Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army major who killed 13 people in a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, will be executed by firing squad, the Pentagon announced Monday.
"Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009," chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on X.
He added, "The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution. Judgement day for Hasan has finally come."
The U.S. military has not carried out an execution since 1961 and has not used a firing squad to execute a service member since World War II.
The announcement of Trump's approval came days after a failed attempt to execute Christa Pike by lethal injection. The failed execution prompted Tennessee's governor to halt further executions this year and order a third-party review.

Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army officer and psychiatrist who killed 13 people and injured 32 others during a mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009, will be executed by a U.S. Army firing squad, the Pentagon announced Monday.
"Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009," Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell announced. "He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack.
"The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution," he continued. "Judgement day for Hasan has finally come."
If Hasan's execution is indeed carried out by a firing squad, it would mark the first such case for the service since Jan. 31, 1945, when Pvt. Eddie D. Slovik was executed by a U.S. Army firing squad in France for desertion during World War II.
The last death sentence carried out by the U.S. military was in 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was executed by hanging at the gallows in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, after he was convicted of raping and attempting to kill a young girl.

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry condemned two men believed to be paparazzi, the former head of Met Police security for the royal family called their statement "nonsense."
Dai Davis, who once worked in royal protection, told The U.S. Sun in an article published Wednesday, September 30, that the Duke and ****** ss of Sussex's response is "bordering on shameless but ridiculous as well."
It was reported by People on Wednesday that two men carrying backpacks — who are believed to be photographers — were seen by the couple's private security and staff at the school where Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet attend.
Police reportedly ****** sed the situation, identifying one of the men as an international photographer working for a European press agency.
A spokesman for the Sussexes called it "extraordinarily reckless, concerning" and an "unacceptable" intrusion of privacy, per the publication.

It's been 84 years two months since Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and the couple managed to keep the wedding completely private. There are no leaked photos to speak of, and we still haven't seen pics of Tay's wedding dress—a Dior haute couture gown designed by Jonathan Anderson.
So, why hasn't Tay shared photos of her and Travis's big day yet—and when can fans expect them to drop?
The New York Times previously noted that a Dior spokesman said photos would be shared "after Swift herself posts the first pictures on her Instagram." Which obviously hasn't happened just yet! And now a source tells the Daily Mail that Taylor is simply doing things on her own terms.
While Taylor has been "very secretive" about her exact plans, she's waiting for buzz about the wedding to calm down a bit before sharing photos. But "when she eventually does, it's not going to be transactional. She's not going to suddenly release her wedding photos to sell an album or coincide with some big announcement."

A pastor kicked off a recent campaign stop for Michael Whatley, the Republican nominee for Senate, with a prayer that asked God to bestow "integrity and honesty" upon the event and to right wrongs "hammered down on the conservative movement."
The prayer was hardly unusual by North Carolina political standards. What was surprising was the man who delivered it. Pastor Daimon L. King is a registered ***** offender, twice sentenced to prison for convictions involving children, according to state and court records.
The episode occurred with two months to go in a marquee Senate race that could help decide which party controls the chamber after the November elections. It risks undermining one of Whatley's central campaign arguments — that his Democratic opponent, former Gov. Roy Cooper, is soft on crime. And it could feed into an advertising blitz by Democrats that has targeted the Republican candidate's ***** ociation with another convicted ***** offender, a former GOP official.
King did not respond to messages seeking comment.
Whatley's campaign declined to make him available for an interview. In a statement, campaign spokesman DJ Griffin said Whatley did not know King and the event "was NOT planned nor organized by the Whatley campaign nor did the campaign invite any of the guests."

Sep. 10—To preview Washington State's next game, a road test against Big 12 foe Kansas State, The Spokesman-Review conferred with K-State beat writer Ryan Gilbert, who covers the Wildcats for GoPowercat.
Here is our Q&A.
1. How did K-State's offensive line look against Nicholls, and do the injuries to John Pastore and George Fitzpatrick look to hamper the Cats as much as it might seem?
The offensive line checked all the boxes it could on Saturday. There were a lot of questions surrounding this group entering the season, but game No. 1 was a success. That being said, Nicholls is just not a good football team, so it's tough to get too excited over that performance in the trenches. K-State simply had the bigger, more physically dominant dudes at the point of contact. Anything other than a promising night would have been a concern for the offensive line.
George Fitzpatrick not being able to give it a go didn't help matters, but Collin Klein & Co. certainly couldn't have been caught off guard when they learned he had to be sidelined this season. His health condition from last offseason just lingered and lingered, so it's not like this just happened out of nowhere. There was ample time to create a backup plan. John Pastore, though, was supposed to be not just a starter but a true star at left tackle. His injury, which will sideline him for the season, happened about a month before the season, and then Tanner Morley also had to miss some time late in camp, so everything kind of just compounded at once.

