The Tigers' woes continue as they dropped their Friday game to the Royals 5-2.
After a, shall we say, unpleasant series against the Pirates, the Tigers had a day to rest and reflect before heading to Kansas City to take on the Royals. Hopefully a break in the city of Hallmark and BBQ would be just what the doctor ordered to get the Tigers back in a winning mindset. To open the weekend series, they had Troy Melton on the mound, and he was up against Noah Cameron for the Royals.
Kevin McGonigle got a two-out single in the first, but the Tigers weren't able to convert the early baserunner. In the home half, Bobby Witt Jr. singled with one out, but Melton turned around to induce two outs in the next two at-bats to keep the Royals off the board.
In the second, Spencer Torkelson got a one-out walk. He was then eliminated in a force out off the bat of Ben Malgeri, and a lineout ended the inning. It was another one-out walk in the bottom of the inning, this time for Nick Loftin. With two outs, Isaac Collins singled. But even with two baserunners on, the Royals couldn't convert a run.
The Tigers continued getting runners on, as Hao-Yu Lee got a two-out single, but as with the previous innings, they couldn't manage to get him home. Melton managed to keep the Royals off the bases entirely with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning.

It's shaping up to be an expensive week for Prince Harry.
Just as the duke, ****** ss Meghan and their children prepare to move from California back to Britain, a judge has ordered Harry, Elton John and a handful of other claimants to pay almost $ 13 million to ****** ociated Newspapers Limited, publisher of the Daily Mail, MailOnline and the Mail on Sunday.
An initial payment of $13 million (£9,544,355) toward ANL's legal costs must be made by 4 p.m. on Aug. 28, the judge ruled on Friday. This is just the first round of legal costs. The final figure will be determined at a later hearing.
The judge has not enforced a cap on the total costs Harry and the other claimants may face.
The group of seven lost their lawsuit against the publisher last month after alleging that the publications unlawfully gathered information for their reporting. Supposed privacy breaches include voicemail interception, phone hacking and obtaining personal information through deception.

A UK court ordered Prince Harry and six others Friday to pay an initial £9.5 million ($13 million) after they lost their privacy case against the publisher of British tabloid the Daily Mail.
The court said the prince and six other high-profile figures, who lost their unlawful information gathering and privacy invasions claim against ***** ociated Newspapers Limited (ANL), must make the payment within a week.
The claimants -- which include Elton John, his husband David Furnish, actors Elizabeth Hurley and Sadie Frost -- accused the Mail of bugging their cars and homes, listening into calls and accessing bank accounts and medical records. ANL had denied all the allegations.
After an emotional 11-week trial, judge Matthew Nicklin sided with the publisher in a ruling handed down on July 7, concluding the "claimants failed to prove their pleaded allegations".
After a further two-day hearing over costs, he made Friday's initial costs decision.

Prince Harry and a group of six other high-profile figures have been ordered to make an initial payment of £9.54m in legal costs to the Daily Mail's publisher after they lost their High Court privacy case.
The seven claimants, also including Sir Elton John and Liz Hurley, must pay the initial figure by 28 August - and could potentially pay up to £25m more after that in a victory for **** ociated Newspapers Limited (ANL).
The group had sued ANL over allegations of unlawful information-gathering, which the publisher had strenuously denied.
On 7 July, Judge Mr Justice Nicklin dismissed the claims and said the public figures had failed to prove the allegations.
The judge ruled that he was making an exceptional order to force the Duke of Sussex and others to pay up to £34.5m in costs incurred by the newspaper group because of the way the case had been brought - including unsupportable claims that top executives from the group had lied to the Leveson public inquiry.

Dane Cook has shed light on his brother's theft of $12 million (£8.8 million) from him in a new documentary.
Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story details the comedian's meteoric rise "and his crash at the hands of the person he trusted most", according to a synopsis of the film reported by People magazine.
The documentary goes behind the scenes of Cook's career and explores the key role played by his half-brother Darryl McCauley, who ultimately stole millions from him.
In 2010, McCauley was ordered to pay the comedian $12 million (£8.8 million) back after he and his wife pled guilty to embezzling the money.
He was sentenced to six years in prison on charges including larceny, forgery and embezzlement. Erika McCauley was sentenced to two to three years in prison on charges including two counts of larceny.
After serving his sentence and being released from prison, McCauley disappeared.

