SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — New PayPal (PYPL) CEO Enrique Lores doesn't sound like a guy running toward the exit after inking a huge deal to sell the company he just started leading. He sounds like a veteran top executive who's head-down trying to reinvent a fintech icon.
"First of all, we have said that we are totally open and objective to evaluating the plan that we have versus external offers," Lores told Yahoo Finance from the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Tech Conference (video above). "We will always choose whatever provides more value. We have three growing businesses, three businesses where we can increase the value and the profit that we generate. We believe we have a strong plan to execute. We have the right team, and we think that we are going to be creating a lot of value for shareholders."
Payments player Stripe (STRI.PVT) and private firm Advent International walked away in late August from trying to acquire PayPal for a reported $53 billion, or $60.50 per share, after the board rejected their overture.
It has been speculated that PayPal's board was looking for $70 per share.
PayPal stock has since plunged to $53.20 as investors become more cautious again about the pace of a turnaround. The stock is down 81% over the past five years.

PayPal (PYPL) trades at 9.8 times earnings while the S&P 500 trades at 23.2. The profitability underneath is ordinary: an 18.4% operating margin against 18.5% for the market. The discount is not about whether the company makes money. It is about what each dollar it moves is worth.
Why Does PayPal Take In Less On Every Dollar It Moves?
In fiscal Q2 2026 the company moved $486 billion of payment volume, up 9% on a currency-neutral basis. Revenue on the same basis grew 3%. The transaction take rate fell 7 basis points to 1.61%, and by the company's own account the drop came from branded co-marketing investments and mix dynamics, including faster Venmo growth.
The PayPal ***** on itself, branded checkout, grew 2% currency-neutral for a second straight quarter. Venmo and Braintree both grew in the mid-teens. The growth is real, and it is arriving through the doors that pay less.
Who Is Bringing PayPal That Volume Now?

Marvell (MRVL) stock was under significant pressure on Aug. 28 even though the custom chip specialist posted a market-beating Q2, featuring a 37% year-on-year increase in revenue.
Crucially, the semiconductor giant also raised its guidance for fiscal 2028 to around $18 billion, which would represent 50% growth on a year-over-year basis.

As one of the most important investors of our time, David Einhorn is a legend on Wall Street that many investors pay close attention to, and for good reason. I'm one such investor who follows the 13-F filings of Einhorn's DME Capital Management, and when there's a big move, I want to dive in. In addition to adding stakes in Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), PayPal (PYPL) and Fortune Brands (FBIN) during the second quarter, Einhorn completely exited his position in Peloton (PTON) in Q2.
Let's dive into what may be behind this move, and what investors should make of Peloton moving forward.

US stocks moderated from earlier gains in midday trading on Friday as investors digested Kevin Warsh's first keynote address at the annual Jackson Hole Symposium, with the Fed chairman's comments interpreted as mildly hawkish in the near term.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) slipped below the flat line, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) slide 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined by 0.4% after rising by as much as 0.5% earlier in the day.
In his speech, Warsh stated that inflation was running too high and that price stability would be the Fed's predominant focus. Even if market participants didn't necessarily get all of the clarity they were looking for, Warsh's comments were taken as hawkish enough to send yields on short-term Treasurys higher by several basis points.
In the equities market, investors continued to digest Nvidia's (NVDA) blowout earnings report and growth projections from Wednesday, while shares in Marvell Technology (MRVL) fell on its own second quarter figures. PayPal (PYPL) lost more than 10% on the news that Advent and Stripe have backed out of a proposed $50 billion takeover.
Upward revisions in the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment readings, released at 10 a.m. ET, provided a lightly positive note for the economy.

The Wall Street Journal reported on August 14, 2026, that PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) is in talks to sell itself to a group including Stripe and private equity firm Advent International after Stripe and Advent's initial July offer of $60.50 a share was rejected as too low, with the two sides now negotiating a higher price.
PayPal's market value has collapsed from a 2021 peak of about $360 billion to as low as roughly $36 billion this year. Now the company built by early digital-payments pioneers is negotiating its own sale.
That raises the real question: does a Stripe-Advent deal rescue PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL)'s business at a fair price, or does it confirm the company simply couldn't turn around its slowing growth alone?
The initial $60.50-per-share offer represented roughly a 28% premium to PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL)'s prior closing price and was backed by about $50 billion in committed bank financing. William Blair ****** yst Andrew Jeffrey said PayPal's new CEO likely would not accept a "low-ball offer." Blair predicated Stripe and Advent could go as high as $70 a share. Combining Stripe's merchant-focused business with PayPal's more than 430 million consumer accounts would create a combined payments giant processing about $3.7 trillion in annual volume. PayPal CEO Enrique Lores has already split the company into three units, checkout, Venmo, and payments and crypto, since taking over in March as part of a big recovery effort.
PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL)'s own struggles are exactly why a sale is on the table. Rivals like Apple Pay and Google Pay have taken. As of July, PayPal has lost more than 40% of its market value over just the past 12 months, and its market cap is still roughly one-tenth of its 2021 peak. There's no guarantee talks result in a deal at all, since PayPal already rejected the first offer as insufficient.