British actor Tim Curry died of coronary artery disease, his spokesman has confirmed to the BBC.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show star died in his Los Angeles home on 25 August, aged 80.
In addition to the heart condition, Curry had a history of stroke and kidney cancer, which were significant conditions that contributed to his death, his spokesman said, citing a death certificate filed in Los Angeles County.
Stars of stage and screen paid tribute to the actor, who shot to fame as the lingerie-clad Dr Frank-N-Furter in the cult 1975 film The Rocky Horror Show.
After having a near-fatal stroke in 2012, the actor used a wheelchair. He shifted his focus to voice acting exclusively, expressing gratitude that the stroke resulted in paralysis rather than taking away his ability to speak.

Bill Simmons is under review by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission after he admitted on a podcast to proxy betting.
During one of The Ringer founder's recent podcasts, Simmons admitted that he had his daughter's boyfriend place bets for him in Massachusetts (where sports betting is legal) when he was off in California for work (where sports betting is illegal).
"The Commission is aware of the comments made on the Bill Simmons Podcast and staff are currently reviewing the matter," an MGC spokesman said in a Tuesday statement.
Simmons then addressed the hot water he's found himself in on a podcast as well, confirming that those bets placed via proxy had been voided and that he was unaware of the illegality.
"I talked about how I got my daughter's boyfriend to place some bets for me in Massachusetts because I was in L.A. … did not know about the proxy rules," Simmons said on Tuesday's episode. "Yeah, there are some real rules with this stuff, and they've ruled that not only are the bets going to be voided — and I learned my lesson."

Sept 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department has proposed requiring parents applying for passports for their children to provide proof of their own citizenship or immigration status as part of President Donald Trump's latest effort to limit ‌birthright citizenship.
The draft guidance, reviewed by Reuters, is the first detailed look at how the State Department could enforce Trump's August 6 ‌executive order targeting what it calls "birth tourism" and broadening historical exceptions to birthright citizenship.
The White House referred Reuters questions to the State Department. In a statement, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said that "President Trump has been unequivocal that this Administration will protect the meaning and value of American citizenship, full stop, and that includes making sure our passport adjudication process fully reflects that standard."
Limiting birthright citizenship has been one of the president's top priorities in his far-reaching crackdown on immigration. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled his previous attempt violated the country's Constitution.

Aug. 31—PULLMAN — Ahead of the first season-opening Apple Cup, set for Sunday afternoon in Seattle, Washington State is electing not to release a depth chart.
Cougar coach Kirby Moore indicated as much on Monday, saying that heading into the games to follow the rest of the season, the team expects to post two-deeps.
So in the meantime, The Spokesman-Review is publishing a projection of WSU's two-deep, which is based on observations from the team's 15 fall camp practices and interviews with coaches and players this August. The program has only confirmed one player as a starter, quarterback Caden Pinnick.
First, a couple housekeeping notes...
—The only players expected to be sidelined by injuries for Sunday's game are tight ends Trey Leckner and Hudson Cedarland, Moore said. Leckner is set to miss the first half of the season, while Cedarland will be out "an extended period of time," according to Moore.

When news broke Saturday afternoon that Joe Palmquist — a former longtime sports editor and managing editor at the S-R — had lost his battle to a severe lung disease possibly related to a bone marrow transplant nearly a year ago, tributes and photos flowed back and forth on a group chat that included more than two dozen colleagues.
Joe would have turned 67 in September.

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe spoke with Russian intelligence officials during a visit to Moscow but did not meet President Vladimir Putin, ‌the Kremlin said on Wednesday of a trip that U.S. President Donald Trump described ‌as "semi-routine."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Putin had been briefed on the outcome of Tuesday's visit, which came as the war in Ukraine drags on and as efforts to reach a lasting peace between the United States and Iran have stalled.
Peskov declined to say what had been discussed or to provide any further details.
"All I can tell you is that there have been contacts via the ‌security services. I can tell you that there have been no meetings with the Russian president. Naturally, President Putin is kept informed of everything without delay," said Peskov.
Trump, in a radio interview on Wednesday, did not say specifically why Ratcliffe had travelled to Moscow but said it could prove useful.

