US stocks wavered on Friday morning as investors continued to calibrate to the Federal Reserve's first rate hike in three years and existential fears about artificial intelligence's capabilities.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) traded flat, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 0.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 0.3%.
The 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) rose 5 basis points to 5% on Friday as traders increased bets that the Fed will raise rates again in October.
Markets appeared to look past the Fed's 25 basis point rate hike this week, which was widely expected. US stock continued to climb after the Bank of ******* an raised interest rates to the highest level in 31 years.
However, ******* ysts and top CEOs aren't convinced that one rate hike (by the Fed) will be enough to bring down stubbornly high inflation. "It's not clear to me we've slayed inflation," JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told Yahoo Finance this week.

President Donald Trump's administration says it has approved the sale of nearly 50 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in a policy shift for the US that has raised concerns from some members of Congress.
Saudi Arabia has sought for years to buy the world's most advanced warplane, equipped with stealth technology that allows it to evade enemy detection.
Washington had resisted, partly because it supplies F-35s to its ally Israel, which is guaranteed under US law to receive top-of-the-range American weapons compared with those its regional neighbours can access.
Congress has 30 days to scrutinise or attempt to block the $24bn (£17.8bn) sale to Riyadh, which is the largest customer for US weapons.
Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, a Democrat, opposed the sale on Thursday.

On September 11, a caller praised The Boeing Company's (NYSE:BA) CEO and asked when the company would overcome the ongoing labor uncertainty and finally move beyond years of sideways stock performance. Mad Money host Jim Cramer replied:
I think that Boeing is ready to go up. But here's the problem. Every time crude goes up a dollar, the stock goes down a dollar. And that, think about it, that was actually the ratio. I did some work on this. And because today crude was down, Boeing went up $5... No, it's so stupid because, in truth, the airlines need more planes because the planes are more fuel-efficient. So they actually do better in this environment, but ******* ody cares. They know that airlines have to borrow money to buy planes and rates are higher, and they think that oil somehow's bad. But what ends up happening is the stock does nothing. I think it's about to go up because I think oil might be peaking unless there's some catastrophe over there.
The Boeing Company's (NYSE:BA) second-quarter results showed improving cash generation, but profitability remained weak. Revenue rose 8% year over year to $24.6 billion, while operating cash flow reached $1.4 billion and free cash flow was $631 million. Its total backlog reached a record $715 billion, including more than 6,200 commercial airplanes. CEO Kelly Ortberg said, "We're ramping up production just as we planned. That's driving higher revenues and improved cash flow." He also said there's more work ahead to ramp production, complete commercial-aircraft certifications and uphold customer commitments. Boeing said the 737-7 and 737-10 had completed flight testing, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027.
The Boeing Company's (NYSE:BA) large backlog has yet to translate into consistent commercial-aircraft profitability, leaving execution and margins as important concerns for investors. Commercial Airplanes delivered 171 aircraft in the second quarter but still posted a $322 million operating loss and a negative 2.7% operating margin. It also reported a $428 million GAAP net loss.
The balance sheet leaves less room for further setbacks. The company ended June with $45.9 billion of consolidated debt against $20 billion of cash and investments in marketable securities. The FAA certified the 737-7 on August 3, while Boeing continues working toward certification of the 737-10. First deliveries of the variants are expected in 2027. The company also recorded $280 million of losses on the VC-25B program in the quarter.

Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) say they would not have raised interest rates and discuss the impact of higher rates and inflation on consumers. Rep. Lawler says the Fed's decision demonstrated its independence and discusses President Trump's proposed $5,000 dividend and questions over how it would be paid for. Rep. Gottheimer says higher rates will hurt consumers through credit-card bills, housing payments and other costs. They also discuss their bipartisan Stop Rogue AI Act and the need for federal standards to identify and control AI agents, while keeping the US competitive in artificial intelligence. They speak with Kailey Leinz and Joe Mathieu on Bloomberg's "Balance of Power."

Private equity dealmakers in the US are poised for higher borrowing costs as the Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised interest rates for the first time since 2023.
The rate-setting committee unanimously agreed to raise the benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point, and officials largely agreed that, at the current trend, one more hike would be needed in 2026.
The decision lifted the federal funds rate to a target range of 3.75% to 4%, in line with market expectations heading into the September meeting.
Kyle Walters, a PE ******* yst at PitchBook, described the rate hike as "directionally negative for PE exit activity," though it is unlikely to cause significant damage on its own.
"The larger question is whether this rate hike is a one-off or if more are to follow. If it's the latter, that would have a more negative impact on monetization efforts, as most LBO debt is floating rate, which results in higher interest expense on these companies, and can damage the financial statements prospective buyers look at."

