "a president who cares about the infrastructure of America. Usually, presidents don't give a darn."

Matt Entz is coaching at Fresno State, not Ohio State. He is coaching in the Football Bowl Subdivision's lower realm, not in its top tier, a point which will be magnified when Fresno State faces USC this Friday. Yet, as USA TODAY Sports reports, Entz is getting major investments and backing from his bosses and Fresno State football donors.

Klassy's vision for Fresno's "Valley Co-Op" has Entz touting a "quadrupled" monetary investment into the Bulldogs' football roster and sees Klassy linking it to the region.
"'I needed coaches, I needed more boots on the street, for lack of a better term, because it couldn't just be myself, it couldn't just be our Bulldog Foundation staff out there,' Klassy says of the program, which he relates to the San Joaquin Valley's 3 million residents and agricultural roots. 'And the coaches, it's really resonated with the coaches, and we do have a lot of supporters that give to multiple programs. There's two areas where we can make up ground on the rest of the league and that's philanthropic giving. And that's corporate sponsorship, and so we need to grow those immensely. And we're going to announce a record fundraising year, which is $5 million more annually than it was the previous year. Corporate sponsorships with the jersey patches are almost across the finish line; we should be up $2 to $3 million in that area. Now that doesn't make a big difference in the SEC or Big Ten, but that makes a huge difference for us.'
Klassy envisions the 4,300-member Valley Co-Op swelling to 7,000 across the next year.

There is a rising star to watch out for at the upcoming Presidents Cup.
Jackson Koivun will be a part of the United States team for the tournament, which runs Sept. 22-27 at Medinah Country Club in Chicago. The 21-year-old is one of three rookies, and captain Brandt Snedeker's last of his six picks, of the 12-man team that was revealed on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Koivun, who only has five PGA Tour starts, broke records in his time at college and got his first professional win this summer.
According to the ****** ociated Press, Koivun is making history as the first golfer to start a year without a PGA Tour card and play in the Presidents Cup since Jordan Spieth did so in 2013.
"I'm just happy he took a chance on me," Koivun said, per the news outlet. "I'm going to give it my all."
"You have to have a feeling. For some reason, I just had a gut feeling," Snedeker commented. "We'll see how that turns out. But I have full confidence he's ready for the challenge."

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jackson Koivun was added to the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup on Tuesday just three months after leaving Auburn, one of two newcomers to an American team that hasn't lost in 28 years.
Koivun, who won the 3M Open in his third start as a professional and qualified for the PGA Tour postseason in just five tournaments, is the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2013 to start a year without a tour card and play in the Presidents Cup.
U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker also took Jacob Bridgeman, who won at Riviera this year. Snedeker passed over Ryan Gerard, the No. 22 player in the world who contended at the Tour Championship and finished third.
International captain Geoff Ogilvy picked a pair of Canadians in Corey Conners and Nick Taylor. He also took Ryo Hisatsune. It will be the first time since 1998 the International team has two ***** anese players, with Hideki Matsuyama already earning one of the six automatic spots.
The Presidents Cup is Sept. 24-27 at Medinah, which has been entirely renovated by Ogilvy's Australia-based golf course design company.

The U.S. Presidents Cup captain selected former college phenom Jackson Koivun, who won the PGA Tour's 3M Open in just his third start as a professional. Koivun will be joined by a trio of U.S. team stalwarts in Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, as well as Chris Gotterup, who was narrowly on the wrong side of the cutoff for the six automatic selections.
