The Oregon Ducks were embarrassed on the road in a Week 2 loss to Oklahoma State. And, to add injury to insult, the Ducks were down a key weapon on offense and lost more important pieces as the game went on.
Tight end Jamari Johnson made the trip to Stillwater and warmed up with the team, and there was no reason to believe he wouldn't suit up and take the field. However, as the game kicked off, the ESPN broadcast reported that Johnson wouldn't play against the Cowboys.
After the upset loss, Dan Lanning clarified that Johnson suffered an injury against Boise State, which remains undisclosed, and he was unable to practice before the Oklahoma State game. On Monday, with a short week of practice ahead of a Friday night game against Portland State, Lanning gave an update on Johnson's status.
"Still evaluating it with Jamari," Lanning said. "We'll see what that looks like. I think I mentioned last week he might be down for a few (games), so we'll see if he's able to get back to where he's able to perform."
If Johnson is unable to play for a few weeks, Oregon will have to lean on its unproven options at tight end. Penn State transfer Andrew Olesh drew the start against Oklahoma State and made one catch. Freshman Kendre Harrison also played, while Clemson transfer Markus Dixon played one snap.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell met with local media Monday to open Alabama week after Michael Alford's firing as athletic director, discussing, among other things, three availability updates.
"First off, with the news of today, definitely wanted to start off just thanking Michael Alford and Laura, for all the work and the time that we get to spend together over these last few years," Norvell said. "Two of the best people I've had an opportunity to be around."
"Obviously, as we move forward into this week, all of our focus is going to be on this game," Norvell said. "It's a big game. It's our first road game of the season … an opportunity to go out there and be on an incredible stage against a very talented football team."
Norvell shared that freshman linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green will miss the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson will miss an extended period of time but is expected back this year.
"Those guys, they had the injuries, Daylen in the last game and then Izayia (has) been dealing with some things," Norvell said. "With some guys going down, the opportunity for others to rise up, whether it's defensively there at linebacker, whether it's opportunities there in special teams, it'll be an open-door opportunity for guys on this team."

The Iowa State men's basketball team's trip to the Phog in March 2027 is going to get an even bigger spotlight.
The Cyclones are slated to make one appearance on ESPN's "Big Monday" during the upcoming season, when they go on the road to Phog Allen Fieldhouse to face the Kansas Jayhawks on March 1, 2027. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT in Lawrence.
ESPN started its "Big Monday" showcase in 1987. This season, beginning Feb. 1, 2027, ESPN will highlight some of the top matchups in the ACC and Big 12 through the final Monday of the regular season. The Iowa State-Kansas game at Allen Fieldhouse will round out the "Big Monday" slate for the 2026-27 season.
Last season, the Cyclones and Jayhawks split the regular-season series. Kansas won the first meeting at Allen Fieldhouse, 84-63, on Jan. 13. The Cyclones comfortably evened the series with a 74-56 victory on Feb. 14 at Hilton Coliseum.
Kansas is coming off of a 24-11 season. It lost on a buzzer-beater in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to St. John's. The Jayhawks reloaded through the transfer portal and secured the No. 1 overall high school recruit. Freshman 6-foot-7 wing Tyran Stokes was the consensus top recruit for the 2026 class and he's already on the top of several 2027 NBA mock drafts.

ATLANTA − Tennessee football played its first road game of the season at Georgia Tech but it sure didn't look that way.
UT fans helped sell out Bobby Dodd Stadium as the No. 18 Vols (2-0) beat Georgia Tech 45-24 on Sept. 12. UT coach Josh Heupel noticed the support from the fans before he stepped on the field to play the Yellow Jackets (0-2).
"We leave our hotel and you see nothing but orange and white on our way here," Heupel said. "From older fans who have been here for a lot of generations to some younger ones who don't know how to tie their shoes yet, you walk into the stadium 60 minutes before kickoff and a majority of the crowd is Tennessee orange. It's pretty special."
Freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, making the first road start of his college career, said UT fans gave him and his teammates a distinct advantage when operating the offense.
"It was a lot of orange," Brandon said. "It definitely made things easier. Wasn't too much noise. Definitely got a little rowdy sometimes, but seeing all the orange, it definitely made me proud."

