Patriots' Christian Gonzalez Gets $35M Contract 'Benchmark' From ESPN originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After it was announced that Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks agreed to a 4-year, $132 million contract, all of the attention instantly turned to New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
Gonzalez and Witherspoon have often been compared in recent years, as there's a strong argument that the two young men are the best at the position in the NFL.
However, Witherspoon signing that contract before Gonzalez is likely to raise the price for the Patriots. According to the latest report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Patriots are likely looking at $35 million per year on a new deal to get something done.
"You've got Witherspoon at $33 million a year, Gonzalez is going to need to top that. That's the play," Fowler said, H/T FanSided.

Kamba never thought he would play football.
He got off to a slow start through his JV season, but every time he was called off the bench, he had an impact.
Kamba said it was during his junior year that things took off.

The NBA has been showing us for a while that simply putting several stars together isn't enough to win anymore. The 2024 Celtics had a stacked roster almost everywhere, with close to 10 guys who could handle minutes, while the 2025 Thunder might honestly be one of the deepest teams we have seen in a long time. Then the Knicks won the 2026 ***** le with a rotation that became much more important after Mike Brown replaced Tom Thibodeau and started trusting the bench more.
That is pretty much the rule now. A team can have crazy firepower in the starting five, but if the second unit can't score, defend, or survive five minutes without the stars, competing for four playoff rounds becomes much harder. Over 82 games, it matters even more, because injuries, rest, and bad shooting nights are going to happen no matter how talented the roster is.
So for this ranking, the focus is simple: which five teams enter 2026-27 with the deepest benches in the league? These are second units with several players who can change a regular-season game, cover an injury for a few weeks, or even stay on the floor during a tough playoff series. That obviously doesn't mean one of these five teams is guaranteed to win the ***** le, but having too many productive bench pieces is always a pretty nice problem to have.
The Rockets have a ridiculous amount of bodies behind their starting five, and the interesting part is that most of them bring something different. If Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr., and Alperen Sengun start, Ime Udoka can still bring Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, Marcus Smart, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Steven Adams, and Clint Capela from the bench.
Sheppard gives them the scoring and shooting that second units usually need. He was up to 13.5 points and 3.4 ***** ists last season while hitting 39.4% from three, so Houston doesn't have to leave Durant on the floor every time VanVleet sits just to have somebody who can create offense.

Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo has on Friday continued to etch his name ever further into the history books of modern football.
This comes courtesy of his exploits in the Portuguese's first appearance of the new campaign in the Saudi Pro League.
Al-Nassr continued the defence of their SPL **** le this evening, making the trip to Al-Riyadh for a Matchday Two clash. The aforementioned Ronaldo, after sitting out the opening round of action, was forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off in Riyadh.
After being introduced to proceedings during the 2nd-half, though, the veteran frontman wasted little time in making his presence felt.
En route to an eventual 4-0 Al-Nassr romp, Ronaldo rounded out the scoring late on, swivelling inside the penalty area before slotting home a fine left-footed finish.

The individual who tossed a green **** toy onto the court during a game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Atlanta Dream on Thursday has been arrested and indefinitely banned from all WNBA, NBA and affiliated league games and events, a league source familiar with the matter confirmed to The Athletic.
The person hurled the toy during the third quarter of the Dream's 124-88 win, a theme that began last season when objects were thrown onto the court at various games. The **** toy was tossed in front of the Sparks bench as Los Angeles forward Jihyun Park was at the free-throw line.
Before Park attempted her free throw, a referee blew her whistle to stop play. Dream forward Angel Reese quickly pointed out the perpetrator from her seat on the bench; security removed the toy, and arena security apprehended the spectator. In video footage that surfaced on social media, the perpetrator tried to flee the arena after being accused, but police quickly detained the individual.
The WNBA plans to work closely with law enforcement authorities to hold individuals accountable for throwing objects onto the court, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.
Sex toys being thrown onto the court became an issue last season in July, when an object was thrown onto the court across six games, including in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Phoenix and Los Angeles. Police arrested two people — 18-year-old Kaden Lopez in Phoenix and 23-year-old Delbert Carver in Georgia — as they were behind a group money scheme with cryptocurrency.

