SEOUL, Sept 7 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country's newest destroyer would be part of a nuclear response system and could deliver "annihilating retaliatory strikes", state media KCNA reported on Monday, although it did not say whether the vessel would carry nuclear weapons.
North Korea has accelerated efforts to modernise its navy as Kim pursues a broader expansion of the country's nuclear-capable forces.
At a commissioning ceremony in the eastern port city of Wonsan on Sunday, Kim said the new ship's deployment to the sea east of the Korean Peninsula sent a clear signal to North Korea's adversaries.
"The time has come for us to exercise our sovereignty at sea and under water," Kim said, according to KCNA.
The 5,000-ton-class destroyer, the "Kang Kon", is the second warship of its class to enter service, following the commissioning of the "Choe Hyon" destroyer on North Korea's west coast about three months earlier, KCNA cited Kim as saying.

Sacco, a longtime Massachusetts charter fishing boat captain, saw the giant fin break the surface, and at first he thought he was dealing with an enormous shark.
"Then I got a better look at it and thought, dang, that thing's pointed," he said. "But that's too big for a marlin."
He was wrong. Sacco and his client Walter Chapman landed what they and others believe is the largest Atlantic blue marlin ever caught off the U.S. East Coast on Wednesday. The massive billfish, more than 11 feet (335 cm) in length, weighed 1,260 pounds (571.5 kilograms) when they got it back to land in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
That was just 142 pounds (64.4 kilograms) shy of the world record for an Atlantic blue marlin, caught off Brazil in 1992, according to records kept by the International Game Fish ****** ociation.

Trump was doubling down on plans he and Elon Musk, then-head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) made last year, calling on an audit of the reserves to delve into conspiracies that gold had been stolen.
Now, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is offering **** urance the cache of gold is indeed safe and sound—but is completely inconsequential to the value of the dollar today.
"The treasurer has been to Fort Knox," Bessent said in a recent Fox News appearance. "I am happy to say all gold is present and accounted for. The U.S. has the largest pile of gold in the world, over a trillion dollars at current market value."
Established in 1918 in Kentucky, Fort Knox was a key military installation for the U.S. through both World Wars and the Vietnam War. The Fort Knox Bullion Depository was added years later, holding much of the U.S. gold reserves beginning in 1937. More than half of Pennsylvania voters in a new poll want Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) to leave the Democratic Party.
Fetterman's approval rating, at 48 percent, was above water in Quinnipiac University data. But 52 percent of respondents said they'd like to see him depart the party amid speculation that Republicans have been wooing the famously centrist Democrat.
The share of voters who want him to switch sides includes 57 percent of Democrats, 55 percent of Republicans and 46 percent of independents.
"The Democrats would like to show him the door. The Republicans seem to be welcoming him in. Thus is the political irony of Senator John Fetterman," Quinnipiac University polling ****** yst Tim Malloy said in a release.
Since winning the Senate seat long held by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.) back in 2022, Fetterman has often voted with Republicans on Capitol Hill and has been critical of his party at points.
