NEW YORK — The same Yankees saga has been playing out all season:
Every time one or two players are ready to come off the injured list, someone else gets hurt.
Manager Aaron Boone's Wednesday pre-game news conference included good and bad updates, then his post-game session ended with a big dose of ugly that had nothing to do with rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr.'s bobble for a fifth game in a row with an error.
Following the Yankees' 9-3 win over the Astros, Boone shared the imaging results for reliever Fernando Cruz, who went on the 15-day IL earlier in the day with right elbow discomfort.
Yankees -1.5 run line is listed at +128 on FanDuel for Thursday night's game against the Astros. Our complete FanDuel Sportsbook review will show you how to navigate through their app.

NEW YORK — Defense is supposed to be George Lombard Jr.'s superpower, but the Yankees rookie is in the midst of a serious fielding slump.
The shortstop now has six errors in six consecutive games after booting a ground ball in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Astros. The bizarre streak continued on a bizarre play in the eighth inning, as Lombard, on the run, bounced the ball to and nearly collided with third baseman José Caballero, who then committed an error of his own when he airmailed a throw to first.
While it was Caballero's throw that allowed a run to score, it was Lombard's half of the play that drew attention after yet another mishap. Afterward, the frustrated 21-year-old acknowledged that he needs to "clean up" his defense, especially with the Yankees trying to catch the Rays for the division lead and fend off the incoming Red Sox for the American League's top Wild Card spot.
"I don't know. It's something you're trying to figure out," Lombard, who made just one error in his first 14 MLB games, said when asked why he's had such a tough time in the field lately. "Obviously, it's not acceptable. Can't happen at this level. If you make your pitchers have to get extra outs, it just makes it way harder on us."
Meanwhile, Aaron Boone said, "I don't think so" when asked if Lombard, who has played everyday since debuting on Aug. 4, could benefit from a day off. Instead, the manager said that he has "total confidence" that Lombard will put this unusual stretch "in the rearview mirror."

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the toughest opponent on their 2026 preseason schedule when they take on the Seattle Seahawks at Arrowhead Stadium this evening.
Fresh off a victory in Super Bowl LX, the Seahawks are among the NFL's best teams and should prove to be a formidable opponent for the Chiefs to face in Kansas City's preseason finale.
This week, Chiefs Wire sat down with Kole Musgrove of Seahawks Wire to get the inside scoop on Seattle ahead of today's game.
Take a look at Musgrove's answers to our top questions:
"I'm not sure if "improved" is the right word here… I prefer 'maintained.' Yes, Seattle lost their Super Bowl MVP (as y'all are aware!), but they managed to keep so many core, foundational pieces of their roster. Guys like Rashid Shaheed, Derick Hall, and keeping DeMarcus Lawrence around for his final season in 2026. Yes, stars get you over the championship hump, but an incredibly deep roster of quality players is what gets you to compete for the Lombardi. Seattle also managed to flawlessly draft the immediate replacements for Kenneth Walker, Riq Woolen, and Coby Bryant… although with Bud Clark out, they have a new pressing need at safety. The Seahawks are bringing back their offensive and defensive lines intact, their top four pass catchers, and most of their coaching staff with the exception of Klint Kubiak. Seattle is as geared up as any Super Bowl champion I can think of to be able to repeat."

The Yankees dropped their series with the Astros after a futile offensive performance on Thursday.
But it's the defense of their rookie shortstop that has raised eyebrows.
George Lombard Jr.'s defense was touted as "major league ready" for awhile and he showed that when he was first called up to the big leagues. However, he made his seventh error of the season Thursday. Of those seven, he's made one error in at least six straight games.
The defensive misplay occurred in the eighth with the Astros up 4-1. Yainer Diaz hit a roller to the left side that both Jose Caballero and Lombard charged at. The third baseman gave way to Lombard, who booted it. The ball was hit to Caballero, who tried to throw out the runner and end the inning, but it sailed.
"I don't know [what's going on], it's something I'm trying to figure out," Lombard said after the loss. "It's not acceptable, can't happen at this level. If you make your pitchers get extra outs and makes it way harder on us. Teams will definitely capitalize. It's something I have to clean up and I'll be better tomorrow."

