SEATTLE (AP) — It's only fitting that the last Detroit Tigers starter to match Troy Melton's most recent feat is no longer on the team.
Melton's latest strong outing, which came in an 8-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, made it back-to-back starts of seven innings with three or fewer hits allowed. The previous Tigers starter to do that before Melton was Tarik Skubal, who is now employed by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Melton doesn't have the resume as Skubal, the two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. But since coming off the injured list in late May, Melton has been even better than his former teammate, and again looked like one of baseball's best pitchers Tuesday.
Even after Detroit dealt away Skubal and former No. 1 overall draft pick Casey Mize, Melton said he hasn't felt any added pressure to step up in the starting rotation.
"I'm just trying to get people out," Melton said. "Yeah, obviously (we) lost two pretty good players. So, got to find a way to replace them however we can."

He missed the first 22 games of the season recovering from a left knee that sidelined him for all but six games in his first season with Golden State in 2024-25.

Sacramento, Calif. — The player to be named later in the Jahmai Jones trade has been named.
The Tigers completed the trade which sent Jones to the Boston Red Sox on July 14 by acquiring 24-year-old left-hander Jojo Ingrassia on Saturday.
Ingrassia, who was being groomed as a starting pitcher, was 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA and averaging 12 strikeouts per nine innings at High-A Greenville.
He is expected to report to West Michigan.
Ingrassia, a 14th-round pick of the Red Sox in 2023, was teammates with Tigers right-hander Troy Melton for two seasons at San Diego State. Ingrassia transferred to Cal State Fullerton in 2022 where he ended up closing games, posting a 5-2 record with a 2.42 ERA and seven saves.

Residents have said they are frustrated that large numbers of lorries continue to use a road into Melton rather than the town's new £131m bypass.
Pork Pie Way opened in May providing a new 4.4-mile (7.1km) route around the north and east of the town.
However, residents in Burton Road have said they are still seeing HGVs "thundering past" their homes at all hours despite the availability of an alternative route.
Leicestershire County Council, the highways authority, said it would look at steps to encourage lorry drivers to use the bypass.
"We thought things would get better when Pork Pie Way opened," said Burton Road resident David Curran.

After a horrible start to the 2026 season, the Detroit Tigers have rebounded nicely, posting the best record in the American League since June 1, leaving themselves in position to challenge for a playoff spot and a division ***** le in the second half of the season.
At the end of May, Detroit had plunged to a 22-38 record through 50 games, 16 games under .500 and 11.5 games behind in the AL Central division. The roster, and the pitching rotation in particular, was devastated by injuries, with Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Troy Melton, and Justin Verlander all spending time on the injured list. Reese Olson will miss the entire season, while Jack Flaherty and Kenley Jansen struggled early and joined the wounded in June, and Jackson Jobe remains on the 60-day IL.
Despite all that, the Tigers now have a healthy rotation, with Verlander and Jobe hopeful for the second half, and their rotation has the fourth-best ERA in baseball, 3.48, at the All-Star break. Tigers starters also have the fourth best BB/ 9 ratio and the lowest home run ratio in the show at just 0.99 homers per nine innings pitched. They have surrendered the third-lowest batting average and the fifth-lowest Walks plus Hits per inning (WHIP) in the majors. Keeping the ball in the yard and runners off the bases is a recipe for success in any league.

Perhaps they should rename Comerica Park to Rogers Center after Jake Rogers' pinch performance helped the Tigers beat the A's 6-1.
The Tigers have been pretty good lately, 7-3 for their last 10 games, and as we know, performing well against teams with much better records than theirs. So naturally, against another fourth-place team, they're going to potentially struggle. However, they did take the first game of the series against the A's, so how this series will play out is anyone's guess. The Tigers had Troy Melton on the mound up against Jeffrey Springs for the A's.
The A's went 1-2-3 in the top of the first. The home half took considerably longer to work through. With one out, Dillon Dingler singled and was able to advance to second on a throwing error by the A's third baseman. Kevin McGonigle walked, then Spencer Torkelson walked. Springs was having a heck of a time finding the zone, and that didn't change when Riley Greene came up to bat, and both Greene and the catcher challenged pitches, both of them ****** , before Greene singled to score Dingler and put the Tigers on the board first. Golden State Warriors backup point guard De'Anthony Melton has officially declined his $3.45 million player option to become a free agent, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac.
This doesn't come as much of a surprise, as the former USC guard was expected to test the market. Last season with the Warriors, Melton averaged a career-high 12.3 points to go along with 3.2 rebounds, 2.6 ****** ists, 1.6 steals and 0.4 blocks. Due to financial constraints after re-signing Kristaps Porzingis, the Warriors could be priced out of retaining Melton despite interest in having him back. However, Golden State will have more clarity on how to allocate the rest of their cap ****** e after free agent forward LeBron James decides on his newest team.

DETROIT (AP) — Tatsuya Imai struck out 10 in six scoreless innings and Taylor Trammell homered to lead the Houston Astros to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.
Imai (5-3) allowed two hits and a walk and threw 63 of his 96 pitches for strikes in the opener of the four-game series. AJ Blubaugh struck out three in two innings, and Enyel De Los Santos gave upDillon Dingler's 19th home run in the ninth on the way to his fifth save.
Detroit starter Troy Melton took a perfect game into the sixth inning before Trammell hit a one-out, 0-1 pitch 422 feet to right field for his second home run and a 1-0 lead.

The Golden State Warriors are expected to be active during the offseason, with some even suggesting we could see a somewhat different roster beyond Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
As long as the Warriors keep those guys together and add the right supporting pieces, I like what they could build. However, doing so might require making a trade or two, and according to one CBS Sports insider, it might even require moving on from Moses Moody, a young player often viewed as a fan favorite.
“Another injury case. He tore his patellar tendon during the season, but he’s also one of the few mid-sized contracts Golden State has to trade with,” Quinn wrote.

After a pair of disappointing losses and a rainout at home against the Guardians, the Tigers hit the road for the Lone Star State, the Bluebonnet State, the Home of the Whopper (I ****** ume) for the opener of a three-game series against the Astros in Houston. It didn’t exactly go as the Tigers initially envisioned it, I imagine, but in the end Detroit came away with a comfortable 9-3 victory on Monday night — and, holy mackerel, did Colt Keith have a night.
Troy Melton woke up with lower-back tightness, so Drew Anderson got the spot start. (Get well soon, Troy. Please.) Anderson has generally been solid whenever in the game he’s been asked to pitch; he made a similar start back on May 20 against Cleveland and he pitched into the fifth, giving up no runs, two hits, and striking out seven. He’s been decent recently, too: in June coming into today, Anderson had pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs across five relief appearances.
Facing the Tigers was Kai-Wei Teng, a right-hander from Taiwan in his first season in Houston. He’s had some mixed results so far in his career in North America, spending time with the Giants the last two seasons. Like almost all of his colleagues on the Houston pitching staff, he’s been walking a ton of batters — about 4.2 per 9 innings — so it was important that the Tigers needed to be patient against Teng to get runners on base.
The Tigers loaded the bases with two out in the first after a pair of walks and a hit-batsman. Keith then got clipped by a very, very wild pitch that nicked his back-foot calf pant-leg to force in a run, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
