This one had everything. Troy Melton struggled and got knocked out early, but the bullpen managed to bend without breaking. Meanwhile, the young Tigers hitters were centre stage as they fought back repeatedly with good at-bats late in this one. Kenley Jansen picked up his 496th major league save to wrap up the victory.
Monday night's first of three at the Rogers Centre featured Melton against right-hander José Soriano. The Blue Jays have had almost as strange a season as the Tigers. Struggling through the first half, they moved long time top starter Kevin Gausman, but acquired Soriano at the deadline as well, and have kept themselves in the thick of the wild card race.
Things didn't start off too well as the Tigers quickly went 1-2-3 in the first, and Melton immediately dug himself a hole. Brett Bateman led off by slashing a single the opposite way past a diving Hao-Yu Lee for a leadoff single. Bateman appeared to be thrown out stealing second on a pitch that was called a ball and incorrectly challenged by Dillon Dingler to walk George Springer. So everyone was safe, and after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to advance the runners, Alejandro Kirk singled home Bateman for a 1-0 lead.
Melton didn't help his cause against Nathan Lukes by yanking a wild pitch to score Springer, but he retired Lukes and Kazuma Okamoto flew out to Clark to end the first inning. 2-0 Blue Jays.
A Dingler strikeout started the second inning, and Max Clark and Brett Callahan grounded out.

Stoke City centre-half Luke Graham and Sevilla striker Robbie Ure will receive their first full Scotland call-ups on Tuesday when Sebastien Pocognoli names his first squad as head coach.
Graham was part of Scotland's pre-World Cup training camp in May after a breakthrough campaign with Dundee, winning the Scottish Premiership club's players' player and young player of the year awards.
The 22-year-old was an unused substitute in the country's send-off friendly win against Curacao, which was also Steve Clarke's last game in the dugout at Hampden Park.
The defender, who has three caps at under-21 level, has started strongly for The Potters in the Championship, who are unbeaten in their last four games, with Graham an ever-present.
Former Rangers academy product Ure was in demand across Europe after a free-scoring spell - 20 goals and three **** ists in 20 matches - that took Sirius to the top of the table in Sweden and it resulted in a £5.5m summer transfer to La Liga with Sevilla.

Barcelona star Eric García has this week revealed his take that the podium for this year's Ballon d'Or award should be filled entirely by teammates from Hansi Flick's squad.
The subject of the upcoming 'Golden Ball' ceremony has of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya's capital over the course of the last week.
This comes owing not only to those Barcelona stars included on the 30-man shortlist, but also those left off.
Featuring front and centre were Blaugrana trio Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Pau Cubarsí, as well as the recently departed Ferran Torres. Surprisingly nowhere to be seen on the shortlist, though, were either Pedri or Raphinha.
Speaking during an interview with Cadena SER on Monday, the aforementioned Eric García was in turn asked for his take on the race to be named world football's best player for 2026.

HONG KONG, Sept 14 (Reuters) - The Himalayas are approaching a tipping point as glaciers melt faster than a decade ago, threatening water security as the region approaches "peak water" by mid-century, according to a study released this month.
The findings come after the collapse of a Himalayan glacier in late August along the Nepal-Tibet border, which caused cascading landslides and flash floods in the valleys below. At least 1,300 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,300 are missing across Nepal and China's Tibet region.
As glaciers retreat, they are leaving behind unstable glacial lakes held back by little more than loose rock and ice, above valleys where millions of people live, the study found.
The study was produced by Systemiq, a sustainability advisory firm, together with the Integrated Mountain Initiative, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, and India's G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment.
Himalayan glacier mass loss had accelerated in recent decades, while only 21 glaciers were currently monitored on the ground out of an estimated 40,000 glaciers across the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region, a vast mountain system spanning eight countries from Afghanistan to Myanmar, the study found.

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth says he wants his players to follow the example of tireless midfielder Robbie McKenzie.
The 27-year-old former Hull player remains a key cog in the centre of the park for the Gills, and is closing in on 250 appearances for the club.
"We've had chats, me and Robbie, and I'm loving seeing the way he's playing at the moment," Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent.
"He's coming off because he's got nothing left. That's what I want all my players to do, empty the tanks.
"That's my sort of team. We've got to be fit in this league, but organised and also defensively solid."

Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The planned West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George has been delayed to 2028.
Empire Street Productions announced Monday that the musical "will no longer proceed as scheduled" in 2027, with the company to "retain the rights with a view to presenting the production in 2028."
The news follows word that Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey have dropped out of the production. Grande announced in August that she "will be taking a step back from visibility" after the conclusion of her Eternal Sunshine tour, with Bailey later confirming he has "decided to also step back" from the revival.
Sunday in the Park with George features music and lyrics by famed composer Stephen Sondheim. The musical, inspired by the Georges Seurat painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, debuted on Broadway in 1984 and on West End in 2006.
Marianne Elliot was to direct the West End revival, which was originally scheduled to open at London's Barbican Centre in summer 2027.

Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey's planned reunion will no longer happen after their exits from a new project. The two stars previously appeared together in the blockbuster Wicked franchise, playing Glinda and Prince Fiyero Tigelaar, respectively.
The London revival of the popular musical Sunday in the Park With George has been canceled following Grande and Bailey's exits, according to Variety. The planned 2027 production will no longer proceed as previously thought.
"Empire Street Productions will retain the rights with a view to presenting the production in 2028. Further details will be announced in due course."
The revival was set to take place at London's Barbican Centre next summer. Ariana Grande was supposed to play both Dot and Marie. Bailey was set to star opposite her as George Seurat.
Moving forward, Ariana Grande will be busy with her upcoming The Eternal Sunshine Tour. She will also appear on the big screen in a new movie. The 33-year-old will feature alongside Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller in the comedy Focker-In-Law. It's set to hit theaters on November 25, 2026. Despite her plans to take a break, Grande will appear in the promotional events for the movie.

Sept 14 - Novo Nordisk is changing its day-to-day name to 'Novo', and taking a new approach to company culture as it looks to claw back ground in the fierce obesity drug race, the Danish drugmaker said on Monday.
• Novo, which is slated to unveil details on its business strategy during a Capital Markets Day on September 21, will keep 'Novo Nordisk A/S' as its legal name.
• The company set out on Monday a new cultural strategy it called "The Novo Way", centred around four principles — customer obsession, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity.
• The move comes as it faces fierce competition from rival weight-loss drug maker Eli Lilly, investor pressure to deliver new blockbusters, and setbacks to its medicine pipeline.
• The company's Copenhagen shares are down nearly 15% this year, even as its oral GLP-1 outpaces Eli Lilly by hundreds of thousands of U.S. prescriptions per week, according to IQVIA data provided by an ****** yst.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick should play forward Benjamin Sesko as his side are offering "no danger" through the middle, says former Premier League striker Charlie Austin.
Matheus Cunha started in the striker position with Bruno Fernandes behind him and Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford on the wings on Sunday. However, his side were largely blunt in the 1-0 derby defeat by rivals Manchester City, despite playing against 10 men for almost 70 minutes, and register a lower xG (expected goals) than their opponents.
Sesko was eventually introduced midway through the second half but could not turn the tie around.
"I don't think we should allow VAR and those moments to overshadow the fact that Manchester United were poor," Austin told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.
"They don't play with a number nine. They had 10 versus 11 and didn't have a number nine. Cunha is not a nine, he is a 10 or he plays wide. He is never occupying the two centre backs or he drops in.

The latest addition to the Formula 1 calendar had already sparked plenty of discussion in the paddock before the weekend. Most of the conversations centred on safety and whether the track around the IFEMA complex would actually prove to be a 'car killer', as several teams feared after the rather chaotic F3 test.
Another aspect that attracted plenty of interest was La Monumental, Turn 12 of the new circuit. It is the corner with 13.5 degrees of banking, which equates to an incline of around 24%.
This is less than the final corner at Zandvoort – the Arie Luyendyk corner has 18 degrees of banking – but despite that, Pirelli describes La Monumental as the toughest corner on the entire F1 calendar for the tyres.
"Basically the peak of the vertical energy is not higher than in other corners that we have in the calendar, like in Qatar, the banking in Zandvoort, et cetera. It's more about the time you are under load and the continuous load that you have," Pirelli's chief engineer Simone Berra explained.
"So basically instead of two or three seconds, you have 5.5 seconds under those loads. So you have double the duty cycle in that area. That is the main thing to keep in mind and what we are considering in our calculations."

