Bakersfield High football coach Cody Stone calls it the "relief syndrome." It's the feeling one has by passing a tough test on the field. Stone, as he's stated each week after a Drillers' victory, doesn't believe in that kind of thinking.
So it's no surprise that BHS' 46-14 victory over Clovis West last Friday continued that approach. But scoring 46 points against a top five team in the CIF Central Section makes it harder to downplay.
"I was happy, not just with our kids, but our entire coaching staff," he said. "I was pleased with the way the kids executed the game plan. Our coaches held the kids to a high standard.
"Clovis West is a very historic program. They have a great coach, great talent, but our kids came out and got on them pretty quick. What I think our coaches liked most was that our kids came out and never let up."
He and his staff also enjoyed seeing players support each other. More than once on a long touchdown run, teammates escorted each other and celebrated in the end zone.

The Cleveland Browns were unable to overcome the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week One of the 2026-27 NFL season, 34-10.
Cleveland's disastrous performance on Sunday afternoon fell on the hands of the offense, as the unit failed to consistently move the ball downfield. This unfortunately forced the defense into brutal field position for most of the contest, which led to Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence's incredible four-touchdown performance.
During his opening remarks to the media following the loss, head coach Todd Monken told reporters that the Browns "didn't execute on the road" the way they expected to this past weekend.
"We didn't execute on the road the way we expected," Monken claimed. "Without really seeing the tape, the obvious issues came in operation, and a couple delay of games and false starts that we thought we cleaned up, but obviously we didn't."
One of the most pressing issues for the Browns' offense on Sunday was the simple line-of-scrimmage operations that Monken stressed for most of the offseason.

Whatever could go wrong, did go wrong for the Packers late in Sunday's collapse against the Minnesota Vikings, as defensive coordinator Brian Flores exploited every possible weakness in Green Bay's offensive line in a fourth quarter barrage of pressure.
While it was Flores' cacophony of exotic blitz concepts executed by Vikings edge rushers that flew to the football, and Packers quarterback Jordan Love that torpedoed Matt LaFleur's squad, Green Bay can take some solace to build on from a dismal 39-22 loss.

Hub Group anticipates receiving a delisting notification from Nasdaq following delays in submitting its financial reports, which stemmed from an accounting error identified earlier this year. The company missed a Monday deadline to comply with Nasdaq's financial reporting requirements. It will ask for a hearing to keep its stock listing intact and plans to seek a further extension of the filing requirements.
The company said receipt of the letter doesn't mean shares will immediately stop trading, and that the hearing request will automatically stay a delisting for 15 calendar days. It will also ask for shares not to be delisted during the hearing process, which can take approximately 30 to 45 days to commence following the request.
"While there can be no ***** urances, the Company expects that the Company's Class A common stock will continue to trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market during the hearing process," a Monday news release stated. "In addition, the Company expects to present to the Nasdaq Hearings Panel a compelling plan to regain full compliance with Nasdaq's continued listing requirements and to secure sufficient time to execute such plan."
Hub Group (NASDAQ: HUBG) announced in February that it had identified a $77-million understatement in purchased transportation expenses during the first three quarters of 2025, and that it was delaying fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 financial reporting. It said in May that "prematurely or incorrectly recognized" transactions were also discovered during 2023 and 2024, and that those periods, along with the first three quarters of 2025, would need to be restated.
It plans to complete the restatement process and file results for the outstanding periods during the fourth quarter. Shares of HUBG were off 6.2% in early trading on Monday compared to the S&P 500, which was down 0.6%.

What's been exciting about Robinhood Chain (RHC) is seeing tokens attempt new mechanisms to answer questions like: why would someone hold this token? The 60,000-plus people in Gies Memorial Stadium knew where the ball was going. Illinois' defense knew who was getting the ball. Duke's offense definitely knew who they trusted.
Nate Sheppard, who had already scored three touchdowns on the day, ran up the middle for two yards, and the Blue Devils were able to run out the clock for a massive 31-27 victory in Champaign against the Fighting Illini.
"I think everybody knew right there where the ball was going," Sheppard said. "I think the whole stadium knew where the ball was going. It was just a matter of could we execute."
It was the 24th carry of Sheppard's day, with the sophomore running for 147 yards and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 41 yards and two scores. Despite the three trips to the end zone, his most impressive run might have been the one that set up his first touchdown of the game: a 19-yard run where he continued to evade would-be tacklers somehow and keep his balance.

