Programs that previously had almost no chance of making the playoffs now have a realistic path. That became clear over the past two seasons, as Indiana, SMU, Boise State, Tulane and James Madison all reached the CFP for the first time. Federal agents seized the mobile phone and computer of Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter last September in a wide-ranging probe into the financial dealings of the billionaire's businesses, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Federal Bureau of Investigation carried out a search warrant aboard a private plane at a Chicago airport where Walter was traveling, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The FBI's Chicago field office confirmed that it executed a court-authorized search for a mobile phone and laptop on an aircraft at Midway International Airport on Sept. 18 but declined to comment further.

The Giants have been pushed around for too long on both sides of the ball. They've emphasized building a team that refuses to get shoved without consequence between the lines, in back page headlines and on banners pulled by planes over MetLife Stadium.
That was going to take making over a locker room last year that needed to not only help establish a shift in expectations and results, but also do what is needed to change perspective and performance.
Enter John Harbaugh, who wants to build the Giants into a bully in NFC East, and for that to happen, the tone will be set in camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia when they hit the practice fields beginning Wednesday.
Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo represented that change in attitude last season in a Thursday night upset of the Eagles, breaking free of the old ***** oned-down Giants way that had gotten stale with all the losing around here for more than a decade.

Next weekend, the Pro Football Hall of Fame welcomes the Class of 2026. This year, five NFL legends will be recognized for their accomplishments on the field as their stories become immortalized forever in Canton, Ohio. Off the field, another distinguished honoree will also be recognized. During the Enshrinees' Gold Jacket Dinner, Sandy Grossman will become the first television director to receive the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Grossman's recognition marks a historic first for the Hall. Over a broadcasting career that spanned more than five decades, he directed coverage of a record 10 Super Bowls, 18 NBA Finals, five Stanley Cup Finals and multiple Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies.
Grossman retired in 2012 and passed away in 2014 in Boca Raton, Florida, at the age of 78. Earlier this year, his son, Dean Grossman, received the call informing him that his father would finally receive one of football's highest honors.
"I got a text from Rich [Desrosiers] at the Hall asking if I was available to speak in about an hour. So, he called me along with Joe [Hawkins] and Jim [Porter]. I told them I had never been to the Hall of Fame before, and they told me I'm going to get on a plane this year because my father will be winning the Pete Rozelle Award," said Grossman. "It was very emotional. I hung up and started to cry."
Earning a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame is one of the most difficult accomplishments in football, whether as a player or broadcaster. The selection process for the Pete Rozelle Award is equally demanding. Candidates require an extensive case for consideration, and only one recipient earns the reward each year.

Sha'Carri Richardson is once again a national champion.
Richardson won the women's 100 at the 2026 USA Track and Field Championships on Friday, July 24.
Richardson crossed the finish line with a time of 10.77 to win. Her time equaled a season best. Kayla White ran a 10.90 to place second and Tamari Davis posted an 11.00 to take third.
Running out of lane five, Richardson got a decent start. She pulled even with the field around 40 meters, surged passed the other sprinters and crossed the finish line with a comfortable victory.
"It feels phenomenal to be back in a better place. Healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally," Richardson told NBC Sports after the race. "It shows that hard work pays off."

A seaplane carrying 11 passengers crashed Thursday off the coast of Washington state, leading to a frantic rescue mission led by nearby boaters and it was all caught on camera. All passengers survived the crash, but the sheriff's office says multiple people were hospitalized with everything from head injuries to broken bones. NBC's Liz Kreutz reports for TODAY.