The bond market has been sending a warning signal this summer. On Wednesday, the Treasury Department responded.
After a bond market selloff drove long-term U.S. bond yields to their highest level in years, the Treasury Department announced today that it is at least doubling its planned buybacks of longer-term government bonds, from a maximum of $2 billion to at least $4 billion. The change will start on September 9 and run through November 4, the day after the midterm elections.
"This administration needs a win and maybe that comes in the form of artificially trying to keep long Treasury rates contained," Jack McIntyre, a portfolio manager at Brandywine Global Investment Management, told Bloomberg. "They have to try something. Sentiment around the long-end globally is about as bearish as I have seen in a very long time."
The surprise announcement came just weeks after the Treasury Department had issued its quarterly "refunding" announcement, detailing its near-term debt-management plans. That suggests that the recent bond selloff really did set off some alarm bells at the Treasury, which said in its announcement that its move is meant "to provide greater liquidity support" at the long end of the bond market.
The announcement had the desired immediate effect of lowering longer-term yields, which had been rising because of concerns about persistent inflation and higher oil prices due to the war with Iran as well as worries about the U.S. budget deficit and rising debt. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury, which had been just under 4% at the end of February, topped 4.7% earlier this week, a sizable move for the bond market. And the 30-year Treasury yield this week reached its highest level since June 2007, before the financial crisis of 2008 sent interest rates plunging toward zero. Both fell back on Wednesday following the Treasury Department's announcement.

Arsenal start the defence of their Premier League ******* le on Friday night, and the expectation is obvious. They have already brushed aside Manchester City in the Community Shield, winning 3-0 in Cardiff, and now they open at home against promoted Coventry. Same sky-blue shirts, very different level of threat.
Mikel Arteta's side go into the new campaign as favourites for good reason. They won the league by seven points last season, ended a 22-year wait for the ******* le, and reached the Champions League final. The immediate task is simpler, start fast, stay in control, and avoid handing a newly promoted team encouragement.
Coventry arrive with a different kind of momentum. Frank Lampard guided them back to the top flight after a 25-year absence, and they did it emphatically. While ******* nal finished seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, Coventry won the Championship with 95 points, nine ahead of Ipswich. Promotion earned them a place here, now comes the difficult part.
Arsenal still have defensive issues to manage. William Saliba is set for a lengthy spell out, while Jurrien Timber remains unavailable with a groin problem. That leaves Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera continuing in the back line, with Ezri Konsa still waiting to complete his £51million move from Aston Villa.
There should also be changes from the side that beat City. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both began on the bench in that 3-0 win, but are expected to return to the starting XI here. That matters. ******* nal are a different side when both play from the first whistle, one gives them incision, the other gives them authority.

Gold opened lower Wednesday morning but rose in early trading as the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields pulled back slightly. The U.S. Dollar Index (DX-Y.NYB) was down 0.2%, while the benchmark CBOE Interest Rate 10 Year T No (^TNX) declined 0.4%. The 10-year yield still remains near its 12-month high, achieved on July 31.
Weakness in the U.S. dollar precedes the release of the FOMC's minutes from the July meeting. Investors will evaluate the minutes for hints on the Fed's short-term outlook for interest rates. That outlook is complicated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East driving inflation risk, coupled with recent softness in retail sales.
CME FedWatch estimates a 67.4% probability that the Fed will not change interest rates at the September meeting. A rate increase pressures the gold price by making yield-bearing **** ets look more attractive in comparison. The opposite is also true. Gold has gained more than 10% over the last three weeks as rate-hike expectations have declined.

Real Madrid face another league fixture with significant changes in the squad traveling for the game. José Mourinho spoke at a press conference to preview the match against RCD Espanyol in Barcelona. During his appearance, the Portuguese coach confirmed the absences of Endrick and Aurélien Tchouameni.
The most notable absence among the recent arrivals is Endrick. The Brazilian forward has been left out of the squad and will not travel with the group. As the coach himself explained, he is the only unavailable player who is not carrying issues over from last season.
For his part, Tchouameni will also not wear the Real Madrid shirt this Saturday in Cornellà. Although the French midfielder is recovering well from his physical issues, the coaching staff have decided not to take any risks and to keep him on a specific training plan to complete his return to full fitness.
"Tchouameni has to train today, tomorrow, and Sunday to speed up his process. He arrived in a condition that does not allow him to be ready for this match," Mourinho said regarding the French midfielder's fitness.
To cover these absences and complete the squad list, the coach from Setúbal will turn to the Valdebebas academy. Academy players Mario Rivas, Joan Martínez and Alexis Ciria will be on the bench against Espanyol.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier today announced a new buyback program for longer-dated Treasury securities that arrives at a moment when the U.S. bond market is under extraordinary stress, with 30-year yields having surged to 5.33% — levels not seen since 2007 — and the benchmark 10-year yield (TOQ26) pressing above 4.72%.
The buyback plan represents Bessent's most direct intervention yet into a market that has been deteriorating for weeks despite economic data that would normally support lower yields, including cooling retail sales, unexpected job losses in July, and moderating core inflation near 2.5%.

HOUSTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Crude oil prices rose on Wednesday and settled at the highest in nearly four weeks, as investors worried about escalating tensions in the Middle East after the United Arab Emirates decided to suspend all financial and economic transactions with Iran, and as ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained slow.
Brent crude futures settled at $91.62 a barrel, up 60 cents, or 0.7%. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 89 cents, or 1.1%, to settle at $85.83 a barrel.
Both benchmarks closed at their highest since July 24.
"Crude futures remain supported by the geopolitical tensions that remain in the Middle East, now with the UAE stating they have cut off all financial ties to Iran due to the latest missile attacks," said Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial.

LOS ANGELES -- This one felt over before it started.
The Sparks scored the first basket before the Dream scored nine in a row and never looked back. The lead grew to double figures in the first and it was all dust for the Sparks after that.
The Dream blitzed the Sparks all game to the point they nearly broke the record for most points for a team in a WNBA game. The final score was 124-88.
Rhyne Howard beat the first quarter buzzer with a three to put the Dream up, 34-12. The Sparks were never able to cut it to single digits.
"I do want to give Atlanta credit," Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. "Man, they were good tonight and their shooting, to maintain that three-point shooting throughout 40 minutes is impressive. And their bench, starters, everybody, you know, (Angel) Reese going two for two (from three), nine for nine from the field, like, they were really good. And so, sometimes, you just have to take it on the chin and turn the page.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Sparks and Atlanta Dream experienced a blast from the recent past during their matchup at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night.
During the third quarter of the lopsided contest, a spectator hurled a green ****** toy onto the court, sparking flashbacks to last season's spate of projectiles. Angel Reese pointed out the perpetrator right away from her seat on the bench, and he was apprehended by arena security.
The middle of the 2025 WNBA season was marred by several instances of green toys being thrown onto the court during play. The incidents started in late July at a Dream game and continued through the following week, including once at a Sparks game. The trend died out soon afterward and was thought to be linked to a particular memecoin.
This story will be updated.

The trend died out soon afterward and was thought to be linked to a particular memecoin.

Gold (GC=F) December futures opened at $4,391.40 per troy ounce on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, down 0.7% from Tuesday's closing price. The price of gold is up this morning at $4,479.90 per troy ounce as of 8:53 a.m. ET.
A rate increase pressures the gold price by making yield-bearing ***** ets look more attractive in comparison. The opposite is also true. Gold has gained more than 10% over the last three weeks as rate-hike expectations have declined.

Over the past several weeks, Sophie Cunningham has emerged as one of the most high-profile players in the WNBA after she chose to speak out against transgender women competing in women's sports. The unfortunate reality, however, is that her actual production on the court does not match her fame, and that was quite evident on Thursday night.
Despite Cunningham's recent surge in popularity, she is just a role player who comes off the bench for the Indiana Fever, and she had her worst game of the season on Thursday night, leading to some strong criticism on social media.
Last month, Cunningham made headlines across the country and the world when she was quoted as speaking out against transgender athletes in an ESPN article.
In an interview for the ESPN profile, Cunningham was asked about her political beliefs, including the "MAGA Barbie" nickname that she has been given recently. In response, the Indiana Fever guard shared her opinion on transgender athletes competing in women's sports.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she told ESPN. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

Aug 20 (Reuters) - The three main U.S. equity indexes closed lower on Thursday as rising Treasury yields dented risk appetite while disappointing results from retail bellwether Walmart soured investors on the consumer sector and rallying oil prices fanned inflation worries.
Walmart shares tumbled 9.2% after the world's largest traditional retailer missed Wall Street expectations for quarterly comparable sales as rising gasoline prices had shoppers reining in spending. The report dragged down the S&P 500 consumer staples and consumer discretionary sectors, which were among the weakest of the benchmark's 11 major industry indexes.
Rival retailers such as Costco, Dollar Tree and Albertsons followed Walmart lower with losses between 1% and 2.6%.
The increase in U.S. crude oil above $87 compounded concerns about the health of the U.S. consumer, according to Mona Mahajan, head of investment strategy at Edward Jones. She noted that investors were already anxious after recent weaker-than-expected retail sales and labor market data for July.

