SEOUL, Aug 10 (Reuters) - South Korea will launch a 5 trillion won ($3.52 billion) semiconductor fund targeting promising chip materials, parts, equipment and fabless companies, a presidential official said, as Seoul seeks to accelerate plans for new chip manufacturing hubs across the country.
The government will also provide a further 5 trillion won in trade finance for suppliers, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik told a press briefing after a meeting chaired by President Lee Jae Myung on Monday.
The measures are part of Lee's semiconductor megaproject initiative unveiled in June, under which Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, together with suppliers and local governments, are expected to invest more than $576 billion in new chip manufacturing projects, including major fabrication facilities in the country's southwest region.
"The government will create a new semiconductor fund worth about 5 trillion won focused on promising materials, parts and equipment firms and fabless companies," Kang said.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Around 50,000 fans watched Manchester City beat Atlético Madrid 3-1 in a pre-season exhibition game at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Sunday, offering a rare example of soccer making headlines for on-field action here during a scandal-hit summer.
The big transfer news of the period saw South Korea's star player Lee Kang-in move from Paris Saint-Germain to Atlético Madrid last month in a deal reportedly worth more than $40 million.
Despite Lee's second-half introduction, he couldn't prevent Manchester City rallying from a goal down to win. Jorge Dominguez put Madrid ahead just before the break but two goals from Omar Marmoush and one from Rayan Ait-Nouri gave the English club the victory.
The match offered a welcome break from the World Cup fallout, which involved police raids and parliamentary hearings. A leaked government audit recently revealed that Korea Football ****** ociation (KFA) officials used corporate credit cards in 2011 and 2012 to pay for services at adult entertainment venues for foreign referees.
"We express our sincere apologies for causing concerns over a range of issues, from a parliamentary hearing and an unprecedented police raid to media reports about incidents from more than a decade ago that even members within the federation were unaware of," the KFA said in a statement Saturday.

Omar Marmoush scored twice in a three-minute spell in the second half as Manchester City came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid in a friendly in Seoul, South Korea.
The Spanish side took the lead just before half-time when City failed to properly clear Koke's corner and Morten Hjulmand set up 16-year-old Jorge Dominguez, who shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
But City equalised in the 57th minute. Antoine ***** yo did well to slide and keep the ball in play before he charged into the penalty area down the left flank and his low cross was converted by Marmoush.
The pair linked up again two minutes later with a near identical goal - Marmoush finishing comfortably following ***** yo's low cross from the left.
There was a crowd of more than 50,000 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and the loudest cheer was reserved for the second-half introduction of Atletico's South Korea international Lee Kang-in.

It's been another game-changing summer in women's football, with giants like Barcelona needing a complete refresh at Michele Kang's sides making big moves. But one team has turned its attention to youth: Manchester United. Whether it's a cost-cutting measure or a savvy long-term strategy, could it work?
The recent departure of Marc Skinner is a big development for the Red Devils. On the one hand, Skinner was rightly frustrated by his team's reluctance to push further after achieving an FA Cup victory and Champions League football during his five years.
On the other hand, Skinner had never completely won over the United faithful and a refresh of ideas could be exactly what is needed with the impending appointment of Eva Olid (pictured).
The Spanish coach worked wonders during her time at Hearts, which culminated in a league ******* le victory last season before she left the club.
Olid was said to be frustrated by Hearts' failure to push on from there, something she may well experience yet again in Manchester. However, according to reports United are set to focus on their youth system and she will have plenty to work with.

