SAN MARCOS - As UTSA quarterback Owen McCown was preparing for his final season, he felt a lingering weight on his shoulders.
He carried the burden of two straight losses to rival Texas State, of slow starts and road woes and missed opportunities in close losses. No matter what drills or exercises the Roadrunners devised, he knew he couldn't replicate those moments. He dove into the mental aspect as much as he could, searching for answers that might pay off when the situation finally arrived.
With UTSA trailing in the final two minutes against Texas State in a pivotal early season showdown Saturday in San Marcos, McCown delivered. The Roadrunners orchestrated a drive that ended in a 25-yard touchdown run by Brandon High with 14 seconds remaining, providing the final blow in a 30-26 win over the Bobcats.
"Obviously that's something we've been working on, and it showed today," McCown said. "To go out my last year against a rival here, a road win on a two-minute drill, it's big time. It says a lot about our team."

SAN MARCOS - Texas State football coach GJ Kinne said Saturday's 31-26 loss to UTSA was one of the weirdest games he's ever experienced.
The Bobcats (0-2) outgained the Roadrunners (2-0) offense by 83 yards. The Texas State running backs averaged 7.15 yards per carry on 35 attempts. UTSA was 3-of-15 on third down; Texas State was 9-of-17. UTSA quarterback Owen McCown faced pressure from Texas State's defensive line all afternoon.

And yet, the Bobcats were the team desperately tossing laterals across the field when the clock hit zero, hoping for a miracle play. UTSA stormed the field afterward, whooping and hollering in celebration. For the first time in the rivalry, Texas State was the program defending its status. UTSA clearly had a chip on its shoulder that its San Marcos neighbours used to have. After the game, Kinne treated the loss like any other.
"We can't let this one define us," Kinne said. "It's not the end-all, be-all."

From the moment the 2025 season ended, UTSA set out to find answers for the team's biggest shortcomings. At the top of the list? Winning on the road, and avoiding slow starts.
The Roadrunners are 3-10 away from the Alamodome the past two years, opening the 2024 season 2-4 and starting 3-4 in 2025.
Now, after months of preparing and retooling, UTSA will finally find out if the problems have been solved, visiting Texas State for an I-35 rivalry showdown at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos.
"We've been talking about it for a long time," Roadrunners defensive lineman Tai Leonard said. "We've been doing all the work that's required. So, I mean, God willing, we can go out there and showcase."
UTSA coach Jeff Traylor knows the results his offseason of changes to staff, roster construction and even day-to-day practice schedules will take more than one day to bear out.

The Bobcats' rise has coincided with increased success against the Roadrunners. Head coach GJ Kinne has led Texas State to two straight wins over UTSA and his former mentor, Jeff Traylor, after a 20-13 loss in Kinne's debut year. The Bobcats handed the Roadrunners a 49-10 drubbing last time they met in San Marcos, and Traylor made it clear in the days leading up to the game that he hasn't forgotten that embarrassment.

Texas State football head coach GJ Kinne didn't hold back much after Saturday's 59-7 loss to Texas.
Sure, the Longhorns' talent was glaring. They tore through the Bobcats' defense, while their punter never left the sideline. Texas State's offense showed some signs of life against a front seven that features a couple of future NFL players. But Kinne said the mental mishaps frustrated him more than anything else.
"I can deal with physically getting beat," Kinne said. "But when you're playing someone like Texas Week 1 on the road, every time you make a (mental) mistake like that, they're going to make you pay for it."

A Texas judge has temporarily cleared the way for more than 40 former professional athletes to return to college competition, blocking an SEC eligibility rule that had prevented them from playing this season.
Dallas County Judge Martin Hoffman issued a temporary restraining order Thursday in a lawsuit brought by 41 athletes. The order prevents the NCAA, SEC and Commissioner Greg Sankey from declaring the plaintiffs ineligible based on transfer portal rules or time spent on a professional roster.
"As long as they would have been eligible to continue playing college sports in the following semester if they had a fifth year of eligibility, they are eligible today," Hoffman wrote, according to the ******* ociated Press.

