When the Arizona Cardinals waived Trey Benson with an injury designation on Monday, Aug. 24, it earned them unwanted admission into a dubious club.
Twenty-eight months after they entered the NFL, 96 of the first 100 picks in the 2024 draft remain on active rosters. Benson, now, is among the four castaways — until and unless he gets scooped up elsewhere.
The three others: Ja'Lynn Polk, a second-round wide receiver who finished his rookie season with 12 catches and missed all of his second season with injuries before retiring; Jermaine Burton, a third-round wide receiver who developed a habit of missing practices and was involved in a domestic dispute; and Terrion Arnold, who currently faces the possibility of life in prison on kidnapping and robbery charges.
That is the company Benson currently holds. But most concerningly, he's not alone. For the Cardinals, this may just be the beginning of a week-long purge of former top draft picks.
In that same 2024 draft, the Cardinals selected cornerback Elijah Jones with the 90th pick. They seem to have five roster locks at cornerback, meaning Jones could be competing with Starling Thomas V for one roster spot. If that's the case, Thomas would seem to have the inside edge, despite a poor preseason. He was a reliable contributor in 2024 — something Jones has never been — and may need more time to return to full strength after a torn ACL last July.

While it seems that Democrats and Republicans can't agree on much of anything these days, there's at least one common enemy that's bringing both sides of the aisle together: data centers. Representatives on both sides of the aisle are increasingly pushing back against hyperscalers who are developing massive data center campuses on local energy grids, driving up energy demand and therefore causing electricity prices to skyrocket for everyone, whether they benefit from the artificial intelligence boom or not.
The Trump administration has attempted to resolve the issue by pushing the tech sector to provide its own energy sources to power its rapidly proliferating data centers. But while the legislation ostensibly pushes the responsibility of energy buildout – and the money to support it – back onto the tech firms responsible for skyrocketing energy demand rates in the first place, there is some concern that the policy may yield some considerable and costly unintended consequences.
Trump "essentially envisions a bespoke new power system built in parallel to the existing one," argues a recent op-ed from the energy editor of non-partisan news outlet Semafor. By inviting Big Tech to build its own energy infrastructure, policymakers are inviting the private sector to create a shadow grid that operates outside of the regulations that govern our standard electricity grids, and the oversight mechanisms that ensure compliance with other policy measures, such as environmental protections.
Plus, by encouraging Big Tech to invest in its own energy infrastructure, the country is missing out on a major opportunity to encourage much-needed investment in its own aging grid at a time when more resilience and greater transmission infrastructure is sorely needed. "Most of today's cost pressure is coming from transmission, distribution, and system readiness, not energy supply," Brandon Owens, a grid expert and founder of advisory platform AIxEnergy, was quoted by Politico last week. "Those costs remain even if a data center self-supplies generation."
Despite these concerns, Big Tech is pushing ahead with some truly gargantuan energy infrastructure projects, most of which are being developed in tandem with sprawling data center campuses. Amazon is currently building a gas-fired power plant in Texas that is set to become the single-biggest source of power-related emissions in the entire United States. And just this week, Nvidia announced that it would team up with ****** an's SoftBank and the United States government to build the country's largest fossil-fuel plant to power an OpenAI project in Ohio.

Tit-for-tat attacks by Russia and Ukraine, both major grain exporters, on ports and vessels in recent weeks have shuttered grain terminals and forced shippers to delay or cancel loadings for dozens of cargoes during the peak export season.
"Measures have been identified and will be further developed, ensuring that all grain intended for export is shipped on time and in full," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
President Vladimir Putin acknowledged last week that Russia was experiencing problems with its agricultural exports, but said it would resolve them. The Kremlin chief also pledged that there would be no shortages on global markets.
Russia would have about 60 million tons of grain for export in the current season, Putin estimated. Russian grain exports are expected to pick up to 2.2 million metric tons in August from 1.95 million in July, the Sovecon consultancy said.

