On September 14, Dave & Buster's Entertainment (NASDAQ:PLAY) reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 results that read like two different companies at once. Revenue fell, and the company posted a net loss for the period ended August 4, yet comparable sales, which had been sliding for more than a year, kept getting less bad every month from June through the first five weeks of the third quarter. New CEO Darin Harper is betting that improvement compounds into something bigger.
The clearest evidence is the trend line itself. Comparable store sales fell 5.4% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, then 2.9% in the second quarter, then just 1.6% in July after a 5% decline in June, and Harper said trends improved further over the first five weeks of the third quarter. Food and beverage sales are moving in the opposite direction entirely, up 7.6% in the quarter and positive for five straight quarters, helped by the Eat & Play Combo, a bundled meal and game credit offer sold through kiosks. Special event sales have now grown for seven consecutive quarters.
Behind that shift sits a rebuilt leadership bench. Dave & Buster's went more than a year without a chief marketing officer, and Harper has since added a CMO, a chief operations officer, a chief technology officer, and a chief legal officer since taking over. The company also leaned on new content, launching 10 games and attractions this year, including tie-ins with Mandalorian and Grogu, John Wick and Stranger Things, after research found more than 70% of guests said new games would bring them back more often. Changes to game pricing pushed play and dwell time up 16% to 20% or more. Six remodeled stores are already outperforming the rest of the chain, and management says the newest remodel template costs less to build than the last one. Net capital spending dropped to $127.6 million through the first half of the year from $155.4 million, and adjusted free cash flow swung to positive $19.5 million from negative $36.5 million, a $56 million improvement.
The headline figures were still rough. Total revenue slipped 2.4% to $544.1 million from $557.4 million a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA dropped to $98.9 million, an 18.2% margin, from $129.8 million and a 23.3% margin. On a GAAP basis, the company posted a net loss of $12.5 million, or $0.36 per diluted share, versus net income of $11.4 million in the same quarter last year. About $15 million of the EBITDA decline came from items management calls non-normalized, including a $10 million noncash deferral adjustment that did not repeat this year, $3 million in extra preopening costs and $2 million in higher insurance expenses, but even stripped of those, the underlying decline was still roughly $16 million.

The Denver Broncos were in a desperate situation entering the 2026 AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots. With starting quarterback Bo Nix injured and missing the game, the team reportedly reached out to Hall of Famer Drew Brees to see if he was interested in what could have been one of the most surreal moments in the sport's history.
The Broncos had homefield advantage, but were dealt a cruel blow with Nix breaking his ankle late in their Divisional Round overtime win against the Buffalo Bills. Backup Jarrett Stidham started the game and in blizzard-like conditions, could only muster seven points as the Patriots won 10-7 to advance to the Super Bowl.
But what if it was one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time under center for the Broncos that day?
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Broncos did indeed reach out to Drew Brees to gauge his interest in an improbable comeback. Considering that Sean Payton coaches the Broncos and the pairing is one of the most successful in NFL history while winning a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, it's easy to see why Denver made the call. Since his debut in 2018, Ronald Acuña Jr. has been one of baseball's most exciting players. His power-speed combo has made him one of the sport's best players. In 2019, Acuña fell just short of the elusive 40/40 club. In 156 games, he tallied 41 home runs and 37 stolen bases, which led the National League.
He was on an MVP trajectory in 2021. In 82 games that season, Acuña had a .990 OPS with 24 home runs and 17 stolen bases. Unfortunately, everything changed on July 10 when he tore his ACL attempting to make a leaping catch at the wall down in Miami. During his first three and a half seasons, Acuña was on the fast track to the Hall of Fame. His injury not only slowed that down, but it also raised questions about whether he'd ever be the same again.
The Braves eventually won the World Series, but Acuña was sidelined and could only celebrate from the dugout. Still, though, he received a World Series ring on Opening Day in 2022. He would return to action on April 28 against the Chicago Cubs. However, it was clear that Acuña wasn't the same player. In 119 games, he only hit 15 home runs, and his OPS dropped to .764—the worst mark of his career. It seemed he would never be the same again, but Acuña quieted the doubters with one of the greatest individual seasons in MLB history.
Acuña didn't just make history; the Braves did, too. In 2023, Atlanta finished with the best record in MLB (104-58). That year, they tied the MLB record for home runs in a season (307). Three players, including Acuña (41), hit at least 40 home runs that season. In 2023, MLB also made a slew of rule changes, including making the bases 18 inches. The extra three inches, along with the new pickoff rule, were meant to influence more action on the base paths.

