DUBAI, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Six months after the airstrikes that began the war and propelled a badly wounded Mojtaba Khamenei into the role of Iran's supreme leader, he remains entirely unseen and unheard by Iranians — a vacuum at the heart of his country's leadership.
Questions over his condition and role are growing increasingly fraught, with Iran facing critical ‌decisions over a war that has set the Middle East aflame while trashing the country's already fragile economy.
Iranian officials and other senior sources in the country say Khamenei remains in control, ruling ‌from the shadows for security reasons as he recovers from disfiguring wounds while delegating broad daily authority to a coterie of top figures.
But with no photograph, video or audio message released since his appointment a week into the war, Iranians are ever more sceptical about his position in an Islamic Republic in which the leader's voice is meant to be absolute.

An unnamed Premier League club are preparing a concrete offer in a bid to secure the services of OGC Nice's Melvin Bard (25), according to information from Foot Mercato.
A key figure in Les Aiglons' dressing room, the left-back – who can also play as a wing-back – was notably targeted by AFC Sunderland last summer. And whilst his contract runs until 2028, Nice's management are reportedly unwilling to let him go for less than €10m.
Having come through the ranks at Olympique Lyonnais' academy, Bard joined the Côte d'Azur side in the summer of 2021 for a fee of €3m. Since then, the Écully-born player has established himself as a regular starter for the red and black side, and has now made nearly 192 appearances for OGCN.

Elye Wahi touched down in Nice late last night ahead of his loan move to Le Gym from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Ivory Coast international also spent last season on loan at OGC Nice.
Fans gathered at Nice Airport late on Sunday night to welcome Wahi. The former Olympique de Marseille, RC Lens, and Montpellier HSC forward spent the second half of last season on loan at the Allianz Riviera. It was his goals that ultimately kept the club in Ligue 1. After netting in the promotion/ relegation playoff against AS Saint-Étienne, keeping Nice in the top flight, Wahi gave an interview in which he was very emotional and grateful to the club.
However, due to Nice's finances, it was not possible to include a buy option. Another loan move would be beyond Nice, it was thought, however, they have succeeded in reaching an agreement with their German counterparts. Wahi has arrived on the Côte d'Azur ahead of his medical. This time, his loan will include a buy option valued at €15m, Nice-Matin understands.
Speaking in a press conference attended by Get French Football News on Saturday night, following a 0-0 draw against FC Lorient, Olivier Pantaloni said that he was "impatient to have a signing" in attack. He added that he would be having talks with his superiors to understand the status of any deal(s). And just hours later, Wahi is in Nice and expected to complete a return.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Locomotive FC extended their win-streak to four games with a 1-0 road win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday night, August 22.
The locos won the match in entirely opposite fashion to last week's dominant 3-0 road win over San Antonio FC, in which they scored all three goals in the first half. Against the switchbacks, the the 0-0 deadlock was not broken until minute 85 by an own-goal from Switchbacks' defender Jabari De Coteau.
With the victory, the Locos climbed to a three-way tie with New Mexico United and Orange County SC, atop the USL Championship's Western Conference standings. with 34 points.
The Locos have also now won five out of their last six matches, with 5 clean sheets during that span.
They will return home for back-to-back matches at Southwest University Park next week on Wednesday and Saturday night.

LEXINGTON – It took three weeks longer than expected to complete the 93rd News Journal Tennis Tournament, but once action resumed Jake Chilcote – or should we say, Mr. Tiebreaker – simply picked up where he left off.
He beat former Lexington High School teammate and 2024 champ Ethan Remy 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 for the men's singles ***** le Saturday at Lakewood Racquet Club.
Since Nicky Wong capped his four-year reign in 2022, there have been four different champions over the last four years. There was Justin Csepe in 2023, Remy in 2024 and Dylan Catanese in 2025, paving the way for Chilcote's run to the championship this summer.
No one can say he didn't earn it.
Chilcote's last three wins in the tournament were all decided by 10-point tiebreakers. He went the distance – first to 10 points by two in a decisive mini-set – to beat former champ Alex "Bones" McCann in the quarterfinals and again in the semis against 2024 finalist Cooper Remy, Ethan's younger brother.

It may have taken decades, but Heather Locklear and Lorenzo Lamas have finally fallen into one another's arms. Sadly, love doesn't pay the bills, which is something Lamas, who rose to fame starring in nine seasons of "Falcon Crest" and five seasons of "Renegade," needed to learn the hard way. On Thursday, the New York-based private equity firm, which makes investments in government-adjacent and regulated industries, agreed to acquire Texas-based Saber Power Services, marking its third acquisition announcement in less than a week.
Days earlier, it agreed to acquire federal contractor Steampunk and environmental consultancy Trinity Consultants, and submitted a 914 pence-per-share proposal for London-listed Bodycote, valuing the industrial services company's equity at about £1.56 billion ($2.1 billion).
The bid places Veritas in a takeover contest with CVC Capital Partners, which proposed 915 pence per share. The bidders face a Sept. 2 deadline.
This dealmaking spree followed Veritas's July agreement to buy facilities management and engineering business BGIS.

