Democratic state parties announced Monday that they are launching an operation for the midterm elections they're calling the "New Battlefield Project," intended to recruit 10,000 volunteers to guard polling places in case armed federal officers show up.
Activists are planning mass protests if the Trump administration tries to interfere with voting or ballot counting. And legal scholars are distributing white papers advising judges what they should do if the government tries to seize ballots.
The unprecedented efforts are in response to President Donald Trump's equally unprecedented moves to interfere in this year's midterm elections, which include attempts to impose proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote and directing the Postal Service to play a central role in deciding which voters should get a mail ballot.
The anxious contingency planning as voting gets underway has become a marker for how fraught democracy has become in the country that once stood as an example to the world.
"We have never prepared for an election sabotage event like we have now," said Ezra Levin of the left-leaning group Indivisible.

The dispute dates back to December 2024, when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) sued a group of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its top-selling HIV drug Biktarvy. The lawsuit arose from a specific instance in which a patient in Maryland received the medicine in the mail from Turkey, with label instructions written in Turkish.
A federal district court in Baltimore ruled in Gilead's favor and ordered a preliminary injunction, determining that the company was likely to succeed on its Lanham Act trademark violation and unfair competition arguments. As the case continued, the injunction was increased to include new sellers like CanaRx, ElectRx, and ScriptSourcing. The defendants filed an appeal with the Fourth Circuit, and the district judge declined to suspend the injunction while the appeal was pending, thus the import restriction has been in effect the entire time. ATLANTA − Georgia Tech cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe was taken off the field on a stretcher in the third quarter of game against Tennessee football at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Sept. 12.
Play stopped at the 14:17 mark of the third quarter and UT driving with a 24-10 lead. Mbakwe hit his head on the knee of Georgia Tech defensive end Jordan Walker, who also exited with a lower body injury, during a play.
Trainers tended to Mbakwe on the field for a few minutes before calling for a stretcher to take him off the field. Mbakwe was able to move both his hands as he left the field. He signaled to the crowd and gripped a trainer's hand .
Mbakwe was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, two miles away from Bobby Dodd Stadium, according to the ESPN broadcast.

ATLANTA — Tennessee defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs left the Georgia Tech game with an injury in the first quarter on Sept. 12.
Hobbs was shaken up on a play with 11:14 remaining in the opening quarter. After lying on the turf for a couple of minutes, he walked slowly off the field on his own power and went directly to the injury tent.
It appeared to be a lower body injury. Hobbs was limited in preseason practice by a foot injury.
Hobbs is an important piece of UT's defensive line rotation. The senior has played in 33 games in his Vols career.