PAWTUCKET – Jim Fleming wasn't interested in capping his team's best drive of the day with a field goal.
A short kick would have meant the lead early in the fourth quarter at Centreville Bank Stadium, but the University of Rhode Island coach felt more was needed. The Rams hadn't come all the way out from their own 2 to settle.
Terrence Campbell smashed up the middle from 1 yard out, a touchdown that served as fuel for No. 8 URI over the final 15 minutes. What was a frustrating, tense start to this Coastal Athletic ***** ociation opener with Elon wound up a relatively comfortable victory.
The Rams forced five turnovers and finally found some offensive rhythm in the second half while posting a 31-10 triumph on brilliant Saturday afternoon, Sept. 12. That's now 16 straight for URI in home games, and this temporary residence while Meade Stadium undergoes its extensive renovation was christened properly.
"You were wondering what the heck was going on in the first half," Fleming said. "As is representative of this group, they continue to go ahead and find ways."

If part of the challenge for Andoni Iraola when he took the Liverpool job was mastering the art of winning Premier League games after midweek Champions League dates, he failed his first test. An Anfield afternoon against a side with the wrong sort of 100 percent record ought to have been the ideal introduction to such ******* ignments.
Instead, Fulham got their first point of the season. A Spanish manager with a playing career at right-back had much to savour; but it was Alvaro Arbeloa, not Iraola. A terrific defender under Rafa Benitez, Arbeloa contributed to many a clean sheet in his time at Liverpool. Now Fulham have a first in the Premier League in his reign. Having conceded three goals to left wing-backs against Crystal Palace last week, they conceded none to Liverpool's three £100m men.
Alvaro Arbeloa could celebrate a first point in the Premier League with Fulham (Getty)
"Happy with the point and more happy with the performance," said Arbeloa. "We were more balanced today. We defended so well." He had made the bold decision to give the Austrian centre-back David Affengruber a debut at Anfield. "He proved how good he is," Arbeloa said.
But Iraola's side delivered a disjointed display, failing to touch the heights they reached in their comeback against Atletico Madrid and failing to score for the first time under him. "What was lacking was quite clear. It is the first game we had problems to create chances and score goals," he admitted.

Boston Red Sox have made a notable change to their lineup for Saturday's meeting with the Kansas City Royals, with Jarren Duran moving up the batting order as Boston looks to respond to three consecutive defeats.
Duran will remain in centre field for the second straight game, but interim manager Chad Tracy has opted to give the outfielder a different spot in the order for the latest Royals clash at Fenway Park.

Duran will bat seventh against the Royals after hitting eighth in Friday night's series opener, which Boston lost 3-2.
The Red Sox have also kept Duran in centre field, with Ceddanne Rafaela and Eli White both on the injured list. Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu will join him in the outfield for Saturday's contest.

Union Berlin head coach Mauro **** rinelli acknowledged that his side's continued defensive problems extend well beyond one system or one centre-back partnership after Friday evening's 1-3 home defeat against Schalke 04. The result leaves Union with one point from their opening three Bundesliga fixtures and, considerably more concerningly, ten goals conceded.
Lustrinelli's side opened the campaign with a chaotic 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt before suffering a comprehensive 4-0 away defeat at Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. Schalke then became the third consecutive opponent to exploit a defensive unit still attempting to adjust to significant tactical and personnel changes.
"It's a lot of small things," **** rinelli told Sky Germany when asked about the ten goals conceded. "We're too undisciplined. We're not keeping up with the opponent. And the opponent profits. They exploit it. And we need too many chances to score goals. The two things are decisive over the course of 90 minutes."
The warning signs predate the Bundesliga campaign.
GGFN highlighted Union's defensive instability throughout preseason, with **** rinelli experimenting with multiple formations while attempting to move the club away from the three-centre-back structures that had defined the era of Urs Fischer and his successors.

A bright pink sandpit and a pitch black infield. A brand new trophy and historic prize money.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is posed as something different in the sport, but some things stay the same - pole vault star Armand Duplantis taking centre stage.
As the inaugural competition's official song, which two-time Olympic champion Duplantis wrote and recorded, was played to a sell-out crowd of more than 20,000, all eyes fell on the Swedish 26-year-old as, yet again, it was just him against the world record.
Duplantis had already secured the ****** le of inaugural Ultimate champion in the event he has long dominated, and his $150,000 (£110,000) slice of the record $10m (£7.4m) prize pot on offer.
While he was unable to clear 6.32m and set the 16th world record of his remarkable career, an entertaining battle with Greek challenger Emmanouil Karalis had provided the blockbuster finale to the opening night of action in Budapest.

