A laptop arrived late. What was on it made things worse. And now Apple is asking a federal court to move faster, arguing that evidence in its lawsuit against OpenAI is being actively destroyed.
Apple filed a new brief on Aug. 31, escalating its legal battle against the ChatGPT maker. The filing accuses OpenAI of withholding key evidence and alleges that a former Apple engineer sent instructions to an OpenAI colleague to destroy documents. The colleague confirmed she would comply, Bloomberg reported.
The brief was filed Monday, Aug. 31, in support of Apple's motion for expedited pretrial fact-finding in its trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI.
Apple's lawyers said OpenAI only recently provided a critical piece of evidence: an Apple-issued MacBook that former engineer Chang Liu had been using since leaving the company.
Initial forensic ****** ysis of the laptop found that Liu and colleagues at OpenAI "were well aware" of his continued unauthorized access to Apple's third-party cloud storage providers. The filing alleges Liu also "sent instructions for destroying evidence to an OpenAI colleague who confirmed she would comply."

An American Airlines flight landed safely in Dallas after a laptop battery caught fire on board, prompting flight attendants to contain the fire and emergency personnel to meet the aircraft, officials confirmed to Fox News Digital.
American Airlines Flight 2398 was approaching Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Friday after departing Atlanta when the crew reported a laptop battery fire, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Flight attendants contained the fire with a thermal containment bag, the FAA said.
The Airbus A321 landed safely at DFW at about 6:55 p.m. local time, according to the agency. The FAA is investigating the incident.

Aug 9 (Reuters) - Apple has been testing memory chips from China's ‌CXMT across product lines including ‌iPhones and MacBooks, to mitigate a component shortage fueled by the AI boom, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
Apple held early talks with CXMT, which ‌is China's ⁠largest chipmaker by market value, about supplying components with ⁠the goal of using them in some devices sold in China, the report said, citing people familiar with the ‌matter.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Apple and CXMT did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Reuters had earlier exclusively reported that CXMT was considering ‌building a second memory-chip plant in Beijing to boost production.
Laptop makers HP and ‌Acer have started using CXMT memory chips in devices sold outside the U.S. to ease supply shortages, the ‌newspaper said.

Federal agents seized the mobile phone and computer of Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter last September in a wide-ranging probe into the financial dealings of the billionaire's businesses, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Federal Bureau of Investigation carried out a search warrant aboard a private plane at a Chicago airport where Walter was traveling, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The FBI's Chicago field office confirmed that it executed a court-authorized search for a mobile phone and laptop on an aircraft at Midway International Airport on Sept. 18 but declined to comment further.

SINGAPORE, July 24 (Reuters) - For months, Chinese chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) had been hiking prices on Huawei, one of the country's biggest technology companies. The chipmaker held firm when Huawei demanded relief from the escalating costs, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The standoff came to a head on CXMT's factory floor in June. A group of engineers from a chipmaking-equipment vendor with deep strategic ties to Huawei had been working in the cleanrooms at CXMT's core research and development zone in Hefei, Anhui province. Without warning, CXMT ordered the engineers, who had been helping with equipment maintenance, to pack their tools and ‌leave the factory floor immediately, the two sources said.
Executives at the Huawei-connected equipment vendor, SiCarrier, concluded the confrontation was the result of the power struggle between CXMT and Huawei, the people told Reuters. The companies still do business but the engineers haven't been allowed back into the R&D zone, the two people said.
CXMT, Huawei and SiCarrier didn't ‌respond to questions about the incident.
The clash illustrates the changing dynamics of China's semiconductor industry. CXMT has risen to become the world's fourth-biggest maker of memory, including the DRAM variety used in smartphones, laptops and servers. Now, the company is powerful enough to charge prices even Huawei can't stomach.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A distinguished American marine biologist has been shot dead by three men who entered his house in the central Philippines, police said on Tuesday.
Kent Carpenter, 73, was with his Filipina companion in a house in the coastal town of Sibulan, in Negros Oriental province, on Sunday night when the masked men forced their way in.
One drew a gun and shot Carpenter in the head, killing him instantly, police said his companion told them. The men took a laptop, an unspecified amount of cash and a backpack before fleeing, national police spokesperson Col. Allen Rae Co told reporters.
Regional police spokesperson Lt. Col. Joem Malong told The **** ociated Press that Carpenter's companion sustained unspecified injuries and was being treated. Investigators were trying to determine the motive for the killing and identify the attackers.

Brown University economics professor Roberto Serrano criticized his school on Sunday for its slow response to a massive artificial intelligence (AI) cheating scandal among his students earlier this year.
In an op-ed for The Free Press, Serrano recounted that he announced that after a deadly shooting took place on campus in December, he opted to move his in-class midterm and final exam to an online, take-home format for the upcoming semester. As a result, he saw his course enrollment jump to 86 students, beating the course's previous record of 30 students enrolled at one time.
Serrano reported that the average grade of the online midterm was 96, significantly higher than the previous years' average of between 65 and 80. He also found that 40 students achieved a perfect score and detected answers that resembled responses provided by ChatGPT.

I regret to inform you that U.S. Customs and Border Control (CBP) agents can search your phone, laptop, GPS system, smartwatch, or other electronic devices for virtually no reason. No particular suspicion of criminal activity is needed. No probable cause. No warrant.
At "the physical border, the functional equivalent of the border" (such as an incoming or outgoing flight at an international airport), or "the extended border," border policy is to allow device searches "with or without suspicion."
Wilmer Chavarria is trying to change this. The Vermont-based school superintendent is suing the Department of Homeland Security, arguing that his 4th Amendment rights were violated when border agents searched his personal and work devices as he was traveling back to the U.S. after visiting family in Nicaragua.
You may be surprised to learn just how expansive border policies around electronic device searches are.
According to a January 2026 policy directive, CBP agents can search "any device that may contain information in an electronic or digital form, such as computers, tablets, disks, drives, tapes, flash drives, SIM cards, global positioning systems, unmanned aircraft systems, vehicle infotainment systems, smart watches, mobile phones and other communication devices, cameras, music and other media players." If you're entering the country, exiting the country, or within 100 miles of a border, it's fair game.

On June 30th, Conduent Incorporated (NASDAQ:CNDT) announced that it was selling its tolling business to a Canadian firm for a $70 million price tag. The deal is expected to close before the end of this year and the firm's CEO outlined that it was part of his firm's effort to simplify its business and focus on core operations.