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday, marking its first hike in more than three years, in a move that will likely make borrowing more expensive while giving savers a modest boost.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh and the Federal Open Market Committee announced a widely expected quarter-point rate increase and indicated another to come.
The stock market's reaction to the Fed's announcement is likely to draw the most headlines, and John Shugar, a partner at Goldman Sachs, leans toward an optimistic scenario.

The Federal Reserve doesn't set student loan rates directly, but its federal funds rate influences the 10-year Treasury yield (which determines federal loan rates) and the prime rate (which determines private loan rates).
But exactly how the Fed affects your cost of borrowing depends on the type of student loans and interest rate you have.
After the Federal Reserve's September 2026 meeting, it raised interest rates by 25 basis points. See how that might impact the cost of your student loans.
One of the Federal Reserve's main goals is to keep inflation under control. It does this partly by adjusting the federal funds rate — the rate banks charge one another for short-term loans.

Bain Capital Ventures closed its 11th flagship fund at $1.6 billion on Wednesday, betting big on a "post-AGI world" that places AI agents as the chief economic driver of productivity.
The firm has been swapping software for something venture capital has never underwritten: AI-native companies that sell the work itself rather than the technology behind it.
Software startups made up 80% of Fund IX and around 20% of Fund X, said partner Matt Harris. For Fund X, AI-native startups made up 80% of the portfolio.
"The classic software startup is just not being born anymore," Harris said. "These companies where AI is just one feature among many, I think that's thoroughly uninteresting to us and, most importantly, to the most ambitious founders."
BCV defines "post-AGI" as AI agents being as productive as humans. This model's first proof point came in the form of Reserv, an AI-native insurance claims administration startup that the firm incubated with Altai Ventures and other partners. According to Harris, the company hit $100 million in revenue in its second full year. In May, the company raised a $125 million Series C.

The Federal Reserve influences consumer loan rates by setting the federal funds rate, which affects how much banks charge each other for overnight lending. That cost typically gets passed on to borrowers through higher or lower rates on personal, auto, and student loans.
By tracking the Fed's moves, you can get a better sense of whether taking out a loan will be more expensive or more affordable. It may even help you time your borrowing decisions so you can secure the best possible rate.
The Fed recently raised its rate by 25 basis points during its September 2026 meeting. See what impact that could have on your borrowing costs.
The Federal Reserve sets a target range for the federal funds rate, a benchmark rate that determines how much lenders charge one another for overnight lending. When the Fed increases this rate, lenders generally pass along the higher costs to consumers by raising interest rates on consumer loans and credit cards. When the Fed decreases this rate, lenders may lower the interest rates on their loans as well.

WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve officials expect one more interest rate increase this year after raising rates on Wednesday and expect to hold them steady in 2027, quarterly projections released after their latest policy meeting showed.
At the same time, policymakers also marked up their near-term inflation outlook.
The forecasts were released as policymakers raised the target rate for fed funds by a quarter of a percentage point to 3.75%-4.00%, which was widely expected. Their new forecasts see rates coming back down in 2028 and for the federal funds rate to stand at between 3.50% and 3.75% in 2029.
In June, Fed officials in their projections had penciled in one quarter-percentage-point rate rise this year and a cut of the same amount in 2027.

Sept 16 (Reuters) - Top U.S. banks raised their prime lending rate on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve lifted its benchmark interest rate, a move that would increase borrowing costs for consumers and businesses with loans.
Following the Fed's first rate hike since 2023, the prime rate of JPMorgan , Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, KeyCorp, Huntington Bancshares, Fifth Third Bancorp and Truist Financial from Thursday will rise to 7% from 6.75%.
The Fed raised rates by a quarter of a percentage point on Wednesday and flagged further increases in borrowing costs in the coming months as policymakers focus on addressing persistent inflation.
Shares of big banks ended lower amid broader weakness in U.S. stocks. BofA closed down 2.7%, Citi 2.4%, Wells Fargo 3%, and JPMorgan 1%. Morgan Stanley slipped 1.9% and Goldman Sachs fell 4%.
The prime rate, which follows the federal funds rate, is used by U.S. banks as a reference for setting rates on many financial products such as credit cards and personal loans.

