The Federal Reserve's interest rate hike — the first in three years — is a policy shift that will have a domino effect for retirees.
Those in retirement and those nearing retirement need to factor interest rates into their investment decisions. To explain what the Fed hike might mean, Yahoo Finance talked to several wealth management advisers and finance professionals.
First off, it's important to keep in mind that one quarter-point rate hike won't drastically alter anyone's fortunes.
"A single rate hike rarely helps or hurts a retiree outright," said Michael Cochran, chief investment officer at BentOak Capital in Fort Worth, Texas. "It reshuffles the deck where there are benefits, but also some pressures."
A rate hike could be good news because it means that savings yields will likely rise, said LendingTree chief consumer finance **** yst Matt Schulz.

President Trump reacted to Wednesday's Fed rate hike, saying "Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less" and acknowledging he discussed with Kevin Warsh the Fed chair's plans for how to vote ahead of time.
"I talked to Kevin and I said, 'you might as well vote with the board because it's not going to matter,'" Trump told reporters Wednesday evening.
The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to raise rates by 25 basis points, its first hike in three years and the first under Warsh.
The president, who has spent more than a year calling for lower rates, first posted on Truth Social that rates should be dropping and that the trade deficit was a reason to "LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!" days after he threatened to stop trading with countries that have a trade deficit unless the Fed cuts rates.
Later Wednesday, when he was asked by reporters if he still has confidence in Warsh, Trump said he did, but said "he's got a very tough board." He called the FOMC "a bunch of politicians."

AI investors are weighing warnings from technology executives about the safety risks posed by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. However, some believe that slowing AI development could leave the US behind China and other competitors in the global race. Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, said on CNBC that he supports AI safety measures but believes some fears are being exaggerated to advance a political agenda.
"I've not talked to a single person in AI who says, full steam ahead, disregard safety," Gerstner said. "It turns out we all care about kids. We all care about the future of the country. We know the massive benefits it offers, but we also want to take the extra time to make sure that we do this safely. But what I didn't like this week is these hyperbolic scare tactics, which I think are hiding behind a political agenda. We learn that all of this catastrophizing about data centers may in fact, have had support from the CCP. Right? So I want a little investigation. Who is behind all of this negativity? Is it coordinated? Right? Where is the money coming from?"
Altimeter's second-quarter 13F filings show that the fund opened new positions in several technology and AI-related companies, including Qualcomm (QCOM) and Micron Technology (MU).
Altimeter bought 1.88 million Qualcomm shares valued at about $347.9 million as of June 30. The position accounted for 3.54% of the fund's reported US equity portfolio. It also acquired 209,520 Micron shares worth roughly $241.8 million, representing 2.46% of the portfolio.

The Detroit Lions may be doing more than simply monitoring the Joey Porter Jr. situation.
According to a new report from Jeff Risdon, Detroit has contacted the Pittsburgh Steelers about the veteran cornerback's availability, potentially turning weeks of speculation into something more tangible.
Risdon said he has been told from the Pittsburgh side that conversations between the teams have taken place.
"I can tell you that I know that the Lions have approached the Steelers," Risdon said on Monday. "I don't know how receptive the Steelers were. I don't know what the Lions offered, if anything. I know that they have talked. I got that from a reliable source from the Pittsburgh side. Will anything happen? I don't know."
That does not mean a trade is imminent. It does mean the Porter-to-Detroit idea may have moved beyond the purely hypothetical stage.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever wing Sophie Cunningham has thoughts on what a new WNBA commissioner should bring to the table. And she's already had conversations with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who is leading the search for the new WNBA commissioner, about it.

At the Solheim Cup, we watched pros do something difficult that a lot of average golfers attempt, too: play team golf. It's different from typical stroke play, or even one-on-one match play events. We talked to Megan Johnston, a Golf Digest Best Young Teacher at Big Cedar who played on the Northern Ireland junior team with Solheim Cup standout Leona Maguire, about how average players can more seamlessly make the transition into team play.
"The biggest adjustment for the average golfer is realizing that the goal of the format may not be to shoot your lowest individual score," Johnston explains. "In four-ball, foursomes or a scramble, you're making decisions based on what your team needs. That changes everything—from club selection, to risk management, to how aggressive you should be at the right times."

