Major sporting events in the New York/N ew Jersey are have **** aulted by outrageous ticket prices this summer. During the NBA Finals, ticket prices got so out of control that U.S. President Donald Trump faced major backlash for not showing sympathy for fans who had been priced out.
"That's the way life goes," Trump said at the time. "Now, if the team wasn't a big success, you could go very easily. That's just the way life is."
Ticket prices also reached outrageous numbers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although Trump showed a little more sympathy in that instance.
"If people from Queens and Brooklyn and all of the people that love Donald Trump can't go, I would be disappointed, but, you know, at the same time, it's an amazing success," he said. "I would like to be able to have the people that voted for me to be able to go."
The President hasn't publicly addressed the surging prices ahead of the U.S. Open, but New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has taken matters into his own hands.

Max Holloway may lose a portion of his fight purse following his UFC 329 victory over Conor McGregor — and he's not alone. Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) will decide on Wednesday if the former featherweight and BMF champ, along with lightweight contender Paddy Pimblett and heavyweight newcomer Gable Steveson, will incur disciplinary fines for cage hopping during the July 11 fight card in Las Vegas.
Pimblett defeated Benoit Saint Denis, not long after Steveson steamrolled Elisha Ellison.

Hayden Panettiere's death this week, just five days before her 37th birthday, marks the latest tragic end for a child star. In recent months, Panettiere had become more transparent about the trauma, including **** ual exploitation, she endured as a young actress. The timing of her death is tragic both in light of her age and how recently she appeared to have been winning her fight against addiction. Her efforts to reclaim her autonomy should be acknowledged for what she overcame — and for what fame does to child stars.
Panettiere began appearing in commercials at just 11 months old; by age 5, she'd been in 50. Her breakout role came at age 10, playing a coach's spirited daughter in "Remember the **** ans." Her multiseason portrayals of an indestructible cheerleader on the television series "Heroes" and a troubled country music star on ABC's "Nashville" made her a cultural fixture to millennials.
For decades, the autonomy, safety and happiness of child stars were not a priority for insatiable audiences nor the Hollywood industrial complex. If Panettiere's accounts are any guide, they still aren't.

Somalian referee Omar Artan, who was denied the chance to referee at the World Cup after being refused entry to the United States, will take charge of the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on Wednesday.
Before the World Cup started in June, the 34-year-old referee unwittingly found himself in the media spotlight after being turned away on arrival at Miami International Airport, despite being part of the panel of referees selected by FIFA for the tournament.
"It was a very tough period," Artan said in an interview published on the UEFA website.
"A lot of people have sympathy for me, because when someone has been working a lot of years and is supposed to do something, and then can't do it, it's very challenging."
A US State Department official told AFP that the referee was "associated with suspected members of terrorist organizations", therefore "making the traveler ineligible for admission to the United States".

For most coaches, the issue of player concussions requires sympathy. Moving forward, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will easily be able to empathize with players who have suffered head trauma.
In his first training-camp press conference following a July 11 automobile accident, Shanahan was asked if the severe concussion that he sustained will change his perspective on players who are dealing with the effects of brain injuries.
"Yeah, no doubt," Shanahan said. "I've been told so much by these guys, don't compare a sports concussion to an accident like this. I'm starting to realize that now. Just little things, like when they label things, like whether it's severe or mild. You hear someone has a mild one, I'm like, 'Oh, alright. It might be one game, but usually that's two.' Then you kind of learn those are just words. Each one's a little bit different. I definitely can relate to how scary it is when you don't know if you will feel right again. It's definitely made me more educated on it. Usually I just listen, and like, 'Tell me when, OK?' and I move on, but I understand it a lot better and what guys got to go through and the protocol to get back. There's not a protocol for me on paper, but it's really cool to be in a profession that knows what to do with those things. All the people that I need help from, it was already built in here. They've got a lot of experience with it, and it's been really good for me."
If anything, players need to be encouraged to not return until they're fully back to normal. Some players will try to hide their symptoms. Some will resist being evaluated. Some will tank the baseline cognitive exams so that it will be easier to be cleared to return. (Peyton Manning once admitted to doing that, before walking it back as a joke.)
Starting in 2009, when Congress got involved in the issue of brain health, the NFL began to take concussions very seriously. For the most part, it does. (There are still periodic lapses in the concussion-spotting process.)

Ryan Clark worked with ESPN for 11 years, but the network decided to cut ties with the 2009 Super Bowl champion during the broadcast of a recent 'NFL Live' episode.
Since then, Clark has tried to clarify his side of the story. But he has done so by playing the victim card and even breaking down in tears on 'The Pivot' podcast.

When the latest batch of ESPN layoffs was revealed to include Ryan Clark, the reactions were mixed. Yet, a lot of people felt sympathy for the NFL ***** yst after he lost his job at a popular network.

"It couldn't have happened to a better guy," Poirier said on Deep Waters. "That injury couldn't have happened to a better guy.