25-year-old Guardians LHP Parker Messick made his MLB debut last August, and so far the results have been pretty spectacular. Even if they're helped a little by a lucky batting average on **** in play (he's at .264 for the season, the MLB average is .289). That's not a crazy outlier though, I don't think. Messick relies heavily on a 94-ish fastball and slightly slower sinker; that combo has been dynamite for him this season. He'll frequently mix in a change, less frequently some breaking stuff.
75 years ago, Bill Veeck pulled one of his signature wacky baseball stunts. He signed 3'7" Eddie Gaedel to the Browns' roster and had him pinch-hit in a game. Gaedel drew a walk — obviously his strike zone was small — and Veeck replaced him with a pinch-runner. The pinch-runner didn't score
Now, Veeck owned the St. Louis Browns at that time, not the team in Cleveland. (So this is kinda the wrong week for this post. I thought this happened in Cleveland, until I started writing it.)
But Veeck had owned the Indians for four years, selling them in 1950 when he needed money for a divorce settlement. And had done some notable things with the team, like signing the first Negro League player to join the American League, Larry Doby. (When manager Lou Boudreau introduced Doby to the team, three players refused to shake his hand — and Veeck got rid of all three.) In 1949, Veeck signed Satchel Paige, the oldest rookie to ever play in MLB at the age of 41; he'd pitch 155.2 innings over two seasons for the team (and then became a two-time All-Star with the Browns).
Veeck claimed the idea of using a small person as a pinch-hitter was his own notion… however, there'd been a 1941 story in The Saturday Evening Post called "You Could Look it Up" by James Thurber, author of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." You can read the Thurber story here, if you like. It has paintings by Norman Rockwell which are very detailed and striking, as usual:

On Thursday, Bowman reportedly committed to UConn. The news spread on social media in the morning, including a post from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. There is an NFL angle to the story: Bowman's father was a three-time Pro Bowl linebacker with the San Francisco 49ers and a former **** istant coach with the Los Angeles Charger.

As the 2026-27 Iowa women's basketball season approaches, the Hawkeyes will host 2027 four-star combo guard commit Jada Seubert and 2027 four-star center recruit Khalia Hartwell on official visits this upcoming Cy-Hawk weekend on Sept. 11-12.
Hartwell, a 6-foot-5 prospect, is the nation's No. 16 overall player, the No. 2 center and the top player in South Carolina, per 247Sports. Rivals rates Hartwell as the country's No. 26 player, as the No. 3 center and as the top player in South Carolina.
A product of Westside High School in Anderson, S.C., the 6-foot-5 center was named South Carolina's Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 12.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game.
With Iowa sandwiched between official visits to Georgia (Sept. 4) and Virginia Tech (Sept. 18), the Hawkeyes hope that their recruitment pitch and potentially the influence of Seubert can help advance the program to the top of Hartwell's mind.

The Monster Jam monster truck stunt show is back in Jacksonville. Eventgoers can expect big trucks doing big tricks all weekend long.
Typically, this event is held at Everbank Stadium, but because of the Stadium of the Future construction, it's been moved.
Truckloads of dirt were wheeled into Vystar, but the big wheels everyone is interested in are 12,000-pound monster trucks!
"There's nothing like taking a 12,000-pound truck and doing a backflip into a nose wheel combo or something crazy like that," said monster truck driver Tony Ochs.
The Saturday and Sunday event features driver competitions in three categories: Racing, 2 Wheel Skills and Freestyle. Some of the stunts include back flips and vertical two-wheel tricks.

It's been a lengthy offseason, but at long last, football is just around the corner for the Oregon Ducks. Not only does that mean that fans can go back to watching and breaking down play on the field instead of theorizing about what's to come, but it also means that one of our favorite weekly traditions in Eugene has returned as well.
Uniform releases.
On Wednesday evening, the Ducks unveiled their Week 1 jerseys for their game against the Boise State Broncos. For the season-opener, Oregon will be rocking a green and yellow look, with yellow helmets, a green top, and yellow pants.
This look is similar to what we saw last year against the James Madison Dukes in the College Football Playoff, but with a yellow helmet instead of green.