Eli Willits has made his primary goal crystal clear ever since he joined the Nationals organization. He wants to be a big leaguer by the time he is 20 years old. For most players, that is a pipe dream. However, Eli Willits is not most players and he made that very obvious this season.
The 18 year old just finished his first professional season in style. Willits got promoted to Double-A for the last week of the season. While he only got to play three games, the last one was legendary. Willits had a four hit game which included his first AA home run and two stolen bases. It was an amazing final act to a wonderful season.
With Willits finishing the season in AA, he is putting himself in position to make a debut late in 2027. Despite being such a young player, Willits is remarkably polished. This comes from being the son of a big leaguer and being obsessed with the game ever since he could walk.
When I talked to Willits earlier this season, it was very clear that three things truly mattered to him. Eli Willits is all about family, faith and baseball. You will be hard pressed to find a more business-like 18 year old out there. As Willits put it, he grew up in an MLB clubhouse and it is easy to see that.
That baseball IQ manifests itself on the field. When I watched Willits for the first time in Low-A, the thing that stuck out to me most was how natural he looked. Willits looked like a big league caliber defender at shortstop already. While many young shortstops, even the defensively gifted ones make a lot of errors, Willits is already so secure. He only made 8 errors all season as an 18 year old.

The 2027 NFL Draft class was talked up to be loaded with quarterbacks, which was much-needed for many NFL teams coming off of what many claimed was a one-QB class in 2026. Before the college football season, this was billed as one of the most talented QB classes in recent memory.
So far, that hasn't necessarily played out on the field. Dante Moore, our No. 1 quarterback on the board in the preseason, has looked awful, to put it bluntly. Arch Manning and Julian Sayin were up-and-down in their blockbuster Week 2 clash between Ohio State and Texas.
On the other side of the coin, Darian Mensah and Trinidad Chambliss have been very impressive so far in the opening few weeks, and CJ Carr has also played very well against a soft schedule to open the year.

It's the eve of the Washington Commanders' season opener, so they have made a roster move.
It's not unusual for the Commanders, or the other 31 NFL teams, to make a roster move or two the day before a game. As the season progresses, you will notice these are often injury-related, where the Commanders will elevate a player from the practice squad to the active roster to fill in for an injured player who is going to be inactive on game day.
In this case, the Commanders just released offensive tackle D.J. Humphries on Friday. Thus, Washington announced Saturday it is elevating C/G Julian Good-Jones (JGJ) from the practice squad for Sunday's 2026 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

JGJ was perhaps the most talked-about backup during training camp and the preseason in the DMV. BOISE, ID — For the first time in the Charles Huff era, Memphis football lost.
The Tigers (2-1) lost 38-20 to Boise State (1-1) thanks to a 35-3 run by the Broncos that started at the end of the first half and carried over into a dominant second half. It's a loss that establishes Boise State as the top team in the Group of Six even before conference play has started for most teams.
"What's delayed is not denied," Huff said after the game. "We've still got a long road ahead. No one in our building talked perfection. We all talked about getting better each week. Although the scoreboard doesn't reveal us getting better, we can learn from how we played today."
Both teams came in planning to lean heavily on their running game. Boise State ultimately won that battle by a landslide, as the Broncos ran for 357 yards and averaged 7.6 yards per carry.
Huff said after the game that he thought Memphis' defense wore down a little bit in the second half. He also said Boise State didn't do much schematically that confused the Tigers.