NEW YORK, Sept 16 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday and flagged further increases in borrowing costs in coming months, with new US central bank chief Kevin Warsh joining a unanimous decision that effectively acknowledges the Trump administration's inability so far to control inflation.
Speaking in Washington after the decision's release, Warsh echoed the official statement in promising the Fed's policy committee would "deliver price stability." Stocks and bonds sold off late Wednesday afternoon, reflecting expectations that rates may continue to rise for some time.
New policy projections showed 16 of 18 policymakers anticipate at least one more quarter-percentage-point hike by the end of this year, with only two of them seeing rates remaining stable from here. Warsh apparently again did not submit a rate projection.
It's the first policy shift under the new Fed chief, who took office in late May after being selected by Trump with an expectation that he would cut rates.
The Fed's new policy statement and economic projections, to the contrary, show a central bank opening the door on tighter monetary policy through next year, with the policy rate rising to the 4.00%-4.25% range by the end of this year and ending 2027 at the same level.

Union Pacific Corp (NYSE:UNP, XETRA:UNP) received a UBS upgrade to Buy from Neutral as the broker forecast stronger 2027 growth, excluding potential NSC merger benefits from its base case.
UBS raised its price target from $310 to $339, applying an unchanged multiple of 21 times its 2028 earnings forecast of $16.15 per share.
The bank expects intermodal volumes to grow 6% to 7% in 2027, citing current volume momentum and the relationship between intermodal performance and truckload pricing cycles.
Alongside industrial growth and a roughly neutral contribution from coal and grain, those intermodal gains underpin UBS's forecast for 3.5% total volume growth in 2027.
Low inventories should support steel shipments, while elevated energy prices should sustain petroleum and products volumes, the broker said.

Equities have taken the news “relatively well,” but “evidence of the Fed’s hawkishness is in the slightly firmer U.S. dollar and lower gold price,” Capital.com senior financial market ***** yst Kyle Rodda says in a note. “A special focus will be on the shape of the yield curve too as markets ***** s what impact policy is having on long-term inflation expectations.” Gold for December delivery is off 0.1% at $4,327.10 a troy ounce and silver up 0.7% at $64.33 a troy ounce. WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - U.S. retail sales rebounded sharply in August as households boosted purchases of a range of goods while also spending more at restaurants and bars, reinforcing the economy's resilience even as consumers grow more anxious about high inflation.
The stronger-than-expected report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday prompted economists to upgrade their gross domestic product growth estimates for the third quarter. Inflation jitters were underscored by news of a surge in import prices last month amid strong increases in the costs of capital and consumer goods.
The reports followed data this month showing producer and consumer prices accelerated in August, while the labor market regained its poise after wobbling through much of summer.
The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised its benchmark overnight interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to the 3.75%-4.00% range and flagged further increases in borrowing costs in the months ahead.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point on Wednesday, the first increase since July 2023, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh saying inflation has been "too high ... for too long."
The decision, reached by a unanimous 12-0 vote of the Federal Open Market Committee, brings the federal funds rate to a new target range of 3.75%–4%. The Fed's post-meeting statement pointed to persistent price pressures and a durable economy, declaring: "Inflation remains elevated. Today's policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee's 2 percent goal. The Committee will deliver price stability."
At a news conference following the decision, Warsh said the Fed needed to be confident "that underlying inflation is moving to our objective clearly and at sufficient speed," adding that the FOMC had determined "this standard has not been satisfied." He pointed to three converging factors — a robust labor market, inflation still running above target, and ongoing conflict in the Middle East — as driving the committee's unanimous vote.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed more than 400 points in afternoon trading following the Fed's move. The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also slumped.
Updated economic projections released Wednesday showed FOMC participants nudged their inflation forecasts higher. The median projection for headline PCE inflation this year rose to 3.7% and core PCE to 3.4%, each up 0.1 percentage point from the June forecast, the Fed said. Officials do not expect inflation to return to the 2% target until 2029. The median unemployment rate projection for 2026 fell to 4.1%, down from 4.3% in June, while the GDP growth outlook rose to 2.3% from 2.2%.