Two Texas Christian University football players got into a fight in the team's locker room on Aug. 13, leading to one player being kicked off the team. Now, as more details come to light, the university is cracking down on the exposure that made the fight's details public in the first place.
TCU Athletics has decided to rescind the credentials of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and beat reporter Steven Johnson after the newspaper published details of the locker room fight between safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma. According to the Star-Telegram, a spokesman for the program stated that Johnson's credentials were yanked after Ezukanma received threats over the incident.
Of note, Ezukanma self-reported the incident online, identifying himself as the victim in a now-deleted video on social media.
"Our primary focus is the health and well-being of our student-athlete," TCU athletic director Mike Buddie said in a statement on Tuesday. "Unfortunately, an unnamed source without first-hand knowledge of the incident provided inaccurate information cited in initial reporting by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which we strongly disputed."
"The inclusion of the misinformation advanced a narrative that endangered a student-athlete and resulted in threats to him and his family. These actions led to the decision to withhold the media credential until additional conversation can be held between athletics and the sports reporting team. We remain dedicated to restoring our student to health as well as focusing on the game that's ahead."

MOSCOW, Aug 25 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Tuesday that ‌remarks by Finnish President Alexander ‌Stubb approving of Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory showed that he, along with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, belonged to the "party of war."
Stubb has ‌backed Ukraine's long-range strikes deep inside Russia, saying that such attacks, including on civilian logistics centres, increase the cost of Moscow's war effort and could help bring it to ‌the negotiating table.
Asked about Stubb's comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said they had come as a surprise and showed that the Finnish leader, ‌like Britain's Burnham, wanted the war in Ukraine to continue.
Peskov also accused ‌Stubb and other Western leaders of misleading their own voters by claiming that it was possible for Russia ‌to be strategically defeated.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is preparing to revoke the business and tourism visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum status in the United States. If it happens, the move would be the largest single mass revocation of visas in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.
Unless challenged or revised, the State Department is expected to announce in the coming weeks the revocation of so-called B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 whose holders have sought asylum or are now seeking asylum, according to State Department documents obtained by The ******* ociated Press and two U.S. officials. The action will be taken in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security.
"We are coordinating with DHS to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the United States claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently," said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
He declined to comment on the number of visas that might be revoked, saying "as the process will be ongoing, the number of revocations remains dynamic and will be done on a rolling basis."
The revocations would not necessarily result in their immediate deportation, the officials said. Most of those with asylum cases currently pending would be recategorized but would lose their status as business or tourism travelers, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the revocations are not final yet.

MOSCOW, Aug 24 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Monday that measures were being taken ‌to minimise the impact of Ukrainian strikes ‌on Russia's grain exports as global wheat importers brace for tighter supplies amid attacks on Black Sea grain infrastructure.
Tit-for-tat attacks by Russia and Ukraine, both major grain exporters, on ports and vessels in recent weeks ‌have shuttered grain terminals and forced shippers to delay or cancel loadings for dozens of cargoes during the peak export season.
"Measures have been identified and will be further developed, ensuring that all grain intended for export is shipped on time and in ‌full," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
President Vladimir Putin acknowledged last week that Russia was experiencing problems with its agricultural exports, but said it would resolve them. The Kremlin chief also pledged ‌that there would be no shortages on global markets.
Russia would have about 60 million tons of grain for ‌export in the current season, Putin estimated. Russian grain exports are expected to pick up to 2.2 million metric tons in August from 1.95 million ‌in July, the Sovecon consultancy said.

The NFL is reviewing Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman under its Personal Conduct Policy after Georgia court records revealed that he was arrested in June on family violence and property-damage charges.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, police accused Bateman of damaging a Mercedes-Benz occupied by the mother of his child and their 3-month-old daughter during a June 3 incident in Monroe, Georgia. An arrest warrant alleged that shattered glass caused small cuts to the woman's face.
Bateman, 26, faces misdemeanor charges of family violence battery and reckless conduct, along with a felony count of first-degree criminal damage to property. His attorney, Jordan Siev, said the family situation had been "taken completely out of context for sensational reasons" and urged the public to allow the court process to play out.
The Ravens said they had been communicating directly with Bateman, notified the league and were cooperating with its review. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy subsequently told ESPN that the matter is "under review of the personal conduct policy."
Police were called at about 6 a.m. on June 3 after an earlier dispute between Bateman and the mother of his child at a shared residence in Monroe, according to court records cited by ESPN. Officers said the woman had multiple facial contusions that she attributed to that earlier confrontation.

Aug. 21—Gonzaga hasn't released its final nonconference schedule, but anyone willing to do some digging can probably discover a few of the missing pieces.
For example, a quick internet search of Montana State's schedule would've led someone to the third known home game of Gonzaga's 2026-27 nonleague slate.
According to Montana State's athletics website, the Bobcats are scheduled to visit Gonzaga on Nov. 17, one week before Mark Few's program takes on the 16-team Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
A tipoff time and television broadcast details will be announced at a later date.
SB Nation's Gonzaga website, Slipper Still Fits, identified the matchup with Montana State hours after The Spokesman-Review discovered another home game against NAIA Eastern Oregon, thanks to an updated schedule on the Mountaineers' site.

