Gary Neville believes Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday is a positive stride in the right direction.
United were on course for victory after Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead in the 35th minute.
The 27-year-old had failed to hit the target with a free header but quickly made amends by battling past James Justin to fire home Youri Tieleman's excellent pass.
Leeds came out much improved after the break and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the equaliser in the 51st minute.
Both teams had chances to win the game but neither could find the decisive finish as the points were shared.

Michael Douglas has finally revealed why he refused to appear on David Letterman's talk show for almost two decades.
In his new memoir One ****** uva Ride, the Wall Street actor recounted how he had promoted various projects on the Late Show with David Letterman.
"I had been a regular guest on Letterman's show earlier in my career, but the last time I was on, I felt David went too far," he shared.
Douglas went on to recall how Letterman had played "without warning" a TV commercial that his actress mother, Diana Dill, had appeared in.
"(Letterman) started grilling me about it. It felt like he was making fun of my mother," the 82-year-old continued. "(That appearance) left me feeling like he had a real nasty sense of humour... After that, whenever the producers of the show requested to have me back on, I always refused. I said no for 18 straight years. Dave wrote me personal letters to apologise, but my feelings didn't change. He had crossed a line."
However, Douglas decided to "bury the hatchet" and announce that he was battling advanced tongue cancer during an interview on the Late Show with David Letterman while promoting his movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in 2010. He has since recovered from the cancer after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Another season begins with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants battling each other to start 1-0 in the NFC East race. Lately it's been the Cowboys getting the wins, especially when Dak Prescott is under center.
Things have a way of getting turned around when it comes to rivalries. Despite the Cowboys owning the matchups in the last 10 years, the Giants could be primed to make things more difficult. New York has made some significant changes this offseason that will challenge the Cowboys.
Here are three reasons to hate playing the Giants on Sunday night football to open the season.
Despite dominating the games between the two teams recently, the Cowboys need to be wary of a Giants team that's turned over their franchise to a Super Bowl winning coach. John Harbaugh arrives with a winning pedigree and a 4-1 record against the Cowboys, who have been feasting on poor coaches in New York since Tom Coughlin left.
The Giants' culture has changed with Harbaugh's arrival, and the first matchup with a new regime always brings surprises. Harbaugh's a veteran coach, but he hired Matt Nagy as his offensive coordinator, with whom he's never worked with as his OC, and Dennard Wilson is a first-time defensive coordinator. That can make for the Cowboys seeing some things they haven't seen from the Giants on both sides of the ball.

The Amgen Irish Open at Trump International Doonbeg has turned into a story of resilience and record-breaking golf. While the first round saw players battling wind and rain that made the course play brutally difficult, the second round brought a dramatic shift in fortune. Shane Lowry, the local favorite, didn't just survive the conditions; he absolutely dominated them. After airing his frustration with the slow pace caused by the weather in the opening round, Lowry produced a stunning performance to take the lead. Golf Monthly reports that Lowry shot a record-breaking 62 under much kinder conditions to take the lead at the midpoint. This score puts him two shots clear of the field and sets the stage for a thrilling weekend.
The contrast between the two rounds couldn't be starker. The first day was defined by struggle, with Golf Monthly noting that the brutal conditions contributed to slow play across the property. Players like Lowry had to wait for groups ahead, testing their patience. Yet, when the wind died down, Lowry found his rhythm. He isn't alone in the hunt, however. The chasing pack is packed with talent, including defending champion Rory McIlroy, two-time Major winner Jon Rahm, and Brooks Koepka, all of whom Golf Monthly confirmed will join Lowry in the third round. Joaquin Niemann, the first-round leader, also remains in contention to challenge the Irishman.
While Lowry's score grabs the headlines, the most compelling story of the week might be the rise of Niklas Nørgaard. The Danish golfer has moved into a tie for second place alongside Jacob Skov Olesen and Haotong Li after posting matching 64s, according to europeantour.com. This surge came from a fundamental change in how Nørgaard approached the game, not just better ball-striking. The pressure of competition often weighs heavy, but Nørgaard found a way to lighten the load. A shift in mindset this week earned praise for his caddie, as he disclosed that his coach is actually riding in the bag during this event.
Nørgaard explained his strategy directly to the media, and the result was immediate. Europeantour.com notes that Nørgaard received late applause from spectators after draining a vital putt on the 18th and finishing his round with a closing birdie to enter the chase. His back nine was a blur of birdies, specifically a burst from the 14th to 16th holes that propelled him up the leaderboard. You have to wonder if that mental shift is the only thing standing between him and a ***** le run, considering how tight the field really is.
Other players faced different challenges. Thomas Detry made an albatross at the par-5 10th in the opening round, a rare feat that should have boosted his day. However, he finished the first day with a 74 and ultimately missed the cut, according to Golf Monthly. On the other side of the field, David Puig struggled to find consistency. Following a 71 in the opening round that left him one over par, he posted the exact same score during the second rou

