FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Hauss Hejny accounted for five touchdowns to lead Colorado State to a 58-24 victory over Southern Utah on Saturday night.
Hejny finished 18 of 30 for 325 yards and threw four touchdown passes. He added 85 yards on the ground on five carries that included a 75-yard touchdown run with 12:31 left in the game to cap the scoring.
Colorado State, which is 2-0 for the first time since 2011, led 48-21 at halftime and finished with 678 yards of offense. It was their highest scoring output since posting 52 points against Boise State on Nov. 11, 2017.
Mel Brown had a 73-yard touchdown run and finished with nine carries for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Harper made six catches for 102 yards receiving with a touchdown. Terrence Smith Jr. caught two touchdown passes and finished with four receptions for 90 yards. Cedric Ross had a pair of catches for 87 yards and a score.
Will Burns was 12-of-23 passing for 233 yards and threw a touchdown pass and two interceptions for Southern Utah (1-2). Floyd Chalk had 17 catches for 144 yards with two scores for the Thunderbirds.

The Washington Huskies have a problem on offense.
Jedd Fisch's unit has now scored 40 points in their first two games combined, ten fewer points than the Huskies were favored to win those two games by (23.5 against Washington State, 26.5 against Utah State). Washington has finished with more than 350 yards of offense in both of those games, but has found itself completely unable to move the ball consistently or score points efficiently through the first two games.
Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. has struggled to throw the ball in rhythm, often opting to scramble and utilize his talent as a runner to keep the offense on track. Washington has needed that from him, too: Williams has been the Huskies' leading rusher in both games as the running back depth has been decimated by injuries to Jordan Washington, Quaid Carr, and Jayden Limar.
But there has also been opportunity for Williams to throw the ball more effectively. He's missed several what should have been easy throws in the flat and placed longer throws into the end zone out of reach of his receivers more often than he's found those plays. It hasn't been all on Williams, however: starting X receiver Christian Moss left after two snaps in the Apple Cup, and starting Z receiver Rashid Williams left early on Saturday against Utah State, thrusting true freshmen Jordan Clay and Trez Davis into action. Dezmen Roebuck and running back Trey Cooley both also dropped passes that could have easily been touchdowns on Saturday, further putting the offense behind schedule and making for a messy operation.
"As an offense, we shot ourselves in the foot a lot," Williams told the media after the game.

Chicken Little: Is it time to panic?
I wouldn't say the sky is falling, but there is certainly plenty of reason to be concerned. The Huskies' struggles on offense are excusable, but they make you seriously consider a complete shift in expectations now that their two best running backs will miss time. Washington is in desperate need of a hot start to stay as healthy as possible for the toughest games on the schedule, which come in the second half of the season. I get that rivalry games can be funky, but there is zero reason why the Apple Cup should've been as close as it was. Wazzu's offense was horrid, and Washington's was equally so until the fourth quarter. For a team wanting to compete with the Big Ten elite… that's bad. I'm not panicking just yet, but I am considering lowering my win total because I'm not sure if UW will be healthy enough to be the best version of itself.
iadawg: Ellinneus Davis was supposed to be the best defensive lineman but he only had the third most snaps of defensive linemen. Can you explain this? Thanks.
Definitely strange, but I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it unless it happens against Utah State and Eastern Washington. There's a good chance he had a minor injury bugging him, or head coach Jedd Fisch and defensive coordinator Ryan Walters saw opportunities with other lineman and took advantage. In the end, it worked out for the Huskies. His lower-than-expected usage rate is not a trend that I think will continue through the remainder of September.

The first goalie to ever play for the Utah Hockey Club is hanging up his pads for good.
Connor Ingram announced his retirement via Instagram Friday evening with a simple, yet profound caption: "Don't be sad it's over, be happy it happened. Thanks hockey, I owe ya."
The post included photos of him with the Edmonton Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning — four of the five organizations in which he played.
Ingram, 29, skated in 134 regular-season NHL games, including 22 for Utah. He also saw nine games' worth of playoff action, most recently with the Oilers in their 2026 first-round series against the Anaheim Ducks.
One of the most heroic moment of Ingram's career came just five games into it.