Sept 10 (Reuters) - The Israeli military destroyed Hezbollah underground infrastructure at the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Thursday, adding that the operation completed the consolidation of a security zone in the area.
Israeli forces would remain in the area to prevent the Iran-aligned Hezbollah militant group from re-establishing its presence and rebuilding its capabilities, the two officials said in a joint statement.
The Ali al-Taher ridge, about 15 km (10 miles) from the Israeli border, has become one of the most contested areas of the war between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah is believed to have built an underground command centre and weapons stores there, according to Lebanese security sources who spoke to Reuters in July.
Lebanon's state news agency NNA said the Israeli military carried out a powerful blast at the ridge, with tremors and the sound of the explosion felt across Nabatieh and surrounding areas.
The Israeli military said its forces had established "operational control" over the ridge, both above and below ground, before dismantling the infrastructure. The network extended for more than 2 km (1.24 miles) and contained dozens of rockets, missiles and drones, as well as anti-tank missiles, mines and explosive devices, it said.

Israeli forces would remain in the area to prevent the Iran-aligned Hezbollah militant group from re-establishing its presence and rebuilding its capabilities, the two officials said in a joint statement.

Andreas Christensen produced one of the most important individual performances in Barcelona's 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.
While the attention understandably went elsewhere, the Danish centre-back completed the entire match, which is a major milestone for a player whose recent career has been repeatedly interrupted by injury.
Now, according to SPORT, Hansi Flick is counting on Christensen as an important member of his squad now that the defender appears to have returned to full fitness.
It is a significant change from where the 30-year-old found himself only a few months ago.
To understand the gravity of the defender's appearance, it is important to note that Christensen played more minutes against Feyenoord than he managed across the entirety of Barcelona's Champions League campaign last season.