NEW DELHI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - India's Serious Fraud Office has recommended Xiaomi be investigated for alleged irregularities in its business model and compliance with foreign investment law, potentially intensifying scrutiny of the smartphone maker, a government document shows.
China's Xiaomi was once India's top-selling smartphone brand but has seen its market share dwindle amid intense competition from Apple and Samsung. It is also battling several tax demands and royalty payment disputes.
The recommendation from India's Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) said the investigation should examine movement of funds and whether Xiaomi sought mandatory investment approvals as required after India tightened scrutiny of Chinese investments following deadly border clashes between the two nations in 2020.
A person familiar with the matter said the government is examining the memorandum, which was drafted in May and reviewed by Reuters.

Rangers news: Jacob deGrom's strong start ends with concerning injury update appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Texas Rangers star pitcher Jacob deGrom pitched well on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners. However, he was removed after throwing 92 pitches through six innings, a decision that Rangers manager Skip Schumaker later said was due to an injury concern, via Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.
"Skip Schumaker said that Jacob deGrom was dealing with groin tightness through much of his start today. That's what the mound visit was about in the sixth and that's also why he didn't come back out for the seventh," Landry reported.
deGrom was indeed terrific while on the mound despite battling groin tightness throughout the outing. The veteran right-hander struck out 12 Mariners through six innings while allowing no runs and only one hit. Disaster struck following deGrom's departure from the contest, as Jakob Junis allowed four runs. The Rangers were defeated 4-3, a loss that dealt a blow to a team that is competing for a postseason spot.

The Atlanta Braves continue battling to remain atop the National League East as the 2026 MLB regular season enters its most important stretch.
Entering Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with an 85-61 record, the Braves hold a three-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the division. The Braves have lost three straight ahead of Thursday's matchup and will look to get back on track to maintain their division lead.
MORE: Brewers demote struggling player after sweeping Cubs
One of Atlanta's strengths this season has been its catching tandem of Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy. Baldwin has continued to establish himself as one of the Braves' most important young players, while Murphy provides an experienced defensive presence behind the plate.
With October approaching, Atlanta is comfortable with Baldwin and Murphy handling the position. However, the team quietly added some insurance behind them.

Frenchman Arthur Gea failed to convert a match point which would have seen him make history as the first lucky loser to ever reach the quarter-finals of the US Open.
Instead the 21-year-old fell in a gruelling five-set encounter with Botic van de Zandschulp, having also failed to serve out victory when he had the chance in the fourth set.
Three hours after holding match point the world No 87 was out, with van de Zandschulp battling back to win 3-6 6-7 (0-7) 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in five hours and 13 minutes - the fourth-longest match on record in New York.
Gea had to go through qualifying as his ranking was not high enough to automatically qualify for the main draw at the time entry lists were published. He lost to Nishesh Basavareddy in the final round of qualifying but was granted a reprieve when former runner-up Casper Ruud withdrew with injury before the tournament began, taking the Norwegian's place.
Gea seized his opportunity by making the fourth round but could not get past world No 70 van de Zandschulp, although he may take some comfort in his prize money of $480,000 - more than seven times the $66,000 he had expected to earn through qualifying.