EL SEGUNDO -- The Los Angeles Kings held a practice in preparation for the 2026 Rookie Faceoff today at Toyota Sports Performance Center.
The Rookie Faceoff is an annual event held every year before the start of the season for some of the top prospects on certain teams, and one of many such events held throughout the NHL. This year's Rookie Faceoff takes place from Sep. 12-15 in San Jose, and will feature the Kings, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche and Utah Mammoth. Although many of the players involved will not play in the NHL this season, these events still unofficially kick off the 2026-27 campaign.
"There's definitely a feeling of, 'We're really representing the organization out of the gates to start the year,'" said Ontario Reign head coach Andrew Lord, who will lead the Rookie Faceoff team. "Yes, it's a rookie tournament … but we're representing the team."
The Kings' roster is highlighted by a handful of players, including 2025 first-round pick Henry Brzustewicz, 2025 second-round pick Vojtech Cihar, and top goalie prospects Carter George and Hampton Slukynsky. While playing together as a team, each individual player is also looking to stand out and prove themselves to the front office and the coaching staff.
"You can't worry too much about that," Slukynsky said. "Just focus on yourself and doing what you can do and controlling what you can control. Obviously, we're all competing with each other, but it's good that we push each other and we support each other and help each other get better, but everybody wants to play and compete. So it's been good and it's fun to compete with all these guys."

Arizona can start to build a convincing case as a Big 12 dark horse on Saturday in Provo, Utah, where it will take on No. 15 BYU. Aiming for a Week 2 upset, the Wildcats will reportedly have two familiar faces joining them on that quest.
The team is formally adding running back Ismail Mahdi and linebacker Max Harris — both of whom were starters on Arizona's 2025 squad — ahead of Saturday's conference tilt, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Friday.
Mahdi, the team's leading rusher a season ago, and Harris, the team's third-leading tackler last go-around, have been cleared for competition and are part of the traveling roster, per Thamel.
They are part of a group of athletes who were recently granted a temporary restraining order against the NCAA in Pima County Superior Court. So was kicker/punter Sullivan Moon, a transfer whom Arizona also added to the roster, per Thamel. Moon, though, reportedly won't be at BYU for Saturday's game.

In the first year under Curt Cignetti, it beat Western Illinois 77-3. I'll take the chance that 56.5 might be laughably low against another FCS team if history repeats itself.

The state of Utah has produced some elite quarterbacks over the years whether from high school or college – Jaxson Dart, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Jim McMahon, Steve Sarkisian – so the place knows the position.
So far this season heading into another weekend of games, high school quarterbacks in Utah are putting up huge numbers, some of the best in the country and there are not only a few of them.
The depth among stat-stuffing quarterbacks in the Beehive State is striking and influencing some of their recruitments as well.
In terms of overall passing yards, Utah high school quarterbacks have an advantage because many of them have played four games when the rest of the country has only played three but, still, their passing yards per game numbers are through the roof.
Through four games, Kingston Wright from Manti, Utah leads the country averaging 404 passing yards per game.

The Dayton Flyers will play Utah at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, in their first game at the Charleston Classic and then Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22.
The game times and the order of the opponents were announced on Thursday, Sept. 10, as tickets went on sale. The six-team field was announced in August.
There will be three games each day at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
Oklahoma State will play Minnesota at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 20 in the first game of the event. Northwestern will play Virginia Tech in the second game at 3 p.m. Dayton and Utah will play the final game of the first day.
All the teams will have Nov. 21 off.