For much of 2025, UnitedHealth Group (UNH) looked like a company under siege as higher medical costs and weaker margins rattled investors. UNH stock sold off sharply, and questions emerged around the company's earnings outlook as well as the health of its long-standing growth story.
That picture is starting to improve in 2026. UnitedHealth's latest results showed a clear turnaround in profitability as it generated $112 billion in revenue and $8 billion in earnings from operations. Management also raised the company's full-year adjusted EPS outlook to a range of $19.50 to $20 and increased its operating cash flow forecast to about $24 billion. Those moves suggest UnitedHealth sees its recovery as more than a short-term earnings rebound.

BTI yields 5.83% and beats MO on growth, trading at a cheaper forward P/E of 11 with EPS guidance of 5 to 8% versus Altria's 2.5 to 5.5%.
Altria wins on income reliability, having raised its dividend 60 times in 56 years with a 6.10% yield paid in dollars with zero currency risk.
BTI's Modern Oral segment surged 47% while Altria's nicotine pouch share fell 4 points and cigarette volumes dropped 10% in 2025.

For a retirement-focused investor weighing high-yield tobacco names, the question is direct: British American Tobacco (NYSE:BTI) or Altria Group (NYSE:MO), which screens better for income investors right now? Both throw off cash, both trade at single-digit-to-low-teens forward earnings, and both are racing to replace shrinking combustible volumes with nicotine pouches, vapor, and heated tobacco. But when you line them up on the metrics that actually matter for a retiree cashing checks, one name comes out ahead.

Cerebras Systems (NASDAQ:CBRS) has been cut in half. Shares of the artificial intelligence (AI) computing specialist peaked at $386.34 on their first day of trading in May, a day after the company priced its initial public offering (IPO) at $185 and raised $6.4 billion. As of this writing, the stock trades around $184 -- about 52% below the high, and just under that IPO price.
A decline like that usually follows a stumble: a guidance cut, a lost customer, a bad quarter. Cerebras hasn't had one. Shares dropped double digits anyway the day after its mid-August update, arguably the company's strongest yet and one in which management raised its outlook for the year.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Yet even at half price, the stock costs about 145 times the earnings **** ysts expect the company to generate next year.
What did the fall reprice -- the business, or just the price tag?

"You basically have a market where all of the heavy lifting has actually been done on the earnings side," Shugar said in an ***** ysis. He points to "terrific opportunities" in various AI consumer sectors, though "over the next few weeks, we may have a lot more speed ***** ps."

Amazon raised minimum starting pay for its U.S. full-time core operations employees to $20 an hour on Wednesday, a $1-per-hour increase for front-line workers who sort, pack, and transport orders.
Amazon said the typical hourly rate for those workers climbs to nearly $24, and that when benefits are counted, total compensation comes out to more than $32 an hour. Amazon said its minimum starting pay has risen more than 17% over the past three years.
The announcement arrives as Amazon approaches the peak holiday shopping season. According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon hired 250,000 full-time, part-time, and seasonal workers in advance of last year's holiday period.
Along with the pay increase, Amazon announced two new benefits. Beginning Oct. 1, all U.S. Amazon employees will receive a grocery discount — 10% off eligible groceries and everyday essentials on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online, and 20% off in-store at Whole Foods. The discount can be combined with existing Prime member discounts, the company said.
Amazon also said it is launching a banking benefit called Day 1 Financial, through which qualified employees and their families can obtain a lifelong membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union. The benefit includes accounts with no overdraft fees, no monthly maintenance fees, and no account minimums, as well as access to credit cards, auto loans, and home loans for those who qualify. The company said the rollout will start in late 2026, with broad availability expected in 2027.

London-based Velocity has raised an additional $10 million, extending its Series A to $48 million at a $200 million post-money valuation, with participation from Visa Ventures, Circle Ventures, and Ripple. The fresh capital will fund infrastructure connecting stablecoins to existing payment networks, settlement systems, and corporate treasury operations.
The extension follows a $38 million Series A announced in July, which CEO Eric Queathem said was oversubscribed. Haun Ventures, Translink Capital, and Mirana Ventures also joined the extension round, pushing the total investor list well beyond typical crypto-native venture backers into strategic corporate money from a card network and a stablecoin issuer directly.
Velocity's platform lets payment companies and banks use stablecoins for settlement, liquidity, and treasury operations without ripping out the systems they already run. That's a deliberate scope: the company is targeting the layer connecting issuers, card networks, acquirers, and merchants, not the wallet consumers see.
Stablecoin circulation has grown past $300 billion, with usage expanding from crypto-exchange dollar transfers into payments, cross-border transfers, and corporate treasury work, the exact seam Velocity is trying to occupy.