Florida State spent much of Monday night chasing the game, but after battling back to tie SMU in the fourth quarter, the Seminoles could not find one final stop or scoring drive.
In a game delayed by a power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium and stretched deep into the night, FSU showed more resilience than it did in its season opener. However, the same issues that have plagued the Seminoles through two games, inconsistent quarterback play, offensive line struggles and third-down defensive lapses, resurfaced in a 27-24 loss to SMU.
The Seminoles dropped to 1-1 on the season despite erasing multiple deficits and tying the game at 24 before the Mustangs answered with the decisive touchdown drive.
Here are the grades from Florida State's loss to SMU.
Daniels spent much of the night under constant pressure and rarely looked comfortable in the pocket. While there were flashes of playmaking ability, including a quarterback keeper for a touchdown and several throws into tight coverage, consistency remained an issue.

Christopher Bell finally broke through when it mattered most.
Bell won the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday night, capturing his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the 2026 season and opening the Chase with a massive statement win. The victory was Bell's 14th career Cup Series win and ended a frustrating stretch of near-misses that had seen him finish runner-up seven times.
Tyler Reddick entered Darlington with plenty of momentum and started the race from the pole after weather forced NASCAR to cancel qualifying.
Reddick immediately showed why he was considered one of the favorites, winning the opening stage after battling with Denny Hamlin throughout the first portion of the race. Bubba Wallace and Hamlin remained near the front as the field dealt with Darlington's notoriously difficult tire-wear conditions.
Reddick's strong start put him in position to score valuable playoff points, but the race was far from over.

OGC Nice secured their second point of the season against a battling Le Mans FC side (1-1). Olivier Pantaloni remains winless, however, after taking over in the summer.
Patrick Videira is credited with creating something special from very little. His side weren't even in the conversation for promotion at the start of last season, having only earned promotion from the National 1 the previous season. There is a clear upward direction of travel; the opposite can be said of Nice. Olivier Pantaloni's arrival was meant to bring fresh momentum, but that isn't easy when the ownership situation remains unchanged.
Club legend Dante was back at the Allianz Riviera, whilst the fans also returned for the first time this season. There was a feeling of yester-season that translated onto the pitch as Le Gym struggled to find any kind of fluency on the ball. Errors were too frequent and punished. There was a let-off when Jean Vercruysse found himself free inside the box. Youssouf Ndayishimiye made himself big and made the block. But it was the Burundi international who was left scrambling following a turnover of possession deep in the Nice half. Ndayishimiye didn't lose it, but he couldn't win it back. Adil Bourabaa danced past him and unleashed an absolute thunderbolt into the far corner of Yehvann Diouf's goal.
The game-state ensured that Nice had much of the ball but Pantaloni's men lacked penetration. Their best chance within the opening 30 minutes came from a set-piece quickly taken by Niels Nkounkou. Jonathan Clauss had all the time to pick out the unmarked Axel Witsel, who couldn't direct his header on target. A let-off for Videira's side.

OGC Nice secured their second point of the season against a battling Le Mans FC side (1-1). Olivier Pantaloni remains winless, however, after taking over in the summer.
Patrick Videira is credited with creating something special from very little. Sep. 4—WILSON CREEK — The Wilson Creek Devils are ready for another season of volleyball as they return a little younger, but still experienced. This year, the Devils are striving to become more unified and play together as one.
"I'm looking forward to watching this team come together and do something great," said Devils Head Coach Shawn Shahan. "See them combine and work together and become one team. That's our motto this year is 'One team, one goal.'"
Wilson Creek finished the season 6-14 last year and qualified for the district tournament after battling through the highly competitive Central Washington B League. The Devils made it into the first round of districts before ending their season against Easton.
Last year the Devils roster consisted of mostly younger players with the team being led by a group of juniors and no seniors. Although the team lost a few players in the offseason, Wilson Creek will be returning Cheyanne Dailey, Debi Horn, Lila Sackmann and Riley Larsen as seniors.
Shahan said she is confident in the girls who are returning this season to act as strong leaders for the team and has already seen them step up and work with their younger teammates.