The Oklahoma Sooners hit the road for the first time in 2026 on Saturday afternoon. OU heads to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines in the Big House in Week 2.
Michigan went 9-4 last year, but the Wolverines have changed a lot since then. Former head coach Sherrone Moore was fired at the end of the regular season, with Biff Poggi serving as the interim head coach. Michigan hired former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham as the new head man on December 26th.
Whittingham coached Utah from 2005 to 2025, posting a 177-88 record as the head man of the Utes. His teams won three conference ****** les and played in three more conference ****** le games. The Wolverines were looking for a stable presence in the wake of everything that happened with Moore and his predecessor Jim Harbaugh, and they certainly got that in the veteran Whittingham. He'll square off with Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables in a huge game for both programs.
Michigan won at home last week against Western Michigan, 13-12. That victory came in controversial fashion, as the Wolverines were given an extra second on the clock after it appeared the game was over. Michigan used that second to throw a Hail Mary that was caught for the win. After escaping by the slimmest of margins, the Wolverines will certainly play a lot better on Saturday than they did last week.
On offense, Venables will be matched up against offensive coordinator Jason Beck, who came over with Whittingham. Beck has led strong offenses at New Mexico in 2024 and at Syracuse in 2023. His scheme is know for a stout rushing attack that also runs the quarterback a lot, something the Sooners got a heavy dose of last week against UTEP.

Former Arizona Coyotes fans can perhaps find something positive about the NHL's potential expansion plan, but no guarantees.
The league's deputy commissioner, Bill Daly, said on Thursday, Sept. 8, that the league is in further discussions to add three teams from its current 32. Possibilities include Arizona, Atlanta and a team in Houston or Austin, Texas. ESPN first reported the news.
The Coyotes were sold by owner Alex Meruelo and relocated to become the Utah Mammoth.
"I don't think we ever soured on Phoenix as a market," Daly said at the NHL and National Hockey League Player ***** ociation (NHLPA) player media tour in Las Vegas. "I think our issue in Phoenix was the location of the building. It's always the location of the building.
"I think with the right location, we collectively believe that Phoenix would be a great market."

Although he still gets a good chuckle over the mistake that EA Sports' "College Football 27″ made in July when it depicted him as being of a different race, BYU's Cannon DeVries hopes he will now be known more for his plays on the football field than a botched likeness on a video game.
The sophomore defensive back from North Ogden and Weber High made that a possibility last Saturday. DeVries returned two punts for a combined 73 yards and a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in BYU's 63-7 win over Utah Tech.
The big returns helped him earn Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors, but, more importantly, gave him a healthy dose of confidence as he enters his second season in Provo.
"Yeah, it meant a lot. That is something that I had the goal to reach and to get, so to get it the first week was pretty special for me," DeVries said after BYU's practice Wednesday. "As a young kid, I always believed that I could do special things on the field, so being able to go out and do them was definitely a dream come true."
DeVries also got the start in the defensive backfield from his nickel position and recorded a tackle. He was just as thrilled that secondary mates Tre Alexander, Evan Johnson and Matthias Leach recorded interceptions in the opener.

Over the past few days, several national college football publications and websites have released power ranking lists for all 138 FBS college football teams following Week 0 and Week 1 of the 2026 college football season. None of these sites have been particularly kind to Rutgers following their season-opening 37-21 loss to UMass, with almost all of them dropping the Scarlet Knights by double-digit rankings. The most brutal of these sites was The Athletic, which dropped Rutgers 57 spots from 79 to 136.
First off, the ******* le of the article is "Re-ranking 138 college football teams after Week 1: LSU starts on top, Rutgers hits a new low"- not a fun start by any means. The rest of the parts of the article that mention Rutgers aren't much better.
"The most shocking win was, of course, UMass' 37-21 victory at Rutgers, ending a 16-game losing streak and 23-game Football Bowl Subdivision losing streak. For that, the Minutemen rise to No. 100. It's the first time since early in the 2025 season that UMass is not ranked last, and it's the first time in 10 years of these rankings that UMass is inside the top 100. The Minutemen's previous high was No. 102 late in the 2018 season. Congrats to UMass," said Athletic writer Chris Vannini in the article.
"Rutgers falls all the way to No. 136 for that blowout loss to UMass, which wasn't as close as the 16-point final margin would indicate. This is the new lowest position for a Power 4 team in 10 years of these rankings," said Athletic writer Chris Vannini in the article.
While Rutgers' performance against UMass is inexcusable and has put the Knights in the same ranking bracket as teams like Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Utah State and Charlotte in the eyes of the Athletic. While Rutgers' loss to UMass is an incredibly tough pill to swallow, being rated in the bottom three teams in the country still seems a little low. Even a terrible Big Ten team should be able to stay out of there.

