TOPEKA (KSNT) — Last season, Washburn volleyball earned a share of the MIAA regular season **** le and made it to the NCAA Central Regional semifinals. This season, the Ichabods expect nothing less.
"I can confidently say that we're hungry for more as a good team is, and we're trying to find that line between good and great," Washburn senior Libero Taylor Rottinghaus told 27 Sports. "We want that so bad that we've made it a goal to own it, and we want to do that so bad that we're going to put the work in on the court with practice, with the games, all of it."
In 2025, Washburn finished 27-5 and 13-3 in MIAA play. Heading into this season, the squad looks a little different after losing key All-American playmakers.
"You know, any time that you remove pieces and add pieces, you've changed the makeup of the team, and so every single year is just a little bit different," Washburn head coach Chris Herron said. "And so we're starting to see, you know, which direction we're going in and what the makeup of the team is going to be like."
One of the key leaders on this year's squad, who has been for the last couple of seasons, is Shawnee Heights' own Taylor Rottinghaus. Last season, the libero led the team with 468 digs.

Amy Winehouse's father has been hit with a nearly £1 million bill after losing a bitter court battle against two of his late daughter's closest friends. Mitch Winehouse was ordered to make interim payments totaling £963,851—about $1.3 million—to Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay after a High Court judge tore into the case he brought over the sale of the singer's belongings.
According to the BBC, the dispute centered on 141 items auctioned in the United States between 2021 and 2023, including Winehouse's clothes, handbags, earrings, makeup, ballet slippers and a dress she wore on her final tour in 2011. Mitch claimed Parry, Amy's former stylist, and Gourlay had no right to sell the items and accused them of "deliberately" hiding the sales from him. The women denied wrongdoing, saying the items either belonged to them or had been given to them by Winehouse.

The court wasn't buying Mitch's version. Judge Sarah Clarke KC tossed his case earlier this year, finding that he "knew all along" that the women planned to sell the memorabilia.
The trial had heard allegations that Parry and Gourlay took advantage of Mitch's forgetfulness and pocketed more than $1.4 million from the auctions, but Clarke rejected the claim that they had deliberately concealed the sales.

Brad Pitt considers himself an "optimist," but at one point in his life, the actor contemplated taking his life.
The two-time Academy Award winner expounded on his past grief in a new Esquire cover story, published Monday (August 10). Although Pitt didn't name where his period of depression stemmed from, the actor has been in a lengthy legal battle with his ex-wife, actress Angelina Jolie in the years since their 2019 divorce after five years of marriage.
While their children, both biological and adopted, have petitioned to drop 'Pitt' as their surname, Pitt has filed to obtain records of Jolie's income between 2017 to 2021. The conflict regards the sale of Jolie's stake in their French winery company Château Miraval, which the ex-spouses co-owned from 2008 to 2021. Since 2022, Pitt, 62, has been in a relationship with jewelry entrepreneur Ines de Ramon, 33.
Pitt told Esquire that he was "never suicidal in any way" and that thoughts about taking his life were not in his "makeup."

Aug 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. agency that enforces laws banning workplace discrimination has dropped a lawsuit seeking to enforce a subpoena in an investigation of Nike's treatment of white employees, saying the company has handed over a trove of information.
U.S. District Judge Cristian Stevens in St. Louis, Missouri, granted the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's motion on Thursday to dismiss the lawsuit it filed in February, after the agency in a filing late Wednesday said Nike had complied with its subpoena.
The commission had claimed the footwear and apparel company refused to comply with demands for information such as data on the racial and ethnic makeup of the company's workforce and a roster of employees chosen for mentoring and development programs.
The EEOC said it was investigating whether Nike intentionally discriminated against white employees and job applicants, including by disproportionately targeting them for layoffs, and that it needed the information to determine whether Nike violated the law.

Every era has its beauty standards, each carrying through to the next generations as either kitsch or cool. The '80s have received their fair share of condemnation and celebration as either or, but there's a unique glamour that '80s soap opera divas, such as Morgan Fairchild, have translated to the decades since.
Although the Texas native got her start on television back in the '70s with hit series such as "Search for Tomorrow," "Happy Days," and "Mork & Mindy," the '80s brought about a fresh new decade of big opportunities (and even bigger hair). Alongside films such as "The Seduction" and "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," Fairchild also continued her career on TV with series like "Flamingo Road" and "Paper Dolls." However, some of her most iconic roles come from her nearly 30-year run on "General Hospital," as well as her stint as Chandler Bing's mom in "Friends." Still acting into her 70s, Fairchild also started her own podcast, "2 B****es From Texas," alongside sister Cathryn Hartt. You can still see traces of her signature '80s glam in her makeup, outfits, and hair today, having refined her taste and tweaked it to the times.
However, while Fairchild was undoubtedly one of the most fashionable actresses of the '80s, there were some looks that were a clear trial and error. Fashion taste fluctuates as our lives do, and as the "Shattered Illusions" star can attest through her own tragedies in life, not every moment can be a hit. Although incredibly rare, here are a few fashion flops from her heyday.