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Freshman Tait Reynolds replaced an injured Christopher Vizzina at quarterback and threw for 178 yards and led five scoring drives as Clemson defeated Georgia Southern 22-7 on Saturday night following a two-hour lightning delay.
T.J. Moore had seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown and Nolan Hauser was 5 for 5 on field goal attempts for Clemson (1-1), which rebounded from a 51-10 thrashing at the hands of No. 11 LSU last week.
That loss, combined with a seventh place finish in the ACC last year, left fans and former players frustrated with the Tigers' sharp falloff under longtime head coach Dabo Swinney. Clemson's win likely did little to inspire much confidence in new coordinator Chad Morris' offense.
The Tigers (1-1), who were outgained by nearly 500 yards by LSU, finished with 345 yards but were 2 of 13 on third down conversions and managed just one touchdown on five trips inside the red zone against the Sun Belt Conference foe.
Max Johnson, a North Carolina transfer, finished 27-of-47 passing for 244 yards and a touchdown for Georgia Southern (1-1).

Clemson did not find many answers offensively Saturday night, but the Tigers found enough to escape Memorial Stadium with their first victory of the season.
Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds was forced into action after Christopher Vizzina suffered a left arm injury, while kicker Nolan Hauser provided most of Clemson's scoring in a 22-7 victory over Georgia Southern.
Hauser tied his career high by connecting on five field goals, hitting from 20, 34, 38, 50 and 49 yards. He improved to 6-for-6 this season and matched the five field goals he made against Florida State in 2024.
Reynolds settled in after replacing Vizzina, completing 16 of 27 passes for 178 yards while adding 36 rushing yards. He was especially effective before halftime, going 12-for-17 for 160 yards.
One of his biggest plays came on third-and-20 late in the second quarter when he found Tyler Brown for 20 yards. Reynolds then scrambled 16 yards to help set up a Hauser field goal that sent Clemson into halftime leading 16-7.

ATLANTA — Josh Heupel and Faizon Brandon can rely on Tennessee's defense to carry it through some rough patches — at least to a certain point.
That was apparent in the way the 18th-ranked Vols beat Georgia Tech 45-24 amid a crowd with plenty of orange at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Sept. 12.
Heupel's offense didn't have to light up the scoreboard or stat sheet to win. And Brandon, the freshman quarterback, didn't have to reel off eye-popping highlights for the Vols (2-0) to protect a lead on the road over the Yellow Jackets (0-2).
They just needed to do enough and trust in Jim Knowles, the defensive wiz that Heupel hired as coordinator in the offseason. His squad carried the Vols through some critical lulls.
Knowles' defense scored a touchdown on Dejuan Lane's pick-6. It had another red-zone stop that yielded only a field goal. Jeremiah Telander's interception prevented points before halftime. And the Vols stopped Georgia Tech's rally on fourth down at the goal line early in the fourth quarter.

It's a good road test, especially for Brandon, who accounted for five touchdowns in 56-9 win over Furman at home. And defensive coordinator Jim Knowles will dig deeper into his scheme to stop the Yellow Jackets.
The Vols will get a boost from the return of All-SEC linebacker Arion Carter and starting center Sam Pendleton, who were suspended for the Furman game.
Carter was suspended by the NCAA because he accepted a $427 flight from his agent to an NFL pre-draft training facility, whice he repaid. Pendleton was suspended by Tennessee for violation of team rules because he was arrested in May on charges of driving under the influence.

ESPN College GameDay was very profitable for one University of Texas student. Each Week on the pregame show, former kicker Pat McAfee picks one student to take part in his Kicking is Easy field goal contest. This week, he picked Connor Kacena-Merrell from Zionsville, Indiana. And Matthew McConnaghey was on hand to help.
The Texas student from the Indianapolis-area complimented McAfee on his philanthropic efforts and said he enjoyed watching McAfee and new Pro Football Hall of Famer Adam Vinatieri at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Colts.
The freshman also said he would donate half his winnings to Building Tomorrow, an Indianapolis-based non-profit organization that works with communities in East Africa to give children access to quality education.

Penn State players have been named to award watch lists all summer long for being the best player at their position group or showing resiliency in returning from injury. But the latest Nittany Lion named to a watch list is being recognized for his work on and off the field.
Offensive lineman Cooper Cousins has been named to the Jason Witten Man of the Year award watch list, an honor that showcases a player who has displayed the best character and has shown commitment to community, family and teammates. Cousins isn't just one of the more promising offensive linemen in the nation — he's also one of the best people in the sport.
He's done nothing but great things in the community since coming to State College in 2024. Cousins struck up a friendship in his freshman year with a 10-year-old boy named Gannon Kupko Jr. who is dealing with a serious illness. He also spoke at the 2025 Game Day Gala, an event for children fighting difficult battles like Gannon, and the function raised more than $3 million.
Cousins is one of the most important players on the Nittany Lions, and he's also a pillar in the community. It will be a treat to watch him continue to work this season and make a lasting impact on the community.

