Discover how intermodal freight is delivering massive savings in today's volatile market. As truckload spot and contract rates stabilize, intermodal options provide a crucial cost-saving advantage, especially on key lanes. Learn where to find the biggest savings and how shifting modes can optimize your freight spend.
Intermodal savings have surged to their highest level in several years, driven by a widening gap between rising truckload rates and relatively flat intermodal pricing, according to FreightWaves SONAR data presented by Julie Van de Kamp during a live update from the College Football Hall of Fame.
On the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Atlanta lane — one of the top savings lanes in SONAR's intermodal dashboard — van spot truckload rates are up approximately 42%, van contract rates are up about 26%, and intermodal rates have risen only 16%, making a compelling case for mode conversion. East Coast corridors, particularly those out of Atlanta and Harrisburg, are leading the savings rankings, with lanes including Atlanta to Chicago, Atlanta to Joliet, Atlanta to Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Harrisburg to both Ontario, California, and Los Angeles all trending upward in the savings index over the most recent three months.
"That is such a good reason to consider mode conversion, take advantage of those savings, and understand where that helps even in a backhaul lane like what would typically be PA to Chicago at a length of haul that's not transcon," said Julie Van de Kamp.
The broader market context reinforces the intermodal value proposition. Tender rejections saw a significant drop from July 20 to August 5 but are now stabilizing, and spot rates, while down from earlier peaks year to date, are also leveling off. Meanwhile, contract truckload rates continue to rise, narrowing the gap between spot and contract. Van de Kamp noted a roughly 66-cent-per-mile spread between spot rates on the NTI and contract rates on the VCRPM1, though she cautioned that spot rates are all-in while contract rates are linehaul only — with fuel surcharges running approximately $0.70 per mile based on a Department of Energy estimate of around $45.

Lazio have secured a new sleeve sponsor in Kaiyunsports.news, giving the club an important financial boost.
Earlier this month, the Aquile parted ways with their main shirt sponsor, Polymarket, as the company was blacklisted in Italy for allegedly offering its clients unauthorised betting activities. Nevertheless, Polymarket still paid Lazio the entire sum allocated for the 2026/27 campaign as per their original agreement. The club therefore picked up an estimated €9.5 million as remuneration.
The Italian capital club has yet to find a new main shirt sponsor, but on Saturday, they announced an agreement with digital platform Kaiyunsports.news, whose logo will be placed on the club's jersey in Serie A games for the next two seasons. Lazio made the announcement via a note published on the club's official website.
S.S. Lazio is pleased to announce a new partnership with kaiyunsports.news, which will become the Club's Official Sleeve Sponsor for the 2026/27 and 2027/28 Serie A seasons. As part of the partnership, the kaiyunsports.news logo will appear on the sleeve of the S.S. Lazio Men's First Team jersey during official Serie A matches throughout the two seasons, marking the beginning of a new collaboration between the historic Italian club and the international sports news platform.kaiyunsports.news is a global sports news platform delivering football news, match coverage and sports content to fans around the world. Through its partnership with S.S. Lazio, kaiyunsports.news aims to further strengthen its international presence while ******* ociating its brand with the history, tradition and international appeal of one of Italy's most established football clubs.
While the figures behind the agreement haven't been disclosed, this partnership will certainly boost the club's coffers. However, this deal is unlikely to have an immediate effect on Lazio's ongoing transfer business. The Biancocelesti have been restricted to a net-zero transfer market, so they can only generate funds through fresh sales and wage savings.

Treasury data confirmed last night that U.S. national debt now stands at $40 trillion, with the government now expected to spend more than $1 trillion in interest on the debt in the fiscal year of 2026.

Debt hawks have been warning policymakers for some time that the nation's fiscal path is unsustainable, and the issue is increasingly rising up voters' agendas in the run-up to midterms later this year.

A new report from The Conference Board throws the issue into a new light for consumers: The potential impact on their personal finances if policymakers continue borrowing at the current pace.
The Conference Board modeled a series of scenarios: Baseline (using Congressional Budget Office data based on current trends), a good-case (in which federal deficits are cut roughly in half, in line with current targeting proposals), and a bad-case (in which deficit levels grow to 9% of GDP rather than the current 6% to 7%).
The Conference Board also modeled two financial crisis scenarios—a default and an interest rate shock—which economists like Bridgewater ****** ociates founder Ray Dalio have long been concerned about.
Even dismissing the most extreme negative outcomes, consumers still stand to lose thousands if policymakers don't act to reduce spending.
For example, the report models a family saving to buy a $600,000 house in either 5 or 10 years, with a 20% down payment and a 30-year fixed mortgage. The report does not provide a methodology for calculating rates offered in 2031 and 2036, but concludes that total payments over three decades for a home bought in 2031 come to $2.89m, and $2.8m in 2036.

