EAST RUTHERFORD - Childhood dreams will be realized and dashed this weekend as the New York Giants and the rest of the NFL move closer to the games that count with the unenviable task of sending hopefuls home.
With clubs going from 90-man rosters to an initial 53-man team, roughly 1,184 players will lose their jobs before Sunday's cutdown deadline of 6 p.m. Some moves were made Saturday with the rest coming today as the necessary evil takes shape.
"[Late Giants Hall of Fame owner] Wellington Mara famously said, 'Once a Giant, always a Giant,' [and] I think that holds true as well," Giants coach John Harbaugh said. "You become part of the team, part of the organization, part of the fabric of what it means to be a Giant, and I do think that those guys, they treasure it. ... How many of us that played football wouldn't have loved to have had an opportunity to be in a football camp in the National Football League? To be invited, to get a try out even? All the not-so-good players like me would have loved that, and I tell these guys, 'You are the very best. Every single player here in this room is a great football player.'"
The Giants awakened up Sunday morning having made eight cuts, so team brass and the coaching staff will get right to work. They'll need to clear 29 more spots following the first wave of cuts; those players are:

The Tennessee ******* ans have finished off their preseason with a 24-15 loss to the Chicago Bears, dropping their record to 2-1 just ahead of the league-mandated cuts on Sunday evening.

We've been keeping tabs on the former Minnesota Vikings for a few years now. With so many notable players around the league, it is easy. What isn't as easy is remembering the role players, or the depth players who showcase themselves in the small roles that make the big difference.
One of those former Vikings was released on Saturday as roster cutdowns begin.
The Pittsburgh Steelers released linebacker Jamin Davis on Saturday, Aug. 29, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. Davis did not play any games with the Steelers and was with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025.

Former Falcons defensive lineman Zion Logue also lost his job on Saturday afternoon. The Buffalo Bills released the former Georgia Bulldogs standout in their first wave of roster cuts.

This was expected move, but there could be another shoe about to drop. The New Orleans Saints are waiving backup quarterback Hunter Dekkers ahead of Sunday's NFL roster cuts deadline, as first reported by Mike Triplett for NewOrleans.Football and confirmed by ESPN's Katherine Terrell. Dekkers was buried on the depth chart behind Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Zach Wilson which meant he didn't see a single rep in team drills at training camp. The Buffalo Bills on Saturday announced a handful of their final cuts as they trim their roster to 53 players. Among their initial cuts was former San Francisco 49ers second-round pick Dante Pettis.
Pettis was the 49ers' second-round pick in the 2018 draft. He put together a strong rookie campaign in San Francisco with 27 catches for 467 yards and five touchdowns despite suffering a knee injury in Week 4 and being limited to 12 games. His arrow was pointed up with the 49ers and it looked after Year 1 like he might be a foundational piece of their receiving corps.
Unfortunately for Pettis, the wheels came off in 2019 as the 49ers became a Super Bowl contender. He caught 11 ******* for 109 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games during his sophomore campaign. Pettis didn't make it through 2020 with the 49ers. He didn't record a catch in five games and was waived in November.

Roster cuts are beginning to fly left and right, but Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger believes one underrated running back deserves to make the 53-man squad.
On a new episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, Lew Nichols earned massive praise for his high level of play this past month, with Big Ben arguing that he should make a 53-man roster, whether it's with Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
"Nichols ran awesome last night," Roethlisberger said. "I think he, maybe, like said 'Hey hey, don't forget about me'. I think he did enough last night to get himself a job. If not here, somewhere, but I think here."
Nichols signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and was released by the team in September of his rookie year. After off-and-on stints with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad from 2023 to 2025, Nichols joined the Steelers in July 2025.

On a new episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, Lew Nichols earned massive praise for his high level of play this past month, with Big Ben arguing that he should make a 53-man roster, whether it's with Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
"Nichols ran awesome last night," Roethlisberger said. "I think he, maybe, like said 'Hey hey, don't forget about me'. I think he did enough last night to get himself a job. If not here, somewhere, but I think here."
Nichols signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and was released by the team in September of his rookie year. After off-and-on stints with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad from 2023 to 2025, Nichols joined the Steelers in July 2025.
