Demolition derbies are all about the destruction, but a crash in Ohio resulted in one driver being airlifted to the hospital as well as a lifetime ban for the other driver involved.
The crash happened at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, roughly halfway between Cincinnati and Columbus, on Saturday, July 25. The Washington Court House Record Herald reports that driver Hunter Wolf of Lynchburg, Ohio, delivered a direct hit to the driver-side door of a competitor, causing serious injuries to that driver.
Emergency crews extricated the victim from his vehicle and established a landing zone at the fairgrounds for a medical helicopter due to the severity of the driver's injuries. The Record Herald reports that the victim has not been identified and the extent of the injuries are not known.
Derbydog Inc., which organized the demolition derby, issued a lifetime ban to Wolf on Monday, July 27, according to a statement posted to Facebook by owners Jeremy and Frances Hejduk.
"While we can't absolutely know the intentions of every driver, the obvious nature of the direct driver's door hit by Hunter Wolf proves he has absolutely no concern for safety for fellow drivers," the Hejduks said in the statement. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated by Derbydog."

Ohio State has inked a jersey patch sponsorship deal with JPMorgan Chase, sources tell On3. The Buckeyes become the latest college football brand to add a jersey patch ahead of the 2026 season.
The deal spans the full athletic department and all 36 varsity sports. The investment also provides new resources to support Ohio State athletes through NIL opportunities, enhances the Buckeyes' overall competitive success and facilitates academic partnerships across the university.
Ohio State becomes one of the biggest college football brands to date to add a jersey patch to its uniform. The JPMorgan Chase logo will sit above the Big Ten patch on the front of Ohio State's jerseys.
JPMorgan Chase has a longstanding relationship with central Ohio, as one of Columbus' largest private employers. The firm has brought on more than 1,700 Ohio State alumni in the past five years, too. The deal was brokered by Learfield.

NHL trade rumors surrounding Kirill Marchenko intensified last week, but his agent has since poured cold water on reports linking the Columbus Blue Jackets forward to the Montreal Canadiens. The rumors gained traction after reports suggested Columbus was close to completing a blockbuster deal.
RG.org reported that Marchenko was "essentially between two teams" and that trade discussions were progressing. A source close to the winger said, "The parties are now negotiating the terms of the trade."
The speculation grew after an NHL ****** yst posted on X that the Canadiens were working on a complex three-team trade involving Columbus. The ****** yst added, "Montreal obviously has strong interest in Marchenko, but not just him."

We are deep into the offseason for the Ohio State basketball team, but the incoming freshmen have joined the fray and are going through workouts with all of the other pieces that have returned or were a part of the transfer portal haul. One of those freshmen is guard Alex Smith, a local product just a few miles from campus in Upper Arlington.
Many know about five-star freshman Anthony Thompson, but Smith is a bit of an unknown to most casual OSU fans, so the Ohio State Hoops X account decided to share a short video for you to get to know the 6-foot, 9-inch, power forward with a deft shooting touch.
"Alex showed up on campus ready to work. The one thing I know about Alex is his shooting will translate from Day 1," Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler said ... "I love the fact that Alex is from close by. He's a Buckeye fan. Has been his entire life, and this program means something to him, and you can't have too much of that in your locker room."

Ohio State will likely always be the king of sports in Columbus, but good on the local professional and semi-professional franchises for embracing that. The Columbus Clippers recently announced an Ohio State-themed game and custom jerseys, and the Columbus Blue Jackets paid homage to OSU when they played an outdoor game in the 'Shoe against the Detroit Red Wings.
Sometimes, the sports even cross, like the news we received on Thursday when the Ohio State women's hockey team announced the hiring of former Blue Jacket Jack Johnson. The former NHL defenseman played for Columbus from 2012-18 and then again for his final season in 2024-25. He carved out a niche for hitting and blocking shots while he wore the blue sweater, and now he'll be taking his knowledge to Nadine Muzerall's program.
"We're really excited to have a new member join our family here at Ohio State," Muzerall said in a release. "To bring in Jack Johnson is going to continue to make our program better, both on the ice and really contribute to recruiting. When we talk about Ohio State, we talk about family and how we're all united. I think it's very important that he exemplifies that. He's going to bring that to our program and I think our recruits are going to see that and I know our girls are going to feel that."
Johnson does bring a winning pedigree to Ohio State. He was a part of the Colorado Avalanche's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2022. He played his college hockey -- believe it or not -- at Michigan, so coming to the Buckeyes has to be a little bit awkward. Something tells me he'll fit in just fine.
"It's such a privilege and honor to be involved with the best women's college hockey program in the country," Johnson said. "I can't wait for the season to start and to continue Ohio State's pursuit of national championships."