A self-described homebody, UTSA running back Will Henderson sometimes makes TikTok videos to fight off boredom. His account has just shy of 1,500 followers, and though the occasional video pops for thousands of views and hundreds of likes, Henderson said he'd be content with much less.
"Just think about, if you get 20 people that like your stuff, that's a lot of likes," Henderson said. "That's 20 people that liked your thing. So, I like seeing that, too."
A little love on social media pales in comparison to the attention Henderson has garnered this offseason. As UTSA's highest-rated and fastest player in the College Football 27 video game, Henderson said he's received plenty of messages thanking him for his contribution to players' dynasties.
His expectations for his real-life performance might be even higher, as Henderson deadpanned that he'd like to rush for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2026. His surge late last season has sparked plenty of buzz, putting him in the conversation for various watch lists and preseason all-conference teams.
But while Henderson has become a leader and focal point of UTSA's offense entering his redshirt sophomore season, he doesn't plan on allowing the spotlight to shift who he's always been.

We are officially two weeks from Texas football and another major piece of news has popped up. Ty'Anthony Smith, the third-year linebacker, has been dismissed from the team following a tumultuous fall camp.
As has been discussed throughout the offseason, the LB room is not the deepest on the team. The trio of freshmen, led by Tyler Atkinson, will need to play a bigger role this season. I believe they are up to the task but it's unlikely to come as quickly as Texas would like.
One of the single biggest storylines this offseason has been the freshmen LBs. Tyler Atkinson came in as the top dawg, but Rocky ******* s and Kosi Okpala were the story during spring camp. Since then, Atkinson has taken a step forward and seems poised to back up Rasheem Biles. ******* s will get looks behind Justin Cryer at MLB and Okpala is likely to occupy a role similar to Brad Spence.
That trio of players are talented enough to make this a relative non-problem. However, LB is not always a position that comes quickly to young players. It's a position largely defined off your experience and knowledge of the game. That's something this trio will have to find early in the season or the Texas LB unit will have to lean on the trio of Biles, Cryer and Spence more than they'd like.
So, how quickly can this group be ready? I'd argue Tyler Atkinson will be a consistent and confident contributor by the Oklahoma game. Before that, he will get reps but might not be ready to fill the role he'll eventually have to. The entire trio needs to find the field consistently against Texas State and UTSA, to speed up the process as much as possible. I would expect the veterans to carry the majority of the weight against Ohio State, simply because of the complexity and intensity that game will contain.

The Brazilian Men's National Team has been called up for the CONMEBOL South American U-20 Futsal Championship, which will take place from September 26 to October 4 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. This Tuesday (18), head coach Cafu announced the list of 14 players who will represent Brazil in the competition.
The most successful team in the tournament's history, Brazil has won eight CONMEBOL South American U-20 Futsal ******* les and heads to Venezuela in search of another continental trophy.
Before its debut, the Brazilian National Team will begin preparations in São José do Vale do Rio Preto (RJ), where the squad will hold its training camp.
In the first stage, Brazil is in Group B alongside Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, and Chile. Group A consists of Venezuela, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia.
The ten national teams were divided into two groups of five and will play a single round-robin in the preliminary stage. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals. The remaining teams will continue in the competition to determine places from fifth to ninth.

