LONDON, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The Bank of England raised interest rates for the first time in over three years on Thursday and warned that at least one more increase was likely if the US-Iran conflict continues, as it started on a path that its main peers have already embarked on.
British inflation ‌is likely to reach around 5% in the middle of next year, the BoE said, more than double the central bank's target and a blow for new Prime Minister Andy Burnham ‌who has sought to ease cost of living pressures.
While there was little evidence so far of faster inflation outside sectors directly affected by higher energy costs, the BoE said the amount of inflation pressure coming down the road from months of high energy prices required a rate rise now.
"Today's increase shouldn't be seen as the first in an inevitable long sequence of hikes. But unless the conflict in the Middle East is resolved, neither does it seem likely to be the last increase," Governor Andrew Bailey said.

Silver prices could be approaching their final low, according to veteran trader Peter Brandt. However, he expects any subsequent recovery to be gradual rather than explosive.
The precious metal traded at $53.18 per ounce on Thursday, up 1.76% on the day. That still leaves it about 56% below its January record of $121.74.

Herbert Blomstedt, who headed the San Francisco Symphony from 1985-95 and led orchestras in Scandinavia and Germany during a career over seven decades, died Wednesday. He was 99.
Blomstedt died at his home in Gothenburg, Sweden, according to his management agency, KünstlerSekretariat am Gasteig.
His final performance was on May 15 with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall, when he entered the stage in a wheelchair and struggled to get through Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, which halted for several minutes during the third movement.

John Frieda, the celebrity hairstylist whose eponymous product range — its beloved Frizz Ease serum, especially — proved a commercial sensation, has died aged 75.
The British entrepreneur, who counted Madonna and Princess Diana among his clients, died "peacefully" and "surrounded by his family," according to a statement posted to his Instagram by his London salon on Wednesday.
"His talent and passion touched so many, and his legacy will live on in every single one of us," the statement added, describing Frieda as "a true icon of the hair industry." His stepdaughter Agnelli Lagrange also confirmed the news on social media, where she called him "the best man to ever exist." Neither statement specified a cause of death.
The son of a hairdresser (and the grandson of a barber), Frieda was born Alan Howard Frieda in London in 1951. He started going by the name John after joining London's famous House of Leonard, because the salon already employed an Alan.

It is well known that dogs can struggle with the loud bangs that come with fireworks, and are often unsettled during this time of year. Dafne Keen says she was offered cocaine at wrap parties as a child. The actor was around 11 to 13 and says she refused. During a recent podcast appearance, Keen explained that seeing adults drink and use drugs helped her avoid both.
Dafne Keen, now 21, discussed her choices during an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast. She told the host that she has "never been drunk enough to even have a hangover," describing herself as a "control freak" about drinking. Seeing that culture as a child made her wary of trying it herself.
When Rosenbaum asked about the drinking she had witnessed, Keen revealed that she was "getting offered ****** e at wrap parties." According to the charity, the winners were recognised for creating "positive change in their communities and beyond." Dr. Tessy Ojo CBE, the charity's chief executive, also praised the group. "These young people are proof that, whatever their background or circumstances, the desire to make a difference is universal," she said.
However, reports from Page Six suggest that the common gesture does not appear to signal a thaw. The brothers last appeared together at a public engagement in July 2021, when they unveiled a statue of Diana at Kensington Palace on what would have been her 60th birthday. Since then, they have seemed distant at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and at a 2024 memorial service for their uncle.
While they are now in the same country again, they are not believed to be in contact. Harry has spoken about the rift. "I want it to work out. Of course I do," he said, while also admitting that reconciling is hard. The escalation of tensions can be traced to 2020, when Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior working royals.

The 46-year-old actor shared the surprising revelation on his That Was Us podcast, telling former costars Mandy Moore, 42, and Sterling K. Brown, 50, that he was the voice behind GEICO's iconic "Hump Day" camel.

And we know this wasn't some newfound love Buffett had for **** e. His company, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), built its stake in Coca-Cola (KO) between 1988 and 1994 for about $1.3 billion. Coca-Cola has split its stock since then, so that stake is now 400 million shares.
Coca-Cola pays $0.53 a share in dividends each quarter, or $2.12 a year. This means Berkshire gets paid roughly $848 million a year for its investment. That's about 65% of what Berkshire originally paid, coming back in a single year. And since Coca-Cola raises its dividend every year, that number keeps growing. Back in 1994, the same shares paid Berkshire about $75 million a year, not even one-tenth of what it earns today. At around $96 a share, the stake is now worth approximately $38.4 billion. Berkshire still holds the entire stake, and its CEO, Greg Abel, called Coca-Cola one of four core holdings.

Election-night returns counted by The Center Square showed Prop. 40 losing 56.5% to 43.5%, with 68.5% of precincts partially reporting. According to The Center Square, the measure would have imposed a one-time 5% tax on residents with wealth of $1 billion or more. News outlets widely reported its defeat.