Megyn Kelly wants to see Erika Kirk step away from her role running Turning Point USA — because she wants the grieving mother of two to find time to heal.
Kelly shared her concern with Piers Morgan on the latter's Piers Morgan Uncensored, as the two discussed the one year anniversary of Charlie Kirk's ***** assination at a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
Morgan brought up a recent essay on grief Erika Kirk, 37, wrote last week for The New York Times:
PIERS MORGAN: And the reason I found it so powerful was it reminded us that there is a human being here, a wife and a mother who lost her husband, who she was obviously very in love with, the loving father of her kids and I think people have just treated her like some weird commodity for the last year.

Former NBA player Byron Scott won three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s, but he doesn't see this current iteration of the team going all the way. On the latest episode of Byron Scott's Fast Break podcast, Scott was asked whether the new-look Lakers are contenders or pretenders.
"I'm not going to say borderline," Scott said. "They're pretenders… I think they'll make the playoffs, but again, to [Olden Polynice's] point, defense wins championships still in this league. I know we glorify the threes and all the offense and things of that nature, but at the end of the day, you got to get stops, right?
"And [Walker] Kessler at the center position, he better average about eight blocks a game," Scott added. "Because they going to be getting a lot of blowbys, and the guys going to get to that basket."
Walker Kessler is the Lakers' biggest summer acquisition, and they desperately needed a defensive anchor like him. The Lakers gave up two first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps to the Utah Jazz for Kessler and gave him a four-year, $130 million contract as part of a sign-and-trade.
Scott, who also coached the Lakers from 2014 to 2016, believes Kessler will help, but doesn't see too many other good defensive players around him. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are the two other guaranteed starters, and both have had their struggles on that end of the floor.

From the opening kickoff to the final whistle, Rice-Eccles Stadium is a cacophony of noise.
Some 51,444 fans are at full throat when the Utes score a touchdown or when the opposing defense is on the field. During the breaks in the three-plus-hour event, there's still noise at all times, from the marching band to music blasting from the speakers to the in-game presenter hyping fans up or announcing the contest.
There is one moment, aside from when the Utes are on offense, when Rice-Eccles Stadium falls relatively silent — during the break following the end of the third quarter.
For six consecutive years, the "Moment of Loudness" has become a closely-held tradition at Utah, one born out of tragedy.
In the span of just nine months, two University of Utah football players died. Ty Jordan, a freshman running back, died from an accidental shooting on Christmas night in 2020. Nine months later, sophomore cornerback Aaron Lowe, who was friends with Jordan and changed his number to Jordan's No. 22 for the upcoming season, was shot and killed at a party in September 2021.

BYU coach Kalani Sitake gave a shoutout to the fans following the Cougars' season-opening 63-7 win over Utah Tech late Saturday night.
Even with BYU taking on an FCS opponent, Sitake was impressed not just with his team's play, but with the fan support in the home opener at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
He believes it set an impressive standard for players who transferred in from other schools, in their first experience playing at home in Provo.
"Really proud of the team, proud of the way the guys played, proud of the energy that we had. And just want to tell all the fans, thank you so much for your energy. They stayed here till the very end. The ROC (BYU's student section) was here the whole entire time," Sitake said.
"(That) impressed a lot of our players that came from the portal, been other places. They couldn't believe the support that the fans had for the team and the energy — made a lot of noise. And you know, we're going to need them next week (vs. Arizona). It's going to be a lot of fun, but we need them all year long."