The White House has branded comedian Rosie O'Donnell a "total slob" after she joked on late night television that Natalie Harp, Donald Trump's devoted executive ***** istant, tucks the president into bed at night.
O'Donnell's quip, made Wednesday night during her stint as a guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, comes as Trump's 35-year-old aide has been at the center of intense media and public scrutiny over her unusually close relationship with and proximity to the president. The comedian opened the episode wishing viewers "a special ***** o to those of you watching from home and from the White House."
"But I do have some bad news for President Petty Roosevelt," she continued. "That's all I'm going to say about you tonight, sweetheart. You got to realize it's time to hang up your wig and let Natalie tuck you in," O'Donnell said, drawing audible gasps from the audience.
In response, the White House unleashed an insult-laden statement on O'Donnell, who has been feuding with Trump for 20 years.
"Rosie O'Donnell is a nasty woman and a total slob whose brain has been completely destroyed by Trump Derangement Syndrome," White House spokesman Davis Ingle told PEOPLE.

While the NFL won't keep broadcasters from having direct relationships with teams (it should), restrictions will apply to anyone who chooses to own or work for one of the 32 franchises.
After initially saying that Troy Aikman's role with the Dolphins will be addressed at the appropriate time, the fact that the season is approaching has made the time appropriate. And, like Fox ******* yst/Raiders owner Tom Brady, ESPN ******* yst/Dolphins employee Troy Aikman will have restrictions regarding his TV job.
"The same parameters that pertained to Tom last season will continue this year and also will apply to Troy," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told Mark Maske of Front Office Sports.
So what are the parameters that will apply to Brady and Aikman?
"Both may attend production meetings virtually but will have no access to practice facilities or practices," McCarthy said. "They may conduct interviews outside team facilities with football personnel and players. They could conduct the interview at the team hotel in an area separate from other football personnel. They could broadcast games involving their own club."

Their top rookie wasn't practicing again.
Their Super Bowl-champion threw an interception, which in his sterling training camp is semi-news.
Nick Emmanwori did the smallest bit of stretching with his teammates before he watched them practice again. Fellow safety D'Anthony Bell and their coaches joked with Emmanwori and slapped him warmly on his back. It was the next, incremental step in the dynamic safety/linebacker's return to Mike Macdonald's top-ranked defense from arthroscopic ankle surgery last month. Emmanwori remains what the team has thought all along: on track to play in the opener in four weeks.
And a player who had his worst football day in this event almost a year to the day showed he is all the way back.
The Seahawks' annual fan-fest, training-camp practice at Lumen Field Saturday evening was the second straight practice rookie first-round draft choice Jadarian Price missed. He was in team sweats walking out as the champs took the field to the crowd's cheers to begin drills. A team spokesman said the running back has "lower-body soreness," per a team spokesman.

BEREA ― The media was told by coach Todd Monken at 12:50 p.m. that Shdeur Sanders was going to be getting the No. 1 quarterback reps in practice. The practice started 40 minutes later, and by 2 p.m. it was clear the No. 1 reps were all going to belong to Deshaun Watson.
So, what exactly happened? It's believed that the former was going to be the plan, until the Browns completed walk-through around noon and something changed.
A team spokesman's statement simply said that "there were personnel grouping (Monken) wanted to see Deshaun with." That's the only official statement from the Browns on the subject. at least until Monken speaks before the next training camp practice on Aug. 10.
Subscribe to Browns Insider newsletter
All of which leads to another thing Monken talked about before practice, which is the preseason opener next Saturday. Specifically, the fact the next practice will be the one where there's a moere obvious delination between those who have a chance to play with the No. 1s and who is likely to be further down the depth charft.

After a hard-fought bidding war, NBC Sports is retaining media rights to the Preakness Stakes, Front Office Sports has learned.
NBC had been defending its rights to the second leg of racing's Triple Crown against bidders such as Fox Sports, Netflix, and Amazon, say sources. It's unclear how long the network's new deal is for.
Dan Illman, a spokesman for the Maryland Jockey Club, declined to comment. But sources say Maryland Governor Wes Moore and other dignitaries are planning a press conference for 12 p.m. ET in Annapolis on Wednesday, where it will be announced that NBC will continue to carry the race.
The Preakness drew its biggest audience since 2021 this past May, averaging 5.5 million viewers across NBC and Peacock. That was up 22% from 4.9 million in 2025.
NBC has held Preakness rights since 2001. The network also boasts rights to the Kentucky Derby through 2032. Fox holds the rights to the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown.