Give all the credit to Duke. They're able to get out of here with a W. Obviously, one of the things that we've really prided ourselves on over the last five years, going to year six, is more games are lost than won. Something that we try to get right from day one since we got here. And I'm not diminishing anything Duke did. I just think that we did enough things to cause us to fail. Obviously, turnover a little bit, but I think it was more the penalties and the mental errors that just caused us to self-implode a couple times on really all three phases. So that's all on me. I got to clean up the details, just simple things from the way we communicate, the way we execute in critical moments, some things that could have easily been avoided. And just a shame, I apologize.
Obviously to get a sell out here and to have a crowd the way we did, winning is addictive. For players, coaches, and fans, you get used to having success in those moments. And when it doesn't happen, you're upset, you're ***** , you're mad, you're angry. And I definitely fall into that category. My Saturday's always a lot better. I got two girls at home that love to have a fun time. And when you don't have success, it just sits with you for seven days. So the part that you got to learn is you'll learn more and more. The more you go through these moments, you just learn so much more in moments of adversity than you do in moments of success. So this is definitely an adverse moment that we got to take advantage of. I ask them to have big eyes and ears tomorrow. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — New PayPal (PYPL) CEO Enrique Lores doesn't sound like a guy running toward the exit after inking a huge deal to sell the company he just started leading. He sounds like a veteran top executive who's head-down trying to reinvent a fintech icon.
"First of all, we have said that we are totally open and objective to evaluating the plan that we have versus external offers," Lores told Yahoo Finance from the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Tech Conference (video above). "We will always choose whatever provides more value. We have three growing businesses, three businesses where we can increase the value and the profit that we generate. We believe we have a strong plan to execute. We have the right team, and we think that we are going to be creating a lot of value for shareholders."
Payments player Stripe (STRI.PVT) and private firm Advent International walked away in late August from trying to acquire PayPal for a reported $53 billion, or $60.50 per share, after the board rejected their overture.
It has been speculated that PayPal's board was looking for $70 per share.
PayPal stock has since plunged to $53.20 as investors become more cautious again about the pace of a turnaround. The stock is down 81% over the past five years.

While much of the clothing and footwear industry has spent this earnings season explaining away low consumer demand, Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) showed an entirely different story, and investors rewarded it accordingly.
Shares of the German footwear manufacturer rose up to 20% on August 13 after the company published fiscal third-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations and prompted management to improve its full-year guidance. Revenue for the quarter came in at €720 million (about $829 million), up 13% on a reported basis and 15% in constant currency, exceeding ****** ysts expectations of around €713-715 million. Meanwhile, adjusted earnings per share of €0.74 happened to be somewhat lower than the €0.76 consensus, though this fact did little to dampen enthusiasm given the report's overall strength.
The headline change was direction. Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) now targets fiscal 2026 revenue growth of 15% on a constant-currency basis, up from its previous range of 13% to 15%, putting the company at the upper end of its own previous objective rather than just reiterating it. Management also increased its adjusted EBITDA forecast to at least €710 million, up from a previous floor of €700 million, and now expects reported revenue to be at the high end of the €2.30 billion-€2.35 billion range.
According to Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK), the reason for some of the strength is simple: full-price demand from affluent buyers who haven't reduced their discretionary spending in the same manner that the broader consumer has. Strong pricing power and brand loyalty helped shield companies catering to wealthier customers from the broader spending pullback affecting much of the apparel and footwear sector, and Birkenstock's results reflect this across all regions it operates in, with the Americas growing 14%, EMEA 15%, and Asia-Pacific rising the fastest at 23%, all in constant currency terms.
Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) has also carefully managed its balance sheet during this period of strength. On June 30, the company executed an accelerated share buyback program of €230 million, decreasing its outstanding share count by about 6 million shares. The move helped enhance per-share earnings growth, with adjusted EPS rising 19% year-over-year.

Florida soccer has been on a skid as of late, losing two straight games as conference play begins. The Gators have played two back-to-back nationally ranked teams and have fallen to both of them.

