NEW YORK (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu scored nine of her 29 points in the final minute, Jonquel Jones made the tiebreaking free throw with 3.4 seconds left and the New York Liberty rallied to beat the Chicago Sky 95-94 on Wednesday night.
The Liberty erased a 12-point deficit in the final five minutes. Chicago Sky point guard Skylar Diggins confirmed on Monday, July 6, that she would be coming off the bench after starting all 19 games this season.
"I've been putting my body on the line all year for this team," Diggins told the media at a shootaround in Phoenix, where the Sky will play the Mercury on Tuesday. Kamilla Cardoso broke a WNBA record for the most field goals without a miss. Then, she shrugged it off.
"Just to stay consistent. I think my teammates (are) doing a great job just finding me and passing me the ball when I'm open," The Chicago Sky center said, casually smiling after going a perfect 13-for-13 from the floor against the Portland Fire.
Los Angeles Sparks forward Nnneka Ogwumike held the ****** le for most consecutive baskets (12-for-12) since 2016. Cardoso's new league record came en route to a 124-94 win and a career-high 30 points. The Sky center also had eight rebounds and a block.
"I think she was incredible," Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot said postgame.
"I think that it's been trending that for a while ... She's been playing awesome, and she has the capability to do that. And we're gonna ride this wave and keep expecting this from her. She was incredible tonight, and she should be celebrated."