From acting and music to memorable red carpet appearances, Sofia Carson has created a career that crosses several corners of entertainment. Aug 19 (Reuters) - Moderna shares more than doubled on Wednesday, adding about $30 billion to its market value, after promising late-stage data on its personalized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Merck sent investors piling into the stock.
The therapy is central to Moderna's efforts to prove that its mRNA technology can succeed beyond its COVID-19 vaccine franchise and infectious disease shots, as it seeks to build a more durable revenue base. The company recently added a flu vaccine to its portfolio and is advancing experimental vaccines for conditions including norovirus and Lyme disease.
Analysts had noted the cancer vaccine data could be an important catalyst for the company and potentially strengthen investor sentiment.
"A successful trial gives investors stronger evidence that mRNA technology can have a meaningful future beyond infectious diseases," said Lale Akoner, global market strategist for eToro.

Good morning. Stocks turned higher at the open, but tech stocks resumed their sell-off from yesterday. While the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell in early trading, the Dow (^DJI) and S&P 500 (^GSPC) were buoyed by falling bond yields after the US Treasury Department stepped in to support buybacks of long-dated securities.

The tech sector (XLK) faced renewed selling pressure as semiconductor stocks continued to slide, led by declines in shares of Intel (INTC), AMD (AMD), and Broadcom (AVGO).
On the other end of the spectrum, Healthcare (XLV) saw tremendous strength, driven by a 124% gain in Moderna (MRNA) following positive phase 3 trial results for its melanoma vaccine developed with Merck (MRK).
Basic Materials (XLB) also led the morning, as a surge in gold futures (GC=F) and gold miner stocks broadly rose.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have developed their team over the decades via the usual ways most teams in the NBA have, finding special success through the NBA draft since their founding as the Seattle SuperSonics. A teenager from County Down hopes an app he has developed will revolutionise how farms are run, giving hard-pressed farmers more time.
Ben O'Connor, 16, was inspired when his family's farm near Castlewellan moved from beef to a dairy operation.
That meant longer hours, strict routine and more tasks to schedule, all of which reduced the time his family had together.
The entrepreneur had previously developed a mail order gift business at the age of 13. After selling that last year, he turned his talents to managing farm tasks.
FarmFlow is now being trialled on several farms across the UK and Ireland. He hopes to roll out the app, which targets the farm paperwork burden, alongside his studies.

On August 17, Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) agreed to guarantee up to $105 billion to help OpenAI lease a massive data center in Pike County, Ohio, being developed by SoftBank-owned SB Energy. The site could reach 8 gigawatts of capacity, with the first 800 megawatts due online in 2028, and OpenAI has signed on for 20 years. Nvidia will also put $1.5 billion directly into SB Energy and will be the facility's exclusive chip supplier. It's the latest example of the company financing the very infrastructure that runs its own chips, a habit that keeps expanding even as it keeps drawing scrutiny.
The idea behind the guarantee is that Nvidia is using its balance sheet to lock up long-lived sites where its chips can run across multiple hardware generations, and the numbers behind that bet keep climbing. Revenue growth is expected to accelerate toward 97% this quarter, up from 85% the quarter before, as the company rolls out its new Rubin platform. Jensen Huang has floated $1 trillion in combined revenue across 2026 and 2027, which implies roughly $600 billion in fiscal 2028 alone. Demand isn't limited to hyperscalers, either.
SpaceX has said it will build its AI infrastructure exclusively on Nvidia chips, targeting 10 gigawatts of compute by the end of 2027, a build-out estimated to cost $150 billion to $250 billion. Add in the four largest hyperscalers, expected to spend roughly $700 billion on AI chips this year, plus a possible OpenAI or Anthropic IPO that could free up even more capital, and the picture is a company still early in monetizing an entire computing shift. The Ohio guarantee, paired with the $500 billion financing consortium Nvidia formed with six major financial institutions the week before, fits that same playbook: widen the pool of customers locked into its hardware so no single client's slowdown can shake the business.
The obvious pushback is circularity. Nvidia is effectively helping fund a customer's ability to buy Nvidia chips, first through the $500 billion consortium with BlackRock, Blackstone, KKR, Apollo, Brookfield and Goldman Sachs, and now through a direct guarantee tied to OpenAI's Ohio lease. Huang insists this isn't circular financing, but the plan to securitize AI infrastructure into a tradable ******* et class invites comparisons to how mortgage pools were packaged before 2008. Nvidia's exposure here isn't unlimited. It covers a portion of lease and power payments and a minimum-value commitment on the site, not the full $105 billion or all of OpenAI's obligations. But if OpenAI defaults, Nvidia still absorbs the difference between that floor value and whatever the site fetches if it's re-leased or sold.