The starting right guard position for the Cleveland Browns is currently up in the air, with veteran Teven Jenkins battling an injury, though he was able to return to practice on Wednesday after missing Monday's practice. Wednesday's practice is Cleveland's final practice of the week before a short break, ahead of next week's season opener.
Before Wednesday's practice, Browns head coach Todd Monken said that if Jenkins couldn't go, they would see rookie offensive lineman Austin Barber getting reps as the team's starting right guard. This likely means that after two strong preseason games playing inside, Barber has earned the backup right guard role, and the team is confident in him if Jenkins isn't available.
Barber looks like he might have a future on the interior of the offensive line and was PFF's highest-graded rookie offensive tackle of the preseason with an 82.8 grade, though again most of his high-level play came at the guard position. Teven Jenkins has a long injury history, so more likely than not, we will see Barber get his shot at some point this season.

A win at Darlington counts the same in the standings as any other NASCAR Cup Series victory. But the Southern 500 has never been just another race.
First run in 1950, the Southern 500 has grown into one of NASCAR's crown-jewel races, combining more than 75 years of history with a Labor Day tradition and a winner's list filled with some of the sport's biggest names.
Why the Southern 500 Is One of NASCAR's Crown-Jewel Races
Darlington Raceway opened in 1950 as NASCAR's first paved superspeedway and hosted the inaugural Southern 500. Seventy-five cars entered and roughly 25,000 fans showed up to watch, but it was Johnny Mantz, the slowest qualifier in the entire field, who ultimately won. While other drivers spent the race battling tire failures, Mantz used hard-compound truck tires to outlast the field and drive his way into NASCAR history. Darlington Raceway
Over the decades, the Southern 500 became closely tied to Labor Day weekend and established itself among NASCAR's biggest events. Its status was reinforced in 1985 when the race became one of four included in the Winston Million, a $1 million bonus available to a driver who could win three of NASCAR's major races. Bill Elliott secured the bonus by winning the Southern 500 that year, and Jeff Gordon repeated the accomplishment in 1997. NASCAR

The Miami Dolphins weren't impressed by their trio of quarterbacks battling to back up Malik Willis this preseason, which led the team to trade Quinn Ewers and cut both Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski over the weekend.
While these moves left Miami without a quarterback, they quickly pivoted and completed a trade with the Green Bay Packers to acquire Kyle McCord, who completed 65.7% of his passes for 446 yards and four touchdowns in the preseason.
Speaking with the media this week, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst explained the decision to move on from the 23-year-old.
"He played so well during the preseason. We were contemplating, do we keep three? Do we try to get him to the practice squad, what's the likelihood of that? When somebody calls you and starts talking about a trade, the likelihood of getting him to the practice squad probably isn't strong," Gutekunst said. "It's always (tough), whenever you trade a player that you like and you think has an upside, but he wasn't going to be the No. 2 here most likely, and heading into next year, who knows? It's our job to find the next guy, and develop the next guy. That's what we do. That's what we'll do moving forward."
Instead of rolling with McCord as Jordan Love's backup, the Packers took the sixth-round pick they got in return and will have Tyrod Taylor step in if their starter goes down in 2026.

GameStop (GME) has more than a meme-stock reputation riding on its upcoming earnings report. The video game and collectibles retailer has been battling a shrinking core business, with sales declining in each of the past four fiscal years. At the same time, concerns about share dilution and the company's ability to drive sustainable retail growth have continued to weigh on investor sentiment. Still, GameStop's preliminary fiscal 2026 second-quarter results, released on Aug. 31, may have given investors something to watch.
The company expects quarterly net income of $290 million to $310 million, almost double the $168.6 million reported a year earlier. But there's a catch. The stronger bottom line isn't being driven by a rebound in game sales. Instead, investment gains, particularly from GameStop's stake in eBay (EBAY), are doing much of the heavy lifting, while quarterly sales are expected to decline to $780 million-$800 million from $972.2 million a year ago.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are bringing back Blake Treinen from the injured list after battling shoulder fatigue that kept him out for a month.
In a corresponding move, the Dodgers are moving Will Klein to the 60-Day Injured List and putting lefty Eric Lauer on the IL with left elbow inflammation.
Treinen has been diligently nursing himself back to health after taking time off to stop throwing and then ramping up slowly, including rehab appearances in the minors and live batting practice.
Now, gets the chance to return in time for a possible postseason impression after a decent run during the regular season thus far.