My son recently sent me this tweet from someone named Trey Rowland: "ordered the number 5 at Jimmy John's and now I have a voicemail from Jayden Daniels' lawyer." I responded that I didn't get the joke. He then told me that Daniels's lawyer, Adam Kenner, had sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU, demanding that the school not ******* ign the number 5 (the number Daniels wore while winning the Heisman in his final season at LSU) to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett. I was intrigued, and decided to investigate.
With all due respect to Kenner, this is a legal fumble of epic proportions (I abide by the longstanding rule that requires me to use puns whenever I write about sports).
I got a copy of the letter, and it has more holes than the Bengals' offensive line (see above). Interestingly, the letter does not actually mention the number. It purports to address LSU's use of Daniels' "name, image and likeness," or "NIL." It may be that LSU is using Daniels' name or image in some fashion, but all the reporting I've seen indicates it is a direct response to the ******* ignment of Daniels' old number.
More: USA TODAY Network 2025 Ohio Super 25 football preseason poll
Even though a lawyer wrote the letter, it gets to the point quickly. It states in the second paragraph "[w]e have been informed that LSU...continues to use Mr. Daniels' NIL notwithstanding the expiration of the contractual period during which LSU was authorized to do so." So we can presume that Daniels' theory is that the number 5 is part of Daniels' NIL.

MOSCOW, Aug 19 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian government on Wednesday to launch a programme to rebuild commercial warehouses damaged or destroyed by Ukraine in a month of targeted attacks.
Ukraine has carried out drone strikes against at least two dozen warehouses of Russia's top online retailer Wildberries since July 18, causing explosions and fires that have destroyed a large chunk of its storage capacity.
Putin, without naming the company, said a number of logistic sites needed rebuilding with state involvement, and told the government to work on this.
"It is essential to ensure that the restoration of damaged facilities is carried out at a qualitatively new technological level," he said in televised comments to a conference of ministers and business leaders on the economy.
Putin said the economy was growing modestly despite external pressure — a reference to Western sanctions — and despite Ukrainian attacks on industrial and infrastructure facilities.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Apple said on Tuesday it will charge a 5% commission on digital transactions in apps distributed outside its App Store, replacing a more complex system as it seeks to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act.
The company last year changed App Store rules and fees in the EU after the bloc's antitrust regulators ordered it to remove commercial barriers that they said hindered developers from directing customers outside the store.
The regulators criticised Apple's conditions, including a new Core Technology Fee, saying they discouraged developers from using alternative app distribution channels on its iOS mobile operating system.
Apple said on Tuesday that App Store apps using alternative payment processing will face a 20% commission, although fees could fall to 10% under its small business programme.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered authorities to take imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to a private hospital in the capital for a medical examination, following months of concerns from his family and personal physicians about his health and access to medical care, his lawyers and party officials said.
A three-judge panel ordered that Khan be taken to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad in the coming days and examined by a medical board that will include specialists and one of his personal physicians, Faisal Sultan.
The court also ordered prison officials to allow Khan weekly meetings with family members and telephone calls with his sons. Khan's family has been struggling to secure access to him and have him examined by physicians of his choice.
Hours after the order, authorities allowed one of Khan's sisters to visit him. Pakistan had barred visitors earlier this year after receiving intelligence reports about a possible attack on the prison where he is being held.
The order came months after Khan petitioned the court, asking to be transferred from a high-security prison in the nearby garrison city of Rawalpindi to a hospital and to be allowed access to his personal physicians, family and lawyers.

In August 2024, a woman wrote to Rebel Creamery to complain about her husband.
She had sent him to the store for Van Leeuwen ice cream and he came home with Rebel. "Your product was placed right next to Van Leeuwen and looked the same," she wrote. "I nearly did the same thing when I shopped! Later, my friend shared the same experience on the other side of the country!"
Two years later, that message turned up in a federal courtroom in Brooklyn, in a ruling that ordered Rebel to hand over $23.785 million and redesign its pints. On Friday, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Utah.