During the August 18 episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer turned his attention toward the resilience of the American consumer and the solid trajectory of travel platforms. He highlighted the ongoing strength in the travel segment, as he commented:
Finally, in my litany of things that just aren't that horrible, front and center is the consumer. Last night, I talked about how well Airbnb is doing. It's on fire. People traveling their darn… heads off. They're using AI to write programs and answer calls, and it's saving them fortunes.
Cramer's current bullishness follows a steady evolution from earlier market skepticism, recalling how Wall Street previously treated the travel sector amid broader macro headwinds. During the April 22 episode, when a caller asked about the Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) stock, Cramer responded:
Travel and leisure's being challenged. But I gotta tell you, I read a Wells Fargo piece this morning that said we are finally at the inflection and the stock is about to turn up. I am going with Wells Fargo. I think it's at the right level. I think it is going to do incredibly well, and this is a buy. And I did say in How to Make Money in Any Market, I made the point that Brian Chesky is real, okay? The guy, the CEO, he's real. He has some ups and downs like the rest of us. But holy cow, I think he's going to be good.
Airbnb, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ABNB) second-quarter financial results support the long-term conviction, with revenue growing 16.8% year-over-year to $3.61 billion, beating consensus estimates by $30 million. GAAP EPS came in at $1.37, outperforming expectations by $0.12. Gross booking value climbed 16% to $27.2 billion, driven by strong travel demand across core and expansion markets.

The surrogate mother who refused an abortion request after the baby she was carrying was diagnosed with a serious heart defect is pressing her legal fight after the newborn underwent lifesaving heart surgery, days after she says he was taken from her just 60 seconds after birth.
McKenna West, an Alaska mother and cardiac nurse who carried the child, said Thursday she is continuing to fight for the baby after she was separated from him moments after giving birth Aug. 12.
"I haven't been allowed to hold this precious baby boy I carried and protected throughout my pregnancy," West wrote in a New York Post op-ed Thursday.
"The only glimpse I got of him was during a very short 60 seconds while his umbilical cord was still connected. As soon as the cord was cut, he was taken away."

If you have money sitting in a traditional savings account, you may not be getting a competitive return on your balance.
Today, the national average savings account rate is just 0.38%, according to the FDIC. However, a good savings account rate is much higher; today's best high-yield savings accounts pay closer to 4% APY — more than 10 times the average.
Here's a closer look at what a good savings account rate looks like in 2026, and where to find the best rates available.
A good savings account rate is one that not only beats the national average (which is currently 0.38%), but also helps your savings outpace inflation. Considering that the current inflation rate is 3.4%, a good savings account rate should be above this threshold — otherwise, your money will lose purchasing power over time.

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday revived an investor lawsuit over the 2023 collapse of Signature Bank, saying the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) ‌seizure of the lender did not take away shareholders' right to sue.
In a 3-0 vote, ‌the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected the FDIC's argument that a 1989 law adopted in the wake of that decade's savings-and-loan crisis gave the regulator sole power to pursue securities fraud claims after becoming the receiver of a failed bank.
The decision is a victory for shareholders led by the Swedish pension fund Sjunde AP-Fonden, which accused seven former Signature executives and directors and Signature's former auditor, KPMG, of misrepresenting ‌the bank's liquidity risks and risk management, inflating its share price. Their proposed class action sought compensation for their losses.
The FDIC declined to comment. Lawyers for the shareholders did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Regulators closed Signature on March 12, 2023, after worried customers withdrew several billion dollars, or about 20% of its deposits following the collapse of the larger Silicon Valley Bank two days earlier.

On August 11, eToro Group Ltd. (NASDAQ:ETOR) reported second-quarter results that read like a company trying to become more than a trading app. Net contribution rose 9% year over year to $229 million, and on the same day the company said it would buy US broker-dealer TradeZero for up to $230 million in cash and stock. Together, the earnings and the deal point to the same question hanging over ETOR: is the platform's growing list of businesses reinforcing each other, or is the company buying growth it might have found on its own?
eToro's core pitch is that users never have to leave the platform no matter where the market's attention goes, and the second quarter backed that up. As investor activity rotated from crypto into commodities and then into equities, net trading contribution from capital markets jumped 25% year over year to $142 million, and the number of trades rose 64% year over year. Funded accounts grew 18% year over year to 4.28 million, climbing further to 4.32 million in July, while ***** ets under administration reached more than $19 billion for the quarter. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $0.68, up from $0.56 a year earlier, and the company closed the quarter with $1.2 billion in cash and short-term investments after generating $39 million from operations. eToro also used some of that cash to repurchase roughly 2.3 million shares for about $87 million during the quarter.
The TradeZero deal adds to that momentum. The broker generated approximately $80 million in revenue over the trailing twelve months with gross margins above 80% in the second quarter of 2026, and eToro expects the acquisition to be accretive to adjusted earnings per share in its first full year once it closes, a step targeted for the first half of 2027. Other parts of the business are scaling just as fast: etoro Money's contribution grew 44% year over year to $26 million as total money transfers rose 92% year over year, card issuance across Europe climbed more than 30% quarter over quarter, and ***** ets in the company's savings product grew fifteen-fold year over year.
Not every part of the business moved in the same direction. Net trading contribution from crypto fell to just $11 million, a decline that included a $2 million negative valuation hit on eToro's own corporate crypto holdings, leaving that balance at $30 million by quarter's end. The pullback carried into the next quarter: July ***** ets under administration slipped to $18.5 billion, down 5% year over year as crypto prices fell, and the number of trades in July came in flat compared to a year earlier.