San Diego native Maddie Mercado scored the game-winning goal in the 29th minute as Seattle Reign FC defeated San Diego Wave FC 1-0 at Lumen Field on Sunday evening. The 25-year-old forward has now scored in both matches against her hometown team this season.
Mercado has continued her breakout season for Seattle, leading the team with eight goals. Claudia ****** ey had a standout performance between the posts, logging six saves and securing a clean sheet before leaving the match late due to an injury. Reign backup goalkeeper Cassie Miller replaced ****** ey late in the match.
Since returning from the summer break, Seattle remains unbeaten at home and has entered the playoff picture with this result. They handed San Diego its first loss since early August, snapping its two-game win streak. Wave FC is now tied for third place in the standings alongside the NC Courage and Utah Royals, with 39 points.
San Diego played with 10 players for most of the match after rookie defender Mimi Van Zanten made a questionable challenge during a Seattle transition play. Van Zanten and Kennedy Wesley were the last line of defense, and Van Zanten tripped Maddie Dahlien far away from the net.
After further review, the referee deemed the play a denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and gave her a red card in the 13th minute. Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall looked to his bench for defensive help, subbing on Brooklyn Courtnall for skilled forward Melanie Barcenas.

SEATTLE — Demond Williams Jr. threw for 268 yards and a touchdown, and No. 17 Washington survived offensive struggles for a 24-10 victory over Washington State in a season-opening Apple Cup on Sunday.
Williams also scored on a 5-yard keeper in the 118th meeting of the two teams, who were once both part of the Pac-12. Washington won last year's meeting 59-24 in Pullman.
Transfer Caden Pinnick made his debut as quarterback for the Cougars, throwing for 142 yards and scoring on an 11-yard keeper in the fourth quarter.
Washington State was one of the remaining members of the Pac-12 left after realignment broke apart the conference ahead of the 2024 season. The Cougars and Oregon State helped re-build the conference, which now includes Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State, along with non-football member Gonzaga.
The Huskies, meanwhile, bolted the Pac-12 for the Big Ten. Washington went 9-4 last season with a 38-10 win over Boise State in the LA Bowl.

There was little doubt prior to kickoff that BYU's season opener against Utah Tech wasn't going to go exactly as it went. The No. 14-ranked Cougars, a seven-touchdown favorite, overwhelmed the Trailblazers in all phases of the game to win by eight touchdowns, 63-7.

Wait, what? The flyweight belt that Valentina Shevchenko has defended a whopping nine times since 2018 across two ****** le runs? That's now vacant? When announcing Silva vs. Cong, they cited a "Bullet" injury but didn't really get into details on how the belt was put back up for grabs. A statement from Shevchenko's coach Pavel Fedotov gave a bit more info.
"We were supposed to fight on October 3 against Natalia Silva, but due to an injury to the ligaments in the shoulder and back, we decided not to push things and postpone the fight," Fedotov wrote (via Ushatayka). In the past, you might expect to see an interim ****** le go up for grabs after similar injuries taking under a year to heal. But these days, the UFC has gotten into the habit of asking its injured champions to relinquish their belts. Jamahal Hill did it when he ruptured his Achilles tendon, and so did Jiri Prochazka when he injured his shoulder. Now we've got Valentina Shevchenko doing it.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Embarrassing. An embarrassment. And more embarrassing beyond that.
The Kyle Whittingham era was supposed to embody toughness, discipline, playing smart, and doing things the right way. After saying all of the right things and appearing to be confident in what Michigan football would bring to the table in his debut in Ann Arbor, Whittingham's team was not only the opposite of everything he espouses, it was a debacle in every way. The Wolverines were a miracle away from, at best, the second-worst loss in program history, and given what the head coach's teams had been for two-plus decades in Salt Lake City, it's a head-scratcher.
The opening offensive drive was as impressive as the rest of the game was bad. Despite mistakes, quarterback Bryce Underwood sliced through the Western Michigan defense like a hot knife through ***** er, making what ended up being fall camp bluster look prescient. But that was it. 75 yards on the opening drive, and a 47-yard Hail Mary aside, it accounted for all but 154 yards accumulated all game. The offense, against a supposedly overmatched foe, made the Sherrone Moore-era offense look like the air raid by comparison. The defense got off the field, surrendering little in terms of points, sure, but it also allowed the Broncos to hold the ball for over 40 minutes, including a 13-minute, 40-second drive spanning from the third to fourth quarters. When the offense got the ball back, it quickly relinquished possession after three plays, managing seven yards on first down before deciding that moving the ball forward was anathema to its goals.
And then there were the other mistakes: missed ***** ignments, an ***** ortment of penalties, and all-around bad play. It wasn't just the opposite of what was expected; it was the opposite of how Whittingham's teams in Utah played for 21 years.
"I'm going to reserve judgment on that until I dissect the film," Whittingham said after the game. "But we talked about how we improved dramatically through fall camp. That's a fact. I mean, there's no one that attended practice that wouldn't tell you anything different. We had former players there, and everybody had the same ***** ysis. And so, and we're not -- I'm not saying that Bryce played a bad game. This isn't on Bryce Underwood. This is, like I said, it's on me, and I've got to figure out a way to have these guys better prepared and be able to get into a rhythm offensively. It's like we never got into a rhythm after that first drive. We always found a way to screw it up. We were like 0-for-5 or 0-for-6 before we converted on third down. And you just can't win football games like that. We were very fortunate to win, obviously."