July 23 (Reuters) - Iran flew Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders, military advisers and missile- and drone-related equipment into Yemen this month, according to four sources, in a move that suggests Tehran is seeking to strengthen the ability of its Houthi allies to threaten Red Sea shipping.
Four sources familiar with the matter, including two Iranian sources, Yemen's information minister and a regional security ****** yst, said Iran transferred the IRGC personnel and military-related equipment on a flight from Tehran to Yemen on July 13, a development that has not been previously reported.
The two Iranian sources told Reuters that between 10 and 21 IRGC personnel, including senior commanders, were on the Mahan Air flight.
The plane was originally bound for the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa, but diverted to the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah after the airport came under attack by the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

And at a thumping Tollcross on Friday, they stood together on the blocks waiting for the first big swimming final of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to start.
Scott in lane two. Dean in lane three. Back to back. Little more than a metre between them. But by the end of the 200m individual medley that distance had grown. And grown significantly.
Scotland's poster boy Scott might have only finished little under a second in front of his big pal from England - who had to settle for bronze - but that is a lifetime in the world of elite swimming.
The 29-year-old's time of 1:56.38 was rapid for four lengths of furious thrashing, each one a different stroke.

Like most college sports administrators, TCU athletic director Mike Buddie thinks there should be an enforceable salary cap for players in college sports.
But he doesn't think they should be the only ones.
"I think athletic directors should make a capped salary. I think coaches should make a capped salary," Buddie said during an interview with Front Office Sports. "And I think student-athletes should be in the room helping make these decisions."
In college football, coaching salaries—as well as coaching buyouts—have ballooned.
Currently, the highest-paid coaches are Indiana's Curt Cignetti, Georgia's Kirby Smart, and LSU's Lane Kiffin, whose annual salaries all exceed $13 million per year. Athletic directors don't make nearly as much, but—particularly in the power conferences—they can take home more than $1 million per year.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Blaney faces a high-stakes weekend in Indianapolis.
He's hoping to put Roger Penske back in victory lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and he'd like to add a second crown jewel win to his resume. At the same time, he's chasing a $1 million pay day — if he finishes ahead of surprise finalist Todd Gilliland in NASCAR's second In-Season Challenge.
Blaney's solution is to simplify matters by sweeping both ******* les Sunday with one amazing Brickyard 400.
"We obviously understand what we're going for with the In-Season Challenge," Blaney said before Friday's short practice. "But at the same time, you're trying to win the race. That's the big one here — and trying to win for Roger at this place is incredibly important in our race shop and to everyone on this team. So I've looked at it as like, just go try to run the best race you can and focus on that."
Blaney heads into race weekend as the favorite in the final round of the challenge. The 2023 Cup champion has strung together 11 consecutive finishes of 11th or better, a feat he's achieved in 17 of 21 races this season. Two weeks ago in Atlanta he captured his second win of the year.

Adam Ramsay-Peaty shrugged off a bizarre delay to power through to the semi-finals of the men’s 100 metres ***** troke event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Ramsay-Peaty’s heat was temporarily halted as he was on the blocks when a lane divider broke off, requiring an official to strip to the waist and enter the pool to reconnect it.
Ramsay-Peaty duly wasted no time in recording the fastest time of the morning, 59.46 seconds, with only two rivals, Australia’s Sam Williamson and Filip Nowacki of Jersey, also finishing in under a minute.

Two years ago, Jamal Britt lay in his apartment in the hot summer — with no power as he struggled to pay bills — and wondered if it was time to quit track.

Rookies for the Kansas City Chiefs will be reporting to the team’s training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph later today. When we are able to see the full squad next week, rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane will be among the players under the most scrutiny. Because of the price the Chiefs gave up moving up three slots to sixth overall for Delane, there will be little patience for talk of a rookie curve.

