ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia prison officials plan to execute a man next month who was convicted of fatally shooting two real estate agents in Atlanta's suburbs more than two decades ago.
Stacey Humphreys, 53, was convicted of malice murder in the 2003 killings of 33-year-old Cyndi Williams and 21-year-old Lori Brown. He is set to receive a lethal injection at the state prison near Jackson at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16, according to the Department of Corrections.
Humphreys would be the first person executed in Georgia this year. The death penalty in the state has largely been tied up in litigation over an agreement related to the coronavirus pandemic that defense lawyers contend temporarily shields many death row residents from execution. The last execution in the state was in March 2024.
Humphreys was previously scheduled to die last December, but the execution was halted after his lawyers filed a petition asking a judge to order two members of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles to recuse themselves from hearing his clemency petition. Gold trading near $4,270 should have been a coronation for VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSEARCA:GDX). Instead, GDX holders own a fund that has gained 76.34% over the past year, yet still sits roughly 22% below its 52-week high of $117.16. The gap between the metal and the miners is the core reason to own GDX, and that gap remains wide. A related VanEck product has historically closed it, and most GDX holders already know its name without owning it.
GDX is the default vehicle for gold-mining equity exposure. It holds the majors, with Newmont at 10.37%, Agnico Eagle at 10.12%, and Barrick at 6.01%, and the top 10 positions account for 56.30% of **** ets. Constellation Brands will invest $100 million over five years to boost U.S. farmer profitability in states that produce hops, barley and other ingredients in the Modelo and Corona maker's beers.
The investment will include additional purchases from farmers in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota, plus initiatives to improve market access and economic resiliency.
The beer maker will also establish a farmer-led advisory committee that will provide insight on how the investments can best support growers in the company's agricultural supply chain.
The farm economy is facing a "generational downturn," according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, as increased production costs and sustained weather challenges strain financials.

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A former senior adviser to infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci pleaded guilty Tuesday to plotting to conceal federal records related to research on the origins of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. David Morens is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 12 by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland. Morens pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government, a felony punishable by a maximum prison sentence of five years.
"By pleading guilty today, Dr. Morens has taken responsibility for what he did, and he will continue to do so," defense attorney Tim Belevetz said in a statement after the plea hearing.
Morens is accused of using his private email account to intentionally circumvent public records laws while employed at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The Justice Department alleges that he concealed or destroyed records of discussions related to COVID-19 research grants, including an effort to revive a controversial coronavirus grant.
The indictment follows a probe by House Republicans into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that scrutinized Morens' email communications and accused him of intentionally concealing records. In congressional testimony, Morens denied attempting to evade federal transparency laws by using his personal email.

MOOSIC, PA(WBRE/WYOU)-- The Charlotte Knights score twice in the first, third, and fourth innings to take an early lead and not look back. The RailRiders 7-2 loss to Charlotte is the teams sixth loss in the team's last seven games. The loss drops SWB to 25-19 for the second half of the season. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre now sits 2.5 games out of first place.
The RailRiders evened the game at two runs a piece in the second inning. Tyler Hardman and Kenedy Corona each driving in a run. Those were the only runs though for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
The Knights took back the lead in the third inning at 4-2, and then extending it to 6-2 in the fourth inning. Both in the third and fourth the runs came off of two-run home runs. Charlotte added one more on in top of the ninth to finish the 7-2 rout.
Xaiver Rivas took the loss on Wednesday night. Rivas tossed 3.1 innings allowing six earned runs, on five hits and four walks.

The U.S. subsidiary of France-based contract logistics provider ID Logistics Group SA has agreed to pay $2.36 million to resolve allegations that it improperly obtained a Paycheck Protection Program loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration during the Covid crisis for which it was not eligible.
ID Logistics US submitted an application for a PPP loan certifying that, together with its affiliates, it had fewer than 500 employees when it actually had more than 500 employees and, therefore, was not eligible for the loan, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced on Tuesday.
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act in 2020 provided forgivable loans to small businesses for job retention and other expenses through the Paycheck Protection Program. PPP loans were guaranteed by the SBA and, if the loan proceeds were used for eligible expenses, the SBA would forgive the loan balance and accrued interest.
To obtain a PPP loan, a qualifying business had to submit a PPP loan application to an authorized lender. Whether an applicant qualified as a small business was determined, in part, by ******* sing the number of employees of the business, including any domestic and foreign affiliates.
The fraudulent loan application was flagged for authorities by a whistleblower, who will receive $236,200 from the settlement, according to the Department of Justice.