The Brooklyn Nets came into the 2026 NBA offseason with the goal of improving the team as much as possible following a 2025-26 campaign in which they finished with a 20-62 record. Brooklyn made some interesting moves this summer, headlined by trading for Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle, and the Nets fanbase is wondering what the outlook for the 2026-27 season looks like.
"A year ago, the Nets kept and used all five of their first-round draft picks. This summer, Brooklyn chose to give overworked forward Michael Porter Jr. some immediate help instead," Shaun Powell wrote on the Nets for NBA.com. Powell's outlook seems to center on the fact that Randle and forward Michael Porter Jr. will be tasked with being the leaders of the team while also developing the youngest players on the team.
"It resulted in a trade for Randle, a former All-NBA player who is no stranger to New York; some of his best years were spent with the Knicks," Powell continued. "[Mikel] Brown Jr. was taken at No. 6 and brings solid combo guard skills from his college days at Louisville. He has a decent chance to earn front-end rotational minutes right away; such is the benefit of joining a team in transition."
As Powell mentioned, the Nets invested heavily in the 2025 NBA Draft as they acquired five first-round picks and used each of them on players they hoped would form the core of the roster. Guard Egor Demin appears to be the standout member of the five-person class at this point, but next season will be time for the other four players to show their potential given the stakes of the rebuild.
Randle and Porter will be able to provide enough scoring and shooting to make the team formidable on some nights, but the goal of the season would be to see how quickly players like Demin and Brown develop. For the Penn State offense, the goal for the upcoming season is simple: prove that you can compete in the Big Ten. With a whole lot of transfers coming in, this will be the first time some of these players are put to the test. And perhaps no other offensive position group is under more pressure than the wide receivers, specifically Iowa State transfer Brett Eskildsen.
As the leading receiver for the Cyclones last season, Eskildsen profiles as a physical WR1 who can win on the boundary and show strength after the catch. At 6-1, 198 pounds, Eskildsen offers a speed/power combo that could translate pretty well to the Big Ten. Last season, he had 523 yards and 5 touchdowns in the Cyclones' offense, but more impressively, he averaged 17.53 yards per reception as well. As a result, he was awarded All-Big 12 honorable mention honors.
To start the season, Eskildsen will be up against a Marshall secondary that may be one of the more underrated units in the country. Expect Eskildsen to be utilized heavily in the red zone, where he can make key contested plays, and also in late-down situations where he can win. While Week 1 won't be a true test of Eskildsen's abilities, Penn State fans will hope to see a flash of a player who can revive what has proved to be a weak position group for the Nittany Lions in the past.

The good feelings lasted about 53 minutes. In that far-too-brief period of time, we got to see a glimpse of what the 2026-27 Borussia Dortmund squad could do, even without Joey Veerman or Nico Schlotterbeck. But with Konstantinos Karetsas and Giannis Konstantelias, the two signings designed more than anything to reinvigorate the club as a whole, out on the pitch showing what they were made of, we were flying.
Hamburg couldn't get out of their own half, much less touch the Dortmund goal. The Greek kids looked every bit the talented studs that were promised. Karetsas played a perfect combo with Guirassy to set up the Dortmund striker for his and the club's first goal of the season. Then, just before the half, Giannis opened his own account when Maxi Beier played him into the box. He dribbled, found a bit of **** e, and took a shot that took a very fortunate deflection off Sebastiaan Bornauw and into the net. The deflection was so lucky I thought it might be ruled an own goal, but the Bundesliga's website still gives it to Giannis as of writing this.
Aaaaaaaaand that was it for the good feelings. BVB came out into the second half and it took eight minutes for the season to end. Giannis challenged for a ball, tweaked his knee without contact, and had to be subbed off. Niko Kovac subbed on Marcel Sabitzer, but Giannis's absence was noticed immediately. Hamburg controlled the play much better in the second half, and to add to the sour mood, Samuele Inacio received a straight red card towards the end of the match with a late slide-tackle that connected with Albert Grønbæk's shin. Inacio walked off in tears.
So Dortmund held out for the 2-0 win and clean-sheet, but the mood was irrevocably destroyed. We can never have nice things, and when we do they only get briefly teased before they get ripped away. The night is dark and full of terrors.
I'll just say it because we're all already thinking it: I'm very nervous that Giannis tore his ACL. Depending on the severity he could potentially miss the entire season, but even a partial tear would put him out of action for multiple (read: at bare minimum three months). Bottom line, unless it's a miracle and it's only a Grade 1 or something less severe like a meniscus tear (which would still require many weeks' recovery), we're not seeing him back on the pitch any time soon. If I'm Ole Book, I'm trying to find a last second cheap winger on the transfer market.