Demi Vollering raced clear to win stage eight of the Tour de France Femmes and ***** the leader's yellow jersey with just one stage remaining.
The race lead has changed hands for the second day running, with Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney having won on Mont Ventoux to replace Marlen Reusser at the top of the general classification.
That gave the Polish Canyon-SRAM rider a 15-second lead over Vollering heading into Saturday's penultimate stage, a mostly flat 171.9km ride from Sisteron to Nice.
It was the longest stage of this year's race and looked set to suit the sprinters, but they were dropped on the Cote de la Ginestiere - the final climb of the day - about 8km from the finish.
Dutch FDJ-Suez rider Vollering then attacked in a bid to drop Niewiadoma-Phinney and Elisa Longo Borghini, and went clear right before she crested the final climb, with 6km to the finish.

With the LIV Golf Tour hanging on by a thread, Bryson DeChambeau hosted a players only meeting to discuss the future of the league. The meeting took place subsequently after LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil and other executives met with the captains of the LIV Golf teams. While few players commented on the happenings, there are some indicators.
Richard Bland said, "Bryson just ran through what he knows, and obviously, we're trying to do it as a group, but we're individuals as well, so I think the next two to three weeks is going to be where it's at. We're in this together; we're fully backing Scott. I think probably in the next two to three weeks we'll have a bigger picture. We're just in that kind of stage at the minute that we're positive with what's going on, but we just need everything to be fully signed off so you can go forward."
LIV Golf has yet to confirm if their Team Championship will occur as scheduled at The Cardinal in Plymouth, Michigan on August 27th-30th. The preparations for the event still need completion, which is unusual. It seems unlikely they will be finished.

Originally set for Monday night at the high school courts, the **** le match has been postponed until Saturday, August 22, time TBA. Chilcote is having his wisdom teeth pulled Monday and Remy is flying back to New York, where he has been working this summer at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.
Both of them played four matches, singles and doubles, on Sunday, so squeezing in the championship bout that night was not a realistic option.

Wood Mackenzie now estimates that the global upstream oil and gas sector could generate $495 billion in free cash flow in 2026 if crude averages $90 per barrel, more than doubling its previous forecast based on a $60 oil price **** umption. The revision follows the sharp jump in crude prices triggered by the Middle East conflict, turning what had been expected to be another year of disciplined cash generation into one of the industry's most lucrative windfalls in recent years. Yet the gains will be concentrated among the world's largest producers, with the 49 national and international oil companies covered by Wood Mackenzie expected to capture $272 billion of the total.
Wood Mackenzie expects the conflict to reduce global oil production by at least 3%, with Iraq accounting for roughly 3 million barrels per day of lost output, while damage to infrastructure in Qatar is projected to cut global LNG supply by 2%. The stronger cash flow outlook does not alter the industry's longer-term production trajectory. Wood Mackenzie projects average production across the 155 upstream companies it tracks will fall 30% between 2030 and 2040, with more than 70 producers facing declines of more than 50% unless they make significant new investments.
However, WoodMac says energy companies are likely to maintain capital discipline despite the unexpected influx of cash, with capex budgets expected to largely remain flat while share buybacks are projected to decrease by 5% as boards prioritize balance sheet strength and deleveraging.

Eni raised its 2026 oil and gas production outlook and expanded its share buyback program after reporting significantly stronger second-quarter results, supported by double-digit production growth, higher commodity prices and improved performance across several business segments.
The Italian energy company now expects underlying full-year hydrocarbon production growth of around 5%, up from its previous guidance of 3% to 4%, following 11% year-over-year underlying production growth in the second quarter to 1.79 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, excluding price effects.
The improved outlook prompted Eni to increase its planned 2026 share repurchase program to €3.4 billion, up from the previously revised €2.8 billion, while reaffirming its planned dividend of €1.10 per share. The company also said an extraordinary dividend could be considered later this year if refining margins remain well above budget ****** umptions.
Second-quarter adjusted EBIT more than doubled year over year to €5.38 billion, while adjusted net profit rose to €2.3 billion. The upstream business generated €4.77 billion in adjusted EBIT, benefiting from higher production, favorable oil realizations and continued cost discipline. Strategically, Eni continued expanding its upstream portfolio and transition businesses. During the quarter it established the Searah joint venture with Petronas, creating a regional platform spanning Indonesia and Malaysia that will develop major gas discoveries in the Kutei Basin. The company also approved final investment decisions for the Baleine Phase 3 development offshore Côte d'Ivoire, the Greater PAJ project offshore Angola, and the Cronos gas project offshore Cyprus.