Manchester United have struggled to keep out goals this season after opting against reinforcing their backline over the summer. The Red Devils have already conceded six goals in their opening three Premier League games.
The English giants are likely to consider defensive reinforcements in 2027 after concentrating almost entirely on the midfield this summer. A new centre-back could be on the agenda, with Harry Maguire no longer young and Matthijs de Ligt sidelined since last December.
A previous report relayed by The Peoples Person has named Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu as a solution to United's defensive woes. The Frenchman is coming off a solid 2025/26 campaign, during which he registered two goals and seven **** ists in 49 appearances.
Kalulu has featured at centre-back as well as right-back for the Bianconeri so far and his versatility makes him a lucrative option for the Red Devils. An update on the situation has now emerged that will delight United fans.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — The fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record in eastern Congo is rapidly spreading beyond its epicenter, Africa's top health body said Thursday.
In recent weeks, new cases and deaths have declined in Ituri province, the outbreak's epicenter, but risen sharply in neighboring North Kivu and Haut-Uele, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said at a weekly briefing.
According to the latest government figures released on Thursday, 6,843 cases have been reported, including 3,310 deaths. Ituri province remains the hardest-hit province, with more than 5,400 cases while North Kivu has reported over 1,000 cases since the outbreak was declared in May.
The outbreak in eastern Congo is spreading under extremely difficult conditions, fueled by insecurity, displacement, a health workers' strike and intense population movements. The situation is particularly concerning at displacement sites, where residents already live in extremely precarious conditions.
The World Health Organization has said the outbreak remains out of control and is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, the deadliest on record, which killed more than 11,000 people, primarily in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Chanel shoppers are known to be a discerning bunch, but artist Tom Sachs has created an unauthorized replica of the luxury house's sought-after Paris boutique in lower Manhattan.
Located in Sachs' studio at 245 Centre Street, the phony Chanel store has a sign with 31 Rue Cambon on its front door, and a black Chanel-esque ensemble in one street-front window and a red one in the other. During a pass-by Monday night, the studio's security grates were down and a sign on the front door read, "NOTICE BY ENTERING YOU ARE TO BE RECORDED."
Media requests to Sachs were unreturned.
Although Sachs' outpost has a sign with what looks like a handwritten version of Chanel's proprietary interlocked "CC" monogram, the designer label has not been involved in the project in any way. A Chanel spokesperson said Thursday, "Chanel is not involved in this project, and we did not participate in its conception or development. This is not part of the cultural [programs] that Chanel supports around the world and has no affiliation with Chanel."
Scheduled to open Friday and to run through Oct. 10, Sachs' store will have highly limited access — with hours set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The artist's body of work includes jabs at consumerism, materialism, logomania and high-low dressing. His Centre Street studio's new faux Chanel outpost is prismatic in a few ways, including the fact that his ****** e is a short walk to Canal Street where counterfeit goods are sold in abundance.
Sachs' faux boutique coincides with the $20 billion Chanel's accelerating growth and shoppers' fervor for fashion artistic director Matthieu Blazy's designs. Chanel hauls have gone viral, thanks to influencers like Elle Ferguson, who posted in March about traveling 30 hours to get the other Chanel bag of the season — the maxi flap bag in shearling. (She already had scored the mini rectangular bag in gold.) TikTokers like Mikayla Nogueira are sharing their much-coveted loot too with followers.
Asked about the potential impact of Sachs' project on Chanel, Luca Solca, global luxury goods ****** yst at Bernstein, said Thursday, "Imitation is the best form of flattery. This seems to confirm how powerful Chanel has grown into our collective perception."
The New York-based Sachs focuses on recreating modern icons with everyday objects like plywood, including Le Corbusier's 1952 Unite d'Habitation with foam core and a glue gun or variations of NASA's ****** ecraft like the Lunar Module. His unyielding tongue-in-cheek career narrative touches on craftsmanship, luxury and nihilism.
In 1998, his notoriety or fame rose with the creation of a Chanel-type guillotine. Along with Chanel, Sachs has also taken aim at Hermès with his art projects including his 2006 Tiffany Value Meal — a riff on McDonalds' "Happy Meal" in Tiffany & Co's signature blue with what appeared to be the company's logo. U.S. stock futures were little changed to moderately higher on Wednesday as investors ***** sed further military developments involving the United States and Iran, movements in oil and bond markets, developments in artificial intelligence and renewed trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
At 02:48 ET (06:48 GMT), S&P 500 futures were up 6 points, or 0.1%, while Nasdaq 100 futures gained 57 points, or 0.2%. Dow futures were broadly unchanged.
Wall Street equities declined on Tuesday following exchanges of attacks between the U.S. and Iran and strikes against Saudi Arabia by Houthi forces in Yemen.
Technology stocks were also affected by market reaction to OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model, with software and services companies declining while some AI infrastructure-related companies, including chipmakers and data centre-linked industrial groups, received investor interest.
U.S. government bonds have also come under selling pressure. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield was trading just below 5%, close to its highest level in almost two decades.

Sunderland will entertain ****** nal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday as they look to secure a good result at home in the Premier League. The Black Cats secured a 1-0 win over Hull City in the EFL Cup recently, so they would be full of confidence going into this game.
Regis Le Bris will set his players up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and is expected to make a handful of tweaks to his first team for this game. Therfore, Brian Brobbey will get a chance to lead the line for the Wearside club up top.
Robin Roefs will operate in goal for the Black Cats after conceding one goal in his last league outing. Kevin Danso will play alongside Dan Ballard at the centre of the Sunderland backline as they look to keep a solid shape at the back throughout the 90 minutes.
Nordi Mukiele will get a chance to impress as the right-back, while Reinildo Mandava looks to prove his worth on the other side as the left-back. Both of them will have to perform their defensive duties well before trying to offer support to their teammates up top.
Omar Alderete will offer cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

HELSINKI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google will invest at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years, it said on Wednesday, calling it the company's single largest investment in Europe.
Finland has become a magnet for data centres as companies including Microsoft and TikTok owner ByteDance seek to reduce energy costs and meet climate goals.
Its cold climate makes coping with the heat produced by data centres cheaper and it also has large amounts of low-carbon electricity.
Alphabet this year increased its global investment to between $195 billion and $205 billion as it seeks to capture growing computing demand.
The investments in Finland will include data centres, electricity grid improvements and clean energy and battery projects driving services such as Gemini, Search, Maps and YouTube, Google said in a statement.

