Portugal and Morocco will host the 2027 Dakar Rally the organisers announced on Friday after it was moved from Saudi Arabia following repeated attacks on the kingdom by Yemen's Houthis.
The drivers, motorcyclists and truck drivers will tackle the prologue and first special stage in Portugal followed by 11 stages of the gruelling rally -- covering almost 8,000 kilometres with 4,341km of specials -- in Morocco.
It is the first time since 2007 that the gruelling multi-stage rally, created in 1978, returns to Africa.
"Although it has been moved, the 49th edition of the Dakar will still meet the sporting standards which has always made the event the most demanding of endurance rallies," said race director David Castera.
"Despite the short amount of time we have had we have put together a real Dakar.

The Stillwater girls soccer team's hopes for reaching the state semifinals ended Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Mounds View during a state quarterfinal match at Spring Lake Park high school.
The Panthers struck first with 17 minutes left before halftime after midfielder Ida Wynn sent the ball cross net from the Ponies goalie Elin Hendrickson.
Mounds View took 6 shots on the Stillwater goal, coming up successful once in each half.
The second, and game deciding goal, found the net with 32 minutes left in the second half. Defensive midfielder Molly Nystrom beat Hendrickson at the net.
"It felt really awesome to score. I don't score a lot because I play center back," Nystrom said.

"Mary and her family sustained minor injuries but are in good spirits. Unfortunately, per the advice of medical professionals, Mary's upcoming events in Fairbanks and Bethel will be rescheduled for later in the week as she takes time to recover," Peltola campaign manager Cheryl Bruce said in a statement.
"Mary is disappointed that the accident is delaying the start of her Alaska Always Tour, and she is eager to get back on the campaign trail to speak directly with Alaskans about her plan to take on the rigged system and lower costs for working families," Bruce added.
Peltola was en route to the Alaska Federation of Natives' annual banquet Saturday when a vehicle transporting the candidate and her family was struck by another driver, according to the campaign. A spokesperson for the campaign said they had no reason to believe the accident had been politically motivated.

Chesham made a flying start, with Holly Fitzgerald and Ruby Slade scoring within two minutes of each other to put the hosts 2-0 ahead. Qinwen Zheng has battled unimaginable fitness concerns over the past few years, which threatened to completely derail such a promising start to her career.
Having emerged onto the scene as inarguably one of the most talented Chinese players of all time, she soon started achieving feats to back up such promise.
Deep runs in WTA 1000 and Grand Slam tournaments felt relatively regular, and culminated in her reaching the final of the Australian Open in 2024, and the Wuhan Open later that year.
Whilst she lost both matches, Qinwen Zheng was getting closer to snagging an elite honour before disaster struck.

Foden's had struck 27 times for Manchester City alone in 2023-24. The confirmation of her passing came through Paquita la del Barrio's official account. "Today, mother and daughter are reunited in heaven," reads a memorial note full of memories and respect. "There are goodbyes that hurt deeply and words that will never be enough to express the emptiness left by the loss of a loved one. Ukraine on Thursday accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians after 30 people were killed when two buses were blown up in the frontline city of Kramatorsk, in one of the deadliest single attacks for weeks.
Photos posted by local authorities showed the burnt-out metal shell of the vehicles, with the blurred-out images of bodies and debris strewn across the road.
Police said the buses were hit with a glide bomb.
The strikes come just a day after five children were among 22 killed when a Russian missile struck a five-storey apartment block in Pryluky, in the northern Chernigiv region.
"The Russians are deliberately targeting civilians," Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin said, accusing Moscow of flouting "every conceivable rule of warfare and norm of international humanitarian law".