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians activated outfielder Angel Martinez from the 10-day injured list and left-handed reliever Tim Herrin from the 15-day IL on Friday before the start of a series against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.
To make room on the roster, left-hander Will Dion and utility man Daniel Schneemann were optioned to Triple-A Columbus.
Cleveland (54-50) enters the weekend series against Tampa Bay 1 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the top spot in the AL Central.
Martinez, slotted in the leadoff spot to open the series against the Rays, missed 32 games with a fracture in his left foot after fouling a ball off the foot against Detroit on June 13. Martinez was placed on the injured list on June 16 with a non-displaced fracture and missed 32 games. The 24-year-old is hitting .239 with 33 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with 11 home runs.
Martinez appeared in four games on a rehab ******* ignment, playing twice with Double-A Akron and two games with Columbus, combining to go 5 for 12 with a home run and two doubles before joining the Guardians for a pregame workout on Thursday.

Sillinger, 23, has an arbitration hearing July 27 in Toronto, where Blue Jackets president/general manager Don Waddell and Greaves finally reached a $15 million pact less than an hour before a July 23 hearing. Fantilli, 21, is vacationing in Italy while his agent, Pat Brisson, continues talks with Waddell during the star center's first dabble in restricted free agency.
Waddell, who has roughly $17 million left in salary-cap ****** e, is confident both deals will get done without too many snags, starting with Sillinger.
"We've made progress from both sides, so I'm pretty confident we'll get that resolved before [July 27]," Waddell said. "They want to make a deal. We want to make a deal."

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Marcus L. Martin felt instant trepidation Sunday when he saw five adults wading thigh- and waist-deep in the Scioto River. A frequent boater on the Ohio waterway, the Baptist pastor knew the area where they were standing to be treacherous. He believes the people he captured in a photo to be the ill-fated group that drowned that day.
"I just remember being taught that area was kind of dangerous, in the sense of there being steep slopes" and a quick drop-off into the river, he told The ***** ociated Press. A few years earlier, Martin had warned a pair of young people playing in the water at that same spot to "be very careful."
He saw five adults in the water and two children playing on the grassy bank nearby, tracking the description of the group provided by Delaware County authorities after the drownings.
Martin and his family floated away to enjoy a beautiful summer evening. But when they returned past the spot about two hours later and saw the group still wading in the river, Martin thought to snap a photo.
"I don't know what it was. I said, I just need to capture this picture," he said.

LIMA — A Lima youth track and field team will send 22 city athletes to the 2026 American Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games, as announced Wednesday at Mayor Sharetta Smith’s media briefing in council chambers.
The former C2K Striders Track Club featured an expanded roster of nearly 90 kids this season, ages 5 to 18, after combining with the Columbus Panthers Track Club. Through the athletes’ perseverance in challenging weather conditions, Coach Roderick Simpson Jr. said, the now-C2K Panthers placed 45 athletes — 22 from Lima — in the youth track and field national championships, which run Saturday, Aug. 1 to Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Drake University stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The C2K Panthers are taking donations to fund their national championship trip and future travel. To donate, funds should be dedicated to the group through the Lima Community Foundation at 207 W. Elm St., Lima.
Simpson said that the team merger helped solidify the Lima club while they were “lacking certain things” to compete at the highest level. The personnel connections with the Columbus group played a large role in that fortification, Simpson said.
“That coach (in Columbus), he’s the one who started the program in Lima. He just ended up leaving for job purposes,” Simpson said. “That’s when (Coach Chris Jackson) took over. So, you know, it’s one big family.”

For nearly two decades, Larry Johnson has built defensive lines that have defined Ohio State football.
From Cameron Heyward and John Simon to Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, Chase Young, Sam Hubbard, Zach Harrison, J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer. The Buckeyes have consistently developed elite defensive linemen capable of taking over games and eventually becoming NFL stars.
So a lot of offseasons in Columbus bring the same question. Who is next? This year, the answer may not be one player. It may be an entire unit.

(NewsNation) — Gary Siders Jr., the Ohio father of 16 charged with child endangerment after his children were found living in a "house of horrors," was charged in four separate public indecency incidents over a nine-day span just a month before his arrest.
Siders, 36, was charged with four counts of public indecency before authorities raided his home in Hamden, a village about 75 miles south of Columbus. Court records obtained by People show the alleged incidents occurred May 23, 27, 29 and 31.

While details of the allegations were not available, court records indicate all four counts stem from an alleged violation of an Ohio law that prohibits "recklessly exposing the person's private parts."

(NewsNation) — Marriage and birth records reviewed by The Columbus Dispatch show at least three members of the Siders family wed while still teenagers themselves — including the woman now accused, alongside three relatives, of confining 16 children in filthy conditions inside a Vinton County home.
Elizabeth Russell was just 15 when she wed Gary Siders Jr. in West Virginia in 2008. By May of that year, two months after the wedding, she had given birth to the first of what would become 18 children over the next 17 years.
She isn't the only young bride in the family.