Dolly Parton's family is opening up about her private cancer battle.
Jada Star, Parton's niece and a singer who appeared on "Claim to Fame," told Extra in an interview published Tuesday, Sept. 1, that the country star's death was "really difficult and very surreal" but "bittersweet" given the outpouring of love she and her loved ones received.
"All of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it," Star told the outlet.
The beloved cultural icon and "Queen of Country" died Aug. 25 at 80, surrounded by loved ones at a Nashville medical center after briefly battling cancer, her representatives confirmed to USA TODAY.
Star, the daughter of Parton's sister Frieda Parton, said the singer wouldn't want them to grieve forever.

Another Premier League season is officially underway, and despite the usual dose of high hopes for Chelsea, the flagship football club finds itself embroiled in more uncertainty than it ever expected.
Minority stakeholders Mark Walter and Todd Boehly, who own a combined 26 percent (13 percent apiece) of Chelsea, are reportedly in talks to sell their shares to Clearlake Capital, which already controls around 61.5 percent of the franchise. To be sure, the talks between Boehly and Clearlake, specifically, are not new. The sides have discussed an ownership stake exchange in the past, albeit to no avail.
This time around, however, another is added to the equation: Walter, who recently sold the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers and also owns MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers, is under federal investigation for misreporting what's known as related-party loans among his own business ventures. Though nothing has been finalized, Walter's dilemma injects previously unheard-of urgency into the equation.
The news is another blow to Chelsea fans who have grown to distrust the current ownership regime. Their skepticism is not without merit, either. Just as sports betting enthusiasts will search "Is Betonline legit" when shopping around for a place to make wagers, they along with the EPL at large probably need to be wondering whether this Chelsea ownership group is, in fact, built to lead the club into the future.
While Walter's current legal situation raises all sorts of red flags as purchase talks continue, this is far from the first time these parties have found themselves battling murky circumstances.

An old rivalry with a new twist.
Colorado State and Wyoming have been battling in football since the late 1800s, but the 2026 edition brings much change.
The Border War rivals have long shared the same conference, but have now split as CSU is in the new Pac-12 and Wyoming is still in the Mountain West.
It means a season-opening matchup on Sept. 5 at Canvas Stadium. Here's what to know about the history of the Border War and Bronze Boot:
Army Capt. Daniel J. Romero, a Pueblo native, wore the boot while serving in Vietnam. He offered up his boot upon returning home and being **** igned to the ROTC program at Colorado State University.

Following a 9-8, 10-inning win for Boston in the opener last night, the Mariners (64-74) and the Red Sox (75-63) continue their three-game series tonight at Fenway.
Seattle appeared poised to steal the opener after battling back and generating offense throughout the night. The Mariners totaled 11 hits receiving contributions up and down the lineup. The Sox got one more hit and ultimately, one more run. They forced extra innings with two runs in the eighth on a Trevor Story double and one in the ninth on a sac fly from Ceddanne Rafaela before Story again picked up a big hit in the tenth, a single to center, driving in Eli White to win it for the Red Sox. Aroldis Chapman picked up the win. Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh went yard for the Mariners, but it was not enough.
Seattle closed the month of August with five straight losses and now sit six games behind the Astros in the AL West and 5.5 games behind the Guardians for the final Wild Card spot. The Red Sox snapped a brief two-game losing streak with the win to pull within three games of the Yankees and the top Wild Card spot in the American League.
Seattle looks to snap the skid with right-hander Bryan Woo (9-9, 4.36 ERA) on the ******* p. Woo's most recent outing came August 26 against Philadelphia, and it was one of his rougher starts of the year. The Phillies tagged him for six earned runs on five hits over four innings, including a pair of home runs. He struck out five but was unable to work deep into the game as Seattle lost 6-0. The righthander fared far better in his previous two starts. He allowed two runs in six innings at Houston on August 16 and threw five scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium on August 11. The Red Sox have yet to announce their starter for tonight. It was Sonny Gray's (16-4, 2.79 ERA) turn to take the ball but Boston earlier announced they planned to give him an extra day of rest.
Lets dive further into today's game and find a sweat or two.