Well, they lost the first one. But they're back to try it again! The San Francisco Giants are hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second game of a doubleheader, and are hoping to split the four-game series.
It's an exciting pitching situation for the Giants, as right-hander Yunior Marte takes the mound for his MLB debut. Marte — not to be confused with the reliever of the same name, who pitched for San Francisco in 2022 — is a young prospect whom the Giants acquired a year ago in the Mike Yastrzemski trade. He is, shockingly, following in Jonah **** 's footsteps as the second player the Giants have called up directly from AA this year … after going nearly a decade without making such a move.
Marte, who turned 23 earlier this month, has a strong fastball/slider combo, with a splitter as well. He's fastball reliant, and sits mid-90s, while occasionally touching high-90s. He does a good job limiting walks, despite a slightly herky-jerky motion that isn't always conducive to consistent strike-throwing. In 13 starts with AA Richmond this year, Marte posted a 3.92 ERA and a 3.97 FIP, with 72 strikeouts and 22 walks in 64.1 innings. He started the year with High-A Eugene, where he had a 3.74 ERA and a 4.11 FIP in nine games, with 41 strikeouts and 19 walks in 43.1 innings. He was not on the 40-man roster (though he would have been a Rule 5 decision this winter), so the Giants made a spot for him by moving Casey Schmitt to the 60-Day IL. The Giants made **** e on the active roster by optioning lefty Seth Lonsway, who made his MLB debut in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Dallas Cowboys have a chance to go undefeated in the preseason for the first time in two decades if they can defeat the New Orleans Saints on Friday night. Given the culture forged by head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the team wants to make it happen. While preseason results don't matter in regards to the regular season and playoffs, for some on the bottom of the roster fighting for a spot, it's everything.
The Cowboys might not know who's making the team at the end of the depth chart at receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback, or safety. It's rare, but occasionally a great showing in the final preseason game can be the thing that pushes someone onto the 53-man roster over someone else who doesn't have a good showing.
The Cowboys have one of the best defensive tackle combos in the NFL. If Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark aren't the best, they're definitely top tier. Otito Ogbonnia is an impactful veteran run stopper, and then the cupboard looks bare.
Jonathan Bullard should be a good veteran, but he has been out all camp and could be a cut candidate who goes to the practice squad and then is called up once he is completely healthy. In 326 snaps last season, he had a run defense grade of 63.9, average at best.
The other three in the group include 2025 draft pick Jay Toia and undrafted free agent (UDFA) rookies D.J. Withers and Tommy Dunn. Through two preseason games, Toia's run defense grade dropped from 65.9 against the Seattle Seahawks to 23.1 against the Cardinals. Dunn was consistent with a PFF run grade of 66.8 in both contests, and Withers had a run grade of 70.2 in game one and 68.2 in game two.

The Washington Commanders will play their third preseason game on Friday evening against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. It's a mere hop, skip, and jump away from where the Commanders play in Landover, so while it's an away game, there's very little travel involved.
Ahead of their Friday evening preseason game, the Commanders and Ravens held a joint practice, and it wasn't pretty for the burgundy and gold. Most of the practice was dominated by the Ravens, save for the end of the day when the Commanders seemed to figure things out. After practice, right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. spoke with reporters about the day.

The Eagles offense looked much better in its second time out, but it wasn't enough to leave Gillette Stadium with a preseason win (gasp!)
Here are the players/people who either helped their stock or hurt it during the 24-21 loss:
As I mulled over which of the Eagles developmental offensive linemen I should begin with on my stock report, the conversation from a few months ago surrounding the potential drop-off in development for those exact players because of Jeff Stoutland's departure came to mind.
For as loud as the concerns about the Eagles continuing to bring along unusual offensive linemen in a post-Stoutland world were after the longtime **** istant coach's resignation in February, it feels fitting to begin tonight's stock report with Kuper, who has done a nice job in his first summer as offensive line coach with the likes of Markel Bell, Drew Kendall, and Willie Lampkin.
Each member of that trio had highlight moments in the early going of a resurgent night from the Eagles offense. Bell carved out a massive running lane for Will Shipley on the Eagles' first scoring drive of the night and, on the next play, Lampkin and Kendall combined for a combo block that washed two Patriots defenders five yards off the line of scrimmage as Will Shipley ran in for a touchdown.

After finishing with a 7-10 record in 2025 and making several changes to their front office and coaching staff, the Miami Dolphins made their first pick in the 2026 NFL draft at No. 12 overall, where they took Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor.
While Proctor played left tackle for the Crimson Tide, the Dolphins are moving him to left guard because they already have Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson playing left and right tackle, respectively.
The Dolphins have only been working on the practice field at training camp for a few weeks and have only played in one preseason game, but Proctor has already thoroughly impressed new head coach Jeff Hafley.
"Proctor's been outstanding," Hafley told reporters on Thursday. "I mean, I just, I can't say enough about him. The guy loves ball. The guy is tough; he's physical. The buy-in has been outstanding. He's fun to be around. He loves coming to work every single day. He's a rookie, right? So he's gonna see some stuff he's never seen before. He's gonna see stuff at practice he's never seen before because it's not our defense, and we didn't game plan against them. So there's gonna be moments where maybe he's late coming back on a game, or maybe they stem any combos to the wrong guy, and you gotta take a deep breath and really watch him grow, and that's what I'm excited most about him."
Proctor's success in 2026 will be a key indicator for the team this season. If the rookie and the rest of the offensive line group can hold up, there's a chance that Malik Willis and co. will surpass expectations. If Proctor struggles, things could get ugly quickly in South Florida.

The White Sox are looking to rebound on the North Side after a heartbreaking, walk-off loss to the Cubs in extra innings Monday. With a chance to even the series tonight, they are turning to a (fairly) exhausted bullpen to handle Tuesday's game, with lefthander Bryan Hudson getting the ball first for the seventh time this season.