CANNONSBURG Riley Maynard cornered the market on game-winners.
The ball hadn't seen the back of the net for nearly an hour of match time when the Boyd County freshman took care of any shootout concerns in the second overtime period against Ashland.
Maynard lined up her shot near the corner flag, connected with her left foot, and curved it inside the far post to lift the Lions to a 2-1 win in the 63rd District seeding contest Thursday.
Boyd County coach Olivia Pennington said it's not the first time Maynard found her target on the long-distance shot that offers no angle to the goal.
"It's something that she's done multiple times this season," Pennington said. "Any time we have that shot on the left side, Riley is attempting that shot."

CANNONSBURG After ninety minutes of intense, goalless soccer, Boyd County coach Levi Pennington still needed five guys for an energized ending.
Ashland and the Lions battled to nil-nil after two halves and two overtime periods. Each player on the pitch had done their part to empower their team, but work remained to determine a victor.
Bracken Peters sent the closing delivery inside the left post and supplied the final point in kicks from the mark for a 1-0 victory over the Tomcats in a 63rd District seeding match Thursday.
"(Thursday night), the (shootout) lineup changed based on how the game was going," Boyd County coach Levi Pennington said, "with body language and players. I felt like some of our guys were more gassed than normal. I pushed them a little further down the list and let their legs get back under them. I told them it's nothing against you, but it's next man up right now."
Ashland's freshman keeper, Karson Freeman, denied Boyd County's first attempt to help the Tomcats grab a quick advantage in the shootout. The visitors' second try clanged off the crossbar, and Zeke Withrow calmly blasted the next shot through to the twine to tie the session.

Deion Branch's advice to his group of Louisville wide receivers for this week is to keep the noise outside and stay off the internet.
Turn off the TV — not even SportsCenter — or any kind of media. No "rat poison," as Nick Saban would say.
"The spreads and what we're favored by, that stuff doesn't matter," Branch told the Cardinals, who are favored by 36.5 points against Villanova. "You still have to go out and play the game. We have to go out and execute our plays. I need my guys to perform at a very high level for the team and also for themselves. ... So that's my message to the guys. Don't pay any attention to it. Defensively, the Cards need to limit big plays and prevent completions up the seam. During a beach outing, then-5-year-old Terry Potter Hedden III — now "Trey" to NMSU teammates and fans — picked up a football and threw a perfect spiral to his stepmom. It was then Hedden was destined to be a quarterback with a supportive blended family. His parents and stepparents "made sure I made every tryout. They took me to camps. They helped me meet the coaches I wanted to learn from." And they attended every game, including during his two years at Furman and this season with the Aggies. After a 10-percentage-point jump in accuracy from his freshman season, Hedden entered the portal to "raise the ceiling a little bit" in pursuit of future pro opportunities. NMSU head coach Tony Sanchez's spread attack offered protection (312 pounds an O-lineman) and speedy targets. Slot receiver TK King has been GPS-clocked at nearly 23 mph and laser-timed at 20.74 seconds over 200 meters. "The biggest thing for me is I've got to remember that on game day, he's a little bit faster than he is in practice," Hedden said of King. "When he's running a route, you can throw it out there and he'll turn it on. We talk about it in the meeting room. Go make him run 100 meters to catch the ball." King's average target depth is 21 yards. He has catch-and-dashes of 46, 42 and 34 yards. The Aggies have sets of four and five receivers or up to two tight ends. Running back James Jones has no fumbles or negative-yard rushes in 30 carries. Jones also is an effective blocker who can roll into the flats. Hedden is 80% accurate on screens, hitches and check-down throws. "The quarterback in this offense is really a distributor," Hedden said. The Aggies' base is chaos, with shifts, movements and glove-to-glove combat in the trenches and running lanes. "When things get so cranky, like how many blitzes and stunts, it looks like Star Wars to us," weakside linebacker Sone Aupiu said. His first two NMSU seasons, Aupiu played middle linebacker. He moved to will linebacker last year but still trains at all second-tier positions, including jack, the stand-up edge defender. Helped by playing on the narrow side of the formation, Aupiu has freedom to jump lanes. "When it comes to gap schemes, that's what I love," he said. "Coming my way to the boundary, I'm looking to hit 'em." His father grew up in Samoa, his mother in New Zealand, where rugby was the favored sport. He said he aspires to play professional rugby. The FSU baseball program has landed its fourth player in the 2028 recruiting class, and it is yet another in-state prospect, with two-way player Garrett Harper committing on Thursday.
"Officially committed to Florida State University! 🍢 Thank you to my parents, family, friends, coaches, teammates, and Brad for believing in me and helping me get here." he wrote on social media. "Thank you to FSU for the opportunity to continue my academic & baseball journey. Time to work!"
Harper is a left-handed pitcher and outfielder from Cocoa Beach, Florida. He was originally a member of the 2029 recruiting class, but reclassified to join the 2028 class in April. He has a great frame at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds.
He had a strong freshman season at Cocoa Beach High School and is looking to take another step as a junior after skipping his sophomore season. He finished the season hitting .442 with nine doubles, one home run, 19 RBI, and 27 runs in 29 games. He recorded a .509 on-base percentage, walking 11 times and striking out twice.
He made 12 appearances on the mound, going 3-0 with a 2.07 ERA in 44 innings. He held opponents to a .179 batting average, allowing 26 runs (13 earned) on 28 hits and 30 walks, striking out 69 batters. He faced 190 batters and did not allow an extra-base hit.

