Sep. 10—The opening week of the season was rough for the upper divisions of the Greater Spokane League as the 4A and 3A teams went a combined 3-7 in Week 1. Both No. 1 seeds to the postseason in 2025 — Gonzaga Prep and Cheney — suffered multiple-touchdown losses, and Week 2 won't get any easier for them.
But that's the beauty/danger of the league opening up its schedule to nonleague games early in the season. It allows teams with postseason aspirations to play tougher opponents to bulk up their schedules — but it also means the risk of psyche-busting early-season losses.
In the grand scheme of things, nothing that happened last Friday has any impact on which teams might reach the postseason. But no one wants to start the season 0-2, either.

It was not so long ago that Coco Gauff was the teenage sensation looking to cause an upset at the US Open.
Now, at the grand old age of 22, she is the Grand Slam champion and leading WTA Tour star who drew on her experience to deal with talented 18-year-old Iva Jovic at Flushing Meadows.
Fourth seed Gauff found her finest level of the fortnight to beat fellow American Jovic in a 6-1 6-4 win which secured her place in the quarter-finals.
Gauff's comfortable progress ensured the top six seeds have reached the US Open women's last eight for the first time since 1998, further illustrating the strength in depth at the top of the WTA Tour.
Gauff, who won the 2023 **** le in New York, continues her quest for a third major **** le against French Open champion Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday.

The women's No. 1 seed faced a battle from the unseeded American, but eventually won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday and will face the winner between No. 6 Linda Nosková and No. 11 Marta Kostyuk next.
Townsend, who advanced to the fourth round by getting past No. 15 Diana Shnaider on Friday, wasn't overwhelmed by Sabalenka's serve as many of her opponents often are and broke twice early on in the first set. But she hurt herself by hitting several returns wide or long.

While Navarro and fellow new striker signing Damion Downs made their debuts off the bench, it was Simon Becher — scoring against his former team — Tomas Totland and Conrad Wallem who netted the goals that extended St. Louis's MLS-best unbeaten streak to 13 games.
With the win, CITY pushed into fifth in the West, level on points with FC Dallas for the coveted top-four spot among the Audi MLS Cup Playoff seeds. At the same time, it put their opponents on notice for trophy aspirations for the rest of the year.

Sep. 3—Section 1, Class 2A football turned into a slugfest in 2025. It was as wide-open and competitive of a section as there was in the state.
Five of the seven teams in the section finished the regular season at or better than .500, and the top two seeds were defeated on their home fields in the section semifinals. The No. 3 seed won the section championship, which should actually be no surprise considering it was ...
It was rinse and repeat in 2025 for the Warriors, who finished 9-3 overall and won their 15th section championship in 20 years.

On August 4, Archer-Daniels-Midland (NYSE:ADM) executives told investors on an earnings call that the company would expand capacity at four US oilseed-crushing plants, a roughly $100 million push into a business that just posted its strongest quarter in years. The plants sit in Frankfort, Indiana; Deerfield, Missouri; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Spiritwood, North Dakota, the last a joint venture with Marathon Petroleum. Together, the upgrades are expected to add about 700,000 metric tons of crush capacity by 2028 or 2029, and six more sites have already been flagged for possible future growth.
CEO Juan Luciano framed the projects as a cheap way to add output, estimating the cost at roughly a quarter of what a brand-new facility would require. That math matters because ADM just reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.84, well above the $1.44 ***** ysts expected, and raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $5.15 to $5.60 from a prior $4.15 to $4.70. Operating profit in the ag services and oilseeds segment, ADM's largest, jumped 129% year over year to $867 million, with the crushing subsegment alone up $330 million as oilseed volumes climbed about 5%.
The company has now identified 10 US soy processing plants for potential expansion in total, and Luciano said top buyer China appears on track to meet its commitment to purchase 25 million metric tons of US soybeans this year. Nutrition, long a laggard, also grew 51% to $172 million on strength in flavors. Even so, Luciano described the crushing expansion as a "phased approach to allow for offramps," language that suggests management wants room to pull back if the current environment does not hold. The projects are expected to fit inside ADM's existing 2026 capital expenditure range of $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion, following expansions at two Brazilian plants last year and an extension completed this year in Uberlandia.
The strength behind these numbers leans heavily on conditions ADM does not control. Finalized 2026 and 2027 renewable volume obligations under the US Renewable Fuel Standard, locked in only this past March, are doing much of the work behind crushing margins, alongside energy prices that climbed after the Iran war. Roughly $100 million of the ag services and oilseeds profit came from net positive mark-to-market and timing impacts, gains tied to commodity pricing swings rather than the underlying business.
Not every part of the portfolio moved in the same direction. The refined products and other subsegment posted a 3% profit decline on negative mark-to-market impacts and supply and demand imbalances in South America, and equity earnings from ADM's stake in Wilmar fell 22%. Those soft spots, paired with a crush expansion built with explicit offramps, hint that management sees more uncertainty in the setup than the headline guidance raise suggests.

SpaceX originally operated two main businesses: its Starlink satellite internet services and its rocket launch services. But in Feb. 2026, it acquired xAI -- which owns Grok, X, and its other AI **** ets -- in an all-stock transaction to form its new AI business. It also acquired the AI start-up Cursor earlier this month. Elon Musk believes its AI revenue will jump from $3.5 billion in 2025 to $700-$750 billion in 2030.
To sow the seeds for that expansion, **** eX spent most of its second-quarter capex on Nvidia's (NASDAQ: NVDA) data center GPUs and other AI accelerators. The rest was used to deploy, acquire, and build more high-power data centers to increase its active capacity from 1.4 GW today to its target of 10 GW by next year.