BYU added a massive late addition to its roster as Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler announced his commitment to BYU. Kohler is eligible to play this coming season as the state of California lawsuit he was part of received a temporary injunction allowing fifth-year graduated players college eligibility. The NCAA may appeal the decision.
The American Fork, Utah native is LDS and was one of the best big men in the Big 10 last year. Kohler spent all four seasons at Michigan State, going from bench player his first two seasons to starting 69 games his last two seasons for Tom Izzo. Kohler went from a back-to-basket big man his first two year two a stretch big his last season. As a senior, Kohler averaged 12.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and shot 39% from three and and 87% from the FT line. Kohler was 0-5 combined his first two seasons from three, and as a senior shot 58-139. For all players listed at 6-foot-10 or taller, Jaxon was tied for sixth in college basketball last season in threes made (stat courtesy of X account CBBAnalystics). Listed at 6-foot-10 by Michigan State, Kohler primarily played the four in Michigan State's big lineup but will likely primarily play the five spot at BYU.
Had Jaxon entered the transfer portal back in April, he would be a top 10 transfer this cycle. If he would have entered the portal then, he would have been the most impactful player big man BYU could have realistically landed. Just look at what Kohler did when Michigan State played at Michigan, the national champion with three lottery big men in their frontcourt. Kohler scored 23 points and grabbed 8 boards on 10-13 shooting from the floor and 2-4 from three. He led the Spartans in points and rebounds against the vaunted Wolverine front line. Kohler had 12 double doubles last season and was top 5 in the Big 10 and offensive and defensive rebound percentage.
Kohler takes BYU to a fringe top 25 team to a Big 12 **** le **** le contender. I have Jaxon as the best offensive big man in the Big 12 and one of the three best bigs in the league along with Arizona's Mo Krivas and Houston's Jo Tugler.
Jaxon is not a shot blocker, and I have questions about BYU's defense. He does bring effort and great rebounding prowess on that end, however, and should make BYU one the nation's top offenses. No big that is elite on both ends of the floor stays in college more than one year. Jaxon is a fifth-year senior that will be one of the top big men in college basketball. Out of any big man that BYU has pursued this offseason, none would have been more impactful or lead to more wins that Kohler will.

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing is still working to return to the field, and despite early pessimism about his return behind the plate, he is set to start throwing progression.
Rushing has a slight tear in his UCL, leaving him unable to perform one of the key duties as a catcher: throwing the ball back to a pitcher and trying to pick off any steal attempts.
Initially, Dave Roberts said that Rushing was unlikely to play catcher for the Dodgers this year, and if he returned, it would be as a pinch hitter, giving them a slugging lefty off the bench.
"I would say it's very small. I hope I'm wrong," Roberts said a few weeks ago. "He's a tough kid, and so for him to go through this speaks a lot. … Certainly a possibility with the time, but we're certainly trying to keep the bat alive for sure."