Florida had many opportunities against the top-five opponent but failed to execute. The Gators had the game tied 1-1 following a goal from sophomore Tatum Borman in the 58th minute; however, the Demon Deacons answered in the 80th minute with a penalty kick that allowed them to skate by in a 2-1 victory. It's been a long wait for this day to get here, but now we can finally turn the page to (I hope) more constructive play and move on from the UVA debacle. So what are we keeping our eyes on in the bigger picture tonight?
1.) Find at least the beginnings of an identity offensively. NC State's performance at Virginia was so bad as to look incoherent, and the offense wasn't on the field enough to develop a rhythm, much less discover its most important foundational aspects. Pretty much nothing worked, and what did—or could have—worked, often wasn't well-executed. The Pack has to take the opportunity presented by Richmond to start sorting itself out and establish concepts that work. Where's the bread and ***** er?
2.) To that end, who are the playmakers in this offense? We know that NC State would like to lean on Duke Scott and certainly he has better days ahead of him, but I'd like to see a more concerted effort to get Victor Snow the ball tonight. We learned next to nothing about the passing game in Week 0—well, nothing good, anyway—and still don't really know what we've got at receiver. It might end up essential for Snow to get 8-10 touches each week, and now's a good time to figure that out. I won't be surprised if Keenan Jackson is a focal point, either.
3.) What does this defense look like when it isn't in a bad position for 60 minutes? They were set up to fail by the offense in the first game, and Virginia never had to get out of its conservative comfort zone. Still the defense did some good things against actual handoffs, and needs to build on that. Richmond shouldn't have much of a downfield passing game to speak of, and I want to see how the defense performs against more regular passing downs.

CBRE Investment Management purchased Cerberus Capital Management's Tenet Equity business for $1.6B, both sides of the transaction announced in separate news releases Tuesday. CBRE said it made the investment on behalf of several of its investment strategies but didn't disclose which ones.
Net leases are real estate arrangements in which tenants are responsible for fees typically ******* ociated with ownership, like insurance, maintenance and taxes. This is often executed through leaseback deals, in which a business sells its property for a cash infusion and then leases it back to remain a tenant.
Along with the acquisition, CBRE is launching a new strategy to further invest in net lease properties. Akash Shivashankara, a CBRE IM senior portfolio manager, will be heading that strategy.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The effort and energy Tim Polasek has poured into North Dakota State's football program on the climb to the FBS can be easily sourced back to his rural roots.
As a small-college quarterback on summer and winter breaks, and later to supplement a meager income as he launched a career in coaching, Polasek worked grueling jobs as a logger in the woods of central Wisconsin and on the overnight shift at a steel mill near his tiny hometown of Iola.
Appreciation for the unglamourous work as a small-college ***** istant sure comes quick with that background.
"I learned a lot there: That could be you if you don't graduate college and pursue something," said Polasek, who is 28-3 with the Bison since becoming head coach in 2024. "Seeing those tough jobs and other people having to execute that every day really always makes it an honor and a privilege to be the leader of this program."
Having handily beaten Jacksonville State and Fordham in their first two games, the Bison will face one of their biggest tests as a first-year FBS team on Saturday night: Their Mountain West Conference opener at Air Force.

The dress is so good that the shoes frustrate me even more. The bronze pointed-toe pumps with criss-cross ankle straps feel disconnected from the modernity of the silhouette. A pewter strappy sandal or mule would have been a much stronger finish and allowed the dress to have the final word.

Pilot has promoted Jamie Landis to executive vice president and chief administrative officer, a spokesperson for the travel center chain confirmed to C-Store Dive.
Landis, who was named senior vice president of business planning and execution in 2024, will continue leading that function while **** uming leadership of Pilot's safety, enterprise risk, procurement and communications functions. She will also spearhead the company's people team.
Landis succeeds Julius **** , who announced his resignation via social media last week. **** said in a LinkedIn post that he will remain at Pilot through the end of the year as an executive advisor to the CEO. Pilot's website reflects both leadership changes.
Landis' updated company bio says she is responsible for developing, refining and helping execute Pilot's long-term strategy, and for advancing the company's business ambition and supporting more than 30,000 team members across North America.

CNBC and Reuters reported that The Gap, Inc. (NYSE:GAP) named retail veteran Michael Francis as president and CEO of Old Navy, effective November 2, succeeding Haio Barbeito, who will move into an advisory role.
The announcement came alongside second-quarter results showing Old Navy net sales fell 4% year over year to $2.1 billion, with comparable sales down 4% versus ******* ysts' expected 2.4% decline, marking the brand's first negative comp in 12 quarters. Old Navy contributes nearly 60% of Gap's total revenue. CEO Richard ******* son attributed the miss partly to summer marketing that "lacked a direct product message" but said the brand has already seen "significant improvement" in traffic and sales over the past month. Gap's namesake brand posted 10% comparable sales growth in the same quarter, and Gap shares jumped as much as 14% after the report.

Overall profitability far exceeded what the sales headline suggests since operating income more than doubled to $676 million from $292 million a year earlier, while net income more than doubled to $501 million from $216 million. These results show that Gap can significantly improve earnings even while Old Navy struggles.
The turnaround playbook is clearly working where it has been fully applied. The Gap, Inc. (NYSE:GAP)'s namesake brand delivered double-digit comparable sales growth this quarter. It shows that CEO ******* son's broader strategy can succeed decisively when executed well, which strengthens confidence that it can eventually be applied successfully to fix Old Navy too.

