MASSILLON — Up by seven with under a minute left in the second quarter and halftime looming, Smithville had the ball on offense right at the midway part of the field. By the look of things, one might ******* ume that Smithville should just take a knee and head into the half.
That was not their thinking.
Looking for an opportunity to strike, Smithville quarterback Brady Sidle dropped back and threw a deep ball down the right side that wide receiver Isaiah Lee went up and caught. Near the goal line Smithville stood. Three plays later, with a three-wide-receiver-set, Sidle rolled to his right out of the shotgun and found Brayden Beard for a touchdown.
That drive alone described just how much emphasize the Smithies are putting on their passing game this season as they came away with a 21-14 road win in Week 1 against Tuslaw.

Jackson High School graduate Dillon Dingler of the Detroit Tigers has joined select Stark County baseball company.
Dingler, a catcher, was named to his first Major League Baseball All-Star team on Saturday, July 4. The game is in Philadelphia at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14. It will be televised by Fox.
Dingler is just the third Stark County native to be selected to the MLB All-Star Game, and the first in nearly 50 years.
Based on Repository research, Yankees legend and Canton native Thurman Munson is the last county player to be selected. He was a seven-time All-Star, with his last selection coming in 1978. Another Yankee, 1940s and 50s star Tommy Henrich of Massillon, is the other Stark County player to be selected to the All-Star Game.
"He's playing at the top of the game at a position that's really hard to play, and I say that with all respect to every position, as catcher-biased as I am," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told the Detroit Free Press. "He's doing incredible things."

Westerville North’s Tony Cornett III has steadily built up a strong list of college offers. Since the start of May, the 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard has added ones from Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo as summer camp season has gotten underway.
Now with offers from 10 schools, including one from every Mid-American Conference school in Ohio, Cornett said the mission isn’t complete because it’s never complete.
“I feel like it’s more fuel for me,” he said of the recent offers from the Zips, Falcons and Rockets. “None of the offers I’ve gotten, I’m satisfied with. It won’t be a single offer that will make me fully satisfied because it’s like, why would I be satisfied with that offer? The job’s never finished.”
It’s an attitude that has helped Cornett and the Warriors reach the Ohio Division II **** le game in each of the past two years, winning the championship in 2025 and falling in overtime in 2026. In this year’s five-point loss to Massillon Washington, Cornett had 15 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four turnovers in 35 minutes.
On June 5, he was on the main court inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center as Westerville North participated in Ohio State’s team camp for the second consecutive day. The Warriors opened the day with a blowout win against Massillon Jackson with multiple members of the Ohio State coaching staff keeping an eye on the game.