PSG have no interest in making a move for AFC Bournemouth winger Rayan (19), according to Le Parisien. The Brazilian international was rumoured to be of interest for the back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners, but those rumours have been quashed by the Ligue 1 champions. PSG had an interest in RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomandé, but the Ivory Coast international appears destined to join José Mourinho's Real Madrid side.
More movement is expected for PSG to bolster Luis Enrique's attacking options until the end of the summer transfer window. Les Parisiens have reached a €50m agreement with Ligue 1 rivals AS Monaco to sign Maghnes Akliouche. The versatile France international is expected to replace Lee Kang-in – who joined Atlético de Madrid in a €40m move – and bring competition for the right-winger to Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola.
However, the latter could be sold with Liverpool expressing an interest. The Reds are expected to submit a bid to PSG. Meanwhile, the Ligue 1 champions also need a back-up striker after parting ways with Gonçalo Ramos. 2026 World Cup winner Ferran Torres and Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere are billed as the favourites to bring depth.

Paris Saint-Germain are not expected to attempt to sign AFC Bournemouth's Éli Junior Kroupi (20) this summer, according to reports from RMC Sport.
Whilst seeking an attacking reinforcement to compensate for the departures of Gonçalo Ramos (24), Lee Kang-in (25) and Randal Kolo Muani (27), the Rouge et Bleu management have not, for the time being, opened the door to the young striker's arrival in the capital, although he is reportedly interested in the project and has supporters within the club.
However, given the Cherries' determination to keep him and the potential cost of prising him away, the Kroupi deal is not currently a priority. A sum in excess of €100m is said to be the minimum required for any club wishing to secure his services.
Meanwhile, Barcelona's Ferran Torres (26) and Atalanta's Charles de Ketelaere (25) – whose names have already been linked with the two-time European champions – are on Paris's shortlist. So too is a third player, whose identity has not yet been revealed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office is accusing New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of attacking the Jewish state to distract from his record in New York after calling Netanyahu a "war criminal."
The prime minister's office fired back Sunday after the Democratic mayor said his administration was exploring whether it could arrest the Israeli leader during an expected visit to the city under the International Criminal Court's warrant.

The last few days have been full of news coming from London City Lionesses, with the latest being the signings of former Barcelona players, Alexia Putellas and Mapi León. However, the transfer window is not closed and they’re going for more.
Just this morning, Spanish journalist Andrea Peláez Marzo broke the news that Kadidiatou Diani’s next team will be the London City Lionesses. After announcing yesterday that she wasn’t renewing with OL Lyionnes, she’s moving to London City Lionesses.
The news came as a surprise since the 31-year-old French striker had a year left in her contract. According to reports, the London club is paying a fee expected to exceed £500,000 for her.
But that’s not it because Sakina Karchaoui has also been linked with Michelle Kang’s English team. The French international defender has been playing with PSG since 2021 and has a contract with the Parisian club until June 2028.

Alexia Putellas has not been home since early June. By the time she walks into The New York Times office in Manhattan, more than a month has passed in a blur of airports, hotel rooms and timezones. It's her last stop before returning home.
"I am really tired," the former Barcelona midfielder says as she takes her seat in a corner room overlooking the edge of Times Square.
Plenty has transpired in the 32-year-old's life this summer — including emotions that she still needs to digest.
In May, Putellas won her fourth Champions League ***** le. A few days later, she said goodbye to the club she had spent the last 14 seasons growing. At the time, her next step in soccer was still unknown.
She traveled to Venezuela, where devastating earthquakes struck while she was working events for her Eleven Foundation and the Liga Monumental. She then made her way to the U.S. for, among other things, a chance to watch Spain's men's at World Cup in Los Angeles. The day before we talk, she was at the W Hotel in Union Square alongside multi-club owner Michele Kang for her official unveiling as a London City Lionesses player.

Louisiana's attorney general was indicted Thursday over accusations she threatened the jobs of New Orleans leaders who fought a Republican-led overhaul of local courts in the heavily Democratic city.
The 16-count indictment against Republican Liz Murrill, handed up by a New Orleans grand jury, charges Louisiana's first female attorney general with intimidation and malfeasance. At the center of the case are deepening rifts between state leaders in Louisiana, which is heavily Republican, and Democrats who control the state's most prominent city.
Republican Gov. Jeff Landry promised a swift pardon, saying Murrill would not have her reputation tarnished by an "Orleans Kangaroo court." Mayor Helena Moreno, a Democrat, was among those who had accused the state's top law enforcement official in May of making threats against public officials.
Murrill called the case against her "retaliatory, meritless, and unconstitutional." Late Thursday, Murrill said she had filed for an emergency stay with the Louisiana Supreme Court.
"I will not back down. I will continue enforcing the law, fighting corruption, and doing the job the people of Louisiana elected me to do," she wrote on X.