Rihanna has taken her children around the world, from luxury destinations to some of entertainment's biggest events. However, one of her most meaningful family trips happened on the streets where her own story began.
The superstar recently returned to Barbados with her three children, RZA Athelston Mayers, Riot Rose Mayers and Rocki Irish Mayers, giving them a glimpse of the island that shaped her long before she became one of the most famous women on the planet.
During the family getaway, Rihanna was seen taking her children on a bus tour around Barbados, embracing a slower, more local experience rather than a typical celebrity vacation. The family also stopped at a local coconut vendor, where Rihanna ordered fresh coconuts for her children while enjoying a simple island moment.
For fans, the scene was striking because it showed a side of Rihanna rarely seen publicly: not the global superstar performing for thousands, but a mother sharing her childhood with her children.
The most emotional part of the trip came when Rihanna returned to where it all began: Westbury New Road in Bridgetown.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon on Sunday to scale back planned joint military exercises with South Korea after the Republican president said it declined to help denuclearize Iran.
Trump said in a social media post that the exercises slated to begin this week are costly and "send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile" to North Korea, which he said "has been unthreatening and respectful" while Trump has been in the White House.
"Therefore, and based on the fact that it is too late to cancel, I have instructed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to substantially reduce the Joint Military Exercises!" Trump wrote. Trump added that he recently asked South Korea's president to join the U.S. in its efforts to denuclearize Iran, "and they said, 'No thanks!'"
The 11 days of exercises involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers were designed to beef up readiness against North Korean threats.
North Korea on Friday threatened unspecified stern steps against the U.S. and South Korea, describing their military drills as a "a rehearsal for an aggressive war" that are triggering greater instability in the region.

Former Prince Andrew has had scandal after scandal, and it was only recently that he was stripped of his ******* le and ordered to vacate his home at Royal Lodge. So, what changed? His close ties to Jeffrey Epstein were widely known for years, and the British royal family never took a firm stance with him. If anything, they're guilty of letting him get away with too much for too long.
According to RadarOnline, what changed was Kate Middleton. The outlet pointed to her and Queen Camilla as the key figures in Andrew's "downfall" and his ban from Sandringham. The disgraced ex-prince is currently under investigation for suspicion of misconduct in public office and ******* crimes.

Aug 14 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday ordered a lower court to reconsider whether China-based DJI, the world's largest drone maker, should be removed from a Pentagon list of companies allegedly supporting Beijing's military.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the lower court erred by relying only on the unclassified record in concluding that the company contributes to the Chinese defense industrial base.
DJI is one of a growing number of Chinese companies challenging their placement on the Pentagon's list of Chinese military companies. The list bars the Defense Department from contracting with designated companies, and a broader ban on buying their products via third parties takes effect in 2027.
"There is...no publicly stated rationale for why the Secretary believes DJI contributes to the Chinese defense industrial base," the appeals court said. "On remand, the district court may examine the classified record and determine whether to uphold the Secretary's determination .

Amy Winehouse's father has been hit with a nearly £1 million bill after losing a bitter court battle against two of his late daughter's closest friends. Mitch Winehouse was ordered to make interim payments totaling £963,851—about $1.3 million—to Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay after a High Court judge tore into the case he brought over the sale of the singer's belongings.
According to the BBC, the dispute centered on 141 items auctioned in the United States between 2021 and 2023, including Winehouse's clothes, handbags, earrings, makeup, ballet slippers and a dress she wore on her final tour in 2011. Mitch claimed Parry, Amy's former stylist, and Gourlay had no right to sell the items and accused them of "deliberately" hiding the sales from him. The women denied wrongdoing, saying the items either belonged to them or had been given to them by Winehouse.
COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess.
The court wasn't buying Mitch's version. Judge Sarah Clarke KC tossed his case earlier this year, finding that he "knew all along" that the women planned to sell the memorabilia.
The trial had heard allegations that Parry and Gourlay took advantage of Mitch's forgetfulness and pocketed more than $1.4 million from the auctions, but Clarke rejected the claim that they had deliberately concealed the sales.

MILAN (AP) — Italian authorities recovered three artworks by Renoir, Cézanne and Matisse worth millions of euros that were stolen earlier this year from a private museum near the northern city of Parma, police said Friday. Five people were detained.
A statement from the Italian Carabinieri's art recovery squad said the artworks were discovered in the possession of one of the suspects during searches ordered by prosecutors in the Parma province and neighboring provinces. The five suspects detained are believed to belong to an organized crime group responsible for numerous thefts of homes, businesses and other properties. Police also recovered stolen goods worth tens of thousands of euros.
Meanwhile, Brazilian police said late Thursday they located eight stolen works by Matisse following an apartment raid outside Sao Paulo. There were no apparent links between the two thefts.
The three artworks recovered in Italy are "Fish," a painting by Auguste Renoir, "Still Life with Cherries," a pencil and watercolor by Paul Cézanne, and "Odalisque on the Terrace," a color aqatint by Henri Matisse. Authorities said the Cézanne was valued at 6 million euros ($7 million), the Renoir at 3 million euros ($3.5 million), and the Matisse at 20,000 euros ($23,000).
The heist at the Magnani Rocca Foundation, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Parma, took place on the night of March 22-23, police said. Video distributed by authorities showed the thieves entering through a broken door window and then taking the three artworks down from adjacent walls before exiting and escaping through the gardens in a matter of minutes.