Jeremiah Smith is going to be one of the biggest names in college football this season, and it appears the most recent On3 changes in NIL valuations agree.
On3's revised NIL valuation system puts him at No. 5 across all of college sports with a reported $5 million market value. The number provides another reminder that Smith's impact is not just felt inside the box score but also in regard to brand exposure and national appeal.
Smith's ascent has been rapid since he arrived in Columbus. He was one of the most decorated recruits in the 2024 cycle and took very little time to become a household name and one of the best wide receivers in the country. He has already built partnerships with companies like Red Bull, Adidas, Nintendo, and Epic Games. As On3's data has climbed, so has the documentation that Smith isn't just a star receiver but a marquee brand name.
Being listed as No. 5 also suggests that Smith has transcended being just a top wide receiver, but has now entered the territory where he is a premium college sports property.
If Smith continues to produce at the level he has, there is a high likelihood he could own the wide receiver record books for Ohio State. And with that, his brand appeal will get even bigger, and he will have himself well set up before he has to play a single down in the NFL.

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Kirill Marchenko has emerged as a trade candidate after ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reported that his camp has indicated he is unlikely to sign a long-term extension with Columbus when eligible.
That development immediately caught Montreal’s attention.
Canadiens insider Marco D’Amico revealed the organization aggressively pursued Marchenko once the opportunity surfaced.

John Davidson is keeping his toe in the NHL pool, but the longtime executive and former TV ******* yst is no longer with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Blue Jackets' senior adviser since May 2024 and president of hockey operations in two stints before that is now senior adviser for the Buffalo Sabres, who announced the hiring July 13. The move reunites Davidson, 73, with former Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, the Sabres' GM whom Davidson hired for that role in Columbus in 2013.
Davidson also fired Kekalainen on Feb. 15, 2024, after the two signed off on the hiring of Mike Babcock as head coach, a stint that lasted just 78 days after the controversial coach was hired July 1, 2023, to succeed Brad Larsen.
Babcock resigned amid allegations that he violated players' privacy by pressuring them to show him photos on their cellphones. It ultimately led to an investigation by the NHL Players' ******* ociation followed by Kekalainen and Davidson taking the fall, with the former's eventual firing and the latter moving to a senior advisory spot in May 2024 after ******* isting a GM search that led to the Blue Jackets hiring Don Waddell as president/GM.
Davidson's contract ran out June 30.

The future of U.S. volleyball has a burnt-orange tinge.
Texas volleyball's Henley Anderson, Genevieve Harris, Taylor Harvey and Abby Vander Wal helped lead the U.S. squad to the 2026 NORCECA Women's under-21 Pan American Cup championship Sunday when Team USA swept Canada 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 in the gold medal match in Columbus, Ohio.
The U.S. completed the tournament with a 5-0 record with wins over Venezuela, Mexico and Canada during pool play before sweeping Mexico in the semifinals and Canada in the championship match. The Americans dropped just one set at the tournament.
The team included two rising Longhorns sophomores in middle blocker Harvey and outside hitter Vander Wal as well as two 2026 recruits in outside hitter Anderson and setter Harris. The 6-foot-3 Anderson, out of Dripping Springs, registered nine points in the gold medal match with four kills, three aces and two blocks. She started four of Team USA's five matches, highlighted by a team-high 17 points in a four-set pool-play victory over Canada on 13 kills and four aces before recording nine points in both the semifinal victory over Mexico as well as the championship match.

We are less than two months away from the start of the 2026 college football season, and it's shaping up to be quite a doozy for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. With Dante Moore and a long list of returning starters back for one last ride in Eugene, there are legitimate aspirations for a national championship this year.
Of course, it's not going to be easy by any means. The Ducks will play some of the top teams in the Big Ten this year, and they also have a couple of sneaky-challenging non-conference games. Four individuals and a state championship team are part of the latest class set to get inducted into the Portland High School Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.
Ryan Snellenberger, Andy Pohl, Andy Pulling, Jon Snellenbeger and the 2012 state championship Portland football team will be inducted in a ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Portland Knights of Columbus Hall.
Ryan Snellenberger is a 2004 graduate who excelled in football and basketball. Pohl graduated in 2001 and is being honored for his wrestling and football careers. Pullin, a 2003 graduate, was a wrestling standout. Jon Snellenberger is being recognized for his 50 years of coaching.
The Portland football team in 2012 captured the Division 5 state ***** le with a 12-9 win over Grand Rapids West Catholic.