Preseason game one was a big night for Washington Commanders rookie Robert Henry Jr.
Henry, an undrafted free agent running back out of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), was called upon to run the ball 12 times in his first NFL football experience on Friday. Henry made the most out of his opportunity, rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown.
"I feel great. Still much more to improve, but overall I feel great," expressed Henry during the postgame press conference. "When I was watching film on the tablet during the game, there's some runs I could have made bigger runs. There are some blocks I could have made better. But you know, I'm still progressing." Henry's first carry resulted in an 11-yard gain. It's no surprise that following the game, when a reporter asked how long it took him to get comfortable out there, Henry responded he was confident/comfortable after the first run.
On the Commanders' next offensive possession, Henry had a 15-yard run. Two plays later, Henry went around right end for 22 yards and his first NFL touchdown experience. The Commanders and Dolphins scrimmaged Wednesday, but Henry said he could recognize the difference Friday night at Northwest Stadium. "It felt great. The environment was different on the bigger stage. I just soaked it all in and gave it my all."
Henry said his Commanders teammates encouraged him during the game, telling him to keep running hard and that he was going to bust one. "I took their words, kept running, and the holes were definitely opening up."

Texas A&M's 2026 tight end room will be led by senior Micah Riley, who is one of five team captains entering the new campaign, while redshirt freshman Kiotti Armstrong and transfer portal additions Houston Thomas and Richie Anderson fill out the rest of the revamped room after Nate Boerkircher, who was selected in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, led all A&M tight ends in receiving and touchdowns last season.
Losing Boerkircher's skill set as an inline blocker and reliable receiver places pressure on Micah Riley to step up as the full-time starter in most 11-personnel looks next season, but under new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, the expectation is that Houston Thomas and Richie Anderson will be heavily utilized in pass sets, while Armstrong, depending on his development over the next three weeks, remains the outlier.
Houston Thomas is a College Station native, and while A&M did not offer him out of high school, he has a close relationship with third-year coach Mike Elko going back to his high school playing days, and, during his final season at UTSA, Thomas reeled in 34 receptions for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns, and enters his final collegiate season with the 5th most receiving yards from a tight end in career (916).
During the first two practices, Thomas has reportedly looked the part as a receiver, thriving in the seam given his size advantage and sure hands, which was captured by Texas A&M's media team this week. Similar to Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton, Thomas's large catch radius and experience as one of UTSA's No. 1 receiving targets should make him one of starting quarterback Marcel Reed's top targets this fall.

Hey Commanders fans, what do you know about Robert Henry Jr?
With the Washington Commanders rookies having already reported for the 2026 training camp, let's learn about Henry. Initially, it is perfectly understandable if no one in the Commanders fan base knew of Henry in his first two years of college. You see, he played for Jones College in Ellisville, Mississippi, a junior college in 2021 and 2022. Henry then transferred, finding a new football home at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
Playing at UTSA from 2023-2025, Henry blossomed in his senior season, accumulating 1,045 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 151 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt. One of the things that Commanders scouts no doubt noticed about Henry was his development in his ability to break off an explosive run for big yardage. Henry produced five rushes of 70-plus yards in 2025. This was not only the best, but was three more than any other FBS player. Henry was named a first-team All-American Athletic Conference and was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist.
Standing 5-foot-9, weighing 196 pounds, Henry is not exactly Derrick Henry in stature. This is another reason Henry went undrafted in April's 2026 NFL Draft. When the seventh and final draft rounds had concluded, there was Henry still available, and the Commanders ****** ed him, signing him to an undrafted free agent deal.
The Commanders' running back room has Jacory Croskey-Merritt "Bill" and Jeremy McNichols returning from the 2025 team. Chris Rodriguez departed, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent. Offseason additions have included signing free agents Rachaad White and Jerome Ford. The draft brought Kaytron Allen from Penn State in the sixth round.

Under Deion Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes have rebuilt their roster each offseason through the transfer portal. It's the new way to build a roster in college football, placing greater emphasis on current production than on internal development.
That new philosophy has completely changed the average age of college football rosters, with most now slightly older since the transfer portal's implementation. Considering Colorado added 40-plus transfers this offseason, are the Buffs an old or young team?
Unsurprisingly, Colorado is on the older side with an average age of 20.63, according to data from RotoWire. The Buffs are tied for the 16th oldest roster in the FBS. CU is also the fifth-oldest team in the Power Four and the third-oldest in the Big 12. The two older Big 12 teams are Oklahoma State and UCF.
Considering Colorado frequently uses the transfer portal, an average age close to 21 (normally a college senior) is not surprising.
Georgia is the youngest team in the country (19.81 average age), which is not surprising given their propensity to land highly ranked freshman recruiting classes. The oldest team is UTSA (21.02 average age), as a team that prioritizes development and has many players who have been with the program for 3-4 years.