NEW YORK (AP) — Christian Walker had three hits, including a two-run homer off Gerrit Cole in the sixth inning, and Jeremy Peña added a solo shot to power the Houston Astros to a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Thursday night.
Astros starter Hayden Wesneski (4-1) allowed one run and three hits in five-plus innings against the team that drafted him in 2019 and traded him to the Chicago Cubs in 2022 for reliever Scott Effross.
Houston (67-67) took two of three at Yankee Stadium and leads the AL West by one game over Texas.
Walker broke an 0-for-11 skid with a single in the second and homered on Cole's 1-0 curveball for a 3-0 lead in the fifth. He doubled off Justin Topa in the eighth and scored when the Yankees committed two errors on one play.
Yainer Diaz's grounder caromed off George Lombard Jr.'s glove for the rookie shortstop's seventh error in 20 career games. The ball ricocheted to third baseman José Caballero and he was charged with a throwing error for his wild toss to first as Walker scored Houston's fifth run.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts did not hold back when reflecting on a "tough" loss to the Atlanta Braves.
Over the Dodgers' current dynasty, the team has been known for playing good to even great defense, making minimal mental mistakes, and delivering in big moments.
From the end of the 2010s and the start of the 2020s, the Dodgers **** erted their dominance numerically over the regular season, but over the last few years, they have taken their foot off the gas and pushed themselves in a grittier direction.
This change has paid dividends as they have relied on better starting pitching and experienced players, helping them play a tighter brand of baseball.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are not content to rest on their laurels.
We know this because they have the second-most starters returning from a championship team in the last 15 years. It would be natural for basically the same group of players and coaches to have the same exact ambition: Continuing what they started with February's Lombardi Trophy victory and going for the legendary repeat.
We also know the Seahawks are not content to sit back based on the money they've thrown around this offseason, and even dating back to last summer. Seattle has spent so much money on key members of its current championship core for the foreseeable future that you almost wonder whether the currency they're using is actually Monopoly money. Where does it keep coming from? Oh right, the Seahawks have the Park Place and Boardwalk squares, as well as all the railroads.
With the Thursday news that the Seahawks had extended All-Pro defensive lineman Leonard Williams to a three-year, $90 million contract (with $56 million guaranteed), their plan for the rest of the decade is in full focus. The Seahawks clearly believe they can wring out another championship or two with the current make-up of their team (they are probably correct), because why else would they throw out $634 million in new contracts over the last calendar year? For the fun of it? C'mon now. By total guaranteed money, the recent extensions awarded over just the last several weeks to Williams, star cornerback Devon Witherspoon, and arguably the NFL's best receiver in Jaxon Smith-Njigba come out to over $273 million.
That's, uh, a lot of cheddar. Let's put it this way: If the Seahawks didn't think they could wrack up a dynasty of sorts, they wouldn't be handing out proverbial blank checks like this all at once. (Note: It would also be a lot harder to spend this money if quarterback Sam Darnold wasn't on such a team-friendly contract. But here we are!)

The preseason finale for the Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers is here, and both teams have made headlines for drastically different things.
The Raiders secured the No. 1 overall pick and drafted quarterback Fernando Mendoza. In limited action, the rookie has at times looked the part, and also has shown there's still a ways to go. That much is evident and has led the Raiders to decide they'll give the QB1 job to Kirk Cousins until Mendoza is ready to go.
When Mendoza is ready to go, however, is anyone's guess. The Raiders are determined to slow-play it with their passer of the future, leading to questions of when the passer will make his Sunday debut this season.
The 49ers have eyes on a Lombardi Trophy once again, but they've had to navigate some off-the-field distractions throughout training camp, an inauspicious start to their season. First, it was Kyle Shanahan's car accident and the questions that persisted. In the month that followed, principal owner Jed York was arrested.
In between, the 49ers lost wide receiver Ricky Pearsall to a knee injury, Mike Evans dealt with ****** ps and bruises and substation conspiracy theories resurfaced.