Tired of bonds falling or tying your cash up in "high yield" savings accounts paying just 3.4%? The bank of Elon Musk's X is pitching an alternative — with a catch.
X Money, the financial section launched in July of Musk's "super-app" tied to the social media platform, is offering to pay 6% annual yields on some cash deposits. That's considerably higher than you'll find at most savings accounts and even certificates of deposit. X Money also includes FDIC insurance up to $250,000.
The difference is vast, especially for investors who hold large amounts of cash. A $100,000 deposit in X Money would pay roughly $6,000 in the first year. That's nearly $2,000 more than you'd earn in Year One in the highest-yielding high-yield bank in the U.S., says Bankrate.com.
Tapping his roots as cofounder of PayPal, Musk is working to turn his X into a super-app. Rather than simply being a way to access the X social media platform, he's working to make it into a go-to source for AI and banking, too.
X Bank isn't a bank, per se. But it has a partnership with a real bank: Cross River Bank in New Jersey. Interestingly, X Bank is paying even more on deposits than Cross River is. Cross River is paying just 3.3% on savings balances of $1 million or more.

Fifty-four percent of U.S. households saved no money last month, EY-Parthenon found in a survey, highlighting how the rising price for gasoline and other goods is undermining consumers' buying power.
One out of five households spent more than it earned and tapped debt or savings to cover expenses, EY-Parthenon said. Seventy-two percent of consumers identified dining out, apparel, beauty and personal care, and other discretionary categories as candidates for spending cuts.
"Many households are maintaining stability through spending trade-offs, delayed purchases and the use of savings or debt," Mark Chambers, the retail sector leader for EY Americas, said in a statement, while noting consumers' "resilience."
Consumers are altering their outlays to cope with persistent price pressures. Inflation rose 3.4% on an annual basis last month after increasing 3.5% in June, even as energy prices during July fell 1.5%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday.

Hayden Panettiere's on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother were at the scene of her death, according to a police report obtained Tuesday by CBS News. The "Heroes" actor, 36, was found dead in a South Carolina apartment on Sunday.
Panettiere and Brian Hickerson had a tumultuous relationship, including Hickerson being arrested multiple times over alleged abuse, according to Panettiere's recent memoir and media reports.
Hickerson and his brother, Zach, made the 911 call that brought first responders to the Greenville, South Carolina, apartment where Panettiere was found unresponsive, the partially redacted police report says. The report is attributed to Officer Matthew Bryan.
Firefighters and EMS were performing CPR on Panettiere when police arrived, Bryan wrote. Panettiere "did not seem to have any obvious physical reasons to be unresponsive," Bryan said. He wrote that EMS performed life-saving measures "for an extended amount of time before they called a time of death." He did not specify how long they worked.
Zach Hickerson told Bryan that Panettiere was Brian Hickerson's girlfriend, the report says. Bryan said there is CCTV footage showing Panettiere and the Hickersons coming and going from the apartment.

It's not often a player can be credited with saving the careers of thousands of players who followed him or ensured that a select few of those would go on to earn hundreds of millions of dollars thanks to his courage.
Yet Tommy John, in conjunction with orthopedist Frank Jobe, did just that for generations of pitchers.
John died Saturday, Aug. 15 at the age of 83, his 288-win career almost a footnote in the grand scope of his life. He served as patient No. 1 for the surgery that would eventually bear his name is among the most significant off-field impacts a player can make.
When he agreed to let Jobe replace the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow in 1974, it was a journey into the unknown at the intersection of sports and medicine. Nowadays, the surgical scar and the established protocols for recovery, regaining strength and eventually returning to the mound are well-established and even more evolved.
Yet all that was foreign to Jobe and John. And you could fill up a wing of the Hall of Fame with those who have benefited.