We are down to 66 days until Texas football is back and it's another Wildcard Wednesday. I wanted to focus on the two "lay-up games" on the Longhorns schedule, Texas State and UTSA. The Longhorns are favored to win both games by a wide margin, but I do believe both represent interesting challenges that could be important for Texas this season.
Let's start with the team that'll kick off the "All-In" season, the Texas State Bobcats. Texas State is a team that could very well factor into the CFP conversation among the Group of 5 teams. Beau Jackson at QB is an elite athlete, coming off a 3,200+ passing yard, 700+ rushing yard season.
Beau Sparks is his running mate at WR, coming off a 1,200-yard season but Chris Dawn Jr. is also back off a 1,000-yard campaign. Lincoln Pare left the RB room but Greg Burrell, who rushed for 671 yards last season, is back as the starter.
Point being, this offense is going to be potent. Obviously Texas should have more than enough answers for them but it'll be a nice test prior to Ohio State. The DL, particularly the edge defenders will need to contain Brad Jackson. The secondary will need to step up in man coverage against a strong WR duo. On top of that, the Texas offense will be facing an experienced defense that, at the very least, will test the Longhorns execution.
Moving forward to the Roadrunners, they are the easier of the two opponents on paper. That being said, there are aspects of this team that will create questions for the Texas defense. Owen McCown is back for another season as the starter, alongside his star WRs, David Amador II and AJ Wilson. Robert Henry Jr. is out of the RB group but Will Henderson III notched 866 rushing yards last season. The offense is going to be potent, and more importantly, experienced.

Brazil’s U-17 Futsal National Team won the Nations League **** le, played in Córdoba, Spain. The tournament, held between June 25 and 28, was part of the team’s preparation for the CONMEBOL U-17 South American Championship, scheduled for August in Paraguay.
In their opener, the Seleção beat Spain 4-2, with goals from Pablo, Isaac, Cauã Farias, and Victor Kauê. In the second round, Brazil thrashed Indonesia 9-0, with Pietro scoring three times, while Arthur Furtado, Victor Kauê, João Fronza, Isaac, Jhon, and Kauã Paiva also found the net. In the semifinal, the team defeated France 3-2, with two goals from Kauã Paiva and one from Luka, securing a place in the final.
In the grand final, once again against Spain, the team coached by Diogo Barros capped off an excellent campaign with a 5-2 victory. Cauã Farias (2), Murilo Jr. (2), and Cauã Gamba scored the **** le-winning goals.
Coach Diogo Barros highlighted the team-building process and the importance of preparation throughout the cycle.
“This is a generation that has been built through medium-term work and is now beginning to reap the rewards. We are very happy with the **** le and with another important preparation cycle for the South American Championship. We faced high-level national teams, which showed the quality of the work being done. Now the focus is on preparation and on going after the South American **** le, which is our main objective.”

NFL world reacts to Bears releasing CB Zah Frazier

The Chicago Bears have moved on from one of their 2025 draft picks before he ever stepped onto the field. Cornerback Zah Frazier was released on Thursday, ending his brief time with the team.
Frazier was selected by the Bears in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of UTSA and was expected to compete for a roster spot last summer. Unfortunately, Frazier didn't practice at all during training camp due to a personal matter and wound up missing the entire season because of it.
Still, the Bears had planned on him being in the mix for the 2026 season, though he had plenty of competition from players such as Terell Smith and rookie Malik Muhammad. Instead, Frazier becomes the first member of the 2025 class to move on from the organization and will attempt to restart his NFL career with another team.