Arsenal are among the clubs keeping a close watch on AIK teenager Kevin Filling, with the 17-year-old increasingly viewed as one of the more intriguing young attacking prospects in Sweden.
According to Caught Offside, **** nal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Juventus have all tracked the forward in recent weeks, with scouts reported to have attended AIK matches in Stockholm. The interest centres on a player described as a potential "project signing", a label that feels particularly relevant in **** nal's case.
Filling has already stepped into senior football and is drawing attention for a profile that clubs value highly. His blend of size, pace and adaptability makes him an attractive option in a market where elite teenage talent can become significantly more expensive in a short **** e of time. Standing at around 1.85m, he can play through the middle or from the left as an inverted winger, while his "physical strength, acceleration and versatility" are understood to be among the key reasons for the growing demand.
There is a clear logic to **** nal's interest. The report states that **** nal "view Filling as a long-term project signing" and that he could be "developed carefully and potentially become part of the first-team picture over the next few seasons". That aligns with a recruitment approach focused on securing premium young talent before it fully explodes in value.

Elon Musk's estranged eldest daughter Vivian Wilson is front and centre in a bold anti-AI campaign for Spanish fashion label Desigual.
The campaign, helmed by directing trio PSG (made up of Yukihiro 'Sho' Shoda, Pau López and Gerardo del Hierro - formerly known as TURBO), sees the transgender model, acitvist and social media personality take a stand against artificial intelligence.
Illustrating the campaign's ****** le, 'Born to Disobey', one clip sees the 22-year-old using a robot as a golf tee, walking it like a dog on a leash, and trying to teach it to say "Desigual". Throughout, the robot malfunctions, leading Vivian to the conclusion: "Some things aren't meant to be fixed."
Per a press release, the campaign aims to "send a clear message: the greatest rebellion is no longer about fighting against the system but about refusing to be part of it. When everything invites you to obey, the answer is attitude, irony and the freedom to be yourself."
Wilson told People that it was important to her to take a stance on the impact of AI on the fashion industry "because it takes jobs away from talented creatives while being detrimental for the environment."

Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi feels José Mourinho wouldn't have subbed Rasmus Hojlund off, as Massimiliano Allegri did against Inter last weekend, but Federico Dimarco's absence will be 'significant' at the Bernabéu tonight.
Inter and Mourinho reunite at the Bernabéu tonight in the opening round of the 2026-27 Champions League, at the same venue where the Special One lifted the Champions League as the Nerazzurri coach in 2010.
Materazzi built a strong bond with Mourinho during the Portuguese's two-year spell at San Siro and recently met the Special One in Italy: "José took a plane specifically to record that footage, and he told me again: 'You and John Terry, the most important centre-backs of my career'," Materazzi told Gazzetta.
The former Italy defender, a 2006 Italy World Cup winner, is certainly not surprised that Real Madrid hired Mou last summer.
"No, because I know the relationship he has with Florentino, how much he trusts José," he said.

Liverpool's Champions League campaign begins at Anfield on Wednesday, with Atletico Madrid providing an immediate test for Andoni Iraola and a squad still adjusting to life under their new head coach.
Iraola arrives at his first European fixture with some momentum. Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town on Friday ended a run of two successive 2-2 draws, with Alexander Isak scoring twice and Cody Gakpo supplying both ****** ists. It was the sort of result that gives a new manager some breathing room, although Atletico Madrid will represent a very different proposition.
Alexis Mac Allister was the first Liverpool player to face the media at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday, and inevitably, his future was one of the main talking points.
The Argentina international confirmed there had been a genuine possibility of leaving Liverpool during the summer, following uncertainty over a new contract.
"There was a chance, of course," Mac Allister said. "I received the news that the club wasn't in a position to offer me a new contract, which made me sad."

The Swedish centre-back was the unlikely goalscoring hero as Celta fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Getafe in La Liga.
Martin Satriano had given Getafe the lead after 21 minutes, leaving Celta trailing at the interval.
But Starfelt dragged his side level in the 57th minute with an impressive finish from a corner, launching himself towards the ball and powering a diving header beyond goalkeeper David Soria.
Getafe were later reduced to ten men when Zaid Romero was shown a red card with around 20 minutes remaining, but Celta were unable to find a winner.
The result leaves the Spanish side still searching for their first league victory of the season, having recorded three draws and two defeats.