The 2026 Formula 1 season has been incredibly brutal for Aston Martin. After tumbling down the competitive order and fighting a severely overweight and aerodynamically flawed chassis, the Silverstone-based squad is finally hitting the reset ****** on.
As the paddock sets up for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the FIA has released the official car presentation documents, and Aston Martin’s submission is nothing short of staggering. The team has declared a massive 16-component upgrade package. This isn’t a simple front wing tweak—this is effectively the debut of the highly anticipated B-spec AMR26.
The official FIA document reveals that nearly every aerodynamic surface on the car has been heavily revised. Unsurprisingly, almost all of the 16 changes are primarily focused on increasing “local load” to conquer the twisty, downforce-heavy layout of the Hungaroring.
The aggressive changes start right at the front of the car. Aston Martin has introduced a completely new, “longer, thinner nose” ****** embly that marries to a highly revised front wing featuring redistributed chord profiles and updated endplate diveplanes. For the past three seasons, no Southeastern Conference team has played in the College Football Playoff championship game. It is a sore subject in a league that had previously won four consecutive national ***** les from 2019 through 2022. This season, the SEC could again have a team playing for the championship, as several top teams have returning quarterbacks.
The SEC had eight quarterbacks in the top 19 of The Athletic’s recent rankings, including six who started for their teams last season in No. 1 Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), No. 7 Arch Manning (Texas), No. 11 Gunner Stockton (Georgia), No. 13 Marcel Reed (Texas A&M), No. 16 John Mateer (Oklahoma) and No. 18 LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina). The other two highly-ranked SEC quarterbacks are transfers in No. 8 Sam Leavitt (LSU) and No. 19 Byrum Brown (Auburn).
Chambliss is coming off the best season of any SEC quarterback, as he led the Rebels to the CFP semifinals. Although Chambliss wasn’t supposed to start and came from Division II Ferris State, he took over the starting job in September and threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns and ran for 527 yards and eight touchdowns. In three CFP games, he completed 67.9% of his passes for 921 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
In February, a Mississippi judge ruled in Chambliss’s favor, granting him a preliminary injunction in a case against the NCAA and giving him another year of eligibility. After finishing eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, he should contend for the award this year. He will be among the most hyped players this season, especially when Ole Miss on Sept. 19 hosts LSU, whose coach, Lane Kiffin, coached at Ole Miss for six seasons before leaving last November before the CFP began.

The Gran Fondo Isle of Man returns this weekend with a new off-road format, marking the biggest change in the event's 10-year history.
Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, the cycling festival has moved away from its traditional road route in favour of a multi-surface challenge featuring gravel tracks, green lanes, forest trails and historical railway lines.
Organisers said the redesigned course had been created to reflect the Island's landscape and the growing popularity of gravel cycling, while remaining true to the event's focus on endurance and participation.
The flagship Gran Fondo Gravel and Gran Fondo XC MTB races take place on Sunday, with riders setting off from Ramsey at 09:30 BST before finishing about 60 miles (100km) later in Port Erin.
The point-to-point route takes competitors to the island's northern tip before heading south through farmland, wetlands, moorland, forests and coastal scenery.

Because not even the off-day can come without some ****** mer Mariners news, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports that the Mariners are parting ways with ****** istant hitting coach Bobby Magallenes.
Magallanes joined the staff prior to the 2025 season along with hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, both of whom had been unceremoniously fired by Atlanta after the 2024 season when the Braves finished the season 89-73. That mark was good for second place in the AL East, but broke the Braves' streak of six consecutive division ****** les, even though Atlanta still qualified for the playoffs, where they were swept by the Padres in the Wild Card series. It was a surprising move at the time, and looked on with consternation by many Atlanta fans as Seitzer and Magallanes went on to help the 2025 Mariners get deeper into the playoffs than any other Mariners team in history, making it all the way to the ALCS.
But baseball is often a sport of what-have-you-done-for-me-lately, and the Mariners, floundering after a 3-3 homestand against two of the worst teams in the NL, opted to make a move to try to spark some offense. While bold staffing changes is a common mid-season move among teams that are dramatically failing to live up to expectations, it's curious that Seitzer and Magallanes – long regarded as a package deal and sharing a similar hitting philosophy – weren't both let go. The ineptitude of the Mariners offense, last or near the bottom of the list in most offensive categories, is obvious, but like the 2024 Braves, Seattle's lineup has been wracked by injuries that have affected, at least temporarily, basically every member of the Opening Day roster except second baseman Cole Young [knocks on wood, pours salt circle, extends giant protective umbrella over Cole]. Furthermore, the bilingual Magallanes was a popular figure in the clubhouse, known for his "heck yeah, shoot yeah!" exclamation after wins or offensive outbursts; the deeply religious Magallanes was also a faith leader on the staff, something that resonated with hitters and pitchers alike.
While Seitzer preached an overall hitting mindset and approach, Magallanes's role on staff was to be responsible for more of the nuts-and-bolts mechanical adjustments, something Director of Hitting Edgar Martinez (who remains on staff) also focuses on, so the team might be looking for a new voice to fill that particular role and hopefully create some better on-field results.
To do that, they've promoted Ed Paparella, the Mariners' minor-league hitting coordinator, to a major-league role. The Mariners actually signed Paparella back in 2021 as a free agent out of South Alabama, and while he never played professionally, he quickly ascended the ranks of the minor leagues. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian had a message for his buddy Lane. While visiting the University of Texas campus, Knox Kiffin, Lane's son, had shared something with Sark about his father. My dad, Knox started, doesn't always hear or listen to me because he's on social media too much.