For the last five years, I have cleared my schedule for every A'ja Wilson versus Breanna Stewart matchup — and there have been many. They are the two defining players of this WNBA generation, with a combined six MVPs and six **** les between them, and the faces of USA Basketball. They relish the competition of playing against the best at their position and raise their levels when they meet.
The Wilson-Stewart era is far from over. Wilson is on pace to be MVP yet again, while Stewart is putting together yet another All-WNBA season. Although the Las Vegas Aces sit higher in the standings, the New York Liberty have mostly gotten the best of them this season, including in the Commissioner's Cup final. A playoff series between them (a fifth matchup in seven seasons) would be high-level theater.
It would be near-impossible for another individual rivalry to reach those heights — again, look at all the hardware the two have in their trophy cases — but it was fun to get a look at the future during the aptly-named rivals week. Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark have a lot more winning to do to reach the Wilson-Stewart level, but they do have the right ingredients in place. They're elite players at essentially the same position who came up together through USA Basketball; like Stewart and Wilson, they each were the MVP at a U-19 World Cup. They both had outstanding college careers, and now they are trying to compete for **** les in the WNBA.
Bueckers and Clark have met only three times in the pros, and the first was mostly forgettable. The last two, however, have been worth the wait. The third quarter of Friday's game between Dallas and Indiana was a true highlight, as these two unselfish guards kept trying to one-up the other as bucket-getters. Six of their baskets were immediately followed by points from the other, including a very fun stretch in which Clark hit a layup, Bueckers followed with a pull-up 3, Clark responded with a pull-up jumper and Bueckers hit another shot in the midrange. Not a lot of passing from the nominal point guards, but the budding seeds of a longer rivalry.
Ideally, the Wings and Fever will meet in the playoffs (with Azzi Fudd and Jessica Shepard both healthy by that point) and give this matchup the stakes it deserves. For now, it's an enjoyable undercard to the Wilson-Stewart rivalry.

The popular Dimitrov was unable to hold onto a 4-1 lead in the third set against Argentine Sebastian Baez, exiting in the first round 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 as he lost the last five games of the encounter.
The 35-year-old Dimitrov, his ranking down to 138 and playing on a wild card, was bidding for his first Cincinnati victory in five years.
Baez goes on to next play American Learner Tien, a semi-finalist this week in Montreal.

BNSF Railway reported higher second-quarter, pre-tax earnings thanks to a combination of volume growth and higher revenue per load, parent company Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) reported on Saturday.
BNSF's pre-tax earnings rose 13.9%, to $2.06 billion, as revenue increased 14.6%, to $6.56 billion. The railway's operating expenses increased 15.6% compared to a year ago, as fuel costs surged 68%. BNSF's operating ratio was 65.4%, an 0.6-point increase.
Quarterly volume rose 6.5%, while average revenue per unit increased 7.6%, primarily from higher fuel surcharge revenue.
Consumer products volume, which includes intermodal and automotive traffic, grew 9.3%. Berkshire said the volume growth was due to "higher intermodal shipments resulting from higher West Coast imports, market share gains, and tightening truck capacity."
Agricultural and energy products traffic was up 11.5% for the quarter. "The volume increases were primarily due to higher grain exports, petroleum fuels and oilseeds and meals," Berkshire reported.

The Italian football season officially kicks off tonight with two fixtures in the preliminary round of the Coppa Italia.
It is still a little while until Serie A and B begin, but this evening there will be the first two competitive matches of the 2026-27 season in Italy.
They are the preliminary round of the Coppa Italia, to see who enters the tournament proper.
The path is already set out, as the Coppa Italia is drawn like a tennis competition with seeds and ranking.

The ATP Montreal Masters lost its top two seeds in the **** e of a few hours on Wednesday as Germany's Alexander Zverev and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime both exited the field.
Top seed and world number three Zverev, this year's French Open champion and Wimbledon runner-up, was toppled by Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who rallied for a 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 6-4 second-round upset.
"I didn't expect to play well," Zverev said. "I also didn't expect to play this bad, to be honest."
Montreal native Auger-Aliassime had to withdraw before his scheduled night match after injuring his back during training on Monday.
"It was quite sudden. I was training here for two weeks and I had zero problems," Auger-Aliassime said. "Just the timing is tough.

Vigo County college soccer rivalries enter new turf, literally, this season.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's team makes its McMahon Field debut at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, against Rose-Hulman at 5 p.m. The match will be the first of six regular-season home contests at the Pomeroys' new home facility, which was dedicated on July 16.
On Wednesday, SMWC announced its 2026 schedule, which also includes an exhibition match against another cross-county opponent — NCAA Division I Indiana State on Aug. 19 at ISU's Memorial Stadium.
The Woods' schedule includes 18 regular-season contests and eight River States Conference matches. Head coach Ronald Kiernicki enters his fifth season at the helm of the Pomeroys.
As for the women's postseason, the opening round of the River States Conference Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4. Teams finishing third through sixth in the conference standings will compete in the opening round, with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds serving as hosts. Tournament semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 7 at the sites of the top two seeds, followed by the championship match Nov. 11 at the home of the highest remaining seed.