Greenlight Capital is an investment management firm specializing in value-oriented strategies. The letter can be downloaded here. Greenlight Capital released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, reporting a 4.3% decline for the Partnerships and a 1.9% year-to-date gain, net of fees and expenses, compared with gains of 15.2% and 10.2% for the S&P 500 Index. The funds entered the quarter conservatively, but costly trading decisions and macro positions, particularly in gold and U.S. interest rates, weighed on results. Long positions contributed roughly 9%, offset by similar losses from shorts. The letter also highlighted concerns over speculative market conditions, using **** eX's $1.75 trillion IPO valuation and investment-grade rating as examples of excess. Looking ahead, Greenlight is more constructive on Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's inflation stance and expects positions to recover if inflation moderates and rates remain unchanged. Additionally, reviewing the Strategy's top holdings could help identify its best ideas for 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Greenlight Capital highlighted PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL). PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL). PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) is a leading technology platform that provides digital payment solutions for merchants and consumers. On August 26, 2026, PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) closed at $61.68 per share. Over the past month, Primo Brands Corporation (NYSE:PRMB) returned 6.92%, while its shares have declined 12.02% in the last 52 weeks. Primo Brands Corporation (NYSE:PRMB) has a market capitalization of $52.88 billion, and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $38.46 to $79.22.
Greenlight Capital stated the following regarding PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) is a consumer-facing payments platform with over 400 million active customers around the world. PYPL has long been viewed as being on the wrong side of the shift toward newer payment methods like Apple Pay, Shop Pay and Buy-Now-Pay-Later. After disappointing fourth-quarter results and a CEO transition, the stock sold off, creating an opportunity for us to acquire our position at an average price of $43.53. We believe PYPL's collection of payment **** ets is worth substantially more than the 8x earnings we paid. PYPL ended the quarter at $43.18. Subsequent to quarter-end, Stripe and Advent International reportedly made a joint offer to buy PYPL for $60.50 per share."

Financial technology firms' SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI) and PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL)'s shares have diverged in performance in 2026. SOFI is down by 31% year-to-date while PYPL is up by 5.9%. PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL)'s stock has gained primarily on the back of takeover news, but Cramer has remained unconvinced. In his previous remarks about the firm, the CNBC TV host remarked that he was hesitant to recommend the stock on the basis of takeover news. In his morning appearance on August 17th, Cramer admonished **** ysts for recommending the stocks even though they were struggling:
"One of the more irritating parts of this market is, the insistence of loving fintech. The **** ysts just love fintech. And the three that they love are SoFi, Klarna, and now PayPal. Look, I totally understand it. But you don't need to reiterate every day people. We understand. PayPal maybe a takeover candidate. Klarna is doing really great. SoFi, it's going to come back. Just stop. **** ysts stop recommending these. Let them go to where they are on the downside. And then you can recommend them. . .I really think that's what happened is that, thatPayPal, when we heard that it might get a takeover bid, it made everything really exciting to people. But I just think, no, just go buy Wells Fargo. Go buy JPMorgan over Klarna. Okay. Or over PayPal."
SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI)'s narrative surrounds its valuation. The firm's forward P/E ratio is 31.55, which is nearly double that of banking giant JPMorgan and more than 2x of PYPL's 11.79. The risk to SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI)'s valuation comes from its transformation into a digital bank from a student loan company. Therefore, the firm's Financial Services and Technology platforms are at the center of the narrative.
On this front, SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI)'s second quarter saw its two businesses grow net revenue by 29% and drop by 23% annually. Technology suffered as a large client transitioned away from the platform. SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI)'s management added that the two businesses should account for more than 50% of overall revenue over the long term. To sum it up, the firm's headwinds could stem from high deposit costs of sizable amount of funds, such as $45 billion in the latest quarter, while the capital light Financial Services business and fee-driven Technology Services could lead the way to growth.
Shifting towards PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL), it's all about turnaround versus acquisitions. The turnaround camp, of which its management is also a part of, hinges on improved checkout performance, AI modernization, cost savings and Venmo growth. Through these, PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) aims to save $400 million in costs in 2026 and streamline headcount in 2027. Therefore, the firm could experience tailwinds should it achieve the stated $1.5 billion in gross run rate savings and generate earnings power.

Nvidia (NVDA) will release its second-quarter fiscal 2027 financial results on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Given the company's dominant position in the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure ******* e, Nvidia appears well-positioned to deliver robust revenue and earnings growth in Q2. Further, Nvidia's current valuation looks attractive relative to its earnings growth potential and peers, setting the stage for meaningful upside.
The broader AI investment cycle remains a significant tailwind for Nvidia. These trends suggest that AI-related spending could remain elevated, supporting Nvidia's financials.

