ILORIN, Kwara (AP) — Some of the 163 kidnapped Nigerians rescued from jihadi captivity have spoken of the suffering and fear they lived in for six months.
The freed captives, mostly women and children, were among over 300 kidnap victims freed by Nigerian forces this week.
They were handed over to the authorities by security forces in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state, on Friday for medical attention and routine checks, and were anticipating their return home to reunite with their families.
Mary Ishaya recalled days without food, and being asked alongside others to bury other hostages who died in captivity.

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Ransom-seeking hackers who use phone calls to compromise their victims targeted dozens of prominent U.S. financial institutions and other businesses over the past month, according to Google and internet intelligence data reviewed by Reuters.
The data shows the hackers devised websites aimed at stealing passwords from employees of private equity firms and companies including Blackstone, Bridgewater **** ociates, Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, KKR, TPG, CME Group and Moody's, as well as a host of financial companies and other businesses. Internet company Google said in a blog post about the hacking campaign published on Thursday that the hackers operate under a range of names, including Redact, Pink, Falcon, and Helix.
Google declined to comment on Reuters findings. It said in some cases companies, which it did not name, paid ransoms to the hackers. Reuters could not establish which companies the hackers successfully compromised.

A Maryland federal judge sentenced 25-year-old Hunter Haithcock to 3 1/2 years of incarceration after he pleaded guilty to counts of wire and investment advisor fraud last fall.
According to the court, between September 2019 and October 2022, Haithcock stole at least $655,498 from his victims. Haithcock, who was based in North Carolina, lied to victims, claiming he worked as a registered investment advisor. President Donald Trump is appealing a federal judge's decision to continue investigating whether his lawsuit against the IRS was part of a greater scheme to mislead the court.
Trump filed his notice to appeal the ruling by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, who ruled earlier this month that her court had the authority to continue probing a $10 billion lawsuit Trump, his family and businesses filed against the IRS for failing to safeguard his tax return information from leaks.
The parties announced a controversial out-of-court agreement in May in which the Justice Department — representing the IRS — would create a nearly $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization fund" to pay out purported victims of political retribution and the IRS would spare Trump and his businesses from ongoing audits.
In a blistering order July 13, Williams accused Trump of filing the lawsuit to "gain the imprimatur of judicial legitimacy for a 'settlement' that had no viable basis in law or fact." She also said exempting Trump from audits would violate a federal law that prohibits the White House from directing IRS investigations.
Williams also noted that the case itself defied legal procedure because Trump sued an administration he runs, essentially putting him in the position of both plaintiff and defendant.

The emergency appeal comes after a lower court reinstated the damages in the wake of a Supreme Court decision that followed more than two decades of litigation.

The twister touched down in the Fox Cities region, which includes Appleton, Menasha and Neenah, at around 1 p.m. Monday and remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes as it cut a roughly 12-mile path of destruction through an area, the National Weather Service reported. It was nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) across at its widest, and it destroyed homes and businesses, flipped cars and knocked down rows of power lines in the region, which is roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee.
The timing — it blew in when most people were awake and after warnings had been issued — could be why there have been no reported deaths, authorities said.
"I think what helped us was it was during the week," Menasha Police Chief Matt Albrecht said at a news conference Tuesday. "Everybody was at work. It was the middle of the day. Most people were not at home and at their place of employment."
Authorities said a number of people were injured and treated at hospitals, but they didn't know exactly how many or how seriously.

Desmond Tremaine Mason, the former basketball player who attended Oklahoma State University and once played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is facing new felony charges in Oklahoma over allegations that he failed to deliver items after being paid.

British prosecutors announced on Saturday their intention to seek the Tate brothers' extradition on charges of raping and trafficking women between 2010 and 2017. Per the BBC, British authorities have issued a total of 38 new charges against them.

The Seattle Seahawks have been relatively clean when it comes to off the field issues, particularly arrests these past few years. The last time an active Seahawk was arrested was back in 2022 when Geno Smith was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and reckless driving.