Multiple French reports suggest Randal Kolo Muani will fly out over the next 48 hours to join Juventus, after they finally agreed a mandatory purchase option with Paris Saint-Germain.
The matter has been dragging on since the moment he first arrived on loan in January 2025, but when they failed to work out a permanent agreement that summer, he was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur instead.

English wine business MDCV UK has taken a stake in the UK-based French rosé producer Après Provence.
The size of the stake was not disclosed, nor were the financial terms of the deal.
Alongside the investment, MDCV UK said in a statement that it will **** ume control of production and UK distribution of the Après Provence brand under a four-year contract.
MDCV UK told Just Drinks it has "always worked alongside Après to oversee the production". It said it has also "always collaborated on distribution" although now the business "will take over this exclusively".
Launched last year, Après Provence sells its Côtes de Provence rosé wine in the UK market, and has seen "rapid growth, securing listings across premium hospitality and retail channels", according to the statement from MDCV UK.

Former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who also held gold at 145 pounds, returned to the Octagon after a five-year absence atop the UFC 329 fight card last Sat. night (July 11, 2026) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, his first MMA fight since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 back in summer 2021.
Max Holloway won the fight, but McGregor is the one who did most of the damage.
Their welterweight main event was over in just 69 seconds, thanks to a self-inflicted knee injury suffered by McGregor. Unfortunately, it happens at this level of competition. Tom Aspinall suffered a similar injury against Curtis Blaydes at UFC London and Patrick Cote blew out his knee against Anderson Silva at UFC 90.
That said, McGregor is held to a different standard.

Erling Haaland has once again pushed all the pressure on to an opponent as Norway get set to face England in the World Cup Round of 16 in Miami on Saturday (5 p.m. ET; Fox).
England are ranked fourth in the FIFA rankings, while Norway are 19th. The Three Lions reached the quarterfinals in Qatar four years ago and have finished as runners-up in each of the past two European Championships. The Round of 16 matchup will provide another difficult test for Haaland and company after knocking off Côte d'Ivoire and Brazil to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time ever at a World Cup.
Even with Haaland, currently solo second in the Golden Boot race on seven goals, and Martin Ødegaard, tied for third with three ***** ists, leading the way, Norway's talisman still sees his side with long odds at lifting the World Cup trophy on July 19 in New Jersey.
"Really low, still," Haaland said. "I think there's some clear favorites out there, England's one of them. I think all of you [reporters] should put every single pressure on the English lads," he said with a laugh.

The amended credit facility comes with an accordion feature of up to $250 million that allows IAMGOLD to further increase available liquidity, subject to lender approval. The much bigger credit facility will strengthen the company's financial position while also lowering its cost of capital. In addition, it should provide meaningful flexibility as the mining giant advances its operating portfolio and pursues internal growth opportunities.
The strengthening of the financial position comes on the heels of IAMGOLD Corporation announcing 12% increase in mineral resources at its Côté Gold Mine in Ontario, Canada. The updated mineral resource now shows 20.3 million ounces of gold in measured and indicated categories.

He wasn’t trusting enough of enough players, and in the end, Everton suffered because of it, as fatigue and the general wear and tear after the rigours of a long Premier League season came back to bite key performers such as Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in that dismal run-in.
There’s two ways to look at it: Either it was all on Moyes, or some (or even most) of the players brought in last summer simply weren’t ready to make an impact. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but at the end of the day, it’s a manager’s job to get them ready over the course of a campaign.
Big pre-seasons are needed from the likes of Tyler Dibling, Merlin Röhl and Harrison Armstrong, while Adam Aznou needs to be sent out on loan as soon as possible to get regular minutes, but Everton’s two new additions suggest that for all the frustrations with Moyes’ squad management, promising young players are still open to working under the Scot.

Moisés Caicedo’s first game as the official captain of the Ecuador national football team did not turn out the way he would have wanted to, coming out on the losing end of a 2-0 defeat against Mexico, who thus advance to the Round of 16. Ecuador are going home, earlier than they would have liked and earlier than most were expecting.
It was the battle of El Tri against La Tri on yet another famous World Cup night at the Azteca in Mexico City, giving the host nation massive home field advantage, which they gleefully utilized to crush, demoralize, and frustrate their opposition. It was perhaps ironic that Mexico’s first goal — a simple counter and thunderous finish — came after Ecuador weathered the early storm and started to gain a foothold in the game, but the second not long after was certainly in line with the overall flow of the game. And Raúl Jiménez being the scorer just added to the emotion of the moment.
That said, the game lacked for great chances or much glorious attacking football, but Mexico took their moments and Ecuador offered very little even as we headed deeper and deeper into the second half. As good as their defense may be, with such a low-scoring offense, they were always going to find it tough to come back. Defense may win championships, but it does help to also score sometimes.
So, it’s to the beach for Captain Caicedo (and for Kendry Páez, who did finally get to play a few minutes at the World Cup: just enough to get a yellow as Ecuador’s discipline crumbled completely at the end). See you back at Cobham soon, Moi!