On CNBC's Mad Money's August 3 episode, host Jim Cramer highlighted PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) as one of the standout performers in the S&P 500 during July as it gained 32.5%. While noting operational improvements under Chief Executive Officer Enrique Lores, Cramer focused on the market reaction surrounding a reported buyout proposal from private fintech competitor Stripe and private equity partner Advent International:
Third best performing in the S&P 500… in July… PayPal. That's up 32.5%. Now, while the company's certainly doing much better under Enrique Lores than its previous CEO. The stock roared because PayPal apparently got a takeover overture from the giant private fintech company called Stripe, with the backing also of a big private equity firm. Now, they haven't agreed to anything, but it hasn't been shot down. Quizzical.
Reports of a joint buyout offer from Stripe and Advent International valued PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) at approximately $53 billion, or $60.50 per share, a significant premium over its pre-announcement trading price. The acquisition attempt represents a rare role reversal, in which a private fintech firm, backed by major financial investors, is trying to buy out an established market leader.
While both platforms dominate online commerce processing, PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) and Stripe represent contrasting business architectures and growth trajectories within fintech. PayPal operates as a consumer-facing ecosystem with hundreds of millions of active digital wallets alongside its merchant services. That dual-sided model gives PayPal deep brand recognition, yet leaves it exposed to changing consumer payment preferences and margin pressure in basic checkout processing.
Stripe functions as developer-first infrastructure, embedding payment capabilities directly into application software, SaaS platforms, and enterprise marketplaces. While PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) relies on legacy brand equity and consumer wallet engagement, Stripe built its market share by serving software engineers and digital businesses. Combining the two firms would pair PayPal's massive global network and consumer base with Stripe's strength among software developers, though clearing regulatory scrutiny and merging their massive tech systems would pose major challenges.

The digital payments giant sent a fortune back to its owners, yet the stock fell far behind the market. Here is the accounting of what that cash really bought.
PayPal (PYPL) operates the digital wallet and payment network millions use for everything from online shopping to splitting a dinner bill. But while its service is familiar, its stock, trading around $59.78, has been a source of frustration, sitting about 34% below its two-year high. Against that backdrop, the company has executed one of the largest capital returns in the market. Over the last five years, it handed back nearly $26 billion to shareholders, a figure equal to 51% of its entire current value. The company paid owners a fortune while the stock lagged; was holding worth it, and is it now?
A $26 Billion Payout Fueled Almost Entirely by Buybacks
The cash return machine is powered by the fees PayPal collects on its large payment volume, generating a free cash flow yield of 12.6%. The company then directs that cash back to its owners. The method, however, has been overwhelmingly one-sided. Of the total returned over five years, a huge $26 billion came from share repurchases, with just $252 million paid out as dividends.
This buyback-heavy strategy is designed to shrink the share count and boost earnings per share. It is a vote of confidence from management, using company cash to buy its own stock. But for the individual investor, the real measure is total return, which accounts for both price movement and dividends.

US tech stocks regained their footing on Tuesday as a sell-off in chip stocks underscored concerns about AI circular financing deals, countering a drop in oil prices and earnings optimism.
The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) bounced back from earlier losses to hover near the flat line. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose nearly 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) climbed 1.2% as investors weighed the latest quarterly results.
Stocks generally moved higher as the earnings deluge continued. Boeing (BA), PayPal (PYPL), and Coca-Cola (KO) all rose after reporting results, with Coca-Cola stock on track for its best day since 2009. Investors will be watching SK Hynix's results due around 8 p.m. ET for insight into the memory trade as AI worries swirl.
That helped offset souring sentiment in the chip sector amid reports that Nvidia (NVDA) is exploring a $250 billion funding backstop for OpenAI (OPAI.PVT), further intertwining the two companies and heightening worries about circular financing. Tech traders also grew nervous that Chinese competition is narrowing the AI gap with US companies, undermining prospects for a payoff.
Oil prices, meanwhile, continued to retreat after the US and Iran halted active fighting and President Trump said the two sides were in diplomatic talks. "There's a good chance that something could happen, and if it does, good," Trump said aboard Air Force One on Monday. "If it doesn't, we go back to doing what we were doing."

PayPal (PYPL) stock rose more than 4% on Tuesday after the payments giant defended its multiyear turnaround plan without completely closing the door to a potential merger.
"While there is still significant work ahead, I have strong conviction in our direction and in our ability to execute," PayPal president and CEO Enrique Lores said.
"At the same time, we remain open and objective in evaluating opportunities," he added. "If we see levers or a path that we believe would create superior value for our shareholders that execute in our current strategy, we would, of course, carefully consider them."
Earlier this year, Stripe and private equity firm Advent offered to acquire PayPal for around $60 per share, according to a report from Reuters earlier this month. The news sent PayPal's stock surging.
"For now, while we remain open, our focus is on executing our own strategic plan," Lores added.

Tesla (TSLA) reported that its electric vehicle (EV) sales jumped in the second quarter, as the firm is likely benefiting from higher demand for EVs amid higher gasoline prices. And in a sign that the automaker expects the latter trend to continue for some time, Elon Musk's company reportedly plans to increase production at its German auto plants.
Still, with Tesla's self-driving technology and robotaxi initiatives underwhelming in many respects and the shares still changing hands at an extremely high valuation, TSLA stock looks very expensive.