TAIPEI, June 30 (Reuters) - Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te warned military cadets on Tuesday not to succumb to China's spying activities and to defend freedom and democracy, speaking at a Cold War-era college originally set up to teach against the perils of communism.
Taiwan and China, which views the democratically governed island as its own territory, have long spied on each other, and Taiwan in particular has reported an increased number of Chinese espionage cases, especially in the armed forces.
China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, and its military operates daily around the island.
A soldier's honour stems from loyalty, Lai told a graduation ceremony at the Fu Hsing Kang College on the outskirts of Taipei.

A soldier's honour stems from loyalty, Lai told a graduation ceremony at the Fu Hsing Kang College on the outskirts of Taipei.

CHASKA, Minn. — Ina Yoon matched the best score in the history of the Women's PGA Championship with a 9-under 63 to take a two-stroke lead over Karis Davidson on Thursday in the third major of the season.
Yoon, a 23-year-old South Korean seeking her first LPGA Tour victory, birdied five of her last six holes at Hazeltine National Golf Club with a putter that was consistently on point.
Nelly Korda, who's aiming to become just the third women to win the first three major tournaments on the schedule, had a 70.
Davidson, who finished more than four hours after Yoon, had eight birdies on the way to a career-best 65 on a calm and partly cloudy afternoon that yielded a bevy of low scores on the long course southwest of Minneapolis that requires accuracy and muscle off the tee.
Alexa Pano and A Lim Kim were tied for third 67, and Aline Krauter, Hye-Jin Choi and Megan Kang followed at 68.

Lee Kang-in (25) looks set to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer. There has been long-standing interest from Atletico Madrid, however, as per a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the La Liga side may face competition from Juventus.
Atletico Madrid’s interest dates back to last summer. At the time, however, PSG were keen to retain the South Korea international. After another season of playing a back-up role at the Parc des Princes, Lee now wants to play a bigger part. It is unlikely that he will do so at PSG and so an exit is likely. The reigning European champions are already actively scouting for a replacement. He may come in the form of AS Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche.
Lee’s destination, however, is uncertain. Atletico Madrid are ready to spend €25m on the former RCD Mallorca forward, La Gazzetta dello Sport understands. However, Juventus, who have faced difficulties in their pursuit of Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz, could also make their move.

South Africa beat South Korea 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in their history -- an astonishing turnaround after a dismal opening defeat.
The Bafana Bafana, playing at the tournament for the first time since they hosted it in 2010, were widely written off after their 2-0 loss to Group A winners Mexico.
But they battled to a draw against the Czech Republic and came out on top of what was effectively a shootout with South Korea for second place in Monterrey, thanks to Thapelo Maseko's second-half strike.
South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo made a shock call by leaving captain Son Heung-min -- considered by many to be Asia's greatest-ever player -- out of the starting line-up.
The Asian team started strongly, with stand-in captain Kim Min-jae's powerful header blocked on the goalline by Aubrey Modiba before Lee Kang-in flashed wide.

According to a report from Sacha Tavolieri, Olympique Lyonnais are set to avoid sanctions when they meet with the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG) this year. The Rhone club have been under strict monitoring after financial difficulty.
OL were previously relegated to Ligue 2 by the French football financial watchdog, but this decision was reversed on appeal. A stricter policy on the way the club has been run under the presidency of Michelle Kang has seen the club’s financial picture improve.
With capital injected into the football club, and costs reduced, Lyon look like they will be able to breathe easier when they meet with the DNCG. This is a stark contrast to previous meetings with the body where the club’s future in Ligue 1 has been at stake.