"Landman" star Ali Larter's storybook romance proves that when you know, you know – but she also knows when it's time to call it quits with the heavy makeup. Larter filmed the Paramount+ series in Fort Worth, Texas, meaning long hours in high heat and humidity, where the last thing on anyone's mind is perfecting a full beat. While makeup artists relied on heavy powders to keep the actors' makeup set under the harsh lighting, the star admitted she would push back against her makeup artist in favor of a glowier look. "I don't like powder, so it's usually my makeup artist fighting to put powder on me, and I'm saying no—I just would prefer to look shiny," she told NewBeauty in July 2026.
Larter's preference for a more lived-in complexion also aligns with the growing trend of choosing a glowy, skin-like perfection over an overly matte complexion – a beauty trend celebrity makeup artists call outdated in 2026. In lieu of consistent touch-ups, the actor's team opted for blotting papers to reduce some of the oils that accumulate throughout filming. "For longer days, if I am really sweaty — usually we're sweaty because it's Texas — they do a lot of blotting papers," she explained to the outlet. The simple swap kept excess oil at bay without sacrificing the fresh complexion and comfort she preferred.

Part of Ali Larter's complete transformation came from her commitment to skincare. During the demanding production schedule for "Landman," the actor used her lunch break to refresh her skin and her mindset before going back to filming. During the cast's 30-minute lunch break, she would remove her under-eye makeup to apply eye masks and meditate for 20 minutes before stepping back in front of the camera.

The singer has spent years fielding comments about her body, ******* uality and appearance. This time, she decided to give critics a taste of their own medicine.
Chloe Bailey has apparently decided that taking the high road is optional.
The 28-year-old singer and actress recently revealed how she responded after a cheerful TikTok from Saint Lucia drew nasty comments about her makeup-free appearance. Instead of ignoring the people calling her "ugly," Bailey said she clicked on their profiles, took a closer look at their photos and returned the criticism.
Her strategy, as she described it, was simple: "bully back."
Bailey said some of the commenters ultimately deleted their remarks after she responded, turning what could have been another round of online scrutiny into something she found considerably more satisfying.

Sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers and watching Pete-Crow Armstrong outduel Shohei Ohtani in their MVP showdown seemed like the perfect way to end an exhilarating homestand for the Chicago Cubs.
But the Cubs instead were forced to return to Wrigley Field on Thursday for a makeup game against the Toronto Blue Jays, and for most of the afternoon the electricity of the last week seemed missing with the New York Yankees and Dodgers — and all their stars — gone.
The Cubs were clueless against Blue Jays ace Dylan Cease, who allowed two hits in seven shutout innings, and a loss to the underachieving Jays would've felt like adding an extra chapter to "The Great Gatsby."
But then everything changed on a dime, and a manic Cubs season went off the rails again.

Modern medicines and treatments have led to a growing demand for advanced patient diagnostics. To tailor medicines for patients in prenatal care or with cancer, you need to understand more about their bodies and specific genetic makeup.
Natera specializes in bridging the gap between doctors and patients, using innovative cell-free DNA testing to help diagnose outcomes. Specifically, it serves the prenatal and cancer testing markets. For pregnant patients, a doctor can use a Natera test to diagnose any problems with the fetus, all with minimal physical intervention. Its cancer testing has a variety of use cases, but an important one is checking for residual disease evidence in patients, which can be invaluable for someone dealing with cancer in remission.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's daughter, Violet Affleck, showed off her summer sartorial agenda as she was photographed grabbing coffee with a friend at Caffe Luxxe in Brentwood.
The 20-year-old looked effortlessly stylish in a white baby tee emblazoned with a playful red apple print, paired with a pair of Baywatch-inspired red Nike shorts. Violet accessorized with a vibrant striped handbag and a pair of oversized sunglasses. Her hair was left down in a bob while she opted for minimal makeup with a radiant complexion.
Violet is enjoying her summer in Los Angeles before she returns to Yale University for her junior year. It was a rare sighting to see Violet pictured without her face mask. Back in September 2025, Violet delivered an emotional speech at the United Nations advocating for clean air and the use of masks to help prevent the spread of long COVID-19. Violet has long been an advocate for public health and addressed the UN while wearing a K95 mask. "We are told by leaders across the board that we are the future," she said. "But when it comes to the ongoing pandemic, our present is being stolen right in front of our eyes."