In the end, Bennett Sousa just wasn't up to the task. Yankees 9 Astros 3.
The Astros would once again get on the board first. Isaac Paredes drew a two out walk and scored on a Jose Altuve double. However, the lead was short-lived as in the bottom of the same frame, Ben Rice would hit a solo shot.
The Yankees weren't done. Luis Garcia singled, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Christian Walker. George Lombard Jr brought him in giving the New York their first lead of the night, 2-1.
That remained the score until Daulton Varsho launched his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to center field to tie the game at 2.
In the bottom of the fourth the Yankees were active. Chisholm, Wells, and Caballero each singled which generated a 3-2 lead.

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Roki Sasaki left the game against the Atlanta Braves due to an apparent finger injury.
Sasaki had been struggling without his best stuff before being pulled. He was in the fourth inning, where he had already allowed a run and had two runners on base, one at second and another at third, with one out.
Pitching coach Mark Prior, translator Will Ireton, and the Dodgers trainer examined his hand and called for Sasaki to be pulled.
The Dodgers announced that it was a blister on the middle finger of his right hand.

Jason Goff has a new digital media home.
According to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jeff Agrest, Goff will launch a podcast next Monday with 312 Sports, the Chicago platform anchored by Dan Bernstein and home to his shows Dan Bernstein Unfiltered and the Bears podcast Forward Progress.
The network also carries Organizations Win Championships and From the 50, rounding out a lineup built around local, opinion-heavy Chicago sports talk that will soon include Goff. What form his contribution takes with the Hubbard Radio-owned brand remains to be seen, given that Spotify likely retains ownership of his most recent podcast, The Full Go's IP and feed archive.
The Full Go Podcast launched in September 2021 and, over the next four-plus years, grew into one of The Ringer's most distinct voices on the NBA and sports culture at large. Goff hosted mostly solo, holding court on basketball, pop culture, and whatever else happened to be on his mind that day, building a show with its own identity rather than chasing the format of The Ringer's flagship NBA coverage or Bill Simmons' own feed.
That run ended after more than 600 episodes, Goff announced back in March.

It's Week 3 of our series covering the biggest Risers and Fallers in Yahoo ADP. As injuries start to mount, we've got a host of depth chart diamonds (or duds) on the move heading into late August and the heart of fantasy football draft season. For the full context, you can check out the last piece here. Let's get right into it!
Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season
Jonathon Brooks continues to climb his way up drafts (another 10.1 spots this week) as Chuba Hubbard deals with injury (see the Fallers below). Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Tuesday that Brooks and Hubbard will be in a committee to start the season, so Brooks has a chance to capture the lead back role.
A handful of backups or depth RBs have made a push this past week, including Jordan Mason (who I actually like over Aaron Jones Sr. as a draft selection), Braelon Allen (while Breece Hall deals with injury) and MarShawn Lloyd (with Josh Jacobs surrounded by question marks). One other riser I like as a sleeper right now: Texans tight end Dalton Schultz, who has cracked the top 150 on Yahoo and has an underrated chance to be a TE1 and a top target in Houston with Jayden Higgins out for the season.

Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard has been sidelined by a hamstring injury for the last couple of weeks, but the team is not concerned about his absence stretching into the regular season.
Hubbard has been doing rehab work during the team's practices and believes he'd be ready to go if there were a regular season game this week. Head coach Dave Canales didn't go that far, but did say that the team expects he'll be back to face the Bears.
"I think he hit over 20 mph the other day in [return to play], but that's in a controlled setting," Canales said, via the team's website. "And right now we didn't want to put him back out there. He's not ready for someone to pull on his jersey and have him pull through that. But he's ahead of schedule. He's doing a great job."
Jonathon Brooks has gotten more work with Hubbard out of action, which has helped prepare him for the season after missing all of last year while recovering from a torn ACL. Both backs are expected to be part of the plans come September, although it remains to be seen just how Canales will break up the workload.

An unnamed Premier League club are preparing a concrete offer in a bid to secure the services of OGC Nice's Melvin Bard (25), according to information from Foot Mercato.
A key figure in Les Aiglons' dressing room, the left-back – who can also play as a wing-back – was notably targeted by AFC Sunderland last summer. And whilst his contract runs until 2028, Nice's management are reportedly unwilling to let him go for less than €10m.
Having come through the ranks at Olympique Lyonnais' academy, Bard joined the Côte d'Azur side in the summer of 2021 for a fee of €3m. Since then, the Écully-born player has established himself as a regular starter for the red and black side, and has now made nearly 192 appearances for OGCN.
Having been named captain on several occasions in recent months, Bard rounded off his 2025-26 season with 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one ****** ist.

Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz are back in the spotlight after a new report claimed the 64-year-old Hollywood star still looks back on their relationship with regret. According to insiders, Cruise considers Cruz the one who "got away". He had allegedly hoped their romance would end in marriage.
According to the Daily Mail, sources close to Tom Cruise say the actor remains frustrated with his love life as several of his former partners have moved on. The report claims Cruise has struggled to find a lasting relationship in recent years. While he has been linked to several women, none of those romances have reportedly turned into something permanent.
An insider said Cruise would still like to get married again and hopes to find a stable, long-term relationship. However, the report suggests one past romance still stands out above the rest. According to the source, Cruise fell deeply in love with Penélope Cruz after the pair met while filming "Vanilla Sky." The actors dated for a few years before ending their relationship in 2004.
According to the insider, Cruise saw Cruz as the woman he wanted to marry and was devastated when their relationship ended. They added that Cruz ended the relationship because Cruise's level of fame made it difficult for them to have a normal life together. The source added, "She dumped him and he was heartbroken. She was the one who got away." Cruz later married fellow Oscar winner Javier Bardem in 2010, and the couple has remained together ever since.
The Daily Mail report also claims Cruise has found it difficult watching several former partners move on. It mentions Ana de Armas, Katie Holmes, and Nicole Kidman among the actresses whose personal lives have continued making headlines. According to another source, Cruise's demanding career has often made relationships difficult. The insider claimed the actor puts filmmaking above everything else, leaving little room for romance.

NEW YORK (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. passed his final concussion tests and the Toronto Blue Jays slugger is expected to return from the seven-day injured list on Saturday.
Guerrero returned to the team on Friday and took swings in the batting cage after doubling during a minor league rehabilitation game for Single-A Dunedin on Thursday.
"He felt good," manager John Schneider said before the Blue Jays opened a three-game series with the Yankees. "Even before he left to play in Clearwater, he was feeling good. He feels pretty normal, so that's a good thing."
Guerrero left a 3-1 win in Toronto over the Yankees last Friday after a collision with New York rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. on a bizarre play at third base in the sixth inning.
The six-time All-Star was injured when he slid at third base and had Lombard's knee and thigh strike his head. The play caused Guerrero's helmet to get dislodged, though the first baseman scored the tying run before exiting.

Revealed on Friday afternoon, a trio of Alabama Crimson Tide players have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2026 Chuck Bednarik Award.
Each of those three are returning starters on the Crimson Tide's defense, two of which are defensive backs in senior safety Bray Hubbard and junior cornerback Zabien Brown. Yhonzae Pierre, a senior outside linebacker, was also part of the preseason watch list.
The Bednarik Award is presented annually to the nation's top defensive player in college football. Alabama has seen three players receive the honor previously in Jonathan Allen (2016), Minkah Fitzpatrick (2017), and most recently, Will Anderson Jr. (2022).
Of the three, Hubbard is Alabama's top returning tackler from a year ago with 79 total, with the safety leading the SEC with four interceptions. Brown, who recorded 39 tackles, led college football with two interceptions returned for a touchdown, while Pierre was Alabama's sack and TFL leader a year ago with eight and 14.5, respectively.