SANDY, Utah -- For a team that has spent much of the season being defined by its defense, LAFC is finding that its biggest problem at the wrong time of the year may be keeping the ball out of its own net.
The Black & Gold had another chance Saturday to turn its position near the top of the Western Conference into some breathing room. Instead, a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake at America First Field extended LAFC's winless run to five MLS matches, leaving a team that is still sitting third in the West wondering how many more points it can afford to leave behind.
Marc Dos Santos knew the match was going to open up. LAFC's three-man back line was designed in part to take advantage of RSL's struggles in transition, and for stretches, it worked exactly as intended. The problem was what happened when LAFC had to defend those same open **** es.
"Sometimes the game was a little bit too open," Dos Santos said. "It benefited us more than in the offensive phase, but it was sometimes difficult in the defensive phase that we have to be more compact at moments."
That lack of compactness showed up early.

Nebraska volleyball (4-0) will play in one of baseball's legendary venues on Sunday night. The Cornhuskers will face the Missouri Tigers in the Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.
Since Volleyball Day in Nebraska in 2023, the Huskers have played in five different professional stadiums across the last four seasons. This match at Wrigley Field against Missouri is the sixth professional venue for the Huskers to play in since 2023.
This will be the 79th meeting all-time between these two schools, with Nebraska holding a 74-3-1 lead in the series. The last time the Huskers and the Tigers played was a Nebraska sweep in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2023.
Nebraska setter Bergen Reilly was named Big Ten Setter of the Week last week. The senior averages 10.70 ******* ists and 2.10 digs per set.
Missouri middle blocker Lauren Larkin leads the SEC with a hitting percentage of .564. This is Larkin's first season with the Tigers, after spending the last two seasons with Utah State.

Two of the biggest figures when Utah took the Rice-Eccles Stadium field Thursday night for its 2026 season opener were starting quarterback Devon Dampier and head coach Morgan Scalley — for obvious reasons.
Dampier is back for his senior year, and after dealing with injury during a successful 2025 campaign, he has his sights set on a memorable season. And more importantly, he's healthy.
Scalley, meanwhile, became the sixth straight Utah head coach to win the first game of his first full season as coach, as the No. 21 Utes rolled to a 66-14 victory over FCS opponent Idaho.
There were plenty of smiles from Utah fans, coaches and players throughout the night, as the Utes kicked off the new era in style.
"He was like, 'Y'all, we've been doing this for months now, so just go out there, do what you do. We're all going to make mistakes, but at the end of the day, forget it, move on to the next play,'" Dampier said of Scalley. "Just the way he carried himself definitely brought a different impact to us."
