Team Wisco and general manager Gord Ash didn't go with perhaps the obvious choice in making the first pick of the Milwaukee Brewers Alumni Legends Game, a selection made at the Saint Kate hotel in downtown Milwaukee on July 23.
A fleet of former Brewers players will be on hand at American Family Field for a three-inning alumni showcase July 24, following the Brewers' regularly scheduled game against the Colorado Rockies, which starts at 3:10 p.m. CT. Former Brewers general manager Doug Melvin (Team Milwaukee) and his top **** istant, Ash (Team Wisco), selected the teams a day in advance, with former coaches Garth Iorg (Team Wisco) and Ed Sedar (Team Milwaukee) serving as managers.
Ryan Braun was on the board, but Ash went with a player he called "the former Ohtani" in selecting Yovani Gallardo, the ex-Brewers standout pitcher who could also hit a little bit during his tenure with the Brewers from 2007-2014, with 12 career home runs.
With the chance to draft six position players, two catchers and seven pitchers, there's a boatload of value in a pitcher who can do a little work in the field. A later-round pick for Brooks Kieschnick demonstrated further how much Ash had this in mind.
Melvin and Sedar quickly snapped Braun up with their first-round pick. "I'm going to have to tell him the game's only three innings," Melvin said. "He didn't start hitting in the clutch until the seventh, eighth and ninth inning, so I'm a little worried."

In a statement, "Today" tells Access Hollywood there was no altercation and no one was injured. TMZ reports that the alleged intruder was attempting to locate Al Roker when he allegedly confronted Melvin instead. Around 15 minutes after the encounter, both Roker and Melvin appeared on the third hour of "Today" and didn't show any signs of distress.

Chelsea are in advanced talks over a transfer for Manchester United forward Melvine Malard.
Talks are taking place between the clubs over a deal which would be worth in the region of £850,000 plus add-ons, with personal terms not expected to be an issue.
It would represent a club-record sale for United and the highest fee a women’s club has received for a player with a year left on their contract.
The 26-year-old is entering the final year of her contract and it had become increasingly clear that an agreement over renewed terms would not be reached.
United were keen to not lose a high-value player on a free transfer having done so in previous windows when Alessia Russo and Mary Earps both left the club.

Former President Barack Obama blamed a splintered media landscape for the lack of a second Obama-like political figure emerging on the national stage during an interview on Tuesday.
NBC "Today" co-host Craig Melvin talked to the former president about the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on his "Glass Half Full" podcast and told him, "You've always represented a lot of different communities, but there has always been this singularity to your story. Earlier this week, one of your former aides was talking on one of these cable shows and said Democrats should stop looking for Obama 2.0. Not gonna happen."
"Do you think in the current climate that someone like you with your background and your story, do you think that you could break through now the same way you did back in '07, '08?" Melvin asked Obama.
"I do think it's harder because of the nature of your business, the media, it's more splintered," Obama said.