WORCESTER — While Chad Tracy sat inside his office at Polar Park around 5 p.m. on April 25, the former WooSox manager made a rare call to his wife, Emily, during the middle of a Triple-A game.
Drenched in sweat and coated in mulch from her fingertips to toes, Emily, who was in the middle of landscaping the front yard of their home in Fairfield, Ohio, answered the phone.
"I said, 'Darn, what did you get kicked out of the game for?'" Emily recalled. "He said, 'Em, are you sitting down?' You start to go into panic mode that something bad happened. But he told me a plane was coming to pick him up that night to go manage (the Boston Red Sox) in Baltimore the next day.
"I was speechless."
Nearly four hours after telling his wife he'd been named interim manager of the Boston Red Sox, Tracy rolled a black suitcase through the lower bowel of Polar Park and left to board a plane headed for Baltimore.

LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin was the main character of the offseason's coaching carousel. With Kiffin's Ole Miss team set for a College Football Playoff run, Kiffin accepted the LSU job, making an unprecedented move. Ole Miss promoted Pete Golding and Kiffin didn't coach Ole Miss in the playoff.
Kiffin's exit was messy. Rumors about Kiffin's future swirled for weeks as Ole Miss was in the midst of an historic season. Florida and LSU were both after Kiffin as Ole Miss offered its own contract extension. The longer Kiffin went without signing the Ole Miss offer, the more evident it became that he was leaving.
Kiffin's depature for one of Ole Miss's top rivals, LSU, created a complicated situation. Most of Kiffin's offensive staff was following him to LSU, but those same ***** istants stayed on to coach Ole Miss in the playoff. Kiffin wanted to coach the playoff and plead his case to Ole Miss AD Keith Carter, which only made the situation messier as it dragged on.
Speaking to ESPN on Thursday, Kiffin said he has some regrets about the way the saga played out.
"I wish I would have gone in when I met with Keith and said, 'I've made the decision to go,' I wish I would have just said, 'Hey, I'd like to coach the team,' and he'd say, 'No.' And I'd say, 'Hey, OK, I appreciate it.' [I wish I'd] move on [and] never even discussed it again," Kiffin said to ESPN.

One image did the rounds after the 2026 World Cup Final: eleven men turning their backs on the winners, rather than facing them as tradition and basic grace require.
On July 19, in a stadium in New Jersey, the defending world champions stood in a row and stared at the grass while Spain lifted the trophy a few feet away. Not one of them watched. Behind them, Leandro Paredes had already grabbed a Spanish player by the throat and, per Alan Shearer, "threw two or three haymakers" into someone's face. Enzo Fernández had been sent off before extra time even started. Nahuel Molina reportedly took a swing at Rodri. FIFA has since appointed a prosecutor.