The Yankees (71-55) and the Orioles (61-66) conclude their three-game AL East series tonight at Camden Yards. With wins in the first two games, New York has pulled to within five games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East. Baltimore opened the series sitting in the final Wild Card spot but now are 1.5 games behind the Twins for a postseason berth.
Last night the Yankees won, 5-3. Along the way, they may have gotten a little help from the umpires. More on that in a moment. The Orioles struck first in unusual fashion in the bottom of the first. Jackson Holliday stole home to give Baltimore an early 1-0 lead. New York answered quickly. In the second inning, Ryan McMahon delivered an RBI single that scored Jazz Chisholm Jr., tying the game before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Moments later, George Lombard Jr. hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Spencer Jones to give the Yankees a 2-1 advantage. The Yankees extended the lead in the third when Ben Rice launched a 447-foot solo homer to right-center field, his 34th home run of the season. Baltimore responded immediately as Pete Alonso crushed a 423-foot homer of his own in the bottom half, trimming the deficit to 3-2. The game remained close into the sixth inning when Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers tied the score at 3-3 with a solo homer to left-center.
The pivotal and controversial moment arrived in the seventh. Alonso thought he had given Baltimore the lead with a deep drive down the left-field line. The ball clearly looked to tuck inside the foul pole but was ruled foul...even after review. Instead of taking a 4-3 lead, the Orioles remained tied, and the Yankees took advantage in the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, New York loaded the bases and grabbed the lead when Lombard Jr. beat out an infield single, scoring Heliot Ramos. Moments later, Orioles reliever Yennier Cano uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to score an insurance run and give the Yankees a 5-3 advantage. The Yankees bullpen closed the door from there. Brent Headrick earned the victory with a scoreless seventh, while David Bednar recorded his 29th save with a clean ninth inning.
Tonight's pitching matchup features a couple of veteran righthanders in Gerrit Cole (6-6, 3.22 ERA) and Kyle Bradish (7-11, 3.65 ERA). After missing last season and the first couple of months this season following Tommy John surgery, Cole has been an ace over his last four starts allowing a mere four earned runs across 24.2 innings. As good as he has been, the Yankees' bats have rarely supported him, though, as New York has lost four of his last seven starts. Bradish has also been stingy over the past couple of months. The righthander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in his last three starts and in five of his last six outings. The O's have won four of his last six starts.
Lets dive into tonight's matchup and find a sweat or two.

Aston Villa are reported to have made enquiries to explore the terms of a potential transfer for AC Milan player Christopher Nkunku (28), according to reports from Onze Mondial.
The forward, who is said to have been placed on the transfer list by his new manager Ruben Amorim, is also reportedly on the radar of Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. Turkish and Saudi clubs are also said to be monitoring his situation, whilst the Rossoneri are reportedly open to the idea of loaning him out.
Having arrived in Lombardy from Chelsea for a fee of €37m a yeard ago, Nkunku made 35 appearances (17 as a starter) across all competitions last season, proving decisive on 11 occasions, scoring eight goals and providing three ***** ists.
Making two appearances during the Milan club's pre-season, he notably scored a goal against rivals Inter Milan. Nevertheless, Amorim considered these performances to be insufficient to convince him to rely on his strengths for the upcoming campaign.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Pete Alonso's drive down the left-field line in the seventh inning was ruled foul, and the New York Yankees took advantage of that reprieve, scoring twice in the top of the eighth to beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Wednesday night.
Alonso, who had already homered in the third, nearly went deep again with the score tied at 3. His fly to left was initially called foul. One replay seemed to show the ball on the fair side of the pole, but it wasn't clear what angle it was shot from.
After a review, the call stood and Alonso ended up striking out.
The following inning, Cam Sanders (1-1) loaded the bases with a walk and two hit batters. Yennier Cano came on with two outs, and George Lombard Jr. hit a slow roller for an infield single to put New York ahead. Then a wild pitch made it 5-3.
Brent Headrick (7-2) won in relief. David Bednar worked the ninth for his 29th save in 32 chances.

Sam Hubbard and Total Quality Logistics combined efforts to provide 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies, snacks and hygiene items for students at Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy during a back-to-school service project in Cincinnati.
The retired Cincinnati Bengals defensive end joined about 100 employees at TQL's Cincinnati headquarters on July 9 for the volunteer event, according to a community announcement. The effort marked the second year of a partnership-focused initiative supporting local students ahead of the school year.
Hubbard's nonprofit, the Sam Hubbard Foundation, works to expand access to food, education and healthy lifestyles through Hubbard's Cupboard, a program that supplies essential items to 36 schools across Greater Cincinnati.
The announcement said the foundation's mission aligns with TQL's commitment to supporting communities where employees live and work.
During the event, TQL presented a $25,000 matching grant to the Sam Hubbard Foundation.
