It's trade deadline season, and though this has been a tame deadline period so far, the continuous swirl of rumors and (eventually) actual transactions will be the focus of much of the baseball world in the coming days. Yesterday, we discussed which players the Yankees were most likely to move, and today, we ask: what weakness do the Yankees most need to address, and which one are they most likely to address?
The answer to this question has been fluid throughout the year. Early on, it seemed obvious to most that the Yankees would need to make big additions to their bullpen, yet here we are at the end of July, and the Yankee relief corps has the second-best ERA in the majors. Paul Blackburn has proven to be the second coming of Luke Weaver, Brent Headrick almost never allows runs, David Bednar has been the top-tier closer the team envisioned, and Matt Blake's latest reclamation project, Angel Chivilli, has looked dynamite since his most recent call-up. Add in the fact that players like Will Warren and Ryan Weathers (and perhaps Carlos Lagrange?) could get shifted to the bullpen if they're not traded, and the unit looks like an area of strength, not weakness.
At other times, the matter of the infield appeared to be most pressing. Ryan McMahon and Jazz Chisholm Jr. each got off to nightmarish starts, and the shortstop duo of Anthony Volpe and José Caballero has had its ups and downs. But even on the dirt, things don't look nearly as shaky as they did two or three months ago. Since seeing his OPS bottom out at .498 on April 22nd, Chisholm has played exactly as expected, with a .239/.309/.463 slash line and 16 homers plus 21 steals. McMahon has run a roughly .750 OPS over the last two months while bringing his usual quality defense at third base. And despite his penchant for high-profile miscues, Volpe's combination of high-OBP and good range at short has made him a valuable contributor.
Then, there's the most obvious need now, at catcher, with Yankee backstops having combined to "hit" .181/.261/.284. But even adding a catcher comes with major complications, as most teams are loath to make significant changes to their caching room midseason. For as awful as Austin Wells and Co. have been with the bat this year, a catcher's primary job is to catch, to field his position, to manage his pitching staff. The Yankee backstops have done that portion of their job with aplomb this year (it's probably not a coincidence that the Yankees prioritize defense at catcher and have the best team ERA in baseball), and it's not trivial to just add a plus bat to that room without shaking things up on the run-prevention front.
Add it all up, and it leaves the Yankee roster in a weird spot heading into a crucial deadline. The roster has been slammed by injuries and has some seemingly clear places to upgrade, but actually making those upgrades is less straightforward than it might appear. What do you think? Everything in the world of Gonzaga basketball hinges on the courtroom right now. Mario Saint-Supery was lured away from his upcoming sophomore season by a four-year contract to play professionally in Valencia, and Mark Few was left without a point guard. That vacated roster spot, as well as the one left open by one-time commit Jack Kayil, however, may have come at exactly the right time. UCLA's Donovan Dent and Skyy Clark are among the group of fifth-year seniors suing the NCAA for one more season of eligibility, and Gonzaga is reportedly in the mix for both. If the Zags are able to land both, this roster stops looking like an eleventh-hour rebuild and starts looking like the key ingredients for a top-five squad.
This is particularly vital because Gonzaga's non-conference slate for the 2026-27 season is arguably the toughest Mark Few has ever scheduled. The Bulldogs are already projected in the AP preseason top 20-to-25 range even before the eligibility rulings (hopefully) break their way, and the schedule does not let up from November through February.
Gonzaga has never been the type of team to schedule a patty-cake non-conference schedule and hopefully start firing on all cylinders by the time conference play rolls around. Rather, the Zags have spent the last decade scheduling a grueling non-conference slate to serve as a preview of the kind of competition they expect to see again in late March. Here are the games Zag fans should circle on their calendars now, regardless of who will or won't actually be suiting up for the Bulldogs.

Iran publicly hanged two young men Tuesday over their alleged roles in January's nationwide anti-government protests, as onlookers chanted "Dishonorable, dishonorable!" before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an exiled Iranian opposition group.
Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi were hanged Tuesday in Isfahan's Shahid Alikhani Square — where authorities alleged they committed offenses connected to the Jan. 8 protests, according to the NCRI and Iranian state media.
The NCRI said onlookers condemned the executions before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. The opposition group also said security personnel had been deployed on rooftops and surrounding streets.

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, ENGLAND – Nelly Korda put a 4-iron into the bag for the first time at a British Open this week at Royal Lytham. There won't be many drivers off the tee for her at this bunkerfest. Maybe four or five, tops, she said.
Like many, Korda has a love/hate relationship with links golf, depending on the day and the bounces. It doesn't help that it's the fifth major of the year in a packed summer schedule. She typically finds herself more on edge at this point in the season.
"I would say with it being kind of in a condensed part of our schedule, I get pretty agitated," she said, "and I think what I learned is I just need to take a step back and hit the reset ***** on sometimes."
Korda comes into the season's final major at the 2026 AIG Women's British Open with a chance to both qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame and complete the career grand slam. After a missed cut at the Amundi Evian Championship, her first time missing a weekend in two years, the world No. 1 took some time off in Prague and then headed to the ISPS Handa Scottish Open, where she finished on a high note to jump into the top 20.

