Winter storm snarls airport traffic for second day

The massive winter storm that has impacted much of the U.S. is wreaking havoc on the airline industry for the second consecutive day.
As of 10 a.m. ET, more than 4,500 flights had been canceled on Monday, with another 12,000 delayed, according to FlightAware. That follows a record-setting number of cancellations on Sunday, which saw 12,595 flights canceled and 22,092 delayed.
That was the highest number since the pandemic — and a big jump from Saturday's 4,104 cancellations.

Forecasters warn of 'dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts' for days

A massive winter storm dumped sleet, freezing rain and snow across much of the U.S. on Sunday, bringing subzero temperatures and halting air and road traffic. Tree branches and power lines snapped under the weight of ice, and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the Southeast were left without electricity.

An Augusta County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot the evening of Dec. 17 while trying to make an arrest, and the suspect is dead, Virginia State Police said.

U.S. military conducts strike on another alleged drug boat, killing 4 people

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Southern Command announced that it had conducted another strike against a small boat in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Thursday, following a pause of almost three weeks.
It is the 22nd strike the U.S. military has carried out against boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean that the Trump administration claimed were trafficking drugs.
There were four casualties in Thursday’s strike, according to the social media post, bringing the death toll of the campaign to at least 87 people.