Violet called out adults for "the relentless beat of back to normal, ignoring downplaying, and concealing both the prevalence of airborne transmission and the threat of long COVID."

Tate McRae kept the fashion moments coming long after stepping off the Lollapalooza stage, donning a lace slip micro minidress from Doen. After turning heads in multiple Ludovic de Saint Sernin looks during her performance, the pop star switched gears for an after-hours celebration, slipping into a delicate minidress by Doen while hanging out backstage with The Chainsmokers.
Tate McRae wore the Doen Evra Slip Dress in Sea Salt, a barely-there lace number that perfectly balanced sweet and sultry. It featured thin spaghetti straps, a soft scoop neckline trimmed with scalloped lace, and an all-over floral lace construction.
The piece had a romantic, lingerie-inspired feel. Its body-hugging silhouette skimmed her figure before ending at an ultra-short hemline that rode high on her thighs, making the tiny slip dress feel even more daring.
McRae paired the ivory mini with diamond stud earrings and a minimalistic bracelet, letting the intricate lace remain the focus. She wore her blonde hair in loose, tousled waves and opted for glowing makeup with bronzed skin and glossy lips. Additionally, a black shoulder bag with silver hardware added contrast to the monochrome outfit.
Photos from backstage captured the "Sports Car" singer smiling alongside Alex Pall and Drew Taggart of The Chainsmokers after her Lollapalooza set. In another playful snap, McRae was seen holding up a giant bottle of Fireball whiskey while laughing with friends. She embraced the celebratory mood after a successful weekend at the Chicago music festival.

Just days before her 38th birthday on 8 August, Princess Beatrice has broken her cover for a low-key shopping trip to Fortnum & Mason in London.
Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's eldest daughter was spotted dressing in a casual high-street outfit as she blended in with crowds for her outing on 30 July. Choosing to flex her sustainable style credentials, Beatrice opted for one of her previous purchases from Kitri Studio, a deep blue midi dress with balloon sleeves and a belted waist.
The 'Joni' dress retails for £137.50, and Beatrice had previously worn it for a trip to Bluebird restaurant in London in May 2023. At the time, she teamed it with a black cross-body Celine bag and casual trainers, but Beatrice dressed it up with £50 Zara suede ballet flats for her most recent outing.
With her red hair left loose, falling in gentle waves past her shoulders, and her makeup kept minimal, Beatrice ensured she attracted minimal attention.
Princess Beatrice was spotted going under-the-radar in central London

Phillies executive remains confident in Trea Turner's defensive skills originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
While Trea Turner has been reliable from the batter's box, slashing .250/.299/.404 with 16 home runs, the same can't be said for his work on the defensive side of the field. It's an area that sees the Philadelphia Phillies' shortstop put up some rather lackluster performances, recording the second-highest errors in the league (18) for players at any position, while ranking in the bottom ten for putouts by a shortstop (83).
These numbers are one thing, but it's worth noting that they are the makeup of one of the more critical sides to Turner's defensive statistics; he has the lowest fielding percentage among shortstops in the league, .954, which ranks fourth among all players at the time of writing. Some of the more advanced metrics would indicate that Turner has been more than costly in the field, having a defensive runs saved of -14, meaning he's been quite the detriment to his team throughout the season.
All of this is to say that the three-time All-Star has been struggling throughout the campaign, but it's worth highlighting that he has the full support of the Phillies' President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski.
Prior to Monday night's series opener against the Washington Nationals, Dombrowski spoke to the press about Turner's defensive development and apparent slump, something he isn't all that concerned about at the moment.