The Cleveland Browns are set to kick off their 2026 regular season Sunday afternoon when they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road. The team announced on Friday that they would be starting two rookies on their offensive line, ruling out Teven Jenkins and announcing that third-round pick Austin Barber would get the start at right guard.
Cleveland is also calling up two players from its practice squad to the active roster for Sunday's game, elevating linebacker Nathaniel Watson and cornerback D'Angelo Ross. ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi reports that both elevations are special teams-related, which makes sense, as both have clear skill sets to contribute in that area of the game.
It will be interesting to see who ends up on the inactive list after these elevations; we know at least one of them is already Tevin Jenkins. Todd Monken talked about having all three quarterbacks active to use a package for rookie Taylen Green, which will be something to watch as kickoff gets closer.

The Oklahoma Sooners dropped to 1-1 in the 2026 season after a 17-10 loss on the road against the Michigan Wolverines. OU failed their first test of the season and played poor, sloppy football in a bad loss.
Expectations were sky-high entering the season, but just two games into Year 5 under head coach Brent Venables, the Sooners saw their season crumble in Ann Arbor. All of the offseason talk and hype that surrounded Oklahoma fell flat in the Big House.
Firstly, though the defense was much better in the second half, the Sooners did not look like a Venables-led defense in the first half. After riding the defense to 10 wins and a spot in the College Football Playoff last season, this year's defense isn't nearly as good, at least not yet. In addition to a loss on their record, the OU defense will also be without their heart and soul for a large chunk of time, as linebacker Kip Lewis was injured in the loss.
Despite only giving up 17 total points, Oklahoma's defense tackled poorly, didn't force any turnovers, and was outflanked often in the first half. The second half was far better on that side of the ball, but the Sooners still lost because of their anemic offense.
All offseason, the Sooners talked about being better at running the ball and more committed to it. That lasted one game, as Oklahoma actually looked worse on offense on Saturday than they did last year. They abandoned the running backs in the running game, and the multiple-look structure-wise largely went out the window.

Los Angeles Dodgers two-time World Series champion Miguel Rojas is set to have an emotional day on Sunday, September 13th, as he plays in what may be his final game for his longtime team.
Rojas has not played this series against the Marlins since they faced two different right-handed pitchers, with Alex Freeland taking all of the looks at second base.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said a California woman was fatally shot outside a Sacramento County Panera Bread Tuesday by an illegal immigrant who had stalked her for months and was subject to a restraining order.

Taylor is preparing for the second year of his collegiate career with the Bulldogs. He made 11 appearances that included two starts in 2025, throwing for 629 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Taylor also finished third on the team in rushing yards with 458 on just 82 carries while leading the team in rushing touchdowns with eight.
Saban talked about Taylor's skillset during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. He believed that the quarterback will exceed expectations and surprise a lot of people as a player in the SEC.

But in true Dolly style, she defused anger and outrage with a strategy Clark calls a "label upgrade." It's a trick that worked well for Parton, and one Clark is sure can work for anyone during conversations that may turn offensive without warning.
In the clip shared on her Instagram, Clark highlights moments from the 1978 ABC News interview between Walters and Parton.
Walters first questions Parton about her looks, stating, "Dolly, you don't have to look like this. You're very beautiful. You don't have to wear the blonde wigs. You don't have to wear the extreme clothes, right?"

Dolly Parton never recovered from the death of her husband, Carl Dean, a friend tells In Touch exclusively.
"It was a bad time for her," Jason Pirro, who worked as the country icon's driver for 58 years, says of Dean's March 2025 death at 82 following an Alzheimer's diagnosis.
"She didn't say much, but she sometimes talked about how much she missed him so much. She didn't want to make a big deal about it because she knew that I knew how she was affected by it," says Pirro, 80, noting that the pair often traveled between their homes in LA and Tennessee to spend time with each other until he got sick.
Over their 60-year love story, they "shared a unique happiness that seemed to sparkle whenever they were together," he adds.
"I think that's why she passed away so soon after he did," Pirro tells In Touch. "She died of a broken heart, but she didn't want to say that because she didn't want people feeling sorry for her."