Pershing Square is an alternative ****** et manager that primarily manages capital in publicly traded investment vehicles, with 98% of its capital structure dedicated to such ****** ets, including Howard Hughes Holdings. This capital permanency allows for long-term investments, fostering sustainable competitive advantages and yielding substantial market returns since 2018. The investment strategy focuses on acquiring high-quality companies at safe price points, anticipating significant annual EPS growth of 15% or more in the coming years. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Pershing Square Holdings highlighted S&P Global Inc. (NYSE:SPGI). S&P Global Inc. (NYSE:SPGI) is a financial services and ****** ytics company that provides benchmarks, data, ****** ytics, and workflow solutions in the global capital, energy, commodity, and automotive markets. On August 18, 2026, S&P Global Inc. (NYSE:SPGI) closed at $418.04 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $123.24 billion. S&P Global Inc. (NYSE:SPGI) posted a one‑month return of -2.57%, while its shares lost 20.66% over the past 52 weeks.
Pershing Square Holdings stated the following regarding S&P Global Inc. (NYSE:SPGI) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Earlier this year, we initiated a position in S&P Global Inc. (NYSE:SPGI), a business we have admired for decades and previously owned in 2017. S&P Global provides benchmarks, data, ****** ytics, and workflow tools to 19 customers in the financial and energy markets. The business generates over 80% of profits from three dominant benchmark franchises: Ratings, Indices, and Platts. The remaining profits are derived from the sale of proprietary and non-proprietary data and insights delivered to customers across a range of channels, together with embedded, primarily desktop-based workflow and ****** ytics tools. The company also previously owned an automotive data and ****** ytics business, which was spun off into a separate public company in July 2026.
Our opportunity to invest in S&P Global arose amid concerns of AI disintermediation of the company's data offerings and workflow and ****** ytics products, including Capital IQ. In February 2026, the stock declined more than 25% from peak-to-trough following Anthropic's launch of Claude Cowork and SPGI's release of 2026 organic growth guidance that was below the company's medium-term financial targets announced at their November 2025 Investor Day. As a result, the stock's valuation declined from 25 to 19 times earnings per share, the lowest valuation in the previous five years, and a bargain level for a company that is often cited as one of the world's highest-quality businesses..." West Brom forward Aune Heggebo has been handed a two-match suspension for "successful deception of a match official" after scoring a goal with his hand during their 2-1 victory at Norwich in the opening Sky Bet Championship match of the new season.
The Football ****** ociation charged the Norwegian player with misconduct, contrary to FA Rule E3.1, following last weekend's fixture at Carrow Road, where on-field officials allowed his 75th-minute goal to stand despite objections raised by the Norwich players and bench.
Heggebo had contested the charge, but an independent regulatory commission found it to be proven and handed down the sanction after a hearing.
West Brom stated the charge is believed to be "the first of its kind in English football", arising from a regulatory change prior to the 2024-25 season. The club's appeal maintained the ball had taken a deflection off the Norwich goalkeeper immediately before touching Heggebo's arm, making any such contact accidental.

Leeds United will lock horns with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this Saturday as they hope to secure maximum points on the road in the Premier League. The Whites managed to earn a dominant 4-0 win over Augsburg in a pre-season friendly match recently, which should give them some confidence going into this game.
Daniel Farke will set his team in a 3-4-3 formation and is expected to name a strong first team for this clash. Dominic Calvert-Lewin will get the nod to spearhead Leeds United's attack up top.
James Trafford will feature in goal for the Whites as he looks to secure a clean sheet at the City Ground this weekend. Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Tarik Muharemović will make up Leeds' back three. All three of them would have to maintain a good defensive shape at the back if they want to keep the Nottingham attackers frustrated during the 90 minutes.
Sebastiaan Bornauw will provide cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

Stanley Druckenmiller has been active south of the U.S. border lately.
The billionaire investment manager's Duquesne Family Office bought $128 million of YPF SA (NYSE: YPF), Argentina's state-controlled oil producer, in the first quarter, pairing it with a purchase of BBB Foods (NYSE: TBBB), a Mexican discount grocer, and a new stake in the Global X MSCI Argentina ETF (NYSEMKT: ARGT), an exchange-traded fund (ETF) holding a basket of Argentine equities.

While all three of those names are up substantially over the past 12 months, Argentine equities suffered a sharp sell-off in September 2025 after President Javier Milei's party lost a key provincial vote, and the benchmark Merval index dipped again in early 2026, just before Druckenmiller loaded up.
So what is the famous macro investor banking on by buying these stocks?

There's no getting around it: The market looks expensive on several metrics. The broader benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is now up over 102% since the start of 2023 despite some pretty glaring warning signs. In recent years, investors have breezed past the longest inverted yield curve in history, a banking crisis, elevated inflation, and the Iran war.
Is it really smart to buy stocks right now? Here's Warren Buffett's advice.

As I mentioned, it's hard to dispute that the S&P 500 looks expensive right now.
The Buffett indicator, which is named after Buffett, who has called it "probably the best single measure of where valuations stand at any given moment," is at an all-time high of 238%. In the second quarter, the Baron Focused Growth Fund achieved a 13.26% gain, still trailing the Russell 2500 Growth Index's 24.02% return.