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Prediction market operator Kalshi accused Nevada's gaming regulator of violating federal law in a statement on Saturday after it sought daily penalties of $120,000 a day over the firm's alleged failure to comply with a geofencing order.
• Board investigators successfully placed nine trades on Kalshi's mobile application while connected to cellular networks in Nevada, a day after a court-ordered deadline for the company to have a complete geofencing solution in place, according to a court filing seen by Reuters.
• Kalshi in a statement said it hired GeoComply, a vendor licensed by Nevada's gaming regulator at the state's request, and that it kept the state updated throughout.
• Nevada investigators misrepresented their residences to Kalshi, violating federal law, and at least one circumvented the company's own blocking measures, Kalshi's lawyers said.
• A judge in the western U.S. state of Nevada in April issued a preliminary injunction barring Kalshi from offering such contracts in the state without obtaining a gaming license.

CF Industries (NYSE:CF) just posted a first half of 2026 that most fertilizer companies would frame around one thing: the conflict with Iran. Instead, management spent the earnings call on August 6 arguing that something bigger is happening underneath the headlines. Adjusted EBITDA hit $2.2 billion for the first half, ammonia plants ran at nearly 98% of available capacity, and the company raised its own estimate of what it can earn in a normal year. Investors chasing the geopolitical story may be missing the real one.
Management's central argument is that global nitrogen capacity has gotten permanently more expensive to build, which raises the price required to justify new plants and therefore lifts what CF Industries can earn even in ordinary years. That case leans on Blue Point, where the company has now received every permit needed to start construction, ordered nearly all its long lead items, and expects module fabrication to begin later this year. Combined with the planned return of the Yazoo City Complex in the first half of 2027, those projects support management's target of roughly $3.3 billion in mid-cycle EBITDA by 2030, up from a new $2.9 billion baseline, and neither figure includes any ****** p from the current conflict.
The quarter's numbers back up the operational side of that story. Second quarter net earnings reached $727 million, or $4.73 per diluted share, while trailing 12-month free cash flow came in around $1.8 billion. CF Industries has funneled much of that into buybacks, repurchasing 10.6 million shares for $958 million over the past year, and the board raised the quarterly dividend 20% to $0.60 per share in July. Shares outstanding have fallen 29% since the start of 2021 while the dividend has doubled, a combination management says has lifted investor ownership of the underlying business by more than 40% since 2020.
Management spent real time on the call pushing back on the idea that CF Industries' growth is mostly a geopolitical trade, which suggests that's exactly how a lot of investors are currently pricing the stock. Demand data from the quarter gives that read some support. Customers in regions with second-half application seasons deferred purchases as prices rose, and North American buyers slowed down enough in June that channel inventories fell to a very low point.
That weakness only reversed once thin inventories forced a rush into July's UAN and ammonia fill programs. Meanwhile, capital spending is about to climb as Blue Point construction ramps up, with CF Industries' share of 2026 capex projected at $950 million out of a company total of $1.3 billion, a bill that has to be paid before any of the 2030 targets show up in earnings.

Olympique de Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has revealed that the club's hierarchy ordered him to strip Pierre-Emile Højbjerg of the captaincy following the midfielder's refusal to join Newcastle United.
Højbjerg started Friday night's 2-1 friendly defeat against Atlético de Madrid at the Stade Vélodrome, but it was Timothy Weah who wore the captain's armband for the encounter.
Speaking after the match, Genesio made clear that the decision had not been his own and openly admitted that he disagreed with the move.
"It's a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management. If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it's not a decision that I agree with. But I'm an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it," Genesio told reporters following the game.
The change comes amid tensions between Højbjerg and Marseille's hierarchy over his future at the club. As reported by RMC Sport, OM were angered by the Denmark international's decision to reject a move to Newcastle United earlier this week.