Reuters reported that H.B. Fuller Company (NYSE:FUL) said its board unanimously rejected activist investor Ancora Holdings Group's unsolicited proposal to acquire its Building Adhesives Solutions (BAS) business for between $1.1 billion and $1.2 billion.
The board said the offer "significantly undervalues" BAS, is "substantially below precedent transactions," and ignores the unit's growth prospects, according to the company's statement. H.B. Fuller noted BAS delivered 6% organic growth year over year in the second quarter and said a carve-out would create "significant dis-synergies" since BAS shares manufacturing operations with the company's other businesses across more than 30 plants worldwide. The board also said Ancora's proposal "lacks key details needed to demonstrate" its ability to execute the deal. Ancora's activist campaign against H.B. Fuller began in May, initially opposing the company's acquisition of UK-based Advanced Medical Solutions Group.
H.B. Fuller Company (NYSE:FUL)'s valuation argument has support from BAS's recent performance and growth prospects. BAS delivered 6% organic sales growth and 10% EBITDA growth in the second quarter, while H.B. Fuller expects the business to become a significant earnings driver as construction markets recover and data-center demand grows. Those results give management a credible basis for arguing that Ancora's $1.2 billion offer undervalues the business.
H.B. Fuller also has a legitimate operational argument against separating BAS. The company shares manufacturing operations across more than 30 plants worldwide, and management expects a carve-out to create significant dis-synergies. Keeping BAS within H.B. Fuller could therefore preserve operating efficiencies that a standalone business might lose.
Management also has a clear strategic priority that competes with Ancora's proposal for its attention and capital. H.B. Fuller continues to implement its Advanced Medical Solutions Group acquisition while developing BAS as an important future earnings driver. The company can therefore focus on executing its existing strategy instead of diverting resources toward a major BAS separation.

On August 3, Alexandria Real Estate Equities (NYSE:ARE) reported a Q2 2026 net loss of $0.43 per diluted share, narrower than the $0.64 loss posted a year earlier, while first-half net income swung to $1.68 per share from a loss of $0.71 in H1 2025. Funds from operations, the metric real estate investors watch most closely, moved the other way. Second-quarter FFO per share, as adjusted, fell to $1.73 from $2.33, and first-half FFO per share dropped to $3.46 from $4.63.
Leasing activity picked up meaningfully in the second quarter. Alexandria signed 1,038,917 rentable square feet of leases in Q2 2026, a 60% jump from the first quarter and roughly 87,000 square feet above its trailing quarterly average. Three-quarters of that leasing activity over the trailing twelve months came from existing tenants, and once executed leases with future occupancy are counted, total occupancy climbs to 90.9% from the reported 86.9%. Tenant quality remains a selling point too: 80% of annual rental revenue comes from the company's Megacampus platform, and 57% comes from investment-grade or publicly traded large-cap tenants, with 99.9% of second-quarter rents and receivables collected as of August 3.
The balance sheet backs that stability up. Alexandria holds $3.60 billion in liquidity and just extended its $5.0 billion unsecured line of credit to 2032 at a lower borrowing rate of SOFR plus 0.725%, down from SOFR plus 0.835%. Only 6% of total debt matures through 2028, and the company's 9.7-year weighted-average remaining debt term is the longest among S&P 500 REITs. General and administrative expenses fell 17.4% from Q2 2024, even after a year-over-year uptick, and the company maintained its $0.72 per share quarterly dividend, a 5.4% yield as of June 30.
The numbers behind the improved per-share figures are less reassuring on closer look. Same-property net operating income fell 10.6% in the second quarter and 11.5% for the first half, driven largely by occupancy declines tied to lease expirations. Operating occupancy slipped from 87.7% at the end of March to 86.9% at the end of June, and the current-period average occupancy of 87.1% compares with 92.6% a year earlier. Lease renewals aren't helping much either: rental rate changes on renewed and re-leased ******* e fell 0.7% in the second quarter and 15.0% in the first quarter, with cash-basis declines of 4.3% and 15.8%, respectively.
Leverage remains elevated in the near term. Net debt and preferred stock to Adjusted EBITDA stood at 7.0x on a Q2 2026 annualized basis, well above the company's 5.6x to 6.2x target for the fourth quarter, which depends on completing $2.9 billion in planned dispositions and other capital sources. General and administrative expenses rose 26.5% from Q2 2025 to $36.9 million. The company also recorded $222.5 million of real estate impairment charges in the quarter and continues to evaluate the business and financial strategy for five development and redevelopment projects totaling 1.4 m
