Incredible footage of a tornado scraping along a mountaintop near Fruit Heights, Utah, on Friday surfaced online, with reports of the twister occurring at an elevation of about 7,500 feet (almost 2,300 metres).
When you're living near a mountainside, one of the last things you would expect to see moving fast at higher elevations would be a tornado, but that's what happened in Utah on Friday.
According to the Salt Lake City, Utah, branch of the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), a rare, strong twister occurred near Fruit Heights, Utah. The funnel first made contact with the ground near a summit along the ridgeline extending west from Francis Peak, at an elevation of about 7,500 feet (almost 2,300 metres).
Tornadoes are uncommon at very high elevation due to drier air and less favourable thunderstorm dynamics.

In Trent Dilfer's coaching return to Lipscomb Academy and TSSAA football, the Mustangs were inches short of a season opening upset.
McCallie's defense stopped Lipscomb Academy at the goal line on 4th and goal to preserve a 27-24 overtime victory on Aug. 21 in Chattanooga.

It's been almost three weeks since Booker High announced it had removed head football coach and athletic director Carlos Woods, and a lot had happened in the wake of that move.
The Tornadoes have seen a massive roster shakeup, have hired a new coach and have seen games slip from their schedule.
Here's it was we know about the Booker High football program and the status of Woods as of Aug. 4.
Woods was removed as Booker's athletic director and head football coach on July 16 with no reason given by the Sarasota School District and the district has yet to explain other to say Woods is under a district investigation. Woods led the Tornadoes to a 12-2 record and a state semifinal appearance in his only season as head coach.
The Sarasota Police Department confirmed Woods was under a criminal investigation "for allegations we received from an outside agency," in a email sent on July 29.

The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are in a rain delay at Great American Ball Park.
The Aug. 1 game got underway on-schedule at 6:40 p.m. but entered a weather delay at 8:20 p.m. Prior to that, the Reds and Pirates played a water-logged affair that saw the teams persist through lightning, a tornado warning and audible tornado warnings howling in nearby Northern Kentucky.
The Pirates led 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when the game was stopped by the umpiring crew.
An estimated time for when play will resume wasn't announced. Fans inside Great American Ball Park were advised of approaching inclement weather.

There is really nothing like the trade deadline in MLB. Yes, other leagues have an in-season deadline, and it can be a season defining moment for those leagues as well, but in Major League Baseball the ripple effect of a deadline deal could last for a decade or more. Teams at the deadline are basically debating between their ability to win a championship in the next two years vs. five years down the road.
Those are the stakes for every trade involving an All-Star level talent. But this year has at least the possibility of a trade that would hit the league like a tornado. The Detroit Tigers are currently 50-57, six games back in the A.L. Central and four games out of the Wild Card. Far from insurmountable, but with the amount of teams in their way it would be a heavy lift. It's been a letdown season for the Tigers who had World Series aspirations. Now they are faced with an organization defining decision. Should they trade arguably the best pitcher in baseball?
Tarik Skubal is a two-time Cy Young winner who is still four months away from turning 30-years old. He could, if healthy, be in his prime for at least another five seasons. That's five seasons of an ace who can lead a team through the postseason. That kind of pitcher isn't often available, and any trade would require an absolute haul of prospects and young talent in return. It would take an all-in move by a team ready to win now and not worried about depleting their Minor League organization.
On the other side of the coin, the Tigers aren't a team that looks to be in desperate need of a rebuild just yet. There is plenty of talent on that team in a division that feels gettable in the near future. But with the uncertainty looming next season, maybe the time is right to cash in?

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — First responders searched damaged homes and buildings on Tuesday for possible victims of a powerful tornado that carved a path of destruction through several northeastern Wisconsin communities.
The twister touched down in the Fox Cities region, which includes Appleton, Menasha and Neenah, at around 1 p.m. Monday and remained on the ground for more than 20 minutes as it cut a roughly 12-mile path of destruction through an area, the National Weather Service reported. It was nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) across at its widest, and it destroyed homes and businesses, flipped cars and knocked down rows of power lines in the region, which is roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee.
The timing — it blew in when most people were awake and after warnings had been issued — could be why there have been no reported deaths, authorities said.
"I think what helped us was it was during the week," Menasha Police Chief Matt Albrecht said at a news conference Tuesday. "Everybody was at work. It was the middle of the day. Most people were not at home and at their place of employment."
Authorities said a number of people were injured and treated at hospitals, but they didn't know exactly how many or how seriously.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Don Deaton, the longtime Bay High School football coach, athletic director and educator whose influence helped shape generations of student-athletes in Bay County, died Saturday night, Bay High School Athletics announced in a Facebook post.
Deaton spent 35 years coaching in Bay County, building a reputation as one of the area's most respected coaches and administrators. His impact on Bay High athletics extended well beyond the football field, where he became part of one of the school's most celebrated eras.