Tommy John, who won 288 games over a 26-year MLB career died at the age of 83.
John played for six teams from 1963-89. He spent eight years with the Yankees, seven with the White Sox, and six with the Los Angeles Dodgers. John won 91 games as a Yankee, 87 for LA and 82 with the White Sox.
He is also known as the namesake of a pioneering surgery after suffering a torn UCL in 1974. The procedure where a tendon was taken from the wrist and placed in the elbow, gave John his career back and has become commonplace in saving pitchers from having their baseball runs end.
"The New York Yankees mourn the passing of Tommy John, who was a bedrock of our rotation during his time in pinstripes and a longtime favorite of Yankees fans. While his incredible longevity and post-surgery achievements changed the fortunes and trajectory of countless athletes around the world, it also overshadowed his excellence as a pitcher, which included consecutive 20‑win seasons with the Yankees. We pause to remember the totality of his legacy — his competitiveness and skill, his penchant for conversation, his kind and gracious nature, and his stature as an athletic and medical pioneer. The Yankees extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, including wife, Cheryl, daughter, Tamara, and sons Tommy III and Travis. We also keep his son Taylor in our hearts."

Aug 14 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge has ruled that Idaho's near-total abortion ban is unconstitutional because it provides exceptions when abortions are life-saving and not for broader risks to pregnant women's health.
U.S. District Judge ‌Lynn Winmill in Boise said in an 81-page ruling issued late on Thursday that the right to a health-preserving ‌abortion is protected by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees due process and equal protection under the law.
The ruling is the first by a federal judge to recognize a constitutional right to abortion in certain circumstances since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had legalized abortion nationwide, according to lawyers for the Idaho doctor who sued over the state laws.

Some days, Tamara Johnson wonders how her life changed so rapidly.
Johnson, 58, made six figures in an executive leadership position, and when her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and dementia in 2017, she moved from New Orleans to Virginia, where she continued to work while caring for her mother.
Three years after her mom's death in 2020, Johnson's husband suffered a series of catastrophic medical events. To care for him full-time, she took a temporary leave and then quit her job this year. She relied on income from her job's deferred resignation program and her savings to pay for his long-term care. Johnson estimates her family spent over $700,000 in total between her mom's and husband's care. Coming up with that money has been harder, as her husband's income from medical disability retirement was quartered.
"I was one of those people who was taught that you don't quit, you suck it up, and you keep going," Johnson said. "I felt like I didn't have the luxury of falling apart, because if I fell apart, then who would pick up the slack?"

Interested in Veritone, Inc.? Here are five stocks we like better.

On July 28, GSK plc (NYSE:GSK) reported its second-quarter financial results, delivering strong core operational performance and showcasing steady commercial momentum. The firm's total Q2 turnover reached £8.4 billion, marking a 5% increase year-over-year at constant exchange rates (CER), while Core operating profit climbed 7% CER to £2.80 billion and Core EPS rose 9% CER to 50.5p. Growth was primarily fueled by double-digit gains in Specialty Medicines (+14% CER to £3.8 billion) and robust momentum in Vaccines (+8% CER to £2.3 billion). However, Total operating profit dropped 75% CER to £481 million, hit by a £1.3 billion non-cash impairment charge following the decision to discontinue camlipixant after CALM-1/2 Phase III trial results.
Alongside earnings, GSK outlined major strategic plans to accelerate its R&D roadmap. Management announced it expects 20+ Phase III trial starts in 2026, up from its previous projection of 10, focusing on 7 key **** et accelerations across 18 indications in oncology, respiratory, hepatology, and vaccines.
To support this pipeline expansion and fund late-stage development, GSK initiated its new 'Accelerate Growth' restructuring program. The three-year initiative aims to generate £1.9 billion in annual cost savings by 2029 for total costs of £2.4 billion, with savings earmarked for pipeline reinvestment and supporting operating margins through the dolutegravir loss-of-exclusivity period (2028–2030). Additionally, ViiV Healthcare, GSK's majority-owned HIV business, presented positive Phase IIIb VOGUE study data, reinforcing the efficacy and real-world utility of its long-acting HIV regimen portfolio.
This brings up a key question: Is GSK plc (NYSE:GSK)'s pipeline acceleration and core business growth enough to offset upcoming patent expiries, or does statutory margin volatility signal deeper pipeline execution risks ahead?
Bullish **** ysts highlight that GSK plc's core business model continues to show high execution efficiency, supported by key product launches and pipeline catalysts over the next 12 months that build confidence in reaching its £40 billion sales target by 2031. A critical driver is GSK plc's active business development strategy, illustrated by the acquisition of efimosfermin, which expands its hepatology portfolio, provides optionality for related liver diseases, and seamlessly aligns with corporate M&A goals.