A closer look at the conference landscape reveals that a flawless run might be an unrealistic expectation, even for a roster this loaded. ******* yst Brad Crawford’s latest game-by-game picks slate Ohio State for a 10-2 finish, forcing the Buckeyes to bypass an automatic conference-champion bid and instead rely on an at-large invitation to navigate the postseason.
The defining narrative of Ohio State's season might be written before conference play even begins. Following tune-up wins against Ball State and Kent State, Crawford's model projects a massive early-season stumble, predicting the Buckeyes will travel to Austin in Week 2 and suffer a non-conference loss to the Texas Longhorns.

Jake Diebler and the Ohio State basketball team may be in the middle of summer, but things are cooking for the Buckeyes. With the return of John Mobley Jr. and Amare Bynum, along with the additions of two five-star freshmen, OSU is hoping to make a run in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament this year. Diebler is trying to rebuild a program that hasn't had much success in recent years, and to do so, he'll need to keep adding talent to the roster.
The Henry name has become a fixture for Ohio State athletics. The Buckeyes welcomed Chris Henry Jr. to the football team earlier this year, and sister Seini Henry is a redshirt sophomore on the women's basketball team. Next in line is five-star forward DeMarcus Henry, whom Diebler hopes to lure to Columbus. He has held an offer from OSU since May of 2025. The younger brother is ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect by 247Sports, but has jumped up to the No. 3 player according to both Rivals and ESPN. He is the No. 1 small forward in the 2027 class.
There is no guarantee that the youngest son of former NFL star Chris Henry Sr. will come to Ohio State. However, having two older siblings already on campus can't hurt. For now, DeMarcus keeps rising up the rankings and could be another key piece in Diebler's rebuild of the Buckeyes.

"At the beginning of the season, I was throwing a 14-pound ball, and I couldn't get anything to carry," the Bellefontaine bowler said. "I was not scoring the way I wanted to, and I was so frustrated because it was my senior year and I felt like I had to do good."
Hood switched to a 15-pound ball midway through the high school season and it made all the difference. The Central Buckeye Conference girls' average leader won the Girls Division I State Bowling Tournament singles ***** le with a 679 series. The winning didn't stop there as Hood has won six tournaments since claiming the state ***** le in March.
The incoming Mount Mercy University bowler recently finished as runner-up to champion Ashlin Teves, of Illinois, at the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship. Teves edged out Hood, 258-227, for the ***** le at the Columbus Bowling Palace.
Second place, from a field of 250 of the best bowlers from across the country, was not a disappointment for Hood.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Padraig Harrington's first two U.S. Senior Open ****** les weren't decided until the final hole.
His record-tying third had no drama by the time he reached the back nine on Sunday.
Harrington became the fourth golfer to defend his U.S. Senior Open ****** le, shooting a final-round 66 to win by four shots at Scioto Country Club.
The 54-year-old Irishman also joined Miller Barber as the only three-time winners in the tournament's 46-year history.
"I like creating records, and to be part of that is a big deal. It just shows how hard it is," Harrington said after capturing his fourth senior major. "I'm seeing guys coming along, and I'm kind of realizing there is only a window to win these tournaments. They have told me and other players that it's kind of up to about 56-57, then it starts going downhill quickly.

The U.S. Men's National Soccer Team has advanced to Round 16 of the World Cup, and their next game is July 6 against Belgium. So, Columbus Crew is hosting another free World Cup watch party to don red, white and blue the after July 4 weekend.
The Columbus Crew Soccer Celebration will be at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field at the Chase Plaza, 96 Columbus Crew Way. The gates to the event open at 6:30 p.m., and the game is at 8 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public, though tickets are required. Free tickets can be reserved at cbuscrew.com/USMNTRd16.
The family-friendly event will have food and drinks available for purchase.
Soccer fans are encouraged to bring clear plastic water bottles to utilize water-refilling stations. Picnic blankets and chairs are also recommended as the watch party will be at the Chase Plaza, not in the stadium seats.

To Brian: News that CBJ players Werenski and Marchenko are not wanting to stay in Columbus after their current contracts end is very disappointing to say the least. Also, remembering the terrific Columbus Crew players, Cucho, Zelarayan, and Aidan Morris that we have lost to other clubs/cities makes you wonder what’s wrong with Columbus. Are we chopped liver, or what? Or maybe something worse? Columbus seems to be a great place for professional athletes to develop but not to stay long term. Why can’t Columbus keep the star players that can help us win the big games? It can make a loyal CBJ and Crew supporter sleepless. We can only hope. But, hope is a good thing.

To Sleepless, er, Chet: I think the Blue Jackets part is pretty easy: Players want to win, and the Blue Jackets never win. Rebuilds get old for players who see their friends in the playoffs and winning ***** les. As for the Crew, that's how the MLS works. It is a minor league for the better leagues in the world. When players are deemed good enough to move up, it is in the Crew's best interests to set them free rather than hold them hostage.