UNM's men's and women's basketball teams will host a free-to-the-public Lobo Howl event in the Pit on Friday, Oct. 9.
The event has autograph signing opportunities, skills competitions and 3-point contests with both teams and the men's team also has a slam dunk contest, won last season by then true freshman and now returning sophomore point guard Uriah Tenette.
The 3-point contest last year was won by Kaia Foster, who is back for the women's Lobos roster, but has a broken left foot and will miss the beginning of the coming 2026-27 season. The Lobo men's player she beat in last year's final is also back: 2026 Mountain West Freshman of the Year Jake Hall.

Zemecha McManus took first for Pacelli, while Isaac Johnson was fourth and Kedi Oman took fifth. Pacelli was just one point behind first place Zumbrota-Mazeppa/Kenyon-Wanamingo.
Hayfield freshman Hadley Doman won the girls race with a time of 19:23.7 and Blooming Prairie senior Gloria Hernandez took second with a time of 20:09.7.

Toney's week one performance against Stanford on Saturday will never be forgotten, literally, because he set the Miami Hurricanes' single-game receiving record with 234 yards and a hat trick. Eddie Brown previously set the record in 1984 against Boston College with 220 receiving yards. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal was asked about Toney on the Pat McAfee Show and gave nothing but praise to his star-studded receiver: "He's put on 12–14 pounds of muscle man; he can accelerate and decelerate at a higher rate." Cristobal said. "He is stronger, he is faster, and then the time he puts in it's never changed, he always tries to push the envelope with that."
Cristobal's praise and the stats tell the story of the player Toney is, but three games could close the door on his competition.

Jermichael Finley called the moment "surreal" as he returned to Green Bay last weekend.
Thirteen years after his professional career ended at Lambeau Field following a devastating injury, the former Packers star tight end was back inside the stadium for the beginning of his son's college football career.
Kaydon Finley, Jermichael's oldest son, is a freshman at Notre Dame.
His Fighting Irish kicked off their 2026 season against the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Lambeau Field as part of the Shamrock Series, the first college football game at the Packers stadium in 10 years.
"Grateful and proud! What an incredible experience watching Kaydon's first Notre Dame game in Lambeau!" Jermichael wrote. "Being back in GB for this new chapter is beyond surreal! Blessed. And a win to end the night!"

Caleb Crowe rolled a perfect game during the Wolves' match against Fort Pierce Central on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from St. Lucie Lanes.
The freshman, who was voted as TCPalm's Boys Athlete of the Week for the Aug. 31-Sept. 5 playing period, became the first bowler to roll a 300 since Nathan Mondo accomplished the feat for the Cobras in 2024.

When Iowa landed Tony Diaz from University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, there was immediate hype and intrigue about what he could bring to this Iowa offense. There was the fact that he lead FCS freshman in receiving. There was the fact that he had a late Alabama offer in the portal. Mainly though, it was about just trying to inject some life in the Iowa passing game that has been missing for some time.
In his debut, Diaz was targeted 15 times and ended with seven catches for 84 yards and a touchdown – the most of any WR in their debut during the Ferentz era (for some context, DJK had zero catches in his 2007 debut and Mo Brown's 102-yard game in the 2002 Akron opener wasn't a debut — he had three catches across 2000-01 before it. RVZ is a close second with 5 catches for 65 yards and a freshman record 2 TDs in his debut back in 2024).
Also in those targets were two third down pass interference calls to keep drives alive. Oh, and don't forget about the other two likely touchdowns he would have scored on passes that were just off target.
This is now my 13th year of charting Iowa's passing game and through my data the most targets for an individual wide receiver during that time (Sam LaPorta, TE, was targeted 17 times vs Illinois in 2022). Iowa's Offensive Coordinator, Tim Lester, used ****** e and traffic to help free up Diaz giving him an opportunity to make a 1-on-1 catch or an opportunity to catch the ball in ****** e and use his quickness to create yards after the catch (55 of his 84 yards were YAC).
This is a look at the route trees for Diaz on his seven receptions and two defensive penalties. Diaz recorded 46 snaps on the day with 31 of those being lined up out wide and 15 lined up in the slot.