Tennessee said Wednesday that linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended for the first two games of the 2026 season by the NCAA after he repaid an agent for a flight he took during the NFL's pre-draft process.
Carter explored entering the 2026 NFL Draft before deciding to return for his senior season. As he was looking at entering the draft, an agent paid for a $427 plane ticket. After Carter suffered an injury while working out before the draft, he returned to school and paid for the flight.
However, the NCAA deemed the initial payment of that ticket by the agent to be a Level III violation because players and their families are not allowed to take material benefits from agents, including transportation. And a spokesperson for the school told the Knoxville News Sentinel that Carter had actually been suspended for three games before it was reduced down to two.
"We disagree with the NCAA's ruling on punishing Arion with a multi-game suspension this fall," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said in a statement. Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being. He will proudly graduate from Tennessee in public health with Dean's List honors in August. Our team stands behind AC and his family, and we can't wait to be on the field with him during training camp this week."
Carter was Tennessee's third-leading tackler in 2025 despite missing three games because of a foot injury that flared up as he was looking to turn pro. He had 76 stops and six tackles for loss across 10 games. He'll miss the team's Week 1 game against Furman and its Week 2 matchup vs. Georgia Tech.

Brooks Koepka will not be playing in Detroit after all.
The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday, July 28, the five-time major champion has withdrawn from the 2026 Rocket Classic after committing to the tournament on July 13.
Ben Silverman will take his place in the 147-player field that is now finalized (see full field and tee times below).
Koepka has had a unique schedule this year for a player as accomplished as himself. He had to earn his status back on the PGA Tour after leaving for the start-up rival LIV Golf from 2022-25.
Part of that has included stops at tournaments he has not typically played in to try and earn FedEx Cup points, such as playing the final Rocket Classic in Detroit, where he had never played before.

The upcoming season will be the third under current head coach Jedd Fisch, which resulted in positive results in his previous stops.

Zendaya and Tom Holland are making the most of married life as they travel the world promoting their latest projects, and a source exclusively tells In Touch that the newlyweds are turning the press tour into an extended honeymoon.
According to the source, the couple has been squeezing in romantic dinners and sightseeing between stops for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.
"They've been all over the world together the last month, and they still have more stops to go," the source says. "Everywhere they go, it's the absolute best of the best, it would cost them hundreds of thousands to do this sort of trip on their own dime."

SINGAPORE, July 24 (Reuters) - For months, Chinese chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) had been hiking prices on Huawei, one of the country's biggest technology companies. The chipmaker held firm when Huawei demanded relief from the escalating costs, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The standoff came to a head on CXMT's factory floor in June. A group of engineers from a chipmaking-equipment vendor with deep strategic ties to Huawei had been working in the cleanrooms at CXMT's core research and development zone in Hefei, Anhui province. Without warning, CXMT ordered the engineers, who had been helping with equipment maintenance, to pack their tools and leave the factory floor immediately, the two sources said.
Executives at the Huawei-connected equipment vendor, SiCarrier, concluded the confrontation was the result of the power struggle between CXMT and Huawei, the people told Reuters. The companies still do business but the engineers haven't been allowed back into the R&D zone, the two people said.
CXMT, Huawei and SiCarrier didn't respond to questions about the incident.
The clash illustrates the changing dynamics of China's semiconductor industry. CXMT has risen to become the world's fourth-biggest maker of memory, including the DRAM variety used in smartphones, laptops and servers. Now, the company is powerful enough to charge prices even Huawei can't stomach.

While many position groups have plenty of players returning from 2025, Miami's specialists are almost all completely new, as they let a kicker, punter and long snapper leave in free agency.
Before training camp starts, let's take a look at the four Dolphins that currently make up the specialist room.
Patterson played at Memphis from 2017-20 before going undrafted in 2021. Since then, he's had stops with eight different teams, making 87.4% of his field goals (90-of-103) and 96.6% of his extra points (143-of-148).

The New Orleans Saints saw one of their NFC South rivals significantly weakened on the defensive side on Thursday. Carolina Panthers edge rusher Nic Scourton suffered an ACL injury during practice with the team on Thursday and will miss the entire 2026 NFL season. This was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. The Athletic's Joseph Person observed Scourton being carted off during team drills at Panthers practice on Thursday. Trainers were focused on Scourton's right knee. Later in the day, it was determined that Scourton had suffered an ACL tear that will cost him his entire season.

He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 ****** ists, and 6.1 rebounds in the 2025-26 season and is set to enter year No. 24 in the league after being selected No. 1 overall back in 2003. The Sixers are certainly in the race along with former James stops, the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers for his services.
Former Sixers forward PJ Tucker gave his thoughts and prediction on where James goes while appearing on the "Club 520" podcast:
I got him going to Golden State. LeBron to Golden State is going to be tough.
While Tucker has his own prediction, it has been reported that the Warriors are pessimistic about their chances of landing James. It does appear that the frontrunners for his services are the Sixers, Cavs, and Heat as this comes down the stretch.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota coach Niko Medved has received a one-year contract extension with a slight raise after a promising first season at his alma mater.
The university board of regents approved the contract amendment at its regular monthly meeting, giving Medved a $100,000 pay **** p on top of the $100,000 annual increase in his initial six-year deal. Medved is now signed through the 2031-32 season and will make $3.2 million in 2026-27, which ranks 17th out of 18 head coaches in the Big Ten, according to university documents.
The Gophers went 15-18 overall and 8-12 in Big Ten play in Medved’s first year, with a lineup depleted by injuries. The former student manager and **** istant coach for the Gophers was hired last year after seven seasons at Colorado State. He’s entering his 14th year as a head coach, including stops at Drake and Furman.