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs' search for a starting pitcher has landed them a veteran with postseason experience.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman is heading to the Cubs, a source confirmed to the Chicago Tribune, in exchange for two minor leaguers, outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene.
Gausman, 35, gives the Cubs a proven big-league starter, even amid a slightly down year in Toronto. In 23 starts this season, Gausman owns a 4.38 ERA and 102 ERA+ over 127 1/3 innings. He's in the final year of the five-year, $110 million deal he signed with the Blue Jays. In his last start with the Blue Jays on Saturday, Gausman held the St. Louis Cardinals to one run on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
If Gausman pitches on normal rest, he would be lined up to face his former team Thursday in the Blue Jays' makeup game at Wrigley Field. That game was postponed due to weather on June 21.
The Cubs are banking on Gausman's track record as a two-time All-Star with a 3.34 ERA and 124 ERA+ in his previous five seasons. They're also getting a veteran with postseason experience as they look to make a deeper October run. He's pitched in the playoffs in four of the last five years and made six postseason appearances last year for the Blue Jays (10 earned runs in 30 2/3 innings).

You have been waiting for the Cubs to acquire a starting pitcher, and Sunday night, they have done so (Bluesky link):
Per Josh's pre-deadline ranking of Cubs prospects, those are the No. 13 (Ty Southisene) and No. 19 (Brett Bateman) prospects in the Cubs organization. MLB Pipeline ranks them 13th and 21st, respectively.
This is, I believe, a fair deal for a 35-year-old pitcher who is a pending free agent, so this is a rental. The Cubs would be on the hook for slightly more than $7 million of Gausman's $23 million deal for this year. (This might also account for some of the "cash considerations" in the Jameson Taillon deal with the Jays announced earlier today.)
Gausman has a 4.38 ERA and 1.288 WHIP in 23 starts this year and 127.1 innings. His K rate and walk rate are about the same as they've been the last couple of years, and with 50 games remaining, that means likely 10 starts in a Cubs uniform for him.
His last start was Friday against the Cardinals and he allowed nine hits and one run in 5.2 innings. Interestingly enough, his first start for the Cubs could wind up being against his old team, as the Blue Jays will be playing a makeup game Thursday at Wrigley Field — and it's possible his opponent could be Taillon.

As the leading lady in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," Marilyn Monroe became one of the most famous blondes in movie history. Few stars have a signature look that's quite as iconic as Monroe's — from her makeup to her fashion sense to, of course, her blonde bob. Interestingly, though, the star went through a stunning transformation to become the Marilyn Monroe everyone recognizes. While it may be hard to believe, before she found her signature look, Monroe wasn't a natural blonde bombshell. What might be even harder to believe? She may have looked better as a brunette.
Donaldson Collection/Getty
Before the Marilyn Monroe persona and the look that came along with it were born, she was known as Norma Jean Mortenson, a brunette from Los Angeles with a difficult childhood. Dreams of stardom led Monroe to Blue Book Model Agency, where she was reportedly encouraged to give her hair a total makeover, removing her widow's peak and, of course, bleaching it blonde. From there, Monroe's blonde locks went on to become some of the most famous blonde locks ever. Yet looking at photos of her before the change shows that she looked striking with her natural brown waves, too. It's easy to see why some may have thought that the light brunette shade Monroe had wouldn't make her stand out in a crowd quite the way her blonde hair ultimately did, but it gave her a softer, warmer look.

Dorit Kemsley's divorce drama has taken another bitter turn.
The latest dispute comes as the estranged couple continues clashing over finances, with fresh court filings exposing sharply different views of their lifestyle and raising new questions about what ultimately drove the breakdown of their relationship.
Dorit Kemsley married Paul "PK" Kemsley in 2015, and the couple went on to welcome two children while sharing much of their family life on the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."

PK Kemsley has pushed back against Dorit Kemsley's defense of her spending habits, arguing that the reality star's role on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" does not justify the amount allegedly spent on clothing, accessories, hair, and makeup. Just a few weeks ago, only a handful of members of the U.S. women's hockey team were expected to attend the ESPYs, the annual awards show honoring the year's biggest athletes, teams and moments in sports.
By Wednesday afternoon, many more of the reigning Olympic gold medalists were swapping jerseys for gowns inside a midtown Manhattan penthouse. Champagne was flowing. Hair and makeup artists buzzed around the room. Defenseman Mariah Keopple, who also works as a stylist, helped teammates put the finishing touches on their looks before they headed to the awards show, airing live Wednesday night from the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City.
It wasn't exactly the typical pregame routine for one of the world's best hockey teams. And none of it would have happened without an unlikely benefactor: Flavor Flav.
The Public Enemy legend learned last week from U.S. captain Hilary Knight that only a handful of players had been invited to the ESPYs, where Team USA is nominated for Best Team following its dramatic gold-medal victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics. For Flavor Flav, the solution was simple: "I got you."
That promise quickly snowballed.