He is based in Kansas City and covers the Chiefs, Royals and college sports. Riedel has also covered the Super Bowl, the Olympic and major golf tournaments. When not shooting sports, he has covered major news events including hurricanes, oil spills, tornados and wildfires.
I was covering a watch party for Wednesday's United States-Bosnia-Herzegovina match. My ****** ignment was pretty straightforward so with the game being shown on a big screen behind me, I spent most of my time just watching the crowd. I was looking for reactions to what was happening on the screen and other moments that illustrated the joy and enthusiasm shown by the mostly U.S. fans. This photo was less of a reaction to the on-field action, but a spontaneous moment when the crowd started tossing people in the air to celebrate. I knew I had the opportunity to document this event with a photo that differs from the typical photos of fans just screaming with excitement.
I shot the watch party mostly with a 12-24 mm extreme wide angle lens as I was stationed in a buffer between the crowd and the stage. Because of this, my subjects were often only a couple feet away from me so I needed to be able to shoot as wide as possible. When the crowd started tossing people in the air, I decided I needed to show the person airborne with the sea of people watching and would need to get higher to do that. I was able to gain a couple feet of height by standing on part of the metal structure that supports the retaining wall holding the crowd back from the buffer. That was not high enough, so while standing on that structure, I shot the scene with my camera held high above my head and and guessing at the focus. This technique to get a higher angle is commonly referred among photojournalists as a “Hail Mary” photo because you are shooting somewhat blindly and “hope and pray” you get photos that are in focus, exposed properly and composed well. This photo was shot with a 12-24 mm lens at 14 mm and an aperture of 4.5 to get a little extra depth of field. The shutter speed was 1/1600 of a second which was as slow as I thought I could go to stop the action. The camera was set on auto exposure and auto white balance as the light was constantly changing in intensity and color. ISO was 10,000.
I shot a handful of people getting tossed airborne — most of them didn’t go very high or flailed awkwardly. With this photo, it all came together. The framing of the photo puts the scene in perspective and is loose enough to show how high she flew, as well as the vast crowd watching and cheering her on. Then there is the young lady being thrown —everything fell into place with her expression and body language and those red cowboy boots were the icing on the cake. A trio of Keyser juniors were named to the Class AAA All-State first team by the West Virginia Sports Writers ****** ociation.
Bibs Felton, a shortstop, was selected as an infielder after batting .626 with 12 home runs, six triples, 12 doubles, 38 runs batted in and 44 runs scored.
Catcher Brielle Root made the cut following a .458 campaign adding four homers, four three-baggers, nine two-baggers, 34 runs batted in and 23 runs.
They’re joined by the Golden Tornado ace, Leighton Johnson, who went 19-7 in the circle with a 1.96 ERA with 208 strikeouts in 139 1/3 innings pitched.
Keyser’s Tavery Lyons was an honorable mention.

Multiple tornadoes tore through Illinois and Indiana Sunday, killing at least two people as severe thunderstorms continue to sweep through the Midwest early Monday, knocking out power for tens of thousands across the region.
More than three dozen tornado reports were logged Sunday into Monday by the Storm Prediction Center, as supercell thunderstorms roared across the region.
This came on the heels of another round of tornadoes just four days earlier that leveled buildings and caused widespread destruction across the region. The previous week's storms also turned deadly as repeated bouts of severe weather swept across the central US, killing multiple people across several states.
At least two people were killed Sunday in rural Jefferson County, Illinois, around 90 miles southeast of St. Louis, according to county Sheriff Jeff Bullard.
Both victims died in separate mobile homes that were destroyed about two to three miles apart, Bullard said. A third home was completely leveled and five other people were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Bullard said.

We're still three months away from the start of the 2026 college football season, but that time will fly faster than a gnat in a tornado. From now until then, we'll see plenty of predictions and previews of the season come across our feeds, and it's no different with ESPN.
The "worldwide leader" and its resident ***** ytics guru, Bill Connelly, recently provided a preview of what we can expect in the Big Ten, and there are some interesting nuggets in there, namely with what teams will contend for the conference championship. According to Connelly, there's three teams that should be in position to contend for a Big Ten ***** le and, ultimately, get into the College Football Playoff.
According to Connelly and his SP+ Rankings, Ohio State is the favorite to win the Big Ten and a CFP contender along with Oregon and defending CFP national champion Indiana. The Buckeyes are first in SP+iin all of FBS heading into the season with the top projected defense and No. 2 projected offense in the conference.
On the way to that, Connelly also identified the five best games in the Big Ten, with Ohio State included in two of those -- Ohio State at Indiana on Oct. 17 and Oregon at Ohio State on Nov. 7. The other three games in the lot of five include USC at Penn State (Oct. 10), Indiana at Michigan (Oct. 24), and Indiana at Washington (Nov. 21).

The "worldwide leader" and its resident ***** ytics guru, Bill Connelly, recently provided a preview of what we can expect in the Big Ten, and there are some interesting nuggets in there, namely with what teams will contend for the conference championship. According to Connelly, there's three teams that should be in position to contend for a Big Ten ***** le and, ultimately, get into the College Football Playoff.
According to Connelly and his SP+ Rankings, Ohio State is the favorite to win the Big Ten and a CFP contender along with Oregon and defending CFP national champion Indiana. The Buckeyes are first in SP+iin all of FBS heading into the season with the top projected defense and No. 2 projected offense in the conference.
On the way to that, Connelly also identified the five best games in the Big Ten, with Ohio State included in two of those -- Ohio State at Indiana on Oct. 17 and Oregon at Ohio State on Nov. 7. The other three games in the lot of five include USC at Penn State (Oct. 10), Indiana at Michigan (Oct. 24), and Indiana at Washington (Nov. 21).

Tornado leaves behind 'significant' path of destruction in Houston area
More than 100 homes were damaged Monday afternoon after a tornado ripped through Harris County, Texas, Constable Mark Herman said in a Facebook post.
No serious injuries or deaths have been reported after the storm, said Brian Murray, spokesperson for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Earlier, authorities were combing through the debris searching for residents who may have been trapped or injured after the storm passed.
